Opis:
The purpose of this article is to redefine the category of “contamination”, entrenched in the tradition of literary reportage. Due to the process of genre blurring, the original meaning of the term (the one connected with the presence of creational elements in the reporter’s writings) has now been replaced by a more complex definition. The author creates the hypothesis that the “contamination” of contemporary reportage is caused also by the increase of subjective and emotional factors in journalistic narration. To illustrate this assumption, the article provides an analysis of the book Zapiski na biletach. Written by the Polish reporter Michał Olszewski the book serves as an example of genetic changes of the reportage convention.

The article presents the outcome of an analysis of archival volumes of the periodical „Rocznik Literacki” (1932-1984), publishing annually general overviews of Polish literature. The text aims at tracing back the perception of the reportage and the prevailing convinctions on its definition and borders. Essays written by prominent Polish critics and scholars show the evolution of the genre and its theory. A recurring issue is the problem of literary techniques possible (or, in some opinions, forbidden) in the reportage.

The intertextuality is one of a few terms gaining dominion over a whole contemporary culture. However, as long as literary reportage is considered the traditional mimetic relation takes the first and the last place alike. The main thesis of herein paper is that after the postmodern turn the naive referential analysis of creative non-fiction cannot be the most accurate way of interpreting anymore. Intertextuality appears to be able to refresh some reading methods and make them as adequate as possible in the postmodern reality. Moreover, it is not only about a kind of scholarly designed methodology, but also about a groundbreaking subgenre: an intertextual reportage which bases on the intentionally established relations between some texts. One of the most characteristic representatives of this genre variant is Mariusz Szczygieł whose pathway leads from an ordinary reportage form early 90’s to contemporary intertextual reportages about Czech Republic. Szczygieł is aware of fact that human perception is deeply influenced by some cultural schemes determined mostly by novels, newspapers, electronic media and art. That’s why the intertextual relations in his pieces seems to be even more important than the process of referring to the actual reality. The herein paper follows Szczygieł’s way from modern to postmodern configurations of the literary reportage, reconstructs his vision of the Bohemia with its art and literature and analyses one of his most specific works in terms of intertextuality.

This article is an analysis of the linguistic view of the identity of Mazurian people in East Prussia presented in the literary reportage On the Trail of the Sad Devil by Melchior Wańkowicz. The main focus is put on symptoms and mechanisms of an identity formation and a cultural interpenetration at the ethnic borderland viewable in language. The text considers narrator and narrative construction. It also presents the Mazurian attitude towards native language in the early 20th century and its historical grounds.

Opis:
Wojciech Jagielski has been presented in the article as a successor to Ryszard Kapuściński’s accomplishments in the genre of literary nonfiction. Both authors continue the tradition of nonfiction writing which started after the First World War in Poland and which displayed their fascination with human history. They both share the technique of using parallels and analogies, which for Jagielski serves the purpose of presenting culturally and historically remote spaces. Another key characteristic of Jagielski’s oeuvre, namely creating complex psychological portraits of the people in power, also tends to utilize the aforementioned technique. In consequence, Jagielski’s artistic development often leads him out onto the territory of yet another tradition of nonfiction writing, the one based on social observation.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the role of visuality in contemporary literary reportage. In my analysis I focus on the book Długi film o miłości. Powrót na Broad Peak by Jacek Hugo-Bader, published in 2014. I present that this text can be read as an example of reportage which affects several senses, but it gives priority to image. I analyze the photograph published in the book as well as their descriptions created by the journalist.

This paper deals with issues related to crossing the paradigm of novelty, uniqueness and originality – and thereby maintaining a kind of memory of literature – in the contemporary Polish literary reportage. Some Polish reporters try to consciously apply the poststructuralist metaphors of recycling, bricolage or assembly to reportage texts; in contemporary literary reportage also certain intertextual processes play an important role, based on deliberate creation of relations between literary texts. It all helps to keep the memory of literature. In this perspective we analyze selected reportage texts of Ryszard Kapuściński, Paweł Smoleński and Jacek Hugo-Bader.
Tematem tekstu jest problematyka przekraczania paradygmatu nowości, niepowtarzalności i oryginalności – a tym samym utrzymywanie swoistej pamięci literatury – we współczesnym polskim reportażu literackim. Niektórzy polscy reportażyści próbują świadomie zastosować poststrukturalistyczne metafory recyklingu, bricolage’u czy montażu w tekstach będących, na pierwszy rzut oka, gatunkowym zaprzeczeniem zarówno stosunkowo szeroko rozumianej intertekstualności, która leży u podstaw wspomnianych metafor, jak i pewnej, wynikającej z takiego podejścia do tekstu, „nieoryginalności”. W dzisiejszym reportażu ważną rolę odgrywają jednak także zabiegi intertekstualne polegające na świadomym tworzeniu relacji pomiędzy poszczególnymi tekstami literackimi (np. reportaże Pawła Smoleńskiego, Jacha Hugo-Badera, wcześniej Ryszarda Kapuścińskiego). To wszystko pomaga, przez odniesienia do starszych tekstów, utrzymywać pamięć literatury, ale także pamięć o ważnych dla opisywanego społeczeństwa wydarzeniach relacjonowanych przez reportażystów. Autorka podjęła próbę zbadania nie tylko relacji między światem i tekstem w wybranych reportażach literackich, ale także opisu relacji między jednym a drugim tekstem w szerszym kontekście (po)nowoczesnego podejścia do problematyki oryginalności oraz niepowtarzalności.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the relations between literary reportage and biography. In the era of “blurred genres” both forms strongly influence each other, which results nowadays in creation of very popular biographical reportages and journalistic biographies. In this context, it is worth discussing the book Koronkowa robota. Sprawa Gorgonowej by Cezary Łazarewicz, which combines the elements of reportage with biographical discourse.

This article explores Ziemowit Szczerek’s work of reportage, Mordor’s Coming to Eat Us: A Secret History of the Slavs. In his analysis, the author applies Marianne Hirsch’s conception of post-memory practices, Marielle Macé’s conception of literary style, and Michel de Certeau’s “spatial stories.” This text attempts to map the traveler and reporter’s transformations prompted by contact with actual geographical space.

The purpose of this article is to present the idea of multiculturalism outlined in the literary reportage Niemiec. Wszystkie ucieczki Zygfry- da by Włodzimierz Nowak published in 2016. The presented analyz es concentrate on the consequences of functioning between cultures. I would like to also concentrate on the role of mass media which are involved in process of constructing the cultural memory among the in habitants of the Polish-German borderland after 1945.

The reportages analyzed in the article are interpreted as texts that illustrate the ways in which knowledge about socialist countries in the era of increasing censorship is shaped. The main purpose of the article is to present how the authors of the reportages reproduce colonial discourse, replacing the ideological fiction of a colonizer with fiction, created for the sake of the totalitarian state.

Ukazano w nim w jaki sposób autorzy reportaży reprodukują dyskurs kolonialny, zastępując ideologiczną fikcję kolonizatora fikcją, stworzoną na użytek państwa totalitarnego.

Opis:
The year of the fall of the Berlin Wall is an important turning point in the history of the 20th century Europe. It symbolises the erosion of the communist system, which in Poland had began thirteen years earlier – with breaking the omnipotence of censorship by the independent self-publishing. When in 1989 the Opposition came to power, they changed both the economic and political system, which in turn changed the whole Polish culture – the book market, publishers’ position, function of the magazines, and even writers’ status. The readers’ first reaction was a sudden increase of interest in the emigrant, gulag, and underground literature, however, not even a decade passed, when that interest started fading. Then came the second wave: popular literature (romances, crime stories, thrillers, speculative fiction). Also, there were changes in the literary life: the dominant role of the capital city during the Polish People’s Republic had been undermined by local initiatives (including art zines, publishing houses in the provinces), “the headquarters’” position was nevertheless maintained by the state television and the authority of the Nike Literary Award, which had been created in 1996. Poetry was dominated by “the old poets” (Cz. Miłosz, T. Różewicz, Z. Herbert, W. Szymborska), who, despite nearing the ends of their lives, were in an exceptionally good literary shape. They were accompanied by the authors of The New Wave, with whom the poets of “BruLion” group soon waged war. In prose, the writers born around 1960, who are well-known today in Europe (e.g. O. Tokarczuk), gained a strong position. The world recognition was also won over by the masters of the Polish reportage (e.g. R. Kapuściński, H. Krall) and their pupils (W. Tochman, W. Jagielski, M. Szczygieł).

Nell’articolo si fondono diverse prospettive interpretative. La prima si concentra sul volume di poesie Usta Italji, pubblicato negli anni ‘30, nel quale Kazimiera Alberti, inconsapevolmente, preannuncia il suo futuro. Le “escursioni poetiche” tra le varie città italiane, rafforzate da elementi di stampo autobiografici, mostrano una soggettività letteraria tutta femminile. Il discorso biografico rappresenta una cornice per le esperienze affettive quali malinconia, tristezza e passione. Oggi chiameremmo tale esperienza legata ad un dato luogo come “poetica dello spazio”, nella quale gli elementi reali si collegano a quelli immaginari. La seconda parte dell’articolo è dedicata al soggiorno di Kazimiera Alberti in Italia. Soggiorno che certamente non può essere trattato come un semplice viaggio di piacere o a fini turistici. L’analisi del codice della memoria culturale dà vita ad una rappresentazione convincente dello sforzo con cui il poeta cerca un proprio modo di “vivere” in un mondo che si divide tra il tragico passato polacco e la sicurezza della terra italiana. Le riflessioni sulla lettera di Kazimiera Alberti indirizzata a Maria Grabowiecki non possono essere trattate come una mera procedura d’interpretazione, ma anche, e soprattutto, un impulso per cogliere, per quanto sia possibile, il fulcro centrale del lavoro dell’Alberti. Si tratta di un gesto di ri-creazione, un tentativo di ri-apertura del mondo verso i grandi miti culturali; una passione creativa la cui evocazione poetica diventa reale come l’isola “immaginaria” di Capri.
The article conjoins several interpretative perspectives. The first one focuses on Kazimiera Alberti’s volume of poetry entitled Usta Italji [The Mouth of Italy] published in the 1930s, in which Alberti unconsciously predicts her future. Her poetic excursions into Italian cities, enhanced by autothematic tropes, reveal the writerly-feminine subjectivity. What the biographical discourse delineates there is the frame for affective experiences, such as melancholy, sadness, and passion. This experience of the place would be identified today as the poetics of space, in which actual addresses merge with made up after-images. The second part of the article is devoted to Kazimiera Alberti’s experience of living in – and not only sightseeing – Italy. An analysis of the cultural memory code makes it possible to accurately portray the effort with which the poet seeks an original way of inhabiting the world that spans between the tragic Polish past and the Italian space of salvage. A reflection on Kazimiera Alberti’s letter to Maria Grabowiecka becomes not only an interpretative procedure but also – and primarily – a trigger to discuss the (arguably) central theme in Alberti’s oeuvre: the gesture of re-creation. This gesture stands for the attempt to re-create the world in the language of great cultural myths, or for the creative passion whose poetic evocation is Capri – an island equally real and “made up” or imagined.
