Opis:
Spark-ignited internal combustion engines are in the use for over130 years (first example was presented by Otto in 1876). The engine development is directed to more power, better efficiency and lower emissions. Mixture formation and in-cylinder motion are the main parameters of the combustion process improvement. One of the effective methods of engine development is lean combustion. Application of lean-burn combustion systems in spark ignitron engines has been proposed many times. Such systems have several important advantages in comparison with conventional systems. Lean-burn combustion makes possible engine operation at high compression ratio, equivalent to high thermal efficiency and at low emission of toxic components of the combustion gases. Lean-burn combustion is also a subject of serious limitations, requiring remedial steps. General limitations are introduced by a fall of the reaction rate, equivalent to increased time of combustion. Lean-burn combustion introduces also changes to flame structure: it contributes with increased flame thickness and with a rise of quenching distance. These changes influence limit conditions of spark ignition. The only solution omitting this threat might be obtained by replacing of a spark ignition by another ignition system or by application of a spark ignition system with increased distance between electrodes and with much higher ignition energy. Typical solutions rationalizing lean-burn combustion in engines are discussed in the paper and some limit conditions highlighted..

Opis:
Current and further developing CO2 and emission regulations worldwide and the competition to full electric mobility deliver a challenge for internal combustion engines in general. A state of the art solution is the use of natural gas mainly contending methane to reduce CO2 significantly and to offer lowest emission levels. The EU-funded project GasOn developed engine concepts to fully exploit the advantages of CNG. This article describes the development of an innovative, monovalent engine dedicated to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and characterised by the lean burn concept and the innovative pre-chamber combustion.

Opis:
Combustion of lean hydrogen-air mixtures in an internal combustion (IC) spark ignited (SI) engine in respect of combustion knock effect is presented in this paper. It is known that making the combustible mixture leaner leads to both decreasing in-cylinder peak temperature of combustion and lengthening ignition lag. It also increases combustion duration. Having these issues on mind it could be concluded that combustion knock intensity decreases as well. It is reported that such a hypothesis is also correct when hydrogen based fuels are combusted in the IC engine, although hydrogen as an engine fuel, on the contrary to gasoline, is very susceptible to knock generation throughout the entire combustion duration. At the beginning the paper examines the combustion knock intensity on the basis of in-cylinder pressure traces. Next, a test-bed and obtained experimental results of hydrogen combustion in the IC single cylinder CFR engine are showed. Finally, analysis of knock intensity referring to lean hydrogen-air mixture ratio, expressed by the excess air number so-called lambda, is carried out. Significant conclusion from the analysis is that there is strong negative correlation between the hydrogen knock intensity and the excess air number lambda. In the end, comparison with exhaust gas recirculation as alternative way to reduce combustion knock, and constraints for leaning the hydrogen-air combustible mixture for the IC engine are discussed in the paper.

Opis:
Subject of the paper are converters of lean mixtures for SI engines with a good efficiency of NOx reduction. Investigation of new effective catalytic materials having good sorptive proprieties of nitrogen oxides and simultaneously resistant on the thermal destruction and chemical destruction are main aim of the paper. The operating idea of such converters and conditions of their work are also presented. Main objective of the paper is performance of the new reactor of the Pt/Rh-MgO/CeO2/Al2O3 formula. The magnesium oxide MgO is here an absorber of nitrous oxides and has an essential feature, it is resistant on sintering. Such reactor can be the alternative for generally applied converters containing the barium oxide. Experimental results of catalytic converter containing various quantities of magnesium oxide for SI engines with lean mixtures are presented in the paper. Researches involved both laboratory and engine tests. The laboratory researches concern the topography active surface of the reactor with the scanning electron microscopy) method. Size of platinum and rhodium crystallites obtainedfrom the Scherrer dependence analyzing the diffractive spectrum of the X-radiation (XRD) was about 5 nm. Moreover method covering of reactor's active layers on the metal- monolith is presented. Engine researches comprised CO, THC, and NOx conversion for two engines in conditions of lean (A/F=20.0), reach (A/F=14.0), and stoichiometric (A/F=14.7) mixtures. CO, THC, and NOx conversion were stated in the dependence of temperature catalytic process in conditions of the various mixtures.
