Subject and purpose of work: The study aims to explore the role of social capital in the new concept of “effective” cluster, by exploiting not only its human and financial assets but also the social networks with the cluster. Materials and methods: The study presents the case-study findings of the five life-sciences clusters which were conducted in 2018-2019. Additionally, the article discusses the role of social capital and the collaborative efforts within the life sciences clusters during the Covid-19 pandemic. Results: All the analyzed cluster environments have their own social dynamics. Considering the scale and scope of social ties, the Cambridge and Medicon Valley clusters conform with the concept of the "functional clusters", while the Bay Area and Seattle clusters can be classified as “effective clusters”. Conclusions: All the cluster ecosystems have evolved from different origins and they follow different evolutionary paths. Yet, clusters with richer social capital achieve higher collaborative synergy, leading to an increase in knowledge spillovers and innovations. Public policies should focus on the active promotion of social networks and market-oriented intermediaries connecting main cluster partners.

The author presents scientific achievements of two scientific projects conducted by the Student Scientific Circle of Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of Jagiellonian University in cooperation with the Student Scientific Circle of Institute of Public Health Collegium Medicum of Jagiellonian University which he took part in: “PromoAfryka” and “PromoKazachstan”. “PromoAfryka” was the scientific expedition to Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania (the author was responsible for an ethnological part of the research). The participants took part in the 13th World Congress of Public Health in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and conducted field research on the question of the impact of tourism on traditional culture of 12 tribes settled in lower Omo Valley and nutrition habits of the members of the tribes. The project has won several prizes. The “PromoKazachstan” project consisted in field research on Kazakh shamanism. Doubtless, both projects are fine examples of the key role which can be played by ethnology and its methodology in interdisciplinary scientific projects, as a complementary with life sciences approach.

Contemporary employers put numerous competency requirements for the staff candidates. Only those having desirable competencies stand a chance for employment. It turns out that candidates for employees who are graduates of universities have competency gaps, particularly in the field of work organization and time management. The purpose of this article is to determine what exactly the people entering the labor market are not capable of, and how great the scale of the deficiencies in the activities associated with the organization of their own work is. Having this in mind, questionnaire surveys were conducted among the students of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW. On the basis of the surveys results it was concluded that people entering the labor market have a number of deficiencies in work organization skills resulting mainly from the lack of knowledge and the habit of organizing work in time. It was also established that this problem is not marginal, and it concerns a large number of future employees. Therefore, it seems necessary to undertake educational activities that lead to improvement of the observed situation.

The list of 46 self-sowing alien woody plant taxa in Rogów Arboretum is presented, which is an expantion of the list from 1992 when the first article on spontaneous regeneration of alien tree and shrub taxa in the Arboretum was published. Most of species described are rather infrequently found in Polish collections and are known to produce self-seedlings not capable of sexual reproduction, however Abies grandis can be included into group of plants that could produce seedlings capable of sexual reproduction.

In recent years extensive attention has been given to the Rubus genus, but knowledge on the ecology of most of its species, including rhythmic development, is still insuffi cient. Such data may have practical applications, since blackberry species are economically important. The goal of the study was to analyse phenology and growth rate of vegetative and generative stems in 10 Rubus species of different systematic affi nity (belonging to two subspecies and three sections), growing in the Dendrological Garden of the Poznań University of Life Sciences. Some habitat factors were also taken into consideration. Field investigations were carried out for three growing seasons. The plants were evaluated for phenology twice a week, while the length of their stems was measured once a week. Diff erences were observed in the seasonal rhythm of individual species. Weather factors distinctly infl uenced the course of development phases in all the Rubus species. Drought during the growing season caused fl owering disorders, withering of fruit, earlier autumn leaf coloration, and fall of leaves. Rubus idaeus and R. fabrimontanus ripened all of their fruits each year of observations and seemed to be the most adapted for fruit production. Rubus fabrimontanus, R. kuleszae and R. praecox were the most vigorous species with reference to shoot growth. This study revealed that only some species were fully acclimated to the conditions of the Dendrological Garden, since they successfully completed their entire fl owering and fruiting cycles.

The article aims to present the research findings regarding the level of knowledge the students of Warsaw University of Life Sciences and the students of Jadwiga Dziubińska Agricultural Education Centre Schools in Golądkowo have about renewable energy resources. The research shows that the university and secondary school students are most knowledgeable about solar energy and wind power. The students whose field of studies is Renewable Energy Technologies demonstrate more knowledge of geothermal energy, biogas or biomass. Most respondents acquire knowledge about renewable energy resources from the Internet and television while the students of Renewable Energy Technologies acquire their knowledge in the course of their studies. The respondents believe that the production of energy from renewable sources is safe for the environment and human health. But most respondents, including the secondary school and university students, think that biogas is harmful for the environment and human health. Almost three fourth of the respondents are most willing to use solar energy. The second most popular source of energy is wind power. According to the respondents, the advantages of the investments are the protection of the environment and reduction of greenhouse gases emission. A big proportion of the students of Renewable Energy Technologies are for becoming independent of the increasing prices of fossil fuels. The research shows that, in the students’ opinion, wind power and solar energy development is most prospective in Poland. The students of Renewable Energy Technologies believe that there are big opportunities for biomass development in Poland.

Opis:
The types of natural and agricultural science resources contained in the AGRO database have been characterized and their dynamic development in qualitative and quantitative terms in 2009–2016 has been described. In addition, types of database records are presented, with justification for their differentiation by: records containing only a bibliographic description of the article, bibliographic records along with authors’ affiliations, records with, in addition to the aforementioned elements, summaries and attachment bibliographies and records of the highest information value, most frequently searched by database users, in other words records containing full texts of articles. Furthermore, the database recipients and their information and search preferences based on surveys are defined. The use of AGRO in Poland and abroad is considered based on selected statistical data. The AGRO database development plans are discussed depending on the acquisition of funds for its maintenance and quantitative development and the multiplication of records with full texts.

The concept of order, including the spatial order, should be the basis for any actions concerning the development of the space surrounding us that this particular symmetry between nature and the human activity could be preserved and could mark the harmonious compatibility and the correct interdependence of components. While the cultural heritage as an important element of national heritage, is fairly well protected (durability of the legal solutions, the stabilized structures of public administration, social awareness) is the landscape, especially the rural landscape, it is not properly protected and treated with care, and one of the reasons for this is a crisis situation in terms of spatial planning. Institute of Landscape Architecture at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences (IAK) participates in activities in support of rural leaders since 2001, when it was initiated cooperation with the Office of the Marshal of the Opole Province. Since 2004, there were works began in the Lower Silesia region in cooperation first with municipalities and the local action groups, and afterwards in cooperation with the Marshal Office of Lower Silesia. The employees of IAK has begun since that time training for the rural leaders, moderators, and local authorities, realizing topics related to the cultural heritage and landscape conservation of the village. They were conducted in both provinces, as well as in Silesia, Lublin and Great Poland voivodeship.

The aim of this paper was to present the preferences of apple consumers (students) concerned on the functional and sensory apples’ quality features: the apple cultivar and taste, skin colour, fruit size and fruit firmness. The survey data were collected in the years 2009 and 2011 among 265 and 208 students of the Poznan University of Life Sciences. The respondents completed the survey questionnaires in presence of the researcher. The respondents could choose no more than three of the listed apple cultivars. Further- more the respondents could choose one answer from each list of the preferable apples quality features (taste, skin colour, fruit size and firmness of flesh). The most preferred apple cultivars were: Lobo, Jonagold, Szampion, Golden Delicious and Cortland. The percentage of students whose did not know the name of the apple cultivar they consumed was high and it amounted to 17% in 2009 and 24% in 2011. Students preferred sweet-winy taste of apples, the red colour of fruit skin, with blush, the fruits of medium size and tough. The colour of apple skin was the least important quality feature - it did not matter for more than 1/3 of respondents, mainly males. The differences between males and females students appeared in taste of apple fruits and firmness of flesh. The sour taste of apples was preferred by relatively more males than females and for bigger percentage of males the taste of fruits was not important. More females preferred sweet and very sweet apples and tough.
Celem pracy było przedstawienie preferencji konsumentów jabłek (studentów) w zakresie funkcjonalnych oraz sensorycznych cech jakościowych jabłek, takich jak: odmiana oraz smak, kolor skórki, wielkość owocu i twardość miąższu. Podstawą analizy były wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych wśród studentów Uniwersytetu Przyrodniczego w Poznaniu w dwóch okresach: w 2009 roku (265 ankiet) oraz w 2011 roku (208 ankiet). Respondenci wypełniali ankietę w obecności osoby przeprowadzającej badanie. Studenci mogli wybrać maksymalnie trzy spośród wymienionych odmian jabłek lub jedną z odpowiedzi: „Nie wiem”, „Nie ma znaczenia”, „Nie jadam jabłek”, „Inne” i wpisać swoją propozycję. Ponadto respondenci mogli wybrać jedną odpowiedź z każdej listy dotyczącej preferencji w zakresie cech jakościowych jabłek (smaku, koloru skórki, wielkości owocu i twardości miąższu). Ulubionymi odmianami jabłek były: Lobo, Jona-gold, Szampion, Golden Delicious i Cortland. Odsetek studentów, którzy nie znali nazwy ulubionych odmian jabłek był wysoki i wynosił 17% w 2009 roku oraz 24% w 2011 roku. Większość studentów preferowała słodko-winny smak jabłek, owoce koloru czerwonego, z rumieńcem, średniej wielkości oraz twarde. Cechą, która nie miała znaczenia dla relatywnie największego odsetka ankietowanych (ponad 1/3 ankietowanych), był kolor skórki. Różnice w preferencjach pomiędzy mężczyznami a kobietami pojawiły się w przypadku smaku jabłek oraz twardości miąższu. Kwaśny smak jabłek preferowało relatywnie więcej badanych mężczyzn, a dla większości z nich smak nie miał znaczenia. Więcej kobiet lubiło jabłka słodkie, bardzo słodkie oraz twarde.
