Not everyone will succeed, however, and not everyone is happy with her life. So what determines our life satisfaction, which predisposes us to seek to improve their lives, what determines our level of subjective satisfaction? The answers to these questions are trying to find peace of life satisfaction abstinent addicts, which may be on one side of a subjective construct, on the other hand, the starting point for assessing the broader concept of quality of their lives.

Climate change has become a popular topic with a strong presence in media, political, scientific and ethical debates. This raises a question as to why we are not acting in accordance with our knowledge and are unable to do enough to protect our future. The paper argues that the problem partly arises from a lack of philosophical reflection about relations between different aspects of our personalities. Those different aspects are presented based on the reflections of Thomas Nagel on good, moral, and rational ways of life. I claim that all three need to be taken into consideration in order to answer challenge raised by the environmental dangers we are facing.

Biology is the most extensive field in the Corpus Aristotelicum. In his fundamental work De anima, Aristotle tries to fix the borders of this life science. The term ψυχή has a twofold explanatory status. On the one hand, ψυχή is understood as a principle of all living beings. On the other hand, it is understood as a cause of the fact that all living beings are alive. The paper is divided into three sections. (1) The first part shows why Aristotle discusses these issues in a work entitled Περὶ ψυχῆς. Since Pythagoras and Heraclitus, ψυχή was understood as a life principle: Pythagoras believed that men, animals and plants share the same nature: they are all ἔμψυχα and they are homogenous qua ψυχή. (2) The second part of this article deals with Aristotle’s definition of the soul in DA II: ψυχή is the principle of all living things. This establishes (i) the external criteria to divide living and non-living beings and (ii) the internal criteria to divide living beings. (3) The third part of this paper is concerned with the methodological consequences of this definition: the life functions (δυνάμεις τῆς ψυχῆς) are the central explanandum in Aristotle’s biology. De anima II defines such various life-functions as nourishment, sense-perception and locomotion. These capacities contour the main fields of the philosopher’s biological investigation. For Aristotle, the faculty of reproduction is a subtype of nourishment. Reproduction is the most important and most natural function of all living beings. Genetics is, therefore, the most important field in Aristotle’s biology.

Opis:
Climate changes, resulting in occurrence of extreme natural phenomena that do not bypass our country and continent, are the background of the research. In Poland, the areas most endangered with floods are located in the southern part of the country. The subject of author’s research is flood hazard and its effect on the strength of social bonds and community actions undertaken by rural inhabitants (communes Gnojnik, Skarbimierz, and Sławatycze). These are the inhabitants living within the flooded areas, both people directly affected by the flood and also their neighbors who provided help. In the examined period (2008–2011), the selected communes experienced floods at least twice, with the assumption that not all the respondents were affected by it. The main research method used in the study was systematic comparison. Despite of the existing flood hazard, the respondents feel secure in their place of residence and do not wish to relocate; they are deeply bounded with it, first of all because of their families and close friends who also live there; They appreciate people whom they can trust. The majority of the respondents from all communes declared their positive attitude towards strangers. The respondents from the examined communes exhibited particularly large trust towards their commune leaders.
Szczególnie dużym zaufaniem, we wszystkich badanych gminach, respondenci darzą swoich sołtysów.

Although dying as the last act of life constitutes part of our earthly existence, death is difficult to accept. Faced with death an individual has always started asking questions about the meaningfulness of his/ her life and life after death. In the contemporary western culture characterized among others by the collapse of the social structures, people very rarely die surrounded by their families as they used to do, but in hospitals, i.e. in isolation, suffering from loneliness, connected to a range of technologically advanced medical devices. Socio-cultural changes have brought about a conviction that death ends human existence. Catholic faith, however, offers hope that death provides access to desirable future events. As a pass-through state death is the end and the beginning, since after death life is transformed. Consequently, we die trustfully hoping to be rewarded with eternal life.

It is known that each EU Member State is obliged to achieve the common goals. Hence, this work undertakes to assess the degree to which the EU LLL goals have been accomplished in Poland. This work presents: the essence of LLL, the educational goals set out in the two abovementioned strategies, and the EU recommendations for Poland in this field. Selected indicators were used to determine the level of educational achievements in the country. The following research methodologies were applied for the purpose of this paper: desk research, indicator-based research and deductive research.

Interest in “quality of life” issues originated in the 1950s. The concept found applications in fields such as economics, social policy, medicine, sociology and psychology. Quality of life could perhaps also be an object of study for security sciences as well. Despite the continued popularity of this category, social scientists are yet to develop a commonly agreed upon definition of the concept. This paper constitutes an attempt at answering the question of whether the need for security is related to quality of life and whether it is valid to introduce a new conceptual category in the form of quality of life security. If so, then it is necessary to determine whether it is a measure that is subjective or objective. Human needs such as security and quality of life are what motivates human actions and activity. If one of the above needs is not being met, the individual become destabilised. The homogenisation and standardisation of scientific concepts would render it possible to compare data from an interdisciplinary point of view.

Ponadto w wypowiedziach osób badanych można wyróżnić trzy podstawowe formalne składniki duchowości: poznawczy, emocjonalny i behawioralny.
Delimitation of spirituality phenomenon is very difficult task. Young history of researching this phenomena shows the spirituality as not only seeking for sacred, not only religion or beliefs, but much more complicated construct. The body of many research from different fields of psychology shows different points of view and perspectives in which spirituality may be investigated. There are three visible approaches which treat spirituality as: 1) life attitude, 2) dimension of personality and 3) cognitive schema. The first of above standpoint/hypothesis was tested. Objectives (N = 200) were young people, students of the universities and academies of different interests: humanistic, exact science and artistic. They were asked what the spirituality generally is (broad social/cultural meaning), especially for them (personal meaning) and what spiritual strivings are. The results showed very differentiated understanding of spirituality depending on particular interests and the three formal components of it: cognitive, emotional and behavioral one.

The Catholic religion has been inextricably connected with the Polish state through numerous historical experiences. The aim of the research (N=238) is to check whether religiosity affects the perception of the importance of religious principles in everyday life and religion in political life. In the presented approach, religiosity was a multidimensional variable and was conceptualized using a modified five-point Religiosity Centrality Scale (Huber 2003). It was confirmed that all dimensions of religiosity are significantly related to the assessment of the importance of religious principles. The dimension that showed the strongest correlation with the created variables was the dimension of religious cult, and the dimension that correlated the least was the dimension of reading the Catholic press.

The article is a review paper on the issue of life satisfaction in seniors. Nowadays, it is very difficult for the elderly to achieve an optimum level of life satisfaction due to the changing reality and their difficulty adapting to it, changes in their functioning resulting from the aging process, abandonment by their families, poor social and living conditions or lack of proper medical care. These factors inspire reflection on the actual state of the sense of life satisfaction in seniors. The aim of the article is to explain the concept of life satisfaction, describe the notions related to it along with similarities and differences in meaning between them, investigate and interpret contemporary theories of life satisfaction, and show the diversity of methodological approaches and relationality in conducting research on life satisfaction in seniors. The idea is also to highlight the importance of research on life satisfaction in elderly people and to develop a senior citizen policy. Opis:
John Paul II could be rightly called the ‘Admirer of life’. His deep faith, along with the existential reasons, the sources of which could be traced back to his traumatic experiences during the Second World War, moulded him into a strong defender of human life. The Pope teaches that a civilization’s worth is determined by its attitude towards human life; it is either the civilization of life, or the destructive civilization of death. Since body constitutes an integral part of the whole human person, its dignity is enhanced. In his ‘theology of the body’ John Paul II stressed not only the sharing of the body in the dignity of the person, but also its importance as a sign and a needle in the compass of the human intellect in its search for moral norms. The Polish Pope insisted on the value of human life from its inception to natural death, and often presented various ruling elites with a challenge: Life is sacrosanct and this truth must be reflected in legislation. Human life is, according to John Paul II, the penultimate things; life is limited, mortal. The value of human life is determined by its destination: the human being is to find his fulfillment in eternity, where he will have a share in the everlasting life. Thirty years after the elevation of Karol Wojtyla to the Holy See we may confidently give him the credit for influencing the change in sensitivity to human life on a truly global scale. Though the contrary tendencies are very strong, thanks to the Polish Pope the impact of the culture of death has been significantly restricted.

Opis:
In recent years in demography there has been a growing discussion about the relationship between life expectancy and lifespan inequality. It appears that in the long run this relationship tends to be strongly linear – countries with the longest life expectancy are also the most equal. This article takes a closer look at countries that went through long periods of life expectancy stagnation and shows that during those times they also experienced a reduction in inequality, mainly due to a large decrease in infant mortality. However, if only adult mortality is taken into account inequality was stagnating or even rising in many cases. Particularly interesting is the fact that a similar pattern of the relationship between life expectancy and lifespan inequality was observed both in Eastern or Western Europe.

Incredible advances in medical treatment and technology caused a decrease in newborn mortality as well as increase in survival of infants with serious functional and structural deficiencies. This situation creates numerous medico-legal and ethical dilemmas strictly associated with value of life with serious dysfunctions. This review presents the main bioethical options concerning the value of newborn life, usefulness of these rules in problematic situations and reasons for domination of one of these ethical points of view in practical decisions.

Goal: identify differences in the quality of life, life satisfaction and self-esteem between women who taking and not taking regular physical activity. Method and research group: The study included adult women who attended dance classes (research group N = 36) and women who did not dance and did not participate in any regular sports activities (N = 38). The average age of women was 52 years. Data were collected using the Quality of Life Questionnaire by M. Stras-Romanowska, A. Oleszkiewicz & T. Frackowiak, Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) by E. Diener, R.A. Emmons, R.J. Larson & S. Griffins and Self Esteem Scale (SES) by M. Rosenberg. Results: Statistical analyzes showed that women attending dance classes had significantly higher levels of self-esteem, satisfaction with life and quality of life than inactive dancers. The lack of diversity has only emerged in the metaphysical component of quality of life (U Mann-Whitney’s statistics did not turn out to be significant). Conclusions: Dance activity is associated with a higher level of quality of life of the examined women

Opis:
The aim of this text is to consider whether the meaning of life and purpose of life is the same. These philosophical investigations assume axiological objectivism, which claims two things: 1) values are a characters or qualities of objects, 2) phrases like ‘X is good’ are sentences in logical sense. As the main methods used in investigations was conceptual and linguistic analysis, which have been used to characterize the notion of ‘life’ and ‘meaning’. This step allowed to precise notion of ‘meaning of life’ and allowed to consider the titled question. Result is negative: meaning of life is based on values, and not on arbitrarily taking purposes. If meaning of life is a some kind of essential good, then purposes cannot make life meaningful, if themselves are not valuable.
