Opis:: The research and exploring of the old parish libraries allows us to understand the processes associated with their foundation and use. Visitations in the Diocese of Kraków carried on in the eighteenth century revealed that the parish clergy cared for the collection of books. Priests clearly appreciated books’ auxiliary role in teaching and preaching. This is confirmed by quite a substantial collection of books in Lelów and Wolbrom deaneries. The large number of books on theology and preaching collected in some parishes indicates that the local parish and assistant priests were interested in reading. In addition to this the synod regulations and pastoral letters encouraged and supported the collecting of books. Church authorities rightly and wisely recognized the useful role of books in supporting pastoral work of the clergy. Therefore, the resolutions of the Synod of Bishops and pastoral letters pointed to the problem of access by the clergy to the most essential aid in preaching and hearing of confessions. Library resources were growing, mainly through individual donations, larger bequests and also by purchase. Initially, the priests created private collections of books according to their own needs or personal interests. Later on, they donated these books to parish libraries. These collections, consistent in their ideological content, reflected the view of the people, who created the libraries and used them. They are a sign of a high intellectual culture of the book donors. As it is evident from the above findings, in terms of the existence of parish libraries in the two deaneries the situation was quite good. Over time, their number and the number of books was increasing steadily. Figures from the source not only confirm this, but also point to the fact that in general those collections were decreasing. This was associated with the widespread practice of expansion of the private collections by adding books from the church collection. In addition, many books were destroyed as a result of numerous fi res, invasions and theft. The fact of missing certain books, though not beneficial to the church library is always an indicator that they were in use.

Opis:: One of the statutory tasks of the Centre for Church Archives Libraries and Museums is to gather and organise materials of Church provenance. The most valuable materials are microfilmed and digitized in the documentary studio. So far, the most important materials from the below mentioned libraries have been microfilmed in the Centre for Church Archives Libraries and Museums: the Pauline Fathers’ library in Jasna Góra, the Cistercians’ library in Mogilno, the Carmelite Nuns’ library in Crakow, the Poor Clares’ library in Stary Sącz and Crakow, the Visitandines’ library in Crakow, the Benedictine monks’ library in Tyniec and the Benedictine nuns’ library in Przemyśl and Staniątki, the library of Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in Miechów and the Norbertine Sisters’ library in Imbramowice. The Centre for Church Archives Libraries and Museums also organizes symposia on book collections of the Church. Reports and papers delivered in symposia are printed in a semi-annual magazine „Church Archives Libraries and Museums.” The magazine also contains the catalogues of monastic libraries and monographs on individual libraries.

Opis:: The collections of the Library of Silesian Clerical Seminary, which history dates back to the 1920s, have not been examined satisfactorily to date. In the interwar period the library built its collections through purchases and generous donations. The article focuses on this part of donations which came from the authors themselves, mainly priests of Kraków archdiocese and Katowice diocese, secular persons in a minor extent. They donated 50 works in total, among them books, dissertations and articles previously published in periodicals. All of them were the latest publications on theology, Church history and related studies and covered a wide spectrum of religious issues. Some books are signed with author’s inscription, which greatly increases their value.

Opis:: Seit ihrem Anfang im Jahre 200 I hat die Theologische Bibliothek mit 52 polnischen Instituten, vorwiegend Bibliotheken der Theologischen Fakultäten, Vereinbarungen über den Austausch ihrer Veröffentlichungen getroffen. Gegenstände des Tausches sind alle durch die Theologischen Fakultäten veröffentlichten Werke: Bücher, Serien, Zeitschriften. Somit bekommt unsere Bibliothek sämtliche Publikationen aller Theologischen Fakultäten. Darüber hinaus gibt es mit den Bibliotheken der Priesterseminare eine Absprache, Titel für Titel zu tauschen. So gelangt etwa ein Drittel der Zeitschriften, die für uns von Belang sind, in unsere Sammlung. Obwohl ursprünglich beabsichtigt war, nur Zeitschriften zu tauschen, bekommen wir jetzt auf diese Art auch eine erhebliche Anzahl von Büchern und Serien. Auf diese Weise bekommt die Theologische Bibliothek nicht nur die neuesten theologischen Publikationen, die am wichtigsten sind, sondern auch ältere Werke, die am Markt nicht mehr erhältlich sind. Dieser Austausch der Veröffentlichungen spielt eine große Rolle bei der Vervollständigung des Buchbestandes unserer Bibliothek. Er dient auch der Förderung von Arbeiten der Theologischen Fakultät und bietet eine wichtige Möglichkeit der Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Bibliotheken.

Opis:: In the period from 25th March until 14th May 2006 at ,Old Synagogue Gallery, affiliated to the Circuit Museum in Nowy Sącz, ,Historical Writing of Cistercian Fathers of Szczyrzyc was exhibited. The purpose of the exhibition was to display the most valuable and the oldest historical writings kept in custody of the Archive and the Cistercian Library in Szczyrzyc, and to appeal the same to a wider audience. The exhibition inter alia covered: medieval parchments with seals, manuscript books, beautifully decorated antiphonaries, graduals and cantionals and old prints as well as the only incunabula found in Poland. Moreover, the exhibition was complemented with the Cistercian costumes, enlarged reproductions of pages of historic books, and pictures that normally decorate the walls of the monastery in Szczyrzyc.
