Opis:
Background. Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a lesion that can affect several spinal structures, including the vertebrae, spinal cord, ligaments, and other adjacent parts of the spine. Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) can cause functional changes in patients of different ages. Material and methods. The study aims to determine whether there are social, clinical, and radiological differences between young, middle-aged, and elderly adults with SCI caused by a ground-level fall. This retrospective study analyzed the records of patients with a clinical diagnosis of SCI. It enrolled patients with traumatic spinal cord injury after a ground-level fall divided as follows: young aged adults 18–35 years of age (G1); middle-aged adults aged 36–60 years (G2); and elderly adults aged over 60 years (G3). Their clinical, social, and radiological variables were analyzed. Results. It is observed that low schooling level, being widowed, and being a homemaker were more frequently encountered among elderly adults, whereas being single was more common in middle-aged adults. The morphologic diagnosis of compression fracture and the associated injury of facial trauma occurred more frequently in elderly adults, with an increasing tendency with age. Conservative therapeutic management was most commonly encountered in elderly adults, compared to surgery from a posterior approach in middle-aged adults. Listhesis was better identified in middle-aged adults by computed tomography (CT). Spinal cord contusion and injury to the C1 vertebra were demonstrated in young adults by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Conclusions. 1. Elderly adults with low education level, widowed, and homemakers were more susceptible to SCI caused by a fall. 2. Single marital status was more frequently noted in young adults. 3. The most frequent clinical aspects were the morphological aspect of compression fracture and facial trauma as an associated injury in elderly adults, with the occurrence of facial trauma increasing with age. 4. Conservative therapeutic management was more common in elderly adults than surgery from a posterior approach in middle-aged adults. 5. Regarding the radiological aspects of CT, listhesis was better identified in middle-aged adults. Spinal cord contusions and C1 vertebra lesions were better identified in young adults by MRI.

Opis:
The life cycle cost (LCC) methodology provides understanding of economic aspects of urban buses equipped with different types of propulsion. The LCC analysis delivers the sum of costs related to the acquisition, operation, repair and maintenance disposal as well as the costs for the each bus power train technology. The method allows to take into account all costs for the whole vehicle’s life cycle and creates a precondition for precise information database for decision making. In addition to the economic factors LCC can be extended to environmental aspects such as greenhouse gases emissions. The environmental impacts of the vehicle lifetime may be presented in monetary values. The paper presents the Life Cycle Cost analysis undertaken for urban buses fitted with conventional, series hybrid and parallel hybrid drives. Provided LCC analysis includes the economic and environmental aspects. The paper also delivers the evaluation of the total air pollutant emissions for all stages of lifetime of the each analysed urban bus. The results show that the hybrids have slightly lower life cycle cost than conventional bus. Moreover, hybrid buses were found to have lower life cycle environmental impacts.

Opis:
The objective of the paper is demonstration of the role of multi scale modelling in the system, which optimizes the whole production chain. Product exploitation and properties are the key parameters for formulation of the objective function in the optimization problem. Such parameters as fatigue resistance, wear resistance or thermal resistance are crucial for extending the life cycle of products, therefore, theoretical prediction of those parameters is inevitable for the optimization of the manufacturing system. Thus, the main focus in the paper is on description of the idea of multi scale modelling and on presentation of the multi scale model developed by the Authors. This model combines finite element (FE) solution of the macro scale problem with the cellular automata (CA) model of the micro scale phenomena. Simulation of the production chain is the second part of the paper. The chain under consideration is composed of stock heating, cold forging, machining and simulation of exploitation conditions. The correlation between the process parameters and the exploitation properties of the product is demonstrated. Finally, the optimization problem which would be the base of intelligent manufacturing, is formulated.

A review of the available literature concerning environmental impact assessment for industrial symbiosis has been carried out. The authors have recommended the use of life cycle assessment method for this purpose. It was stated that so far few studies presenting LCA results of industrial symbiosis have been published. Among the factors which contribute to the success of symbiotic exchange, the close location of collaborating companies has been often mentioned. This paper presents LCA results concerning the environmental impact of symbiotic gypsum transmission. Concepts of relative distance and critical distance for the case of industrial symbiosis were proposed and defined. Significant difference between critical distance obtained for particular endpoints were observed (3.5- 564 km). Application of Life Cycle Sustainability Triangle enabled the estimation of critical distance taking into account various impact categories. A sensitivity analysis indicated the relationship between critical distance and the means of transport which reflected the effect of scale. The critical distance determined for heavy trucks was 3.2 - 3.9 times longer than in case of lighter vehicles.

The article presents four perspectives on the family. In the intergenerational perspective a family is an institution of biological and cultural reproduction. Family in the perspective of the life cycle is a dynamically changing structure of “problems to solve” associated with life cycle: socialization, mating, parenting and post reproductive phase. Each phase substantially changes the structure of interests, available resources and the nature of social relationships. Family in the system of social stratification is associated with the distribution of scarce resources. The family as a system of social interaction is a complex dynamic unit which stabilizes the basic structure of the moral code (attitudes of loyalty and trust).

The aim of the study was to determine the environmental potential impact of the palm shell biofuel production process using life cycle assessment (LCA) through gate to gate approach. The environmental impact of each scenario was assessed using ISO 14040 (2006), which includes goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory (LCI), life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) and interpretation. The simapro v.9 software with ecoinvent 3.5 database was utilized to assess the environmental effect. The impact analysis method used is Impact 2002+. Functional units were used to show environmental references in damage assessment and characterization, such as energy use and global warming potential. The results show that the environmental impact evaluation obtained through LCA for the entire biofuel production process stated that the thermal cracking stage resulted in the highest global warming impact, compared to other processes, which was 118.374 kg CO2 eq. For the categories of human health, ecosystem quality, and climate change, each has a value of 0.0001 DALY; 15.708 PDF•m2•yr; and 335.233 kg CO2 eq where this value is the total damage assessment of the entire biofuel production process. From the results of the analysis by utilizing the networking graph on the simapro application, it can be seen that the environmental hotspot of the thermal cracking process of biofuel production is due to the use of electricity from the State Electricity Company (PLN) and the release of chemical substances from the process. To improve the environmental performance of biofuel production process, additional development steps are required to increase biofuel yield, purification efficiency of biofuel to obtain pure liquid fuel, and the use of renewable energy sources to generate electricity. Additionally, more particular data would be required for a more precise LCA study result.

This paper presents a case study showing use of LCC calculations to assess changes of maintenance strategy for a CNC machining centre. It was proven that replacing reactive maintenance tasks with simple condition monitoring and preventive activities results in lower whole life cycle cost of the analysed machining centre.

To assess the impact of not just the battery as such but its multi-element composition on the state of the environment, a new approach is proposed through the determination of the reliability of ecosystems, which makes it possible to obtain quantitative indexes of the stability and losses of natural ecosystems. These data can be used as indicators of the state of the environment, and hence as the assessment of an environmental component that is important for determining the actual impact of the multi-element composition of batteries. On the basis of such indicators, which can be obtained using the SimaPro software, it is possible to calculate thresholds beyond which negative phenomena occur, as well as to predict and simulate situations, to carry out the mapping of sources of risks, to monitor changes, and this will allow identifying the causes of these changes or determining the factors that slow down or retard the approach of ecosystems to a critical state, i.e. to develop preventive measures to avoid disasters. The eco-indicator 99 is one of the methods that allows us to accept one estimate for the whole product - the so-called ecological index. It is the sum of all individual eco-points or partial indexes for all life-cycle processes. The computational procedure is carried out by summing up the results of weighing the phases of the life cycle.

International statistics show that small firms are the dominant form of business enterprise today. Yet, despite ongoing research into the theory of the firm, there is still no common view on the mechanisms of firm growth. This article aims to stimulate further theoretical and empirical research into firm growth. In the first part of the paper, the author reviews the most seminal theories of the growth of the firm to date, noting that there are two broadly perceived schools of thought within the analysed field. The first approach advocates a more or less stochastic pattern of firm growth. The second research school holds that the resources at the firm’s disposal are the differentiators, drivers of, but also limits to, firm growth. In the second part of the paper, based on the literature review and deduction, the author develops an alternative model of firm growth. Building on the properties of the Markovian processes, he shows that it may be because of the seemingly rational behaviour of firm incumbents that most firms do not grow in size beyond some satisfying level. The proposed model of firm growth is equally applicable to firms of all sizes operating in all industries and markets.

Power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels are a promising technology and alternative to biofuels and conventional fuels. In this work, the environmental impact of PtL was investigated using life cycle assessment (LCA) in order to see how the energy source used in producing the PtL affects the environmental impacts of the fuel. The electrolysis cell used was solid oxide electrolysis cell, and the pathway of CO2 provision was biomass power plant. Four scenarios of energy sources were compared; the first scenario involved the electricity from German grid and heat from chemical industry, the second one was the electricity from Saudi Arabia grid and heat from chemical industry, the third one concerned the electricity from wind turbine and heat from evacuated tube collector, and the fourth scenario was the electricity from photovoltaic and heat from evacuated tube collector. The result of the life cycle assessment showed that the PtL fuels have environmental benefits over the fossil reference only in the third and fourth scenarios where renewable electricity was used.

Opis:
The subject of this publication is to determine the impact of biogas plants on the environment, with particular emphasis on greenhouse gasses emissions associated with the production and management of biogas as the main plant product. The environmental impact of the agricultural sector as well as the state of development of the biogas market in European Union are presented as background for consideration of greenhouse gas emissions. One of the economy sectors responsible for GHG emissions is agriculture. One of the solutions of GHG reduction in agriculture is slurry management using biogas technology. It should be emphasized, that biogas not always has favorable emission parameters. The final emission throughout the whole life cycle of this energy carrier depends on many factors. The structure of GHG emissions largely depends on what type of raw material it used for biogas production and in what kind of tanks the digestate sludge is stored. If waste raw materials are used for biogas production, then GHG emission associated with their acquisition is assumed to be zero. On the other hand, if dedicated energy crops are used for biogas production, the emission connected with cultivation of these plants are added to the total GHG emissions. They are directly related to the use of fertilizers and plant protection products, field emissions of nitrous oxide and fuel combustion during the operation of agricultural machinery. Influence on the GHG emission has also the kind id digestate storage tank. If these are closed tanks, there is no emissions to the atmosphere. If tank is open, then methane is emitted directly to the air and is included in the total GHG balance.

Vagabonds in the society of the Polish Nobles’ Commonwealth in the context of studies on life cycles (Summary)The purpose of the article is to present a new interpretation of the role played by vagabonds in the society of the Polish Nobles’ Commonwealth divided into estates. The proposed approach on the one hand bases on studies concerning the functioning of socially marginalized people in early modern France and Poland, with which Western historiographers are acquainted, and on the other on a new analysis of Polish source materials mainly relating to the times of Stanisław August Poniatowski. The article is divided into four parts, the first of which presents the output of Polish historiography on the topic of vagabonds. The results of studies describing groups similar to people who were not classified as belonging to any estate and had no permanent home (vagabonds) in Western societies are presented in the second part. The last section contains new findings which undermine some of the universal opinions of Polish historiographers. The last part presents conclusions which indicate greater social mobility than had been previously assumed and the significance of vagabonds in the functioning of the labour market.

This article provides an overview of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method which supports manufacturers’ environmental information needs by evaluation of the environmental aspects and potential influences throughout the lifetime of the product. In the article results are presented of the first phase of the life cycle assessment of metallised textiles and the context for the analysis is a new project: „Metallisation of Textiles to make Urban living for Older people more Independent & Fashionable – MATUROLIFE”, implemented under the HORIZON 2020 Programme – “Advanced materials & innovative design for improved functionality & aesthetics in high added value consumer goods”.The article presents the most important assumptions for assessing the environmental effects associated with the metallization of various textiles, including primarily electroless copper coating, by calculating the demand for materials and energy, and taking into account emissions to air, water and soil, and by assessing their impact on the environment. The use of LCA as a management tool with great potential for making decisions within strategic business planning was analyzed.

Opis:
Research background: Payout policy has attracted a great deal of research, how-ever it still has not been satisfactorily explained why corporations repurchase their shares. The most popular explanation for share repurchases is their signaling power. An alternative explanation for share repurchases is related to free cash flow. We assume that both theories are not competitive, due to the fact that the motives for share repurchases may differ depending on the firm’s life cycle stage. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to test the hypotheses that companies in growth stage are more prone to repurchase their shares due to the their undervaluation. Methods: Our analysis focuses on 116 repurchase on WSE and 47 repurchase on NewCon-nect in Poland during the period 2004–2016 to test the hypothesis. We assume that companies listed on WSE are in their mature stage while listed on NewConnect are in the growth stage. We use market value to book the value ratio (M/BV) and the relation of M/BV ratio for the repurchasing company to the M/BV ratio for the whole market at the date of implementing share repurchase program as a proxies for firm valuation. Findings & Value added: Our study does not confirm that repurchased companies at a growth stage are more undervalued than repurchased companies at a mature stage (at statistically significant level), however there are more repurchased companies at a growth stage with lower M/BV value than repurchase companies in mature stage. Adding corporate life cycle theory into the study, our result can contribute to the literature by more distinctly understanding the motivation of share repurchases. The results might be helpful for companies to determine their financial policies and for investors to determine their investment decisions.

Post-harvest handling / processing of fishery commodities requires large amounts of water and energy to overcome their perishable properties. Water is needed as raw/auxiliary material and to ensure that the production process and its environment meet the sanitary and hygiene principles. Meanwhile, large amount of energy is required for the transportation of raw materials and products, cold chain system during the process and operations of processing machines. They contribute towards the environmental impact of fish processing. This study used life cycle assessment to estimate the potential environmental impact of small scale mackerel fish processing. The results showed that the fish processing has contributed to 0.079 kg SO2 eq acidification potential, 9.66 kg CO2 eq climate changGWP 100, 0.02 kg PO4 eq Eutrophication-generic, 0.17 kg 1.4 DCB eq human toxicity-HTP inf, and 0.0015 kg ethylene eq photochemical oxidation-high NOx. Wastewater treatment implementation simulation showed elimination of direct emissions that contribute to eutrophication and increasing the potential of other process associated with energy consumption.

Opis:
Mature gas fields are subject to network backpressure fluctuation causing liquid loading condition. The liquid loading, theoretically, occurs when the gas velocity is below its critical velocity which commonly happens in mature fields when rates become “low”. Based on Turner or Coleman’s equations, the critical velocity is proportional to the wellhead flowing pressure. This means, when the wellhead pressure increases as the result of higher external (sales) pressure, then the critical velocity will be higher. This condition will give a “pseudo” production decline of the wells. Gas compression is among the best fit-for-purpose solution to overcome the above challenges. Gas compression will help to reduce the wellhead flowing pressure which increases the gas velocity above the critical velocity as well as the well gas rate by lowering the bottomhole flowing pressure. The wells will be capable of unloading the liquid inside the wellbore and the reservoir will suffer a higher pressure drawdown. Moreover, the wells will not be impacted by the external pressure fluctuation as long as this latter is below the compressor discharge pressure. Gas compression has been implemented in Laslau Mare mature gas field to extend the production life cycle. 5 wellhead compressors have been installed since 2010 and 1 group compressor since 2014. Both types of compressor show positive results. This paper explains the application of compressor in Laslau Mare field starting with candidate selection up to cash flow analysis. A big emphasis will be given to the compressor/ well performance.
