The aim of the paper is to present the history of the Moscow Linguistic Circle whose membershave laid the foundations for themodern, linguistic-oriented literary theory since 1915. The goal of the thesis is to follow the process of establishing the literary theory as an autonomous scientific discipline with its specific research subject, appropriate tools, and terminology. The case of the Circle illustrates that the scientific intuitions of young scholars from Moscow were often ahead of many trends in the twentieth century humanities (e.g. structuralism, statistical poetics, urban studies, sociolinguistics). For this reason the discussion on the intellectual heritage of the Moscow Linguistic Circle is also the reinterpretation of the history of the modern literary theory – necessary in the light of the available, yet poorly recognized archival documents.

In recent years, a canon of modern German literature has been widely discussed, particularly in the context of educational reforms. The discourse has taken place both in the public sphere of (print) media and within the fields of literary studies as well as teaching mehodology, with obvious interferences. Positions reach from demands to foster and revise a canon to its complete rejection as an educated middle-class phenomenon. While literary studies have developed a nomenclatura of the canon concept and reflected on criteria for its compilation, teaching methodology recommends – in view of competence-oriented literature courses – to focus on the teaching of a basic knowledge of literary history, which seems to make the consideration of a canon indispensible in a certain framework.

The article was devoted to the methodology of research on the relationship between literature-religion. Its aim is a critical reflection on the use of the category of ‘the sacred’ in the research. In Poland, in 70. of the last century, ‘the sacred’ has become the vital category for reflections on the religious aspects of literature (eliminating such terms as ‘catholic literature’ and ‘religious literature’). The historiographical method is used in the article. The author presents the steps of the presence of the category ‘the sacred’ in the humanities, especially in the Polish literature studies. The main results of the analysis: sacrological research had prepared us to meet study of literature and cultural studies. Many factors point to the fact that sacral research was one of the first attempts to build a bond between literary and cultural studies. The term ‘the sacred’ did not have classification or typological aim (such function was sometimes assigned to ‘religious literature’ term). Its wide range allowed activities that led to identification of the religious profile of the literary work. Its primary context was not any ideology or religious doctrine, but cultural anthropology, so it demanded culture studies competence more than being involved in world outlook. The wide range of the notion – completely natural and desirable in the anthropology of culture – did not have to be something obvious in the research of separate literary works, at times evoking the image of the world strictly connected with particular religion, or even particular worship. The answer to this was Stefan Sawicki’s offer to replace ‘the sacred’ category when analysing such works with other terms. Organizational measures undertaken by the founder of Lublin school of sacral research were soon verified by the reality of academic discussion – subject, as each discussion, to the rules of terminology fashion. ‘The sacred’ became fashionable term for some time – used and overused, perhaps. It became the key-word to open all possible references to religious sphere in literary works. It was applied not only where the layer of religious meaning remained generalized in the text, but also in those which were distinctly involved in the symbolic world of a specific religion. There were of course attempts to introduce new notion where the context demanded it. Taken in the article analyzes the concept of the sacred in literary studies have been limited mainly to the area of Polish literary criticism. The text encourages further research. It has practical significance. It explains the methods, can serve students and other readers (such as teachers or students) to acquire the skills to interpret literary texts. The topic of the article is an analysis of the positions of today’s interpretations of the old Polish literature. Firstly, the position of the interpreter was examinated in the context of the methodological map of medieval, Renaisssance and Baroque studies in Poland. Secondly, it is about the chronological location of the interpreter, generally beyond the horizon of medieval and early modern authors’ expectations toward future readers, that was limited by the eschatological perspective (near the end of the world). The issues of empathic references and affective reactions have also been raised, which are considered here as a stimulating experience of “recognizing continuity” between the ancient and present epochs. At last, the article presents the justification for the interpretative practice that could be called “the poetology of insight” – in reference to the remarks by Roland Barthes and Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht.

Opis:
The study is the first part of two-volume review of research methodologies, with the help of which in the last two hundred years the works of Old Polish writers, especially Samuel Twardowski, Marcin Paszkowski, Mikołaj Rej, Jan Kochanowski, Piotr Skarga and Wespazjan Kochowski and others were read and interpreted. I took a look at the history of methodology from the first decades of the 19th century until the outbreak of World War II. The starting point of the study are deliberations devoted to the notion of masterfulness and the rules of shaping the canon of Old Polish literature. After the withdrawal of Rhetoric as the native methodology, with the participation of Old Polish texts, the instruments used to read them became leading in individual periods of literature ideologies and philosophical currents. Thus, the historical interpretation of the literary work was abandoned in favor of adaptive interpretation. I took a look at the works from the panoramas showing the review of the entire Old Polish literature to detailed dissertations, studies, sketches and contributions. These studies took the form of annotated bibliographical lists, historical and literary syntheses, monographs of genres and works of individual authors. The scholars of the Enlightenment were primarily using the bio-bibliographic method. They were trying to give a view to the whole history of Polish literature. The beginnings of the history of Polish literature are connected with concern to the high quality of the Polish literary language. The critical view of literary works is interlaced with the prospect of literature as a tool for teaching history, because in writing could be noticed the so-called state of the nation’s spirit. Examined are structure and style of the works, their impact on collective emotions on the ethical layer and in the sphere of the imagination. Historiosophy played a leading role in shaping the methodology. The analysis includes views and methods of reading literary works used among others by Feliks Bentkowski, Eusebius Słowacki, Kazimierz Brodziński, Adam Mickiewicz, Wacław Aleksander Maciejowski (who based his vision of Old literature on the concept of Hegelian three phrases: folk, national and national-folk), Piotr Chmielowski and Bronisław Chlebowski (both represented Positivistic genetism, the second scientist also used anthropogeographic concept of Karl Ritter), Alexander Brückner, Stanisław Turowski, Ignacy Chrzanowski and Juliusz Nowak-Dłużewski who entered the post-war period. The review presents that for the former researchers more important than the autonomous value of the Old Polish work was functioning of its message according to the needs of the readers of modern times. We owe the work of former scholars preservation of the Old Polish writers’ output for the following generations.
Dążyli do tego, by objąć oglądem całość dziejów literatury polskiej. Oglądem objęto poglądy i metody czytania dzieł literackich stosowane m.in. przez Feliksa Bentkowskiego, Euzebiusza Słowackiego, Kazimierza Brodzińskiego, Adama Mickiewicza, Wacława Aleksandra Maciejowskiego (który swą wizję literatury dawnej oparł na koncepcji heglowskich trzech zwrotów: ludowego, narodowego i narodowo-ludowego), Piotra Chmielowskiego, Bronisława Chlebowskiego (obaj reprezentują pozytywistyczny genetyzm, drugi z nich sięgnął dodatkowo do antropogeograficznej koncepcji Karla Rittera), Aleksandra Brücknera, Stanisława Turowskiego, Ignacego Chrzanowskiego i wkraczającego w okres powojenny Juliusza Nowaka-Dłużewskiego.

Early Modern women’s literature, literacy of women in 17th century, canon and canon formation, methodology of literary history, teaching literary history, Anna Stanisławska
Opis:
The absent book “penned by one of the fairer sex”. Women, canon and the studies of early modern Polish literatureThe main goal of the paper is to focus on the image of the past suggested by the present state of the studies of early modern Polish literature and to propose a new and more inclusive approach to it. Using the debate on Western canon and its formation as well as the specific example of A Transaction, or an Account of the Entire Life as an Orphan, a memoir by a 17th century author, Anna Stanisławska, the author of the paper argues that what is believed now to be the canon of early modern Polish literature is rather a result of conscious decisions made by present scholars rather than an adequate representation of the past literature. The paper proposes answers to the following questions: What is lost from the image of the past as argued by the scholars when they fail to mention texts like the Transaction? How does the image of the cultural past change when one decides to acknowledge such texts? In Canon’s discourse. Fragments, the first part of the paper, the author relates briefly the debate on Western canon and its formation. He reminds that the different answers to the central question ‘what Western canon is and how it came to be’ translate to different sets of professional and political responsibilities associated with being a scholar. In Canons, syllabuses, reading material. What is ‘early modern Polish literature’?, which is the second part of the paper, the author tries to pinpoint texts which form the canon of early modern Polish literature. It consists of the texts that are actually taught at the faculties of Polish literature and are presented to their students as the early modern literature. The author analyses the curriculums of certain literary courses held in six Polish universities and finds ten recurring authors. He argues then that these authors, although respected, represent only one type of early modern Polish literature – written by the well-educated, Latin-speaking men. Consequently, the author proposes to broaden the perspective of literary studies by including in their focus such texts as the above mentioned Transaction. In Case study. Anna Stanisławska, women’s literacy and writing in the 17th century, the third part of the paper, he recapitulates briefly Stanisławska’s life and proceeds to show strong connection between Anna’s memoir and literary culture of her age (which can be seen in the way she employs topos humilitatis). He also points out that the appearance of such a text in the 17th century of all periods was no accident. During Stanisławska’s life, the number of schools dedicated solely to educating women in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was increasing. Although the literacy remained far below the level achieved in Western Europe, reading and writing became much more widespread among women. The author argues that leaving Stanisławska’s text out of the curriculum results also in failing to properly represent cultural shifts which came to pass in the 17th-century Poland. The author of the paper concludes that practicing literary history focused both on writers well-known as well as neglected like Stanisławska is a valid opportunity for a modern scholar. Not only does it enable them to create more complete narration about the past, but it also helps them grasp the consequences of the images of the past produced by their narration.

Do we have to convince that the sociology of literature exists? Sociologists who deal with literature professionally, often feel, say, obliged to explain themselves from the choice they make, as if the sociological study of literature was a kind of reason to accuse them of betrayal of their own discipline. They are struggling here not only with the lack of unambiguous methodology of the sociology of literature, but even with an indisputable definition of the area of its interest. In this article, conceived as a preliminary text to this volume, we are trying to consider briefly the causes of the uncertain status of the sociology of literature, and its history and future prospects.

Opis:
The research of Mariana Lanovyk deals with the Literary Criticism problems of translation. In the situation when the plurality of approaches in the Contemporary Literary Criticism can be overwhelming Ukrainian scholars have to work on the adaptation of foreign paradigms in the Ukrainian Criticism space to create solid foundation for the future studies in the fields of the Comparative Literature and Literary Theory. This research is the first attempt in Ukraine to present the integral outlook upon the problems of Literary Translation from the perspectives of the concepts and ideas of different Literary Paradigms of the 19-20th centuries beginning with the Romanticism epoch. Romanticism was chosen as the starting point because in the aesthetic concept of Romanticism there new theoretical approach to the problems of literary translation in the author – language – epoch – nation contexts was outworked. Philosophic, artistic and literary concepts of that time were developed in all modern literary paradigms. The first chapter of the book deals with the psychological and cultural approaches to the problems of the Literary Translation. The author gives short outlook of the genesis of new theoretical background in the aesthetic concept of Romanticism as the source of contemporary theories of translation and the continuation of the ideas in psycholinguistic studies of the Western Europe and in Ukraine, especially in the Potebnja’s literary criticism works. The main attention is concerned on the problem of correlation between thinking process and language, thought and image. The influence of the ideas of 19th century upon the psychoanalysis and their transformation in this paradigm is considered. The author studies the phenomena of consciousness, self consciousness and sub consciousness in the process of reading, understanding and translation as well as the peculiarities of different gender reading, interpretation and translation different elements of the writing works. The differences of literature translation in the realms of biological, linguistic, psychoanalytic and cultural paradigms are considered. The author examines the role of individual and national, historical, cultural memory in literary texts and the possible ways of their transfer. Contemporary approach to the national problem in translation studies development is connected with the key points of national images in literature texts. This idea is rooted in the spectrum of the East-West background as well as national values in the literature systems. The outlook of the multiculturalism and intercultural communication in literature is offered through the review of the artistic nature of the mythological thinking. The wide spectrum of different points of view upon the problem (E.Cassirer, K.G.Jung, E.Noimann, N.Frye) is given. The second chapter of the research deals with the translation criticism ideas in the light of the main concepts of formalism and structuralism. The possible ways of translation analysis as the dissolving problems of form transformation and constructing the literary text by means of the foreign language in foreign literature system are suggested. The concepts of R.Jakobson, J.Tynianov, J.Mukarzevsky, especially the concepts of hierarchy and dominants in literary work, inner structuring and organization of the meaning, functioning of text and its components as the whole are outlined. As the foundation of the research logic of the semiotic analyses was chosen Lotman’s dynamic model of semiotic system, that was proved with adjoining studies of the foreign scholars such as K.Levi-Strauss, J.Mukharzovsky, J.Derrida. Among the narratological questions of fiction translation are discussed such questions as voice authority and correlation of the voices in translated texts; the possibilities of study of different narrative instances of interpreter. In the third chapter the problems of the text reading, realization, interpretation are discussed. The main paradigms involved here are hermeneutics, phenomenology, receptive aesthetics, intuitivism and other irrational approaches to the text interpretation (such as game theory, metaphorology, imagology, relativism theory, discourse analyses). Among the problems of translation from the point of view of hermeneutic approach the main attention is concerned upon the stages of reception, understanding and interpretation as well as the different horizons of reading. The phenomenon of movement of horizons and connected difficulties of fusions of horizons in acts of reception, interpretation and translation are analyzed. The author tries to answer the questions about different points of view and the problem of partial reception and reproducibility; as well as the question of subjectivity in the process of translation. She gives the consideration of the ideas of Ukrainian (A.Potebnja, O.Biletsky) and foreign (F.D.Shleiermaher, V.Dilthey, M.Husserl, H.-G.Gadamer) scholars and examines the possible ways of their application to the translation studies. The thoughts of the phenomenology paradigm are based upon the ideas of E.Husserl, R.Ingarden, P.Ricouer. The main attention is drawn to the spectrum of potential of possible readings and translations of every text from the different time and space perspectives such as different epochs, individual and national experience; historical, cultural and artistic systems. In this way phenomenology of translation reveals new ideas about the text existence and its possible measures. They are connected with the problems of modeling and reflection of the world as the specific author’s vision. New tendencies of resolving of subjectivity of literary texts interpretation coursed with the post structuralism and deconstructivism tendencies are outlined in the key of the hermeneutic concept where the author’s position is dominant in the process of translation. Modern realization of the author’s perspective concept in the works of E.D.Hirsh, J.P.Sartre, U.Eco, N.Frye and others opens rational approach to the problem of resolving of ‘conflict of interpretations’ not only in the dimension of interpretative schemes of literary studies but in the system of translation studies too. On the basis of Relativism theory foundation the author tries to find both the way of synchronizing coordinate systems of original texts and its interpretations and the possible way of synchronizing the systems of interpretative paradigms in contemporary literary studies. In the conclusion the author underlines that shifts of the literary theories paradigms of the 19-20th centuries course the shifts in translation studies thinking; and together they create the common space of semiotic sphere of translation and interpretation. The question of the main importance is to consider the differences of methods of the paradigms as well as their mutual relation, influence and interaction.

According to the researcher, it sets up the biographer’s tone and the whole approach to the subject. This initial part of the upcoming book entitled The Escape is an example of the implementation of the ‘decisive moment’ concept in practice.

Tekst ma więc z jednej strony charakter wprowadzający i instrukcyjny, z drugiej zaś przeglądowy i syntetyczny. Składają się nań cztery części: 1) wyjaśnienie trzech podstawowych pojęć imagologicznych: innego/obcego, obrazu oraz etnotypu; 2) omówienie sposobu doboru materiału źródłowego do badań imagologicznych; 3) charakterystyka możliwych sposobów opracowania wyselekcjonowanego materiału tekstowego, a zatem możliwych profili badań imagologicznych; 4) prezentacja kilku najważniejszych ustaleń imagologii i wskazanie związanych z nimi momentów analizy imagologicznej, w których badacz winien zachować szczególną ostrożność.
The aim of this study is to prepare the literary researcher to conduct imagological research. The text is therefore introductory and instructional on the one hand and reviewing and synthetic on the other. It consists of four parts: (1) an explanation of three basic imagological concepts: other / alien, image, and ethnotype; (2) a discussion of the way in which source material for imagological research is collected; (3) the characteristics of the possible ways of developing the selected text material and therefore possible profiles of imagological research; (4) a presentation of some of the most important findings of imagology and an indication of the related moments of imagological analysis, in which the scholar should exercise particular caution.

Artykuł omawia monografię Marka Zaleskiego Intensywność i rzeczy pokrewne (Warszawa 2022).
The article discusses Marek Zaleski’s monograph Intensywność i rzeczy pokrewne [Intensity and other related matters] (Warsaw 2022). The reviewed book reads like a crossover between a strictly academic text and an essay. In a number of different essays, Zaleski insightfully analyzes the category of intensity and related notions of collective and individual memory. Discussing the problems of contemporary Polish prose, the scholar draws on the findings of the new humanities.

Opis:
Niniejszy tekst wyrasta z potrzeby badań aktualnego świata wartości uczniów, którego obraz należy traktować jako fundament edukacyjnej refleksji i organizacji procesu dydaktycznego. Analiza zgromadzonych wypowiedzi udokumentowała znaczące przesunięcia w obrębie uczniowskiego świata wartości – coraz wydatniejszą dewaluację wartości moralnych, relatywizację zasad etycznych, a także coraz znaczniejszą dominację wartości pragmatycznych, wiązanych z materialnym i wymiernym interesem jednostki.
The following text emerges from the need to research student’s current world of values and the image of such world should be treated as the foundation for educational reflection and the organization of teaching process. The first point of reference for the issue mentioned above was referring to research on the axiological image of young generation, which was conducted within the last thirty years. The second point of reference are the experiences regarding the reception of classic literature at modern school. The issue mentioned in the topic has been discussed in reference to the exemplifying material, which constituted the record of student’s opinions gathered during Polish language classes regarding the very first reception of a literary text chosen for discussion. The analysis of those opinions revealed a significant shift in the area of students’ values, i.e. a clearer devaluation of moral values, relativization of ethical principles, as well as stronger domination of pragmatic values connected with material and tangible interest of an individual. This text also shows a clear withdrawal of young generation from the objective consideration of values. At the end, the author emphasizes that the awareness of such state of things could be of utmost importance to a proper organization of educational processes, as it allows to prevent naïve and inefficient activities and makes it possible to take adequate actions in order to diagnose the state of things and implement appropriate didactic strategies.
