    The article presents Kenneth Burke's concept of literary form. According to Burke, literary form arouses and fulfills reader's desires. Burke presents several types or aspects of form, such as syllogistic progression, qualitative progression, repetitive form, conventional form and minor form. On the one hand, this repertoire of apparently heterogenic literary forms is compatible with traditional literary terms, but on the other hand, the notion of literary form can be applied, in Kantian manner, to human experience and sensual perception in general. Therefore, the question about the specificity of literature and the relation of form and content emerges. One of the suggested answers is that the function of literature is to propose symbols, which are patterns of human experience and play a compensatory role.

    The article consists of two short parts. The first part explores rather theoretical problems chosen by the author during his current work. Among them is the titular problem – the crucial moment in somebody’s life, with all its consequences. The second part contains the opening excerpt from Bobkowski’s biography recently written by the author. According to the researcher, it sets up the biographer’s tone and the whole approach to the subject. This initial part of the upcoming book entitled The Escape is an example of the implementation of the ‘decisive moment’ concept in practice.

    The paper deals with the relationship between the literary form and the message of the pericope John 8:31-36 (along with its immediate literary context). Our examination of five different possible literary forms demonstrated that identifying the precise form bears directly on grasping the correct semantics and pragmatics of this Johannine passage. John 8:31-36 actually reflects the merging of at least two different literary forms: misunderstanding (also called riddle and test) and the covenantal offer of freedom. The ultimate meaning of the text, taken as a whole, should be seen as the offer of freedom. This, however, is misunderstood and eventually rejected by Jesus’ interlocutors, who failed to recognize in Jesus God, the Redeemer and Liberator, and thus did not pass the test of being his true disciples.

    The article is about two stories by Florian Czarnyszewicz, written to them at the end of their lives on the subject of Argentine Polonia, to which he devoted his entire social activity. Biblical themes have been invented in the small literary forms of the writer. A short comparison was made with the works of other writers, in particular with Mikhail Sholohov. Reflections on the usefulness of exploring the small literary forms of the writer before the great ones were quoted.

    This paper seeks to describe the imitation of Platonic dialogues in the aspect of their literary form recognized in Cicero’s De oratore. It requires a presentation of selected polemical interpretations regarding distinct traits of Platonic dialogue as well as taking sides in the matter. The first part of the paper presents G. Zoll’s interpretation of the Platonic dialogue, who in his dissertation on literary form of Ciceronian dialogues labels De oratore the ‘most Platonic’ of his dialogues. In his interpretation, he follows Cicero's way of understanding the features of Plato's masterpieces. Cicero considered the Platonic dialogue to be, first of all, a written tribute paid to the late master by his thankful disciple and, secondly, a text, whose aim is to present a pedagogic situation and to guide its readers. In the second part of the paper an analysis on the double pedagogic situation of De oratore is carried out. In the pedagogic situation presented in the dialogue the role of the master is played by Crassus, while Sulpicius and Cotta are placed on the position of his disciples. This ‘inner’ situation is reflected by the ‘outer’ one, which is evoked on the level of the narrator-author and implied reader. Special attention is paid to various means of building the master’s authority and of enhancing narrator’s importance. The third part of the paper presents briefly opinions of L. Edelstein and P. Plass, who consider Plato’s anonymity to be the most meaningful trait of his works. These commentators stress the presence of aversion towards sophists and speakers of poetical tradition, who usurp the role of the master. This aversion was vividly displayed in many dialogues. According to the mentioned scholars, pedagogy of the Platonic dialogue is different from the ancient model pedagogy, and therefore qualitatively different from Cicero’s pedagogy expressed in De oratore. This confrontation of contagious interpretations of Platonic dialogue facilitates the reevaluation of Cicero’s imitation of Plato’s dialogues.

    Artykuł bada możliwości interpretacyjne struktury Księgi Hioba jako struktury dramatu. Pokazuje, że niektóre pozorne paradoksy i sprzeczności mogą być rozumiane jako wewnętrzna logika dramatu. Pozorna niespójność Prologu i późniejszych twierdzeń Hioba może być zniwelowana, gdy uważnie prześledzi się ciąg przyczynowo-skutkowy oraz będzie się rozumieć wydarzenia jako dziejące się w ciągle aktualizowanej teraźniejszości. Podejście dramatyczne pozwala widzieć spotkanie Boga i Szatana jako nieudaną próbę poczynienia zakładu. Dramat jako pozbawiony wszechwiedzącego narratora pokazuje różnorodne postawy, bez bezpośredniego wskazania, która z nich jest najlepsza. Styl wypowiedzi głównego bohatera jest pełen paradoksów i wykluczających się nawzajem stwierdzeń. Może on być porównany ze współczesną techniką literacką strumienia świadomości. Punkt kulminacyjny dramatu pokazuje trwałą zmianę w postawie bohatera i prowadzi do zaskakujących zmian na poziomie metalingwistycznym.
    The article examines an interpretation possibility to read the structure of the Book of Job as a drama structure. It shows that some of the apparent paradoxes and contradictions in the text can be understood as an inner logic of a drama. The seeming incoherence of narrative Prolog and Job's later statements can be easily reconciled by following through the dramatic cause-effect sequences and seeing the events as happening in permanently changing present. The dramatic approach enables to see the meeting between God and Satan as an unsuccessfully attempt to make a bet. Deprived from omniscient narrator’s perspective, the drama shows various attitudes, without pointing directly which is the best one. Full of paradoxes and contradictory statements, the main hero’s style can be compared with a modern stream of consciousness. The culminating point of the drama shows a durable change in Jobs posture and leads to surprising changes on a metalinguistic level.

    The article reconstructs the development of Ingarden’s viewpoint on the notions of content and form of a literary work of art. The author of the article thus calls up a specific methodological proposition formulated by the phenomenologist, emphasizing the fact that he presented an innovative and original understanding of both these notions. He built his own understanding of content and form on the basis of the layered structure of literary works of art. Assumptions of the latter became the source of concrete and precise formulations of the meaning of both categories, which – in accordance with the message of the article – seem commendable and worth of being employed by the contemporary researchers of literature.

    The aim of this article is to present a part of the research results regarding the functioning of phraseological units (i.e. their canonical and innovative forms) in the Polish texts of contemporary prose translated from French. Consequently, there has been created a classification covering various types of relations occurring in given contexts between Polish phraseological units used by translators and the source texts. The practice shows that a translator decides from time to time to interpose a phraseological unit in a given context of the final text, even if there is no any kind of fixed expression in the original. Therefore, it is worth trying to find an answer to a question about translation decisions in this matter.

    The article attempts to reveal a reconstruction of Piotr Chmielowski’s critical thought regarding the poetical works written by Adam Asnyk (pen-name E...ly). The starting point for the discussion is a set of variations for different editions of Zarys literatury polskiej as well as other works of the critic elucidating the specificity, importance and the character of the poetry of E…ly. The article attempts to show why it was just the figure of the poet that was necessary and constituted a model figure for revealing the attempts of saving continuance of not only Polish poetry but also national culture and heritage. In his critical reflection, Chmielowski tries to find continuity between the Romantic paradigm and the post-January insurgency paradigm that was to define the obligations and the status of poetry, as well as to identify, uphold important question for Chmielowski himself as to why it was necessary to find among the generation of post-insurgency Poles a figure that would resemble Ignacy Kraszewski, a man-institution, and thus provide an exemplary model, necessary and much needed model figure in upholding and maintaining national consciousness and in preserving continuity. It is the culture and literature of the latter half of the nineteenth century that Chmielowski investigates in search of poetry and the poet as an icon of the nineteenth centuryness and modernity in the post-January insurgency non-poetical times. Asnyk can be seen, in Chmielowski’s terms, as an icon of the modern poet, a keystone figure who straddled the line between what can be consolidated and what was left to be saved in order to preserve the paradigm of Romantic poeticalness and the necessity for adjusting to new cultural circumstances and contemporary expectations on the part of receivers.

The Social Ontology of Art Under Capitalism. Z kolei w drugiej części, inspirowanej projektem konstelacji krytycznych, na przykładzie heterogenicznych wypowiedzi z lat 90. XX wieku autor śledzi przejawy charakterystycznej dla późnokapitalistycznych społeczeństw ideologii estetycznej, w myśl której dzieło literackie jest takim samym towarem, jak każdy inny.
    In the first part of the article, the author attempts to employ concepts discussed by Nicholas Brown in Autonomy. The Social Ontology of Art Under Capitalism in the analysis of the history of Polish literary criticism. In the second part, inspired by the project of critical constellations, the author traces the manifestations of the aesthetic ideology characteristic of late capitalist societies, according to which a literary work is a commodity like any other. He analyzes heterogeneous critical writings from the 1990s.

    This article analyses early prosaic texts by Vera Linhartova, i.e. texts written from 1957 to 1961, but published between 1964 and 1968. The focus is especially on discourse ana- lysis of four texts: Povidka nesouvisla (written 1958), Metuv źivot v obrysech (written on 23rd Julyl960), Rozprava o zdviźi (written in 1960) and Raći kanon na besovske tema (written on 15th December 1960). This contribution tries to introduce grammatical, styli- stics and literary means, which are used to demonstrate the creative power of the word in the poetics of this author. It is pointed out that explicit (verbal) and implicit (structural) manifestation of the author’s “creative power” over her texts is conditioned by the ontolo- gical-existential dimension of the author’s poetics, but is further orientated towards aims relating to communication.

    The paper focuses on the analysis of free indirect discourse as a modernist narrative form. We outline the basic narrative and linguistic characteristics of free indirect discourse and examine its main functions in the literary texts. We undertake a comparative analysis of three examples of free indirect discourse (drawn from the texts of G. Flaubert, F. Kafka and V. Nabokov) and display their common and distinctive features.
