The paper discusses the style o f conversation in a Czech talk show called “Všechnopárty”, and the negotiation of positions in this type of media dialogue. It compares different distribution o f positions in three talk shows of Czech television and tries to define some more or less fixed features of this genre (such as asymmetry, or the dominant function of entertainment). A special attention is given to the role of the variety of Czech that is used by the hosts and guests in positioning: it seems that the talk show is a type of a private conversation w ith the participants using particularly colloquial Czech. Nevertheless, different sociolects of the interlocutors (who belong to different generations and professional groups) are an important component of the positioning and permanent negotiation.

A meta-structuralist trap: Periodisation and Jan Mukařovský’s structuralismThe aim of this article is to show some methodological traps connected with the common tendency for periodisation of phenomena or processes in research, basing on the example of secondary literature about Czech structuralism, especially Jan Mukařovský’s theory. The author describes the narratives shaped in these works and shows how their symbolic charge directs the way of thinking about the heritage of the Prague school and Jan Mukařovský, which may influence the interpretation of his literary and aesthetic theory. Meta-strukturalistyczna pułapka. Zrekonstruowane zostają kształtowane w tych opracowaniach narracje, których ładunek symboliczny ukierunkowuje – często nadmiernie – sposób myślenia o dziedzictwie szkoły praskiej oraz o Janie Mukařovskim, co może wpływać na interpretacje jego refleksji literaturoznawczej i estetycznej.

Artykuł stanowi próbę analizy literackiego dialogu dwojga przedstawicieli czeskiego undergroundu: Egona Bondy'ego i Honzy Krejcarovej. Twórcy ci inspirowali się ideami oraz tematyką zakazaną w krajach Bloku Wschodniego. W centrum zainteresowania stawiali erotyzm oraz wyzwoloną seksualność, mieszając kicz i transcendencję i wykorzystując Bachtinowską estetykę „cielesnego dołu”. Właśnie w sztuce Bondy i Krejcarová odnajdywali swój azyl oraz wolność. Kluczem do odczytania poszczególnych utworów jest, moim zdaniem, transgresja – zwłaszcza ta, o której w swojej filozofii pisze Georges Bataille. Okazuje się, że „przekroczenie” stanowi dla twórców metodę wyzwolenia z okowów sztuki socrealistycznej. Literacki dialog prowadzony w tak zwanym samizdacie, a więc poza oficjalnym obiegiem, do dziś nie stracił swego skandalicznego wydźwięku.
The article attempts to analyse the literary dialogue between two representatives of Czech underground Culture: Egon Bondy and Honza Krejcarová. The authors were inspired by ideas and subjects which were forbidden in the countries of Eastern Europe under communism. Their focus was eroticism and liberated sexuality, mixing kitsch and transcendency, with use of the Bakhtin's aesthetics of lower stratum of the body. For Bondy and Krejcarová art was a way to find refuge and seek freedom. In my opinion the key to interpret their work is transgression, especially as described in the philosophic work of Georges Bataille. It turns out, that ‘to go beyond’ is for the authors a way to break free from the bonds of socrealistic art. The dialogue held in the so called samizdat, by clandestine copying and distribution, has not lost its scandalous undertone in the course of time.

Pavel Zajíček was a leading personality of Czech rock and literary underground in the 1970s. His imprisonment in 1976 was an important impuls for creation of Charta 77. Communist establishment wanted to get rid of him and therefore (though he was a dissident) he was given his passport and allowed to leave Czechoslovakia for Sweden. In exile he continued in writing and in 1995 he returned to Prague. The present study deals with both invariable and variable qualities of his poetry created after his return. The detailed analysis of his collection of poems called Zvuky sirén a zvonů (The Sounds of Sirens and Bells, 2001) proves that the latest texts of Pavel Zajíček rank among the most original examples of Czech alternative poetry, independent on praised literary tradition.

Článek vykládá Upřímné mínění o almanachu Lada Nióla, sepsané Karlem Havlíčkem v Brixenu ve dnech 23. a 24. 12. 1854, jako významný literárně kritický text, ve kterém Havlíček odmítl romantické tendence almanachu iniciovaného J. V. Fričem v duchu intencí literárního realismu. Přibližuje, jak se Havlíčkova kritika - stylizovaná částečně jako osobní list, částečně jako náčrt recenzního posudku - vyrovnávala s jednotlivými přispěvateli a příspěvky almanachu. Do relativně bohaté veřejné diskuse, která po vydání Lady Nióly následovala v novinách a časopisech, Havlíčkovo Upřímné mínění... vzhledem k cenzurní situaci svého autora vstoupit nemohlo, soukromě se s ním mohl seznámit jen úzký okruh aktérů pražského literárního dění 50. let 19. století. Článek v závěru konstatuje, že sám Frič Havlíčkovu kritiku svého almanachu zkreslil, když o ní informoval ve svých pozdějších Pamětech, a přispěl tak k tomu, že Upřímné mínění... nebylo dosud zařazeno v dějinách české literární kritiky na místo, které si Havlíčkův kritický výkon zasluhuje.
The article interprets Uprímné mínení o almanachu Lada Nióla, written by Karl Havlícek in Brixen on December 23 and 24, 1854, in which Havlícek rejected the romantic tendencies of almanac initiated by J. V. Fric in the spirit of literary realism. The author describes how Havlícek’s criticism concerned individual authors and the contribution of the almanac. Uprímné mínení... by Havlícek could not join the discussion that began after the publication of Lady Nióla in newspapers and magazines. Only a narrow circle of literary actors from the 1950s could meet him privately. The author states that Fric himself distorted Havlícek’s criticism of his almanac when he reported it in his later memoirs (Pametí), thus contributing to the fact that Uprímné mínení o almanachu Lada Nióla was not yet considered in the history of Czech literary criticism in the place that Havlícek deserves

The tendency to operate freely with devices of all language varieties and with characteristic practices of various functional styles is one of the significant features of the literary style. This paper focuses on the vast use of non-standard language varieties, especially colloquial Czech, in modern Czech literary texts. In these texts, the elements of non-standard language occur not only as a means for creating the impression of authentic communication in everyday life, but also as a bearer of (both positive and negative) values and as a source of specific aesthetic qualities. In a short outline, the individual phases of the evolution of exploiting the non-standard language devices in Czech literary style are described and illustrated on textual examples.

The aim of this paper, is to try to use feminist and gender theories to read Slavic cultural material, as well as to complete the picture of diversity of Slavic gender orders. For this purpose, the paper focuses on biographies written by Renáta Tyršová devoted to her father and husband. The analysis of this case requires using the feminist criticism of autobiography theory, which is hardly theoretically absorbed within Slavistics. Article seeks to explore the complexities of the relationship between female individual autobiographical “self”, structure of female gender in the bourgeois society of the 19th century, and finally collective idea of nationalism.

This essay offers an overview of the diversity of women’s prose writing that emerged on the Czech cultural scene in the post-communist era. To that end it briefly characterizes the work of eight Czech women authors who were born within the first two decades after World War II and began to create during the post-1968 era of ‘normalization’. In this broad sense they belong to a single generation. With rare exception their work was not officially published in their homeland until the 1990s. The writers included are: Lenka Procházková, Tereza Boučková, Alexandra Berková, Zuzana Brabcová, Daniela Hodrová, Sylvie Richterová, Iva Pekárková, and Eva Hauserová. The overview is followed by a concise comparative analysis of texts by three very different writers (Procházková, Pekárková, and Hodrová), using a feminist critical approach. There is also an appendix of works by these writers available in English translation.

The article offers a new perspective on the phenomenon of code-switching by looking at it from the point ofview of translation studies. In doing so, the article addresses the general issue of untranslatability as well. Boththeoretical topics are discussed using the example of the German translation of the Czech novel Konec punkuv Helsinkách written by Jaroslav Rudiš. The aim of the article is to identify the different compensation strategiesused to translate the untranslatable, i.e., the Czech-German and Czech-English code-switching in the novel.
