Although problems of this type sometimes have a relatively simple formulation, there are many difficulties associated with their solution even when the most up-to-date computers are used. In the 1970s many papers have been devoted to this problem. The purpose of the vast majority of them has been to find more effective solution algorithms. "In this paper we give the solution of the traveling salesman problem via disjunctive graphs. Up to now the elements of disjunctive graphs have been used to solve problems connected with the determination of an optimal task completion sequence.''

The author reviews results (without proofs) from the theory of minimal projective operators. As he remarks, an excellent introduction to this theory is the survey paper by E. W. Cheney and K. H. Price [Approximation theory (Proc. Sympos., Lancaster, 1969), pp. 261–289, Academic Press, London, 1970; MR0265842]. The author is motivated by a number of papers in this topic published after 1970, bringing essentially new results, e.g., an existence theorem for the minimal operators in the class of all projective operators from a linear normed space onto its subspace due to P. D. Morris and Cheney [J. Reine Angew. Math. 270 (1974), 61–76; MR0358188]. The paper consists of the following chapters: (0) Introduction; (1) Projective operators; (2) Fundamental properties of minimal projective operators; (3) Existence and characterization of minimal projective operators; (4) Some polynomial projective operators in the space C[−1,1]; References (45 items).

The paper is concerned with stability properties of bounded outer inverses for bounded operators on Banach spaces. We investigate the effect of perturbations of subspaces generating outer inverses for a given operator. We prove that the convergence of respective gaps between subspaces implies the convergence in the norm of outer inverses generated by these subspaces. The notion of outer inverses is illustrated by an example which gives the form of outer inverses for an arbitrary matrix.

Consider an incomplete multiresponse experiment with a classification of the observations into u classes. The class Si contains ti treatments with ni observations. Thus, the experiment can be described by the set {Y1,Y2,...,Yu}, where Yi are ni×ti random matrices of observations from the class Si. For the expectation of each Yi a linear model with main and nuisance parameters is proposed. The problem of (linear) estimation of the main parameters is considered using results of R. The paper presents a spectral solution of the Rayleigh equation for the case of parallel, free shear layer with the hyperbolic-tangent mean velocity profile. The expansion of the eigenfunction into the Chebyshev polynomial series allowed transformation of the differential eigenvalue problem into the general algebraic one. The standard algebraic eigenvalue problem was obtained by the use of Gary & Helgasson transformation. The results were compared with the shooting method. Although the calculations were carried out in order to validate the method, some additional study of the velocity ratio and momentum thickness influence on the temporal eigenmode growth rate was also performed.

The following is a short survey of the notion of a well-posed linear system. We start by describing the most basic concepts, proceed to discuss dissipative and conservative systems, and finally introduce J-energy-preserving systems, i.e., systems that preserve energy with respect to some generalized inner products (possibly semi-definite or indefinite) in the input, state and output spaces. The class of well-posed linear systems contains most linear time-independent distributed parameter systems: internal or boundary control of PDE's, integral equations, delay equations, etc. These systems have existed in an implicit form in the mathematics literature for a long time, and they are closely connected to the scattering theory by Lax and Phillips and to the model theory by Sz.-Nagy and Foias. The theory has been developed independently by many different schools, and it is only recently that these different approaches have begun to converge. One of the most interesting objects of the present study is the Riccati equation theory for this class of infinite-dimensional systems (H2- and Hinfty-theories).

We survey the literature on well-posed linear systems, which has been an area of rapid development in recent years. We examine the particular subclass of conservative systems and its connections to scattering theory. We study some transformations of well-posed systems, namely duality and time-flow inversion, and their effect on the transfer function and the generating operators. We describe a simple way to generate conservative systems via a second-order differential equation in a Hilbert space. We give results about the stability, controllability and observability of such conservative systems and illustrate these with a system modeling a controlled beam.

The position vector of the deformed shell reference surface is expressed by its projection onto the coordinate plane and the height function over that plane. The projected position is then determined by quadratures entirely from three surface strains and the height function. The latter fields can be found as solutions to the non-linear boundary value problem of thin elastic shells, developed by Szwabowicz (1999). The corresponding displacement field is determined from the deformed position vector by simple algebraic formulae.
Wektor wodzący powierzchni podstawowej powłoki odkształconej wyrażono przez jego rzut na płaszczyznę odniesienia i funkcję wysokości ponad tę płaszczyznę. Zrzutowane składowe tego wektora wyznaczono za pomocą kwadratur zależnych od odkształceń powierzchni i funkcji wysokości, które można wyznaczyć, rozwiązując zagadnienie brzegowe nieliniowej teorii cienkich powłok sprężystych w postaci zaproponowanej przez Szwabowicza (1999). Odnośne pole przemieszczeń wyznaczono przy pomocy prostych wzorów algebraicznych.

The linear stability of a flow in a channel subject to periodically distributed suction applied at the wallsis investigated. The focus is on the relation between unstable modes observed in such a flow and the stability properties of the flow without suction (the Poiseuille flow). It is demonstrated that linearly unstable modes appearing in the presence of suction can be interpreted as modified Orr-Sommerfeld's or Squire's eigenmodes of the Poiseuille flow. Originally, these modes have the streamwise wave number equal to zero, i.e. they are invariant in the streamwise direction. When the surface suction is applied, the modes are additionally modulated along the channel and they become dependent on the streamwise variable. In the range of the parameters studied, a pair of such modes, one Orr-Sommerfeld's and one Squire's, can be simultaneously unstable. Certain properties of these modes are discussed in some details. Specifically, the influence of non-symmetric suction on stability characteristics is analysed.
W pracy rozważa się zagadnienie liniowej stateczności przepływu cieczy w płaskim kanale, w obecności periodycznie rozłożonego odsysania/wypływu przez ściany. Celem analizy jest identyfikacja zaburzeń krytycznych i objaśnienia ich związku z rozwiązaniami własnymi zagadnienia stateczności dla przepływu Poiseuille'a. Stosując metodę kontynuacji wartości i rozwiązań własnych po parametrze wykazano, że obserwowane formy niestabilności to zmodyfikowane okresowo w kierunku przepływu poprzeczne, symatryczne mody Squire'a i Orra-Sommerfelda, którym odpowiadają czysto urojone wartości własne. Zbadano numerycznie wpływ parametrów odsysania/wypływu na własności tych modów.

The paper presents a study of the flight dynamics of a helicopter with an articulated rotor, carrying a suspended load. The aircraft model includes rigid body dynamics, individual flap and blade dynamics, and inflow dynamics. The load is a point mass with a single suspension point. Results are obtained for load masses of up to 1500 kg, with load-to-helocopter mass rations up to 33%, and cable lengths up to 55m. The presence of the external load modifies the flight dynamics and handling quality characteristics of the helicopter because the dynamic and aerodynamic characteristics of the load may make it unstable in certain fight conditions. Maneuvers of this system in wide flight regimes involves non-linear aerodynamics and inertial coupling. In can be stated that the helicopter with the suspended load is a inherently non-linear and time varying system. Theory of dynamical systems provides a methodology for studying such non-linear systems. Bifurcation theory is a part of that theory. It considers changes in the stability of the system which lead to qualitatively different responses of it. In this paper, results from the theory of dynamical systems are used to predict the nature of instabilities caused by bifurcations and the response of the rotorcraft with the suspended load that follow such bifurcations.
W pracy przedstawiono studium dynamiki lotu śmigłowca z przgubowym wirnikiem nośnym, przenoszącego podwieszony pod kadłubem ładunek. W zastosowanym modelu wiropłata uwzględniono stopnie swobody nieodkształcalnego kadłuba, dynamikę wahań i odchyleń łopat wirnika nośnego oraz dynamikę przepływu przez płaszczyznę wirnika nośnego. Założono, że podwieszony ładunek jest punktem materialnym, na który działają siły aerodynamiczne, podwieszonym w jednym punkcie pod kadłubem śmigłowca. Wyniki obliczeń uzyskano dla podwieszonych ładunków o masie do 1500kg (stosunek masy ładunku do masy śmigłowca do 35%), podwieszonych na linie o długości do 55m. Obecność podwieszonego ładunku modyfikuje charakterystyki dynamiczne i osiągi śmigłowca ze względu na silne sprzężenia aerodynamiczne i bezwładnościowe pomiędzy jego ruchem a ruchami śmigłowca. Ze względu na fakt, że układ śmigłowiec-podwieszony ładunek jest opisany za pomocą silnienieliniowych zwyczajnych równań różniczkowych, zastosowanie klasycznej analizy modalnej układu nie zawsze jest możliwe. Doskonałych narzędzi do badania takich równań dostarcza teoria układów dynamicznych i będąca jej częścią teoria bifurkacji. W pracy wykorzystano metodologię teorii układów dynamicznych do prognozowania natury niestabilności spowodowanej występującymi bifurkacjami. Ponadto przeprowadzono symulacje ruchu układu śmigłowiec-podwieszony ładunek po wystąpieniu bifurkacji.

A stabilization problem of second-order systems by non-linear feedback is considered. We discuss the case when only position feedback is available. The non-linear stabilizer is constructed by placing actuators and sensors in the same location and by using a parallel compensator. The stability of the closed-loop system is proved by LaSalle's theorem. The distinctive feature of the solution is that no transformation to a first-order system is invoked. The results of analytic and numerical computations are included to verify the theoretical analysis and the mathematical formulation.
