    The aim of the article is to present thematic motifs that appear in funeral speeches given by lay people. These speeches have the form of a one-sided narration, shaped to create the best possible picture of the deceased. The author analyses seven contemporary funeral speeches which were recorded during funeral ceremonies while saying farewell to deceased Polish politicians. The speeches discussed are characterized by a considerable degree of concentration on the achievements of the deceased. Focusing on deeds – especially in laudation – is a way of cementing the memory of a person who has influenced a certain community. The funeral speech, as a genre pattern, performs the function of sustaining memory about a particular person, whose picture acquires the form of a tendentious, deformed verbal monument. It does not only present the figure of the deceased, but also evaluates their achievements in an individual and collective dimension. The assessment in both cases is designed by the speaker and is often detached from the real social feelings. The speeches under analysis are a type of occasional speeches with not only invariant stylistic and structural features (which have been pointed out in scientific or advisory literature many times), but also invested with standard and repetitive thematic threads.

    The representation of Silesian cities during the late Middle Ages and early modern times combines illustrative and textual elements. Both of these elements are subject to certain rules typical of the poetics of the so-called laudation. The representation (imagery) of each of the analyzed cities (the analysis in this case concerns mainly the capital of Lower Silesia – Wrocław) has a corona muralis, along with significant dominant profiles, which are naturally the church towers and the town hall. The towers of Nysa in the image of Hartmann Schedel are associated with the idea of Flemish belfries. Since the time of Hartmann Schedel’s Chronicle of 1493 the vedutas have also been provided with a commentary, fulfilling the functions of a classical laudation that praises the city’s good natural location, the beautiful shape and power of its founder. The image and text from Hartmann Schedel’s Chronicle may be compared with the famous description of the city of Wroclaw by Barthel Stein of 1512. The least-known, if one of the oldest, image of Wroclaw is the panorama with John of Capistrano in the background of 1503; it refers to the view from Weltchronik of 1493 only to some extent, though presenting a more symbolic, sacred character. On the other hand, the picture of Wrocław made in 1537 during the trip of the Palatine Ottheinrich from Neuburg on the Danube to Cracow is more impressive, although symbolic elements also appear here. The view of the city of 1562 should be described as a picture of the ideal town, made for specific political reasons. In turn, the first measurement plan of Wroclaw by Frederick Groβ of 1579 and the view of Wroclaw from the volume of Braun and Hogenberg of 1572–1618 should be considered the typical Renaissance plan of the consciously inventory-like character. The plan of Frederick Groβ expresses the idea of the modularity of the city consisting of sacral buildings and rectangular building blocks. It can be compared with Legnica’s plans from the beginning of the 18th century. The text of Braun and Hogenberg’s volume can be regarded as an early example of comparative urban planning. The veduta of Lwówek, created in the 17th century, should be considered to be close to the medieval paintings of a perfectly protected city.

    Studium podejmuje kwestię pochwały medyka w wieku XVI na przykładzie łacińskiej oratio funebris wygłoszonej przez Jana Sariusza Zamoyskiego na pogrzebie Gabriela Falloppia w 1562 roku. Fallopius był znakomitym anatomem, którego ustalenia do dziś pozostają aktualne, wybitym botanikiem, wyjątkowym chirurgiem i szanowanym wykładowcą Uniwersytetu w Padwie. Oratio funebris zawiera pochwałę opartą na biografii zmarłego i w ten sposób realizuje humanistyczne założenia poddawania wzorców osobowych do naśladowania w dążeniu do cnoty. Artykuł przedstawia analizę wyborów dokonanych przez mówcę w zakresie retorycznej inwencji i amplifikacji pochwały.
    The study considers the issue of praise of the medic in the XVIth century using an example of Latin oratio funebris delivered by Jan Sariusz Zamoyski during the funeral of Gabriele Falloppio in 1562. Fallopius was a brilliant anatomist whose findings have remained valid to this day, an excellent botanist, an outstanding surgeon and physician, and an esteemed lecturer at the University of Padua. Oratio funebris contained praise based on the biography of the deceased and thus it could realise the humanistic assumptions of providing personal models to follow in the pursuit of virtue. The article presents an analysis of choices made by the speaker regarding rhetorical inventio and amplificatio, and modes of praising.

    Niniejszy artykuł został poświęcony konferencji naukowej „Sto lat polskiego prawa handlowego” oraz uroczystości wręczenia Profesorowi dr. hab. Andrzejowi Kidybie księgi jubileuszowej, która została przygotowana z okazji 40-lecia jego pracy naukowej. Uroczystość była podzielona na dwie części: część konferencyjną, merytoryczną oraz na obchody jubileuszu. W trakcie konferencji referaty wygłosili: prof. dr hab. dr h. c. Józef Frąckowiak (Uniwersytet Wrocławski) — „Miejsce prawa handlowego w systemie prawa i metody jego realizacji”, prof. dr hab. Wojciech Popiołek (Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach) — „Spółki prawa handlowego, czyli spółki prawa, którego nie ma” oraz prof. dr hab. dr h. c. Bernd Oppermann (Dziekan Wydziału Prawa Uniwersytetu im. Leibnitza w Hanowerze) — „Wyzwania prawa handlowego w ujęciu porównawczym”. Ceremonię obchodów jubileuszu rozpoczęła laudacja na cześć prof. dr. hab. Andrzeja Kidyby, którą wygłosił prof. dr hab. Wojciech Katner z Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, przybliżając sylwetkę Jubilata. Wręczenia prof. dr. hab. Andrzejowi Kidybie księgi jubileuszowej pt. „Sto lat polskiego prawa handlowego” dokonali jej redaktorzy wraz z pracownikami Katedry Prawa Gospodarczego i Handlowego Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie. Po wręczeniu księgi wystąpił sam Jubilat, który wygłosił mowę „Alfabet mój — trochę spowiedź — a nie testament mój”.
    This article was devoted to the scientific conference "One hundred years of Polish commercial law" and the ceremony of presenting Professor Andrzej Kidyba with the jubilee book on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his scientific work. The ceremony was divided into two parts: the conference part and the jubilee celebrations. In the course of the conference papers were delivered by: prof. dr h.c. Józef Frąckowiak (University of Wrocław) — "The place of commercial law in the system of law and methods of its implementation", Prof. Wojciech Popiołek (University of Silesia in Katowice) — "Commercial law companies i.e. companies under the law which does not exist" and Prof. Dr. h.c. Bernd Oppermann (Dean of the Faculty of Law, Leibnitz Universität Hannover) — "Challenges of Commercial Law in a Comparative Perspective". The ceremony began with a laudation in honour of Prof. Andrzej Kidyba, delivered by Prof. Wojciech Katner, PhD, of the University of Łódź, who introduced the personality of the Jubilarian. The jubilee book entitled "One hundred years of Polish commercial law" was presented by its editors and the staff of the Chair of Economic and Commercial Law, Maria Curie- Skłodowska University in Lublin. After the presentation of the book the Jubilarian himself gave a speech entitled "My Alphabet — a little confession — not my will".

    W XVII w. krasomówstwo towarzyszyło wszystkim ważnym wydarzeniom z życia politycznego i prywatnego. Okazją do zaprezentowania oratorskiego kunsztu było m. in. wesele. Najważniejsze oracje epitalamijne nazywane były oddawaniem panny i dziękowaniem za nią. Ich budowa i tematy zaś określone przez wypracowaną przez lata konwencję. W artykule przedstawię kompozycję i tematykę tych dwóch gatunków mów weselnych (oddawanie panny, dziękowanie za pannę) oraz analizę wybranych oracji Andrzeja Chryzostoma Załuskiego pod kątem środków służących pochwale.
    In the XVII century, oratory accompanied all important political and private events. An opportunity to present one’s elocutionary artistry was, among others, the wedding. The most important orations are called giving a maiden away and giving acknowledgement for a maiden. Their composition and themes were determined by a convention which had been developed over the course of years. My paper aims to present the composition and the subject area of the two types of wedding speech and the analysis of chosen Andrzej Chryzostom Załuski’s orations, in terms of measures to laudation.
