In this article, partial results of an empirical pilot study on prosodic strategies are presented in freely spoken conference presentations by German linguists. The study aims to take a closer look at the coexistence of prosodic and pragmatic phenomena in scientific discourse and to document the first observations on the speaking behavior of scientists in the field of prosody. The subject of investigation is three selected expert lectures, which were recorded as part of the GeWiss project at international conferences in Germany. The basis of the investigation is the auditory analysis carried out by the author, which is additionally supplemented by acoustic information in Praat.

The spread of mandatory military service for all citizens in II Rzeczypospolita caused the rapid growth of representatives of national minority in the army, Ukrainians in particular, who were often indifferent or sometimes even hostile to the country. One of the main reasons for indifference or hostile from Ukrainians was the events of Polish-Ukrainian war 1918–1919, the fight for Lviv, the defeat of ZUNR (West Ukrainian People’s Republic), in which Poland was considered to be guilty. At the same time the level of national and civil consciousness of many Poles was low enough. Taking all that into consideration, military and political authorities realized the necessity of organizing some educational activities for recruits. In the army there were some regular educational lectures with tendentiously chosen historical examples, whose aim was to smooth tensions in bilateral relations, to integrate Ukrainians into society, to bring up the sense of patriotism to Motherland, country of residence and finally to assimilate. To reach this aim, excursions, theatres and cinemas were also used for this reason.

There has been a call in recent years for an integration of cognitive load theory into instructed second language acquisition practices to assist language learners by taking advantage of theories on human cognitive architecture. This paper seeks to move the conversation on how this integration might be achieved by presenting findings from survey data conducted with learners enrolled online courses at a cyber-university in South Korea (n = 68). Findings show a statistically significant positive relationship between distraction and extraneous load. These results are used to postulate a model for explaining the how the effects of extraneous load on attention can be integrated into second language learning theory. Pedagogic implications of this are the value of explicitly signaling key vocabulary and grammar, ensure spatial and temporal considerations are made when using multimodal instruction, and placing learners at the center of decisions on the blend of media they experience in instruction.

Opis:
In the article Imagination and creation versus politics and power – on the example of Paris lectures by Adam Mickiewicz Ewelina Głowacka proposes to examine the vision of history created by Mickiewicz in lectures, in which many conviction about the past were built not so much on facts but on the imagination. The analysis mainly concerns the poet's etymological ideas contained in two lectures of the third course about the origin of the Slavs, where he told the ancient history of these people by studying the etymology of individual words. Using postcolonial theory, the author demonstrates that the historiosophy of lectures given at the Collège de France was a thoughtful strategy designed for specific political effects. As a professor of Slavic literature and languages at the cathedral in Paris, Mickiewicz assumes the role of a spokesperson for the Slavs in the West. The main goal of the poet's speeches was associated with the mission of freeing the Slavs from subordination to Western European countries, and in particular, of winning the independence of the Republic of Poland. As a poet and a visionary, Mickiewicz knew that such changes do not take place only in the military and official domains, but also, and perhaps above all – in the sphere of the imagination. Thus, the poet tried to create a new Slavic myth that would empower the Slavic culture and increase its political significance. In this context, theories of Hobsbawm's invented tradition and Anderson's imagined community are recalled, as they allow for a better understanding of the community-forming dimension of the narrative built by the poet. To outline the origins of Mickiewicz's postcolonial attitude, the poet's early works were also discussed, as already in his student days he exhibited cognitive skepticism about the official historiography and noticed some forms of symbolic violence. From an early age, he also knew that imagination is an indispensable tool of science.

The article presents an outline of the history of institution called University Public Lectures, which functioned at the University of Warsaw during the interwar period, starting from the year 1922. The task of the institution was to organise, on a regular basis, open lectures in order to reach a wide audience from outside the academic community. The large number of lecturers recruited from among the most eminent professors of the University of Warsaw, specialising in various fields of academic research, ensured the high substantive level of the organised lectures. The organisation of the lectures constituted one of the ways in which the University of Warsaw was carrying out its task of promoting scientific knowledge and presenting the results of the most recent scientific research to the general public. Due to the aim of the lectures, their subject matter was quite diverse and often centered around the recent problems of the Polish community and state. Although the idea of open lectures was not novel at the time, University Public Lectures contributed to the adult education provided by the University of Warsaw.

Aim. The purpose of the study is to research the career of Professor Ioannikii Malynovskyi in higher education, his contribution to its development, the goals of the university education. Methods. In the study several different methods were used in the system and interaction. A dialectical method, which boils down to the fact that all phenomena in society have a beginning and an end. The historical method was used to take into account historical traditions, socio-cultural roots of the state and law. A logical-semantic method was also used to help define the conceptual apparatus used in the study. Formal-legal method was used to analyse and disclose legal concepts. Results. The research showed that Malynovskyi conducted scientific researches in the chosen field and by getting acquainted with the heritage of national and world culture. The professor made considerable efforts in education to democratise higher education, in particular, by admitting women to higher education in Western Siberia. He defined the goals of university teaching: 1) to learn to acquire knowledge, the method of scientific research and, 2) to get acquainted with the current state of science. The scientist was the first to create a chronologically consistent, comprehensive subject course on the history of Rus’ law. Conclusions. Malynovskyi’s contribution to the democratisation of higher education already belongs to history, but his scientifically based recommendations on the goals of university education and means of achieving it are not without relevance today, but especially on the practical side in training future legal practitioners  which are topical for today.

Opis:
At the basis of “Questions of Boundaries Research Group”, carrying out its activity since November 2006 as an interdepartmental unit of Adam Mickiewicz University, lays the idea of discussion. In this discussion, or rather a coincidence of discussions, due to its dialogic formula, a distinctive question came through, and we decided to put it in the first information about this idea (and also, from the very beginning, at the website: www.graniczne.amu.edu.pl) as its specific, constitutional preamble: ”Is it possible to create a platform for joint questions, talks, lectures and discussions dealing with basic issues, such as image of the world and our own place in it – for people who do not have and do not need to have one shared point of view”. Our starting point is the consciousness of a growing difficulty towards the aim of comprehending the world we experience as a whole. We find ourselves at the point at which simultaneously: - almost all possibilities of a modern scientific research are disclosed (especially technological possibilities), along with their hardly predictable consequences for a human being; – the possibility of a deeper basic understanding of the way the world – and our own life – are given to us, is sparkling through, providing a chance that we will achieve an inventive attitude towards those realities in our civilization which appear to be dangerous or spoiled; – there prevails a difficulty with the underlying intention of any science – to describe the world as a whole. Nevertheless, the desire to perceive the world as a whole has not vanished. It is present even when there comes along a certain skepsis as to the probability of satisfying this desire. We cannot excuse ourselves from attempting to answer the question why is it so. We also should not resign from trying to express this desire. We should realize that, although a common reaction to discomfort  is trying to remove it, namely to harmonize a disrupted view of reality as quickly as possible, it is by no means the only possible solution. It is rather immediate and temporary and, for some fundamental processes of problem solving (investigative as well as existential), it may have a restraining effect. Above all, it means closing to the “unexpected” which has a potential of possibilities in itself. Perhaps that is why, instead of quickly reducing and eliminating inconvenient situations, it is worth “to condensate” them on purpose. In the academic year 2007/2008 Questions of Boundaries Research Group has offered students and PhD’s about a dozen of classes per each semester (http://www.graniczne.amu.edu.pl/ PPG Wiki/Wiki.jsp?page =20072008). Most prominent among them are the series of interdisciplinary lectures: “Xenophobia, Racism and Exclusion (because of Race, Sex and Age)” and “Boundaries of Humanity: Between Human and Animal World” along with “Boundaries of Humanity: Between the World of Human and the World of Machines” – these are delivered by the representatives of many varying disciplines. This year’s research priorities consist of two projects: “Redefinition of the Fundamental Terms of Humanism in the Light of Holocaust” and “Spaces of Community”. Lectures, seminars and classes of Research Group have raised wide interest and, among our other intentions, they begin to play an important role in creating a meeting space for students and PhD’s of various faculties and specialties.

Thomas Bever was an English civil lawyer who taught Roman law in the 18th century Oxford. The final part of his lectures was kind of a comparative approach to the different European legal systems. Among them, Th. Bever presented the history of an old Polish law. His lecture was a type of a short description of the most important facts of Polish legal history, since the legendary times of Sarmatia until the modern events of the reign of Stanisław August Poniatowski and the first partition of Poland. The foregoing work presents the original text of Th. Bever’s lecture (which is part of his lecture notes currently stored by the archives of the University of Edinburgh), the Polish translation of the lecture and its commentary.

Adam Mickiewicz’s Paris lectures and the idea of universal religionThe first half of nineteenth century in France brings the development of several currents of thought that are trying to find a solution to the problems affecting society in this period (pauperisation, crisis of traditional values, oppressed nations). Catholic traditionalists, Illuminati, utopian socialists and humanitarians often formulate the idea of a universal religion, derived from a primal revelation and evolving through the ages, or the idea of a new religion of the future. The aim of the article is to situate in that wider context Mickiewicz’s Paris Lectures and the convictions of the Polish poet on Slavic religion and Messianism. The text is divided into two parts, corresponding to the key aspects of the topic: the first part talks about the search for a revelation preceding the Judeo-Christian revelation, and the second one concerns the announcement of a new revelation, which completes and fulfills the former one. Prelekcje paryskie Adama Mickiewicza i idea religii uniwersalnejPierwsza połowa XIX wieku przynosi we Francji rozwój wielu nurtów usiłujących znaleźć rozwiązanie problemów trawiących społeczeństwo w tym okresie (pauperyzacja, kryzys tradycyjnych wartości, ucisk ludów europejskich).
