Lineage authority
Africa
Opis:
In most simple societies it is possible to find different forms of the political power. Apart from the usual exercise of the power as government of the common matters, inside these groups the politics concerns the socialization of the youths preparing them to their social functions, the confrontation and adaptation of the interests of the group and the communication of the symbols. Outside the groups the politics of the lineage authority defends the integrity of the group and regulates the relationship between different lineages of the neighbourhood. The lineage authority bases on the kinship and the territory. The author presents the dynamic structure of the lineage and different factors having influence on the power of line- age authority. First, it is the kinship and the age hierarchy which cause the continuous change in lineages through the process of segmentation and fusion. Then, it is the territory which constitutes another important element of authority because its property remains in hands of the head of the whole lineage. Next, the author exposes the role of the ancestors as warrants of the political order and in the end he shows that the marriage as a contract between two segments or lineages can be an important means of political influence. The lineage authority disposes of sufficient political instruments to wield power without any coercive means.

Fossil bear material from the lowermost deposits of the Jasna Strzegowska cave is described and its taxonomic status assessed. Comparison with bear remains from other Early and early Middle Pleistocene localities of Eurasia shows the presence of two bear species: Ursus etruscus and U. deningeri, based on morphological and size characters of the teeth and postcranial bones. The teeth of U. deningeri from the Jasna Strzegowska cave are larger, wider and have much more complicated occlusal surfaces when compared with the teeth of U. etruscus. Both bear species are characterized by relatively short and robust metapodials, although those of U. etruscus are on average less massive. Some differences in muscle attachments and articular surfaces have also been found. Metapodials of primitive arctoid bears, that co-occurred with U. etruscus and U. deningeri, are much longer and slimmer. U. etruscus and U. deningeri probably did not live in the Jasna Strzegowska cave at the same time. Based on its time range in Eurasia and morphological characteristics, the age of U. etruscus is estimated as Early Pleistocene, between 1.8-1.3 Ma. This is its first description from Poland, and the remains described are in size and morphology indistinguishable from material from other European localities. For U. deningeri, an early Middle Pleistocene age is suggested.

Opis:
The phenomena of neural differentiation in vitro and neurogenesis in vivo involve a numerous cellular proteins to create the differentiation signaling pathways. The role of the cellular isoform of prion protein PrPc – a product of the PRNP gene, seems also to be connected with a process of neural differentiation. The primary investigations in this field revealed increase of PRNP gene expression during both neurogenesis and neural differentiation in vitro; however, the majority of results were obtained with the use of animal models or cancer- derived cell lines. The latest experiments using neural stem/progenitor cells as an experimental models, seem to confirm the previous results, suggesting participation of PrPc in a neural differentiation. On the basis of the further analyses, PrPc appears to be a part of differentiation signaling pathways. Moreover, PrPc activity may contribute to acquire and maintain the functions specific for neurons. Surprisingly, the prion protein- -deficient cells are still able to differentiate into neurons, although the process of differentiation is delayed. The controversy nevertheless persists about expression of PRNP gene during glial cells differentiation that is reflected in inconsistent published results, beginning with hypothesis postulating the importance of “astrocytic” PrPc for neural differentiation, ending with data presenting no PrPc expression in glial lineage. Studying the literature data does not allow to create the uniform PRNP expression pattern during neural differentiation. It rather seems to be an individual feature, which should be considered in the broader context of particular cell type and the specificity of metabolic processes accompanying neural differentiation in vitro or neurogenesis in vivo.
Różnicowanie neuralne in vitro lub proces neurogenezy in vivo to zjawiska angażujące szereg białek komórkowych, będących ogniwami szlaków sygnalizacyjnych sterujących tymi procesami.

Opis:
In view of the fact that issues related to the family in the literary works of Stanisław Wawrzyniec Staszic are far less known than his socio-political views or his opinions about education, the author of this paper decided to creatively explore this treasure of Polish culture. The results of this study may significantly enhance the educational resources of sub-disciplines of teaching like familial teaching, the history of upbringing, the theory of upbringing and general teaching. Quoting from Stanisław Staszic, the author provides answers to several research issues, namely how Staszic perceived the family and what tasks (and missions) he assigned to family members, the parents and the offspring; the types of primeval families he identified (using the criterion of the law of nature); the role that he assigned to families with respect to the integration of mankind, the integration of a nation, and Poland regaining independence; the factors which, in his opinion, were the main obstacles to families undertaking historical tasks (including Polish families). In order to define these issues, the author of this paper used hermeneutic methods to interpret the literary output of Stanisław Staszic, revealing in the process the philosopher’s views on the family, its tasks, functions and the roles of its members, with special emphasis placed on the mother, father and the offspring. An analysis of the types of families in the initial phases of the existence of mankind was another effort worth making together with considering the obstacles that families encounter when carrying out their historical tasks

W zbiorach Miejsko-Gminnej Biblioteki Publicznej w Głogowie Małopolskim znajduje się rękopis Franciszka Kotuli (1900–1983), znanego rzeszowskiego etnografa i muzealnika, zatytułowany Głogowskie obrazki.
The collection of Municipal Public Library in Glogow Malopolski contains a manuscriptof Franciszek Kotula (1900–1983), a well-known ethnographer and museum worker from Rzeszow, titled “Glogow pictures”. Its first chapter presents the author’s family, which has lived in Glogow Malopolski for several generations. The chapter titled “My lineage and family” has been duly edited before being presented in this article. In the chapter, Franciszek Kotula describes the history of his family both from his father Walenty’s side, but also from the side of his mother, Julia nee Liszcz, whose family had also been living in Glogow Malopolski for many generations. He vividly depicts the people close to him, mainly his father, claiming that he inherited many traits from him, including a flair for collecting and an interest in history. The manuscript was written in the years 1948–1949, but notes added later prove that Franciszek Kotula returned to it often. The document resembles a private memoir and shows close family relations of its author.

Onomastic studies typically state that lineage (the patronymic in particular) was expressed in Ancient Greek through the use of the genitive case. In this study, which is based on an extensive corpus of Roman and Late Antique petitions and contracts, I show that the actual situation was much more complex: up to eight different lineage expressions are attested. In line with recent variationist studies, I take it that variation in language is not random and try to connect the different types of lineage expressions to a number of parameters of variation, that is, diachronic, social, and text-internal factors.

Opis:
Contrary to the views sometimes expressed (for instance, by Jan Stanislaw Bystron), the relationships of Silesia and the Kingdom of Poland were greatly intense, mainly because of the trade of oxen driven from Poland to Brzeg. The wealth of the Polish nobility impressed Silesians, which resulted in the popularity of Polish customs and fashion as well as language. First of all, however, it manifested itself in fabricating snobbishly the real and alleged lineage from the Polish (“Sarmatian”) ancestors by the Silesian nobility. The Polish origin proved “better” nobility since it was older than that which could be held by the descendants of German immigrants who arrived later. On the other hand, the ambitious Polish plebs easily pretended in Silesia to have been “noble-born” representatives of the Polish nobility. These usurpations were difficult to detect due to the lack of the heraldic office in the Kingdom of Poland. The adverse process is also noticeable: Silesian plebs, provided they were affluent, easily became a part of the Polish nobility.
Uzurpacje te były trudne do wykrycia z powodu braku w Rzeczypospolitej urzędowej heroldii. Zauważalny jest też proces odwrotny: śląscy plebeje, byle zamożni, łatwo wchodzili w szeregi polskiej szlachty.

Opis:
One of the key evolutionary events on the scale of the biosphere was an endosymbiosis between a heterotrophic eukaryote and a cyanobacterium, resulting in a primary plastid. Such an organelle is characteristic of three eukaryotic lineages, glaucophytes, red algae and green plants. The three groups are usually united under the common name Archaeplastida or Plantae in modern taxonomic classifications, which indicates they are considered monophyletic. The methods generally used to verify this monophyly are phylogenetic analyses. In this article we review up-to-date results of such analyses and discussed their inconsistencies. Although phylogenies of plastid genes suggest a single primary endosymbiosis, which is assumed to mean a common origin of the Archaeplastida, different phylogenetic trees based on nuclear markers show monophyly, paraphyly, polyphyly or unresolved topologies of Archaeplastida hosts. The difficulties in reconstructing host cell relationships could result from stochastic and systematic biases in data sets, including different substitution rates and patterns, gene paralogy and horizontal/endosymbiotic gene transfer into eukaryotic lineages, which attract Archaeplastida in phylogenetic trees. Based on results to date, it is neither possible to confirm nor refute alternative evolutionary scenarios to a single primary endosymbiosis. Nevertheless, if trees supporting monophyly are considered, relationships inferred among Archaeplastida lineages can be discussed. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear genes clearly show the earlier divergence of glaucophytes from red algae and green plants. Plastid genes suggest a more complicated history, but at least some studies are congruent with this concept. Additional research involving more representatives of glaucophytes and many understudied lineages of Eukaryota can improve inferring phylogenetic relationships related to the Archaeplastida. In addition, alternative approaches not directly dependent on phylogenetic methods should be developed.

The paper focuses on patterns of the evolution of the simplest and longest−ranging (approximately 18 Ma) Silurian graptolite Pristiograptus dubius. The Pristiograptus dubius species group consists of the P. dubius stem lineage represented by a sequence of a number of subspecies displaying only small morphological changes as well as derivative species produced from the stem lineage by means of iterative speciation. This long raging graptolite lineage is the only one, apart of one retiolitid, which survived the most severe environmental event for graptolites, the Cyrtograptus lundgreni Event. Based on three−dimensional, isolated material two P. dubius groups taxa are distinguished. One group has an obtuse angle between the thecal lip and the succeeding thecal wall, the second group has a right or acute angle. Other characters differentiating P. dubius forms are: the shape of the apertural lips, differences in rhabdosome shape and size, and a different number of sicular rings. Sixteen species and subspecies of Pristiograptus from the East European Platform, Poland and Lithuania are discussed. Five new subspecies P. dubius magnus, P. dubius paezerensis, P. dubius praelodenicensis, P. dubius postfrequens, and P. dubius postmagnus are proposed.

Amphidiniopsis is one of the most specious genera of sand-dwelling dinoflagellates. However, its systematic position and the affinities to other genera remain unresolved. We obtained the first SSU rDNA sequences of two species of Amphidiniopsis, A. hirsuta and A. swedmarkii collected from the French coasts of the English Channel. In the corresponding SSU rDNA phylogeny, the sand-dwelling Amphidiniopsis spp., Thecadinium dragescoi, Herdmania litoralis and the planktonic Archaeperidinium (= Protoperidinium) minutum formed a strongly supported clade (100% bootstrap support), with a Scrippsiella-like species occupying a basal position. This clade branched close to families of Peridiniales such as Calciodinellaceae (Scripssiella), Podolampadaceae (Podolampas, Roscoffia), Heterocapsaceae (Heterocapsa) and other peridinioids. The members of the clade of Amphidiniopsis are placed in the family Amphidiniopsidaceae, within the Peridiniales.

The Nomad’s Star is undoubtedly the most prominent poem of Bair Dugarov. Having appeared in the critical time of post-Soviet searching of selfidentification among the Buryats, the poem instantly gained popularity. In this article, I argue that the poem The Nomad’s Star becomes the guiding light for the modern generation of Buryats after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Dugarov calls upon his contemporaries not to forget the nomadic principles of the ancestors. He employs such motifs and artistic images which reproclaim the ideas of lineage continuation, the ancestors’ cult, and harmony in the family – values that are relevant and vital at all times. I close read the poem The Nomad’s Star and outline main cultural concepts depicted in it, such as “route,” “hearth,” “lineage,” and others, which promote the revival of ethnic consciousness in the memory of the Buryats. I support my argumentation with the words of the poet himself and literary critics’ opinions. The public discourse and social network materials devoted to The Nomad’s Star are also called upon, evidencing the poem’s role and significance in contemporary Buryatia.

The article refers to a problem of relationship between authority and genealogy, and to their specific functioning in the Old Serbian literature, that is in other words, in the hagiographical, historiographical, and hymnic texts. In all those works, the combination of the both ideas undoubtedly serves the ideological creation, regarding the image of sovereign together with the exposition of his extra-ordinary lineage and destiny which are tied to his place and role in the space of history, politics, religion, and culture. In the literature, this peculiar relationship is expressed by the two characteristic constructions of dynasty and genealogy. With regard to this representation, the dynastic construction is based on the model of biblical motif concerning Jesse’s stem and functions as the saint osier of the family of Nemanjić. As for the second construction, of genealogy, it reveals itself as a component of the classical myth of historiography that determines the beginnings namely, the Serbian sovereign’s mythical genesis that also concerns all his charismatic, saint family.

The foundation activity of the Princes of the House of Sanguszko in the turn of the 17th and 18th centurypresented in this paper does not depict the whole religious experience and people’s faith who passed away. Among many outstanding personages the greatest were Szymon Samuel Sanguszko and his heirs, especially Paweł Karol Sanguszko, who played an important role in founding churches and convents. Such an expansive foundation activity of the Sanguszkos in their ancestral possessions, especially the borderlands, had its powerbase. The sources of which were, among others, the financial status, the positions held and indeed it was characteristic of the fall of the baroque epoch, according to which one ought to take care of their eternal life by being helpful. This helpfulness boiled down to numerous foundations and philanthropic activity for the deprived. What is more, the founders secured for themselves, often after stormy lives, prayers for their souls in the convents and churches they donated, which also usually became the places of their burials. It is worth emphasizing that many of the Sanguszko family chose religious vocations as priests, monks or nuns. Undoubtedly, it was a manifestation of living faith and deep religious devotion of one of the most important families in the Republic of Poland and Latvia in the 17th and 18th century.

Opis:
The arthropod Oelandocaris oelandica from the upper Middle Cambrian “Orsten” of Sweden was recently recognized as a member of the early phase of crustacean evolution based on additional morphological detail from new specimens. Here we present a detailed investigation of all available material. It includes the description of a 400 μm long specimen probably representing an early developmental stage. Variation in size correlated with variation of trunk−segment numbers allowed recognition of different instars. The largest specimens do not exceed an estimated length of about 1 mm, indicating that our material may consist only of immature specimens. The characteristic, extremely long antennula of O. oelandica branches into three long rods. It may have served as the major structure to sweep in food, aided by the two subsequent appendages. These and the more posterior limbs were also responsible for locomotion. Minute pores on the outer edges of the posterior limbs and on the trunk tergites possibly contained sensilla originally, which may have served as water−current detectors. The presence of a minute proximal endite only on the third head appendage suggests a rather basal position of this species within Crustacea, because comparable developmental stages of other known stem crustaceans have such an endite on more of their appendages. Reconstruction of O. oelandica and its life attitudes (referred to the largest instar known) benefited from the application of 3D modelling. These helped, e.g., in identifying the combination of the plesiomorphic feeding function of the antennulae and the specialisation of the exopods of the next two appendages as a step toward the development of a sweep−net mode of feeding, one of the key novelties in the evolution of Crustacea. Such a mode of feeding coupled with locomotion of the three anterior appendages is still practiced in the naupliar and metanaupliar phases of many extant eucrustaceans, and even some adults.
