    Opis:
    À partir d’un corpus d’une dizaine d’ouvrages (des éditeurs Belfond, Bordas, Buchet, Corti, Girodias, Laffont, Nadeau, Nyssen, Pauvert, Verny et Zylberstein), cet article esquisse une petite poétique des mémoires d’éditeurs, genre qui oscille entre autobiographie, histoire et portraits, et qui conjugue mémoire individuelle et mémoire collective. L’étude porte sur les différentes composantes et les topoï de ce type de récit : le récit de formation, les motifs de la passion pour la lecture et le livre comme objet, le récit de fondation, la description des tâches de l’éditeur (choix des manuscrits, accompagnement des auteurs, course aux prix littéraires…). Présentant une vision pragmatique de la production du livre, les mémoires d’éditeurs apportent un éclairage alternatif et précieux sur la littérature : contexte historique de sa production, conditions matérielles et financières de la création, stratégies auctoriales et éditoriales, rapports entre auteurs et éditeurs, et ils offrent une galerie de portraits dans laquelle les écrivains apparaissent sous un jour nouveau.
    Based on a corpus of ten works (of the following publishers: Belfond, Bordas, Buchet, Corti, Girodias, Laffont, Nadeau, Nyssen, Pauvert, Verny and Zylberstein), this paper tries to define a small poetics of publishers’ memoirs, a genre which oscillates between an autobiography, a story and a portrait, and which mixes individual and collective memory. The study focuses on different components and topoï of this kind of narratives: a Bildungsroman, themes of passion for books and a book as an object, a foundation story, a description of a publisher’s tasks (choice of manuscripts, supporting authors, running for literary awards, etc.). Presenting a pragmatic view on the production of books, publishers’ memoirs offer a gallery of renewed portraits of different writers, as well as afford an alternative and interesting glance at literature, and in particular at: historical context of its production, material and pecuniary conditions of its creation, author’ and publishers’ strategies, relationships between authors and publishers.

    Rok 2021, w którym przypada dziesięciolecie pracy twórczej Tomasza Bąka, zachęca do oglądania dorobku poety z wielu perspektyw. Autorka artykułu w swoich rozważaniach skupiła się na analizie i interpretacji twórczości Tomasza Bąka przez pryzmat otrzymanych przez poetę nagród poetyckich; instytucję nagrody potraktowała jako punkt węzłowy, który jednocześnie pozwala na czytanie tekstu z bliska, ale też z oddalenia. Przyjęta rama umożliwia usytuowanie poezji Bąka w szerszym kontekście poetyckiego pola, odsłania, choćby częściowo, mechanizmy jego działania. Nagrody literackie nie są bowiem punktowym wydarzeniem w rocznym porządku życia literackiego, ale funkcjonują na prawach instytucji zarządzającej przepływem prestiżu autora, działalnością wydawnictw, gustami czytelników (w tym krytyków i jurorów), a nawet kształtem wspólnoty (dzięki temu, że wpływają na tworzenie kanonu literackiego). Poezja Bąka jest w tym ujęciu niemal modelowym przykładem: zaistniała, rozwija się i ewoluuje dzięki nagrodom – dzięki nim jest również petryfikowana.
    The year 2021, which marks the 10th anniversary of Tomasz Bąk’s literary debut, invites us to examine the poet’s work and his achievements from many perspectives. In her reflections, Agnieszka Budnik analyses and interprets Bąk’s poetry through the prism of his awards. She treats the literary award as an institution and a nodal point, which makes possible the reading of the poetic text up close and simultaneously from a distance. This approach allows Budnik to position Bąk’s poetry in the broader context of a poetic field and thus to uncover, if only partially, the mechanisms at work in that field. Literary awards are not, she argues, a point-like event in the annual literary calendar; rather, they operate like an institution by managing the flow of the author’s prestige, the operations of publishing houses, the tastes of readers (including critics and jurors), and even the shape of the community (thanks to the fact that they affect the formation ofthe literary canon). Seen from this perspective, Bąk’s poetry can be regarded as a model example of these processes: it came into being and has evolved thanks to awards, but awards have also caused it to be petrified.

    The year of the fall of the Berlin Wall is an important turning point in the history of the 20th century Europe. It symbolises the erosion of the communist system, which in Poland had began thirteen years earlier – with breaking the omnipotence of censorship by the independent self-publishing. When in 1989 the Opposition came to power, they changed both the economic and political system, which in turn changed the whole Polish culture – the book market, publishers’ position, function of the magazines, and even writers’ status. The readers’ first reaction was a sudden increase of interest in the emigrant, gulag, and underground literature, however, not even a decade passed, when that interest started fading. Then came the second wave: popular literature (romances, crime stories, thrillers, speculative fiction). Also, there were changes in the literary life: the dominant role of the capital city during the Polish People’s Republic had been undermined by local initiatives (including art zines, publishing houses in the provinces), “the headquarters’” position was nevertheless maintained by the state television and the authority of the Nike Literary Award, which had been created in 1996. Poetry was dominated by “the old poets” (Cz. Miłosz, T. Różewicz, Z. Herbert, W. Szymborska), who, despite nearing the ends of their lives, were in an exceptionally good literary shape. They were accompanied by the authors of The New Wave, with whom the poets of “BruLion” group soon waged war. In prose, the writers born around 1960, who are well-known today in Europe (e.g. O. Tokarczuk), gained a strong position. The world recognition was also won over by the masters of the Polish reportage (e.g. R. Kapuściński, H. Krall) and their pupils (W. Tochman, W. Jagielski, M. Szczygieł).

    The article concerns the occurrences of the lexeme soul in contemporary Polish poetry. Due to the extensive amount of material available for analysis, it concentrates on volumes that were awarded or nominated in the selected Polish poetry contests in 2010–2015 (Wisława Szymborska Award, “Nike” Literary Award, “Silesius” Wrocław Poetry Award, Kościelscy Award, “Orfeusz” K. I. Gałczyński Poetry Award, “Gdynia” Literary Prize and “Złoty Środek Poezji” Award). The article presents the contexts of occurrence of the lexeme dusza (soul), as well as the related lexemes duch (spirit) and duszyczka (small soul – animula), it characterizes the term in relation to its both religious and non-religious aspects, and shows what functions it serves in poetic texts.
    Artykuł dotyczy wystąpień leksemu dusza w najnowszej poezji polskiej. Z uwagi na zakres materiału dostępnego do analizy rozważania skupiają się na tomach nagrodzonych lub nominowanych do nagród w wybranych ogólnopolskich konkursach poetyckich w latach 2010–2015 (Nagroda im. Wisławy Szymborskiej, Nagroda Literacka „Nike”, Wrocławska Nagroda Poetycka „Silesius”, Nagroda Fundacji im. Kościelskich, Nagroda Poetycka im. K. I. Gałczyńskiego „Orfeusz”, Nagroda Literacka „Gdynia” oraz Nagroda „Złoty Środek Poezji”). W artykule przedstawione są konteksty pojawiania się leksemu dusza oraz leksemów pokrewnych: duch i duszyczka, charakterystyka tego pojęcia z uwzględnieniem aspektów religijnych i niereligijnych, a także funkcje, jakie zyskuje ono w tekstach poetyckich.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest polityczność i zaangażowanie polskiej poezji współczesnej po 1989 r. Choć przytaczane w tekście utwory powstały po 2000 r., to przemiany ustrojowe, które zaczęły się w 1989 r., ukształtowały – zdaniem autorki – obecny rynek poetycki w sposób, który determinuje powstającą w jego ramach twórczość. Celem tekstu jest analiza polityczności współczesnej poezji polskiej na trzech płaszczyznach, które są wyznaczane przez następujące pytania: (1) jak przemiany ustrojowe i upowszechnienie w Polsce wolnego rynku wpłynęły na styl uprawiania poezji? (2) jakie wątki społeczno-polityczne pojawiają się w poezji współczesnej? (3) jak upolityczniony jest rynek wydawniczy w Polsce oraz przyznawanie nagród literackich? Autorka stara się odpowiedzieć na te pytania, dokonując analizy treści wybranych utworów poetyckich, a także dyskursu toczącego się w środowisku literackim.
    The subject of the article is the politicalness and involvement of Polish contemporary poetry after 1989. Although the works quoted in this text were created after 2000, the systemic transformations that began in 1989 shaped — according to the author — the current poetic market in a way that determines the creativity arising within its framework. The aim of the text is to analyze the politicization of the contemporary Polish poetry on three levels, which are determined by the following questions: (1) how have political changes and the expansion of the free market in Poland influenced the style of poetry? (2) what socio-political threads appear in contemporary poetry? (3) what is the impact of politics on the publishing market in Poland and the awarding of literary prizes? The author tries to answer these questions by analyzing the content of selected poetic works, as well as the discourse taking place in the literary milieu.

    The article discusses the publishing activities of Roy Publishers in New York from 1940 to the 1960s, particularly its impact on popularizing Polish literature and information about Poland in the U.S. The publishing house continued the tradition of the former house, named “Rój”, which was active during 1924-1940 in Warsaw and established by Melchior Wańkowicz, then managed together with Marian Kister. The article is based on the materials from the publishing house archive, now held at Stanford University Libraries, a valuable research source on the émigré cultural heritage of the 2nd Republic of Poland.

    The article discusses the circumstances surrounding the founding of the Association of Polish Writers Abroad (SPPzG) by Dr. Alina Siomkajło in London in 2010, oppositional to the Union of Polish Writers Abroad (ZPPnO), also in Great Britain, which had been active since 1945. The method of qualitative analysis was used to review the anti-communist content, the right-wing magazine.

    The Author of this very article explains the term ‘essay writing’ through the analogy with the theory of autobiography. Main questions, asked throughout the article, concerns ‘womens essay’ and influence of literary criticism on multiple genre conventions. Furthermore there are discussed a few examples of women writers and their work in the field of ‘literary essay’. Books, written by women, sometimes described as ‘essayistic’ or ’autobiographical’, remain dependent on different institutions, such as: publishing houses and universities, and are related to literary criticism and awards.
