Opis:
We investigated the relationship between borderline symptoms in women and their partner’s desire to continue the relationship and relationship commitment in an aversive living environment using an experimental design. We aimed to highlight the adaptive mechanisms of borderline symptoms, which may materialize in reproductive advantages for women in aversive contexts. We conducted two experiments to test the same hypotheses. In Study 1, online participants were assigned to the experimental group (N = 123). The experimental scenario hypothesized having a relationship with a woman high in borderline characteristics, during an aversive life environment. The control group (N = 118) hypothesized having a relationship with a woman high in borderline characteristics, during normal living conditions. We repeated the same experimental manipulation using a within-subjects design in Study 2 (N = 171). Environmental conditions influenced the desire to end the relationship with women characterized by borderline symptoms; men had a lower desire to end the relationship with their partner in aversive life events than in normal living conditions. Thus, women’s borderline behavioral characteristics may bring mating benefits in aversive living environments.

Opis:
Jędrzej Śniadecki (1768–1838) remains one of most eminent scholars of his times. Remembered as a founder of modern chemistry in Poland, one of early pioneers in anthropology and social sciences, and author of the two volume book Theory of organic being (Teoria jestestw organicznych), in which the modern metabolic concept of life processes can be considered as grounded; he was also a highly educated and gifted physician. This paper aims to show the importance of medicine in Śniadecki’s theory of life, in its physiological and pathological manifestations in regard to the clinical model and the medical practice which he followed. It deals with the concept of illness as described in Śniadecki’s writings, focusing on the role of irritation and organic reaction as the major components of his proposed pathological model. The dynamic and variable conditions of diseases are explained by means of metabolic changes, which was a truly pioneering concept, already described in Śniadecki’s earlier theoretical works on the subject of life and nature. The paper discusses the problem of influence in terms of the leading medical doctrines at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, namely those of John Brown (1735–1788) and François Broussais (1772–1838), on Śniadecki as a researcher and practitioner. For practical (clinical) medicine his reserve towards auscultation and percussion, then a slowly gaining field in clinical subjects, is clearly present in Śniadecki’s writings and teaching. His passive and, as far as we can tell, sceptical attitude is explained by the lack of convincing evidence, based on empirical and experimental data, which would enable to connect the physical signs of a diagnosis fulfilled by means of stethoscope to that of the percussion process. It must be remembered that the books by Adam Raciborski (1809–1871) and Joseph Škoda (1805–1881) were both published in the 1830s, where modern diagnosing methods were established using a suitable scientific background to explain their importance. This was too late to influence the clinical work of Śniadecki. The same scepticism, with an obvious demand for strict and experimentally derived data, is probably responsible for the conservative therapy present in Śniadecki’s teaching.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie zjawiska przestępczości gwałtownej z perspektywy teorii historii życia. Podejście to wywodzi się z biologii ewolucyjnej coraz częściej wykorzystywanym na gruncie psychologii. Ostatnio zauważyć można wzrost zainteresowania wyjaśnieniami przestępczości nawiązującymi do ekologii i psychologii ewolucyjnej. Opracowanie ma charakter przeglądowy i zwraca uwagę na możliwości analizy zjawiska przestępczości w kontekście teorii historii życia.
The aim of the present article is to show the violent crime phenomenon from a life history theory perspective, which is drawn on evolutionary biology but more and more often is being employed in the area of psychology. In recent years there has been increasing interest in the explanations of criminality, which are linked with ecology and evolutionary psychology. This is a review article which draws attention to the possibilities to analyze causes of crime in the context of life history theory.

Opis:
The evolutionary function of love is to create a strong bond between the partners with reproduction in view. In order to achieve this goal, humans use various sexual/reproductive strategies, which have evolved due to specific reproductive benefits. The use of particular strategies depends on many factors but one of the most important is early childhood experiences, on which life history theory (LHT) focuses. John Lee (1973) identified 6 basic love styles: eros, ludus, storge, pragma, agape, and mania. Our goal was to check whether love styles may be treated as sexual/reproductive strategies in the context of LHT – slow or fast strategy. In our study (N = 177) we found that people who prefer the slow reproductive strategy are inclined to show passionate, pragmatic and friendly love, and those who prefer the fast strategy, treated love as a game. A low level of environmental stress in childhood results in preferring eros, storge and agape love styles, belonging to the slow strategy, and a high one results in preferring ludus, which belongs to the fast strategy. People representing eros, storge or pragma styles have restricted sociosexual orientation so they prefer long-term relationships, whereas those with the ludus style are people with unrestricted orientation, preferring short-term relationships. Besides, storge, agape and pragma seem to determine preferring qualities connected with parental effort in one’s partner, mania – with mating effort, and eros – with both kinds of effort. No correlation was found between the love style and the number of children.

Opis:
Purpose: Establishing the way the life history (LH) strategies and gratitude are related to each other. Design/methodology/approach: Life History Theory provides an evolutionary framework for understanding specific developmental paths of species and individuals. There are certain trade-offs during a lifespan of an individual, they must face (for instance, somatic or reproductive effort, quality or quantity of offspring, mating or parenting). Depending on the choices a person makes, they exhibit a slow or a fast life history (LH) strategy. A latent variable underlying a set of solutions (strategy) is called K-Factor and is used to measure individual differences with regard to the pace of one’s LH. People with a slow LH exhibit greater prosociality, tend to form long-term sexual relationships and their sexual maturation is slowed down. On the other hand, gratitude facilitates prosociality and altruism, builds social resources and acts as a moral barometer. In recent years we observe an increasing attention to the issue of gratitude both in academic publications and popular press in various fields including economics, management and organizational sciences. All these disciplines draw from relatively new and contemporarily flourishing field of psychology - positive psychology. We deployed the Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6) for the measurement of gratitude and the Mini-K Short Form for the measurement of LH strategies. 197 students took part in the study (138 females, 59 males). Findings: A positive correlation between slow LH strategy and gratitude was found in women. Originality/value: Investigations on the relationship between gratitude and LH strategies show a fragment of the landscape of human personality. Slow LH people seem to be more grateful and thus display more prosocial traits while restraining selfishness which can lead to achieving the delayed social benefits. On the other hand, low-K individuals in organizational context have smaller willingness/ability to reciprocate to their benefactors and to build social bonds. Such individuals presenting exploitative interpersonal style should be detected at the beginning of a selection process by HR specialists.

Opis:
Life history is a term usually assigned in the history of historiography to the Italian school of microhistory. In fact, it is a concept typical for the natural sciences in the case of which it is a framework focused on studies of life history strategies as well as life cycles. Life history analysis has become the subject of numerous studies around the world and has been gaining in popularity in social sciences. The author presents life history as a certain research perspective for historical studies which is capable of incorporating both natural and cultural approaches. He draws inspirations of the life history perspective from recent research into history of modern Poland.
