Opis:
A direct approach is used to solve some linear-quadratic stochastic control problems for Brownian motion and other noise processes. This direct method does not require solving Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman partial differential equations or backward stochastic differential equations with a stochastic maximum principle or the use of a dynamic programming principle. The appropriate Riccati equation is obtained as part of the optimization problem. The noise processes can be fairly general including the family of fractional Brownian motions.

Opis:
Torsional vibrations induced in drilling systems are detrimental to the condition of the machine and to the effectiveness of the engineering process. The cause of vibrations is a nonlinear and unknown friction between a drill string and the environment, containing jumps in its characteristics. Nonlinear behaviour of the friction coefficient results in self-excited vibration and causes undesirable stick-slip oscillations. The aim of this paper is to present a novel adaptive technique of controlling vibrating systems. The scheme is based on the linear quadratic regulator and uses direct measurements of the friction torque to synthesize its linear dynamic approximation. This approach allows generating a control law that takes into account the impact of the friction on the system dynamics and optimally steers the system to the desired trajectory. The controller’s performance is examined via numerical simulations of the stabilization of the drilling system. The proposed solution outperforms the comparative LQG regulator in terms of the minimization of the assumed cost functional and the overall stability of the control system under the nonlinear disturbance.

The traditional production planning model based upon a deterministic approach is well described in the literature. Due to the uncertain nature of manufacturing processes, such model can however incorrectly represent actual situations on the shop floor. This study develops a mathematical modeling framework for generating production plans in a multistage manufacturing process. The devised model takes into account the stochastic model for predicting the occurrence of faulty products. The aim of the control model is to determine the number of products which should be manufactured in each planning period to minimize both manufacturing costs and potential financial penalties for failing to fulfill the order completely.

Opis:
This paper presents the design and analysis process of state feedback controllers for NPC type 3-level sine wave inverter. In order to achieve good dynamic features in a state feedback control an internal model of reference input and a feedforward path are introduced. During synthesis process of the state feedback controllers maximum permissible dynamics of voltage control in the linear range of modulation is taken into account. It is shown that initially gains of the controller and feedforward path are non-stationary and depend on the angular velocity. Stationary approximation of a non-stationary state feedback controller is presented in details. Proposed state feedback control structures for continuous voltage shaping NPC type 3-level voltage source inverter are examined in FOC PMSM drive. The novelty of the presented controller lays in a stationary approximated state feedback control structure designed in terms of maximum permissible dynamics of a voltage control system. Simulation and experimental results (at the level of 3 kW) of the designed control algorithms are included.

The paper presents a linear-quadratic current controller with damped oscillatory terms designed for three-phase grid-tie voltage source converters used in SMES systems and operated under distorted grid voltage conditions. Special emphasis is placed on a synthesis of an anti-windup mechanism to prevent wind-up derived from the oscillatory terms by the use of a new active damping loop based on a simple moving average method. As a consequence, the current feedback gain may be increased without unwanted overshoot and overruns, and performance of the system can be improved.

Opis:
The presence of backlash in wind turbines is a source of limitations as it introduces nonlinearities that reduce their efficiency in speed/torque control which affect the performance of the power quality. Because of production tolerances during rotation, the teeth contact is lost for a small angle; until it is re-established, it produces a backlash phenomenon. The desire to eliminate this phenomenon is often hard to realise due to the nonlinear dynamic behaviour, which arises with the presence of backlash fault in a system. Therefore, the goal of this study is to develop an LQ optimal control structure in a form of an R-S-T controller in order to reduce the disturbing torque transmitted inside the dead zone of a gearbox in the wind turbine system. The actual system is also developed to be used as a demonstration model at lectures or presentations. The efficacy of the proposed control is illustrated via simulations.

Opis:
The conventional control system is a controller that controls or regulates the dynamics of any other process. From time to time, a conventional control system may not behave appropriately online; this is because of many factors like a variation in the dynamics of the process itself, unexpected changes in the environment, or even undefined parameters of the system model. To overcome this problem, we have designed and implemented an adaptive controller. This paper discusses the design of a controller for a ball and beam system with Genetic Model Reference Adaptive Control (GMRAC) for an adaptive mechanism with the MIT rule. Parameter adjustment (selection) should occur using optimization methods to obtain an optimal performance, so the genetic algorithm (GA) will be used as an optimization method to obtain the optimum values for these parameters. The Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controller will be used as it is one of the most popular controllers. The performance of the proposed controller with the ball and beam system will be carried out with MATLAB Simulink in order to evaluate its effectiveness. The results show satisfactory performance where the position of the ball tracks the desired model reference.

In this paper, the optimal control law is derived for a multi-variable state-space Linear Quadratic Gaussian Predictive Controller (LQGPC). A dynamic performance index is utilized resulting in an optimal steady-state controller. Knowledge of future reference values is incorporated into the controller design and the solution is derived using the method of Lagrange multipliers. It is shown how the well-known GPC controller can be obtained as a special case of the LQGPC controller design. The important advantage of using the LQGPC framework for designing predictive controllers is that, based on stabilizing properties of LQG control, it enables a systematic approach to selection of the design parameters to yield a stable closed-loop system. The system model considered in this paper can be further extended toalso include direct feed-through and knowledge about future external inputs.

We consider a linear-quadratic elliptic optimal control problem with pointwise state constraints. The problem is fully discretized using linear ansatz functions for state and control. Based on a Slater-type argument, we investigate the approximation behavior for mesh size tending to zero. The obtained convergence order for the L²-error of the control and for H 1-error of the state is 1 - ε in the two-dimensional case and 1/2 - ε in three dimensions, provided that the domain satisfies certain regularity assumptions. In a second step, a state-constrained problem with additional control constraints is considered. Here, the control is discretized by constant ansatz functions. It is shown that the convergence theory can be adapted to this case yielding the same order of convergence. The theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical examples.

An optimal control problem for 2d and 3d Stokes equations is investigated with pointwise inequality constraints on the state and the control. The paper is concerned with the full discretization of the control problem allowing for different types of discretization of both the control and the state. For instance, piecewise linear and continuous approximations of the control are included in the present theory. Under certain assumptions on the L∞-error of the finite element discretization of the state, error estimates for the control are derived which can be seen to be optimal since their order of convergence coincides with the one of the interpolation error. The assumptions of the L∞-finite-eleinent-error can be verified for different numerical settings. Finally the results of two numerical experiments are presented.

The optimization problem for fractional discrete-time systems with a quadratic performance index has been formulated and solved. The case of fixed final time and a free final state has been considered. A method for numerical computation of optimization problems has been presented. The presented method is a generalization of the well-known method for discrete-time systems of integer order. The efficiency of the method has been demonstrated on numerical examples and illustrated by graphs. Graphs also show the differences between the fractional and classical (standard) systems theory. Results for other cases of the fractional system order (coefficient ) and not illustrated with numerical examples have been obtained through a computer algorithm written for this purpose.
