Opis:
There is no need to prove the significant role played by legends, myths and stereotypes in the history of the world. Also in the Polish lands, we can find many stories connected with the history of the Jews. There is still no comprehensive study on legends concerning Jews in mediaeval Poland, but we already have the book by Haya Bar-Itzhak, a professor of Comparative Hebrew Literature at the Haifa University. An exception here may be the well-known legend about the love affair between King Kazimierz Wielki (Casimir the Great) and the Jewish girl Esther, which has been widely described in many works. Of special importance is the book written by the eminent literary historian and linguist, Chone Shmeruk, entitled 'Legenda o Esterce w literaturze jidysz i polskiej' (The Legend of Esther in Yiddish and Polish Literature).

This paper focuses on August von Kotzebue’s play “Der Freimaurer” [The Freemason], as a piece within the prolific genre of comedies about freemasons which emerged in the 1740s, and a work which includes numerous worldview-related allusions. In this context, the author extensively discusses the life and the oeuvre of the playwright who thus far has not been devoted any thorough study in Polish, apart from relatively brief mentions in works on the period and writers he had inspired.

The article presents the folk etymologies, which are contained in book “Legendy i podania Kurpiów” and are concerned of the proper names of hills, stones, clearings, forests and different places situated in Kurpie: Bycza Góra, Głaz Batorego, Krwawa Polana, Łupańce and Wzgórza Jękowe. The author juxtaposes all the folk etymologies of these names and compares them structurally and semantically with their scientific etymologies.

Dionizjusz Czubala is one of the most important contemporary Polish folklorists; his research pertains to the occupational folklore of potters and various forms of oral narratives. Among his works of particular value are his field studies concerning urban legends conducted in Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Mongolia, reports from which were published in the “FOAFtale News” bulletin, and research on memoirs connected with the Holocaust, published in the book O tym nie wolno mówić... Zagłada Żydów w opowieściach wspomnieniowych ze zbiorów Dionizjusza Czubali, 2019 (We Are Not Allowed to Speak about It… The Extermination of the Jews in Memoirs from the Collection of Dionizjusz Czubala). He is the author of numerous monographs and collections of folklorist texts, including: Folklor garncarzy polskich, 1978 (The Folklore of Polish Potters); Podania i opowieści z Zagłębia Dąbrowskiego. Sto lat temu i dzisiaj, 1984 (Legends and Stories from the Dąbrowa Basin. A Hundred Years Ago and Today); Opowieści z życia. Z badań nad folklorem współczesnym, 1985 (Stories from Life. Even if not as intensive as a hundred years ago, or during the “ethnic revival” of the seventies, but again growing with the internet, there is a competition in North America between ethnicities for attention, recognition, respect, and sympathy. There are various players, the leadership in clubs and in organizing festivals and parades, musical events, producers of websites, the foreign-language press, the relevant university departments, even, indirectly, foreign governments. And, of course, there is grass-roots prejudice that is meant to be cultivated. Historical legends are, of course, not the only means to boost ethnic ego and prestige. The essay deals with the ethnic legends about the Civil War period that have been present in German-American historiography.

When I came to Krakow for the first time several years ago and tried to get some information about the Jewish Krakow, among the first-hand information I was offered in the bookshops were a few small booklets with legends about the Jews in this town. This is nothing special, for wherever one goes as a tourist one gets the same genre of literature: local legends and tales. It seems, therefore, that the popular legends indeed offer the first-hand information about the specific climate and the self-estimation of the inhabitants at a specific place. It is obviously the tales of a city that infuse life to its stones and places more than all exact historical data one can gather. The legend gives, so to speak, a short-hand résumé of the most typical and central features as well as the spirit of a place.

The article is devoted to two landmarks of Warsaw and Copenhagen, and it additionally makes a digression about the mermaid statue in Ustka. The author chooses not to offer structural or comparative analysis. Instead, he proposes to investigate the convergence and divergence of the symbols’ origin, their roots and utilization in cultural texts. Finally, he encounters fundamental cultural differences between the two, not so distant countries.

The text concentrates on the multidimensional aspects of transforming a Masurian town into a tourist attraction. The analyzed material includes tourist brochures, museum guides and leaflets, town promotion events, fairs, and festivals. The article demonstrates what role folk literature and local lore play in the recapturing of the site identity, especially when it is part of Recovered Territories. It further shows how certain aspects of this process are forgotten. The author investigates cultural meanings of such procedures, uncovers attitudes towards history and local memory, and finally asks questions about their role in contemporary culture.

The implication of legends, fairy tales or stories to the teaching of foreign languages is not a new idea: the usefulness of such texts teaching Polish as a foreign language has already been emphasized in the literature of the subject. Researchers point to an important fact that manifests itself in teaching: we teach the language to adults, but we teach them as if they were children. The essential attributes of the texts in question make us refer to our personality and cultural identity, because fairy tales and legends are deeply rooted in us and co‑create an intercultural and intergenerational bridge between the past and the present. They are also the cradle of linguistic and cultural interactions with family, people of the same nationality, but also people from other cultures and languages. These texts show how much we grow into the culture of a given society and adopt traditional patterns of behavior, and hence they prove that the cycle of linguistic and cultural transmission is permanent. The cultural message takes place by introducing young generations to tradition and fundamental values of national, European and world culture.

The conquest of the Near East by Alexander of Macedon began a new era in the history of this region. This pregnant event was quite differently perceived and judged by contemporaries in conquered lands, Palestine among them. To those, the Macedonian's victory over the Persians meant little more than one hegemonist replacing another. It must have been with concern, or perhaps with hope, that they awaited possible changes under the new political arrangement. We know little about Alexander's direct rule over Palestine, but the historical evidence we have suggests that the behavior of local populations in the area did not always meet the expectations of Macedonian conquerors. One example may be seen in the attitude of the Jerusalem Temple's high priest, who, despite Alexander's superiority at arms, firmly declared his loyalty to the Persian king (Jos. AJ 11, 317-319), while some in Samaria's elites chose to follow their self-interest and did not hesitate to join the conqueror (Jos. AJ 11, 321-324, 340-345). Although local elites and communities declared their willingness to cooperate with the Macedonian monarch, there were no avoiding tensions and conflicts between locals and newcomers. One such instance was a mutiny in Samaria city against the Macedonians, during which the Syrian governor Andromachus was killed. In retaliation, the rebellion was quenched in blood and Macedonian settlers were brought into Samaria.

The paper makes up an attempt to systematize and occasionally verify the views on the medieval motifs which were to be used while creating the world of Star Wars. The synchronic method applied in various publications lies behind opinions according to which the inspiration here included: Arthurian legends, the medieval concept of minne, visions of hell, the history and tradition of the Knights Templar, as well as the samurai in feudal Japan. These opinions cannot be regarded as entirely grounded. The remarks on the reception of some motifs related to the samurai or the Knights Templar seem justified as well as the plot of courtly love and the medieval image of hell. However, insistent juxtaposing, among others, of the individual stages of the lives of the saga’s main characters with the fortunes of king Arthur is controversial.

Arthurian legend is one most powerful and influential story of the Middle Ages. None other tale of the medieval times has retained such an immense popularity throughout the centuries. Despite the importance of King Arthur himself, there is yet another member of the Round Table whose exploits inspired the English audience even more than the fabled ruler’s. The popularity of Sir Gawain seems to be a uniquely English phenomenon. Often disregarded or even despised in the French tales, Sir Gawain retained almost infallible admiration and interest on the British Isles, inspiring such great masterpieces as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Especially the late Middle Ages witnessed a most remarkable discrepancy in the literary portrayal of King Arthur’s nephew. This paper strives to present the dual evolution of the character of Sir Gawain in the medieval literature, on the basis of a comparative analysis of various Arthurian texts both exclusively English as well as those based on or inspired by French sources.

Celem artykułu jest wykazanie, że kategorie legend miejskich oraz fałszywych wiadomości mogą znaleźć zastosowanie w badaniach nad relacjami międzykulturowymi. W pierwszej części przybliżono, czym są legendy miejskie i fałszywe informacje na tle innych problematycznych narracji, takich jak teorie spiskowe, panika moralna i makroplotki. Drugą część stanowi studium przypadku legendy miejskiej dotyczącej imigrantów łamiących tabu kulturowe polegające na spożywaniu mięsa łabędzi. Szczegółowa analiza tego przypadku pozwala w ostatniej części artykułu wykazać, jak legendy miejskie i fałszywe wiadomości kształtują za sprawą mechanizmów banalnego stereotypizowania relacje między różnymi grupami kulturowymi i mogą się przyczyniać do naruszenia bezpieczeństwa kulturowego.
The purpose of the article is to demonstrate that the categories of urban legends and fake news can be applied to the study of cross-cultural relations. The first part approximates what urban legends and fake news are against the background of other problematic narratives, such as conspiracy theories, moral panics and macro-gossip. The second part is a case study of an urban legend about immigrants breaking the cultural taboo of eating swan meat. A detailed analysis of this case allows the final part of the article to demonstrate how urban legends and fake news shape relations between different cultural groups through mechanisms of trivial stereotyping and can contribute to violations of cultural security.
