The compounding is a fundamental process of word formation and its importance to our understanding of language is crucial. The study of compounds for the last few years has been at the centre of attention in such areas of linguistics as computational approaches, psycholinguistics and language acquisition. Linguists advanced hypotheses not only regarding the construction of compounds, but also where they fit into the model of grammar. The paper attempts to answer some basic questions pertaining to lexical creativity in nominal compounding in Italian sports column. These include the definition of the concept, the types of noun-noun compounds in Modern Italian and a brief comparison of these types.

The paper discuss the syntactic patters of new borrowed lexis and neologisms with regard to the relation between lexis and grammar (syntax). Using a functional approach, the analysis describes the selection process both at the level of lexis and form in various discourses. The authors provide support to their theses based on a selection of new lexis of the past two decades, explaining how it functions in the available text corpora.

It has been an empirical fact that almost all the words are polysemous. A standard dictionary such as the Petit Robert lists 60,000 entries which correspond to 300,000 meanings. Thus, in this particular dictionary one word is paired with five different senses on average. Moreover, what is being dealt with here is no more than a general reference work, designed for a daily use. It contains only most frequent and general items, but disregards all other available meanings. In what follows, contextual properties will be demonstrated to be able to set apart each instance of polysemy, thus offering an effectual tool likely to do away with ambiguities.

This work deals with the situation of languages in contact and explores the nature of bilingual lexicon by studying lexical availability. Based on the results published in 2010 in Lèxic disponible de València, and in relation to ‘town’ as the center of interest, the study applied a new analytical tool called DispoGrafo, which enabled us to observe issues related to the construction and organization of the mental lexicon, for example, the incidence or profitability of facilitating semantic–priming–in clusters made up of three or more closely linked elements. The sample was obtained from 464 high school students of 2nd baccalaureate in the Valencia province, and was established to represent the ‘normal language’ variable. Two subgroups were formed: valencià-L1 (253 students) and valencià-L2 (211 students).

Artykuł ma na celu przybliżenie związków wartości z emocjami utrwalonych w leksykonie mentalnym Polaków, Rosjan i Niemców. Analiza materiału językowego pozyskanego w rezultacie testu swobodnych skojarzeń, oparta na metodologii badań kognitywnych oraz psychologicznej skali PANAX-X, pokazuje, że pojęcia odsyłające do stanów afektywnych są obecne w profilach asocjacyjnych większości jednostek aksjologicznych. Najwięcej związków z emocjami pozytywnymi stwierdzono w profilach wartości odczuciowych, najmniej lub brak emocji – w profilach wartości społecznych i moralnych. Wyniki poświadczające wysoki status wartości odczuciowych w systemie aksjologicznym respondentów i związane z nimi postawy propulsywne oraz niższą pozycję innych wartości można tłumaczyć dominacją orientacji postmaterialistycznej współczesnych użytkowników trzech języków.

ReviewThis text is a review of the work entitled Baltu valodu atlants. Leksika 1: Flora (Eng. Atlas of the Baltic Languages. Lexis 1: Flora), published in Vilnius in 2013.The publication was prepared by linguists from the Institute of Latvian Language and the Institute of Lithuanian Language. The Atlas presents vocabulary from the second part of the 20th century on the territory of Latvia and Lithuania and partly of Belarus and Poland. The authors prepared 46 maps and descriptions of 26 words (connected with flora), which showed different phonetic variants of derivatives, linguistic parallels between the Latvian and Lithuanian dialects (lexical, semantic, geographical) and common Slavic-Baltic zone of interference. RecenzjaTekst jest recenzją pracy Baltu valodu atlants. Leksika 1: Flora, ktora została wydana w Wilnie w 2013 r. Publikację opracowali litewscy i łotewscy lingwiści z Instytutu Języka Litewskiego Akademii Nauk Litwy i Instytutu Języka Łotewskiego Uniwersytetu Łotewskiego w Rydze. W Atlasie zaprezentowano słownictwo z drugiej połowy XX w., funkcjonujące na obszarze Litwy, Łotwy a także częściowo Białorusi i Polski. Autorzy przedstawili 46 map i zaprezentowali opisy 26 nazw związanych z florą, ukazujących ich różne warianty fonetyczne oraz językowe paralele pomiędzy dialektami litewskimi i łotewskimi (leksykalne, semantyczne, geograficzne) oraz wspólną słowiańsko-bałtycką strefę kontaktów językowych.

Within the sports language, the lexical level is composed of slang, specialized terminology and figurative lexicon. This work analyzes the lexical-semantic characteristics of the football language in a corpus of news chronicles of Real Madrid football matches, published on the web site marca.com. We focus on the fundamental lexicon of these chronicles, as well as on the core concepts of them, their designations and the means of meaning.

In this paper we present a contribution to the transformation of PolNet, a Polish wordnet developed at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna, into a Lexicon Grammar of Polish. The current step consists in including verb-noun collocations and relations linking the verbal synsets to noun synsets. We focus on the concept of synonymy for two kinds of predicative entities: verbs and verb-noun collocations and on synset granularity problems that emerged at this stage of the project. The basis for the research was transcripts of 24 hours of monthly video recordings of three mothers speaking to their infants (for a period of eight months in each mother–infant dyad). In the frequency lexicon compiled from the mothers’ speech, the 20 most frequently used words were “be,” “right,” “well,” “self,” “yes,” “go,” “you,” ‘this,” “and,” “what,” “give,” “still,” “here,” “well,” “have,” “already,” “on,” “there,” “want,” and “where,” which underline the situational nature of mothers’ topics (“this,” “here,” “still,” “already,” “what,” and “where”) and their positive attitude towards the child (“right,” “yes,” “you,” and “well”). Moreover, the most often used nouns were the proper names of the infants in the diminutive form and an appellative “mom”; the most frequent adjectives were “little,” “good,” “big,” “pretty,” “beautiful,” and “clever,” while the most frequent adverbs were “nicely,” “beautifully,” and “well done.” Many of these words show a supportive and encouraging manner of infant-directed speech from mothers in infants’ preverbal stage of development.

What do parents know about their children’s vocabulary? A questionnaire/checklist study of lexical development in children aged 2–6The paper presents a study on lexical development of Polish children aged 2–6. Three tools were constructed for this purpose: “The Child Lexicon Development Questionnaire/Checklist”, “The Questionnaire: Communication and Family Routines“ and a personal questionnaire. All were filled in by children’s parents. The first tool comprised nouns, verbs and adjectives drawn in a layered drawing from the Frequency List of Polish Language Corpus (PWN, 2004). The next two consisted of questions related to interactions in the family, social environment and family SES. Data from 148 children were analyzed. Results revealed non-linear lexical growth with age, positive impact of diversified interactions with parents as well as of a number of different games/play situations with peers on children’s vocabulary. Interactions with parents mainly affected noun and adjective vocabulary, while the number of plays with peers affected verb vocabulary.

The following article concentrates on cognitive aspects of the translation. We are interestedin course of the translation process in the brain, which is one of the most complicated processes connected with language. It integrates not only the linguistic perception and production,but also code-switching. During the translation process occurs activation of the linguistic information organized in mental lexicon, along with the nonlinguistic knowledge stored in other components of the memory.

I have discussed cognitive aspects of translation and have attempted to pay particularattention to the cognitive conditions guaranteeing the correct process of translation. Translating from one language into another is, in my opinion, possible thanks to reference to the conceptual ground and information processing outside language. The division of a single mental lexicon common to two languages into two separate mental lexicons influences the quality of translation. The condition of a successful translation is the correct identification of the conceptual structure and this, in turn, is possible only after the division of the mental lexicons so that the lexical units have direct access to concepts beyond language and are able to activate them.
