Opis:: In the contemporary literary studies, the category ‘motto’ has a well-established position, although one often meets an opinion that a uniform theory of universal motto has not been developed yet. This article is an attempt to synthesise the existing findings about the motto. It presents an overview of the most interesting research positions. This allows us to illustrate, in general terms, how the meaning of the motto changed from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, and how it evolved from a very general blurry meaning to the one representing the main characteristics of intertextuality.

Opis:: This article presents a new reading of the spoof poetic manifesto ‘Chamuły poezji’ [‘The Cads of Poetry’] written by Julian Przyboś in 1926. His use of the apocalyptic tones of early modernist poetry to lampoon a trio of acclaimed poets associated with Young Poland (especially Jan Kasprowicz) suggests a complex nature of Przyboś’s rejection and dependence on that movement. In general, the influence of Young Poland, though quite conspicuous in is juvenilia and early publications, tends to fade away. ‘Chamuły’ is a pejorative nonce word which alludes to the Biblical Ham as well as a Polish word for a cad or ill-bred bumpkin. This article adds to it another layer of meaning, based on Derrida’s interpretation of the Apocalypse, with allusions to sexual and genital imagery. And more generally, it reframes the whole Przyboś’s poetic work (not just his early poems) using Catherine Malabou’s concept of plasticity. Seen in a broader historical perspective, Przyboś’s struggles to break with Young Poland are not unlike the predicament of many eighteenth-century writers caught in the dispute between the Moderns and the Ancients, satirized in Swift’s Battle of the Books. The overall conclusion of this study is that at all times the avant-garde and the arrière-garde remain in a continuous dialogue and the innovators never lose sight of those left behind. Poetry is, after all, metamorphic and cannot be contained within within the bounds of manifestoes and artistic programmes.

Opis:: Czesław Miłosz remains among the most important foreign authors and literary authorities for Chinese poets. Initially received in China with distrust and uncertainty, then portrayed in the official state discourse of romantic-revolutionary literature as the bard of socialism, Miłosz became the spiritual father of the younger generation affected by the Cultural Revolution and Tiananmen Square Massacre, a witness of the age, and a symbol of intellectual independence and resistance against totalitarianism. After a period of reading Miłosz in terms of ethical and political categories, Chinese reviews and literary texts in the 2010s and 2020s increasingly refer to Miłosz as philosophical and metaphysical poet. This article analyses Miłosz’s reception in China, paying attention to the historical, cultural, and linguistic factors that shaped the assimilation of his work and the values he brought to Chinese poetry.

Uwaga zostaje zwrócona na bohemistyczny wątek, obecny niemal we wszystkich wydanych tomach w ramach większości stałych rubryk, tworzących szkielet konstrukcyjny czasopisma. Autorka omawia też fenomen ogromnego zainteresowania kulturą czeską w Bułgarii, wyjaśniając jego przyczyny. Szczegółowo zaprezentowane są 3 tomy poświęcone zagadnieniom z zakresu kultury i literatury czeskiej.
The author reviews the 28 issues of the scientific journal „Славянски диалози” that have been published so far. The journal has been published since 2004, and its publisher is the Faculty of Philology of the University of Paisij Chilendarski in Plovdiv. Attention is drawn to the bohemian thread, present in almost all published volumes in most of the permanent columns that make up the structure of the journal. The author also discusses the phenomenon of great interest in Czech culture in Bulgaria, explaining its reasons. Three volumes are presented in detail devoted to issues in the field of Czech culture and literature.

Opis:: This paper seeks to describe the imitation of Platonic dialogues in the aspect of their literary form recognized in Cicero’s De oratore. It requires a presentation of selected polemical interpretations regarding distinct traits of Platonic dialogue as well as taking sides in the matter. The first part of the paper presents G. Zoll’s interpretation of the Platonic dialogue, who in his dissertation on literary form of Ciceronian dialogues labels De oratore the ‘most Platonic’ of his dialogues. In his interpretation, he follows Cicero's way of understanding the features of Plato's masterpieces. Cicero considered the Platonic dialogue to be, first of all, a written tribute paid to the late master by his thankful disciple and, secondly, a text, whose aim is to present a pedagogic situation and to guide its readers. In the second part of the paper an analysis on the double pedagogic situation of De oratore is carried out. In the pedagogic situation presented in the dialogue the role of the master is played by Crassus, while Sulpicius and Cotta are placed on the position of his disciples. This ‘inner’ situation is reflected by the ‘outer’ one, which is evoked on the level of the narrator-author and implied reader. Special attention is paid to various means of building the master’s authority and of enhancing narrator’s importance. The third part of the paper presents briefly opinions of L. Edelstein and P. Plass, who consider Plato’s anonymity to be the most meaningful trait of his works. These commentators stress the presence of aversion towards sophists and speakers of poetical tradition, who usurp the role of the master. This aversion was vividly displayed in many dialogues. According to the mentioned scholars, pedagogy of the Platonic dialogue is different from the ancient model pedagogy, and therefore qualitatively different from Cicero’s pedagogy expressed in De oratore. This confrontation of contagious interpretations of Platonic dialogue facilitates the reevaluation of Cicero’s imitation of Plato’s dialogues.

Opis:: The article investigates references to Shakespeare in the works of Viktor Shklovsky, an outstanding representative of the Russian formalism. The author of the paper analyses literary studies by Shklovsky in which Shakespeare’s texts are interpreted. In his early works (dating to the 1920s–1930s) Shklovsky referred to Shakespeare to justify the new terminology of the Russian formalism, while his later works were devoted to the study of Shakespeare’s texts.
В статье рассмотрен шекспировский дискурс в работах видного представителя русского формализма Виктора Шкловского. Автор анализирует литературоведческие работы Шкловского, в которых интерпретируются тексты Шекспира. В ранних работах 1920–30-х годов В. Шкловский обращался к Шекспиру для обоснования новой терминологии русских формалистов, а более поздние работы ученого уже непосредственно посвящены изучению произведений Шекспира.

Opis:: The article discusses the issue of the other that is widely manifested in literature and cultural studies, however has little presence in the school practice. The implementation of cultural studies to school curricula can bring numerous benefits to teaching Polish language and literature. A broadly conceived interest in the otherness, the other and multiculturalism as seen in the literature can be reflected in humanistic education. Cultural and ethnic otherness cannot be treated stereotypically or as the great absent. To successfully address the problem, however, the Polish school has yet to open up for the issue of multi- and interculturalism.

Opis:: En el presente artículo comentamos el carácter paradójico de la traducción literaria percibida como una de las herramientas para el diálogo intercultural. Cada traducción de este tipo se realiza dentro de un marco de posibilidades vinculadas a varios factores, desde las aficiones y las capacidades del traductor, pasando por las condiciones del actual mercado editorial, hasta la situación política local e internacional. Además, frente a la creciente conciencia de la intrínseca intraducibilidad de los textos, relacionada con la estructura del lenguaje como tal, parece fortalecerse la tendencia a considerar la traducción no tanto como una transferencia de significados, sino más bien como un tipo de creación original. Esta constelación de factores, que siempre funcionan de manera caótica y arbitraria, constituye, sin embargo, una de las bases más importantes del diálogo intercultural. Concentrándonos en el diálogo cultural polaco-argentino, tomando en cuenta la marginalidad de las dos culturas en cuestión y ubicándonos en el mapa de las discusiones traductológicas recientes, trataremos, primero, de mostrar qué consecuencias tienen estos factores para las relaciones culturales entre Polonia y Argentina y, segundo, de proponer un proyecto cuyo objetivo sería mejorar la eficacia de las transferencias culturales entre ambos países.
In this paper we discuss the paradoxical nature of the literary translation seen as one of the tools for international dialogue. Every literary translation depends on a variety of factors, starting with the interests and capacities of the translator and ending with the conditions of the editorial market and with the local and international political situation. Also, in view of the increasing consciousness of the intrinsic untranslatability of every text, resulting from the very essence of language, we can observe a strong tendency to perceive the translation more as an original creation than an effort to transfer meanings. This constellation of factors, which seem to function chaotically and arbitrarily, is, however, one of the most important foundations of every international dialogue. Concentrating on the cultural dialogue between Poland and Argentina and taking in consideration the marginality of these two cultures, we will demonstrate the consequences of the factors above for the cultural relations between the two countries and we will try to imagine how to improve the effectiveness of the cultural transfers between them.
