Opis:
The study, whose results are presented in the article, was aimed at identifying the structure of the phenomenon so-called late births, which takes place when both parents, at the time of the child’s birth, exceeded the age determining the beginning of – in the case of women – “late motherhood”, and in the case of men – “late fatherhood”. In order to know this issue, the data contained in the Demographic Yearbook (for years 2014–2018) was analyzed. The focus was also on understanding the causes of late births phenomenon and its consequences for the child. For this purpose, an analysis of the content of discussions on four Internet forums (active from 2009–2018) and comments posted on the article on the Internet regarding late motherhood was carried out. It was found out that in the years 2014–2018 the number of late births and their share in the total number of births increased (from 5.27% to 6.72%). Increases in the numbers of late births were noted for each of the fi ve-year age group, particularly clearly in the confi guration: father aged 40–44 and mother 45 and older. The following were recognized as the causes of the phenomenon of late births: postponing the implementation of reproductive plans, conception of a child, hoping that the child will be the guardian of aging parents, long period between attempts to conceive a child and pregnancy. Furthermore, it has also been found that Internet users see more restrictions than advantages of being a child born in the later years of parents’ life.

Late Cretaceous
Opis:
The study area is located in the central part of the Carpathian Foreland in Poland (Fig. 1), and the analysed interval includes mixed carbonate-clastic sediments of the Upper Cretaceous and the uppermost part of the profile of carbonate sediments of the Upper Jurassic. The sedimentation of the studied formations during the Late Jurassic and Cretaceous took place in the shelf zone of the northern, passive margin of the Tethys Ocean. The western Tethys, unlike its eastern margins, was not a single open ocean; rather, it covered many small plates, Cretaceous island arcs and microcontinents (Palcu & Krijgsman, 2023). The spatial range of the subbasins created between these islands was significantly limited, resulting in a large diversity of palaeoenvironments and the mixed carbonate-clastic sediments of a shallow sea. The entire Upper Jurassic to Cretaceous complex can be viewed as a carbonate platform that lasted almost until the end of the Late Cretaceous with an episode of Early Cretaceous erosion. The sedimentary cover formed at that time initially reached considerable thickness (presumably about 2,000 m). Dislocation and bathymetric differentiation within the carbonate platform initiated the development of a complex depositional environment. During the Late Cretaceous, the syndepositional activity of NW-SE dislocation sequences resulted in an extensive flexural deflection within the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sedimentary complex and lowermost part of the Upper Cretaceous complex. The resulting accommodation space was filled with a complex of Upper Cretaceous carbonate formations within which there are intervals with a significant share of siliciclastic material. At the end of the Late Cretaceous as well as in the Paleocene, movements of the Laramie phase led to the re-uplift of the analysed part of the Carpathian Foreland. During this tectonic episode, the reactivation of an older fault system occurred, mainly in the NW-SE directions. The Upper Cretaceous formations deposited in the flexural depression underwent a partial inversion and intensive erosion process, lasting until the beginning of the Neogene, which contributed to the reduction of thicknesses or the removal of some of the Upper Cretaceous formations, especially in the areas, adjacent to the major dislocations. The material for analysis consisted of 3D seismic data and geological information from the wells. In the scope of the project, we approached linking 3D seismic image and well data to reconstruct, as detailed as possible, the palaeoenvironment of the studied segment of the Late Cretaceous basin based on the chronostratigraphic method. The analysis shows various palaeomorphological elements that can bring insight into the sedimentation environments (Fig. 2). The significant influence of tectonic processes on the depositional history of the sedimentary basin was also evidenced. The tectonostratigraphic interpretation divided the Late Cretaceous sediments into two different tectonic phases (Łaba-Biel et al., 2023). Analysis of a thick Miocene interval that overlies directly on the Mesozoic formations enabled to reason about the influence of the Alpine orogenesis on the study area that was manifested by the reactivation of major regional faults in the central part of the Carpathian Foreland. This phase is directly related to the stage of progressive closure of the Tethys Ocean due to the collision of tectonic plates.

Late Miocene
Opis:
The Northern Sicilian-Maghrebian Chain courses W-E from the Trapani Mts to the Peloritani Mts and is composed by a set of tectonic units deriving from the Miocene-Pleistocene deformation of the Northern African Continental Margin. Inside it three main geotectonic elements ("external", Sicilide and "Austroalpine") are present and outcrop juxtaposed with a W-E trend. The external element composes the more western Trapani, Palermo and Western Madonie Mts, the Sicilide composes the Eastern Madonie and Nebrodi Mts, while the "Austroalpine" composes the more eastern Peloritani Mts. The orogen shows a culmination in the Trapani Mts and a depression in the Peloritani Mts. The main plicative stages are relatable to late Oligocene-early Miocene from the more internal sectors, while the deformation of the more external sectors starts from early-middle Miocene. The Sicilian chain body is re-involved in tectonism since late Tortonian, which persists until the recent time. During this interval, the deformation of the Sicilian Chain continued by activation of fault systems with different displacements. In the present paper, an important extensional tectonic stage is recognised, starting from the Tortonian; it is supported by structural data and shows through several geological sections across the northern sectors of the Sicilian orogen. This deformation is of exceeded wedge critical taper values, controls the early stages of the Tyrrhenian Basin opening, and is represented by low-angle fault system, producing tectonic omissions in the stratigraphic sequence. The detachment fault system is subsequently displaced by a complicated grid of Plio-Pleistocene net- and strike-slip fault system that controls the genesis of tectonic depressions in the northern off-shore areas of the Sicilian Chain. This neotectonic system may be reconnect to a W-E trending simple shear system, which controls the more recent Tyrrhenian Basin development.

Opis:
The Cínovec (Zinnwald) Sn-W ore deposit is genetically linked to intrusion of late Variscan, highly fractionated granite which expresses the latest evolutionary stage of a volcano-plutonic system of the Teplice caldera. Whole intrusion is relatively highly fractionated and from bottom ( ~ 1500 m) to top part of cupola-shaped deposit is obviously following succession from biotite (annite) granodiorite-granite-zinnwaldite granite, with the partly greisenized uppermost part at 300–500 m depth (Štemprok 1965, 1971). In 1961−63 the Czechoslovakian Geological Survey (CGS) drilled a 1596 m deep borehole in the Sn-W-mineralized Cínovec granite cupola (Štemprok 1965, Štemprok & Šulcek 1969). All studied rock types include W- and Sn-bearing minerals (wolframite series, scheelite and cassiterite) and disseminated accessory Nb-Ta-Ti-W- Sn minerals (Štemprok & Šulcek 1969, Štemprok 1989, Johan and Johan 1994) which were obtained from the collection of CGS in Prague and studied by BSE and electron microprobe. They crystallized in following succession: rutile + columbite + cassiterite (biotite granodiorite) → rutile + columbite + W-rich ixiolite + cassiterite + scheelite in zinnwaldite granite. Textural relationships of these Nb- Ta-Ti-Sn-W minerals indicate predominantly their magmatic origin and part of them (e.g., cassiterite and columbite) show minor post-magmatic alteration phenomena like distinctly inhomogeneous mixtures of secondary pyrochlore-group minerals (“oxykenopyrochlore” and oxycalciopyrochlore). Nb/Ta and Fe/Mn fractionation trends led to characteristic Mn and Ta enrichment from bottom (biotite granite) to uppermost zinnwaldite granite, especially in columbite-group minerals. While Nb/ Ta fractionation is limitedly applied, effective Fe/ Mn fractionation led to significant Mn – enrichment of late-magmatic phases [columbite-(Mn) and W-rich ixiolite]. Post-magmatic to hydrothermal metasomatic fluids caused partial greisenization of the granites and this stage is represented by latest columbite + scheelite + cassiterite + wolframite assemblage. The last two minerals were objects of extensive mining in the past. Although the hydrothermal system was enriched in F and Li (presence of topaz and zinnwaldite), there are only relatively limited Nb/Ta and Fe/Mn fractionations in post-magmatic columbite. Similarly to primary fractionation, both Nb/Ta and Fe/Mn ones take place and overlap characteristic primary Mn-enrichment. Effective Mn-redistribution is predominantly controlled by crystallization of Mn-dominant wolframite like hübnerite in the hydrothermal stage. Scandium is typical rare element in primary (magmatic) and secondary (hydrothermal) mineral assemblage. While primary Sc-fractionation continues the ongoing Sc-enrichment mostly in columbite to uppermost parts of intrusion, the hydrothermal Sc-redistribution is controlled by crystallization of main ore mineral – wolframite, which consumed a major part of scandium. Main substitution mechanisms in rutile-cassiterite-wolframite-columbite assemblage include following heterovalent substitutions: (i) Ti 3 (Fe,Mn) 2+ −1 (Nb,Ta) −2 , (ii) Ti 2 Fe 3+ −1 (Nb,Ta) −1 , (iii) (Nb,Ta) 4 Fe 2+ −1 W −3 . Moreover, a part of minor cations can enter via: (iv) (Fe,Mn) 2+ 1 W 1 (Fe,Sc) 3+ −1 (Nb,Ta) −1 into wolframite lattice, (v) W 1 (Ti,Sn) 1 (Nb,Ta) −2 , (vi) (Sc,Fe) 3+ 3 (Fe,Mn) 2+ −2 (Nb,Ta) −1 , and (vii) W 2 Sc 3+ 1 (Nb,Ta) −3 into columbite lattice. Calculated Fe 3+ can be introduced into rutile lattice predominantly via mechanism (ii), while via (iv) into wolframite lattice and together with Sc 3+ via (vi) into columbite lattice. The last mechanism results in charge imbalance of A and B positions of columbite lattice entering R 3+ cations to. The distinctly varying calculated Fe 3+ values can refer to changing f O 2 during columbite, rutile, W-rich ixiolite and wolframite crystallization. Therefore, the textural and crystallo-chemical features of studied Nb-Ta-Ti-Sn-W oxide minerals in the Cínovec granite cupola reflect a complex geochemical development of this granite system and ore mineralization from primary magmatic stage, through late-magmatic to subsolidus conditions, and ending in distinct hydrothermally – metasomatic overprint of pre-existing phases.

Opis:
The authoress examines the subject of autonomous learning during late adulthood. Referring to the book by Knud Illeris 'Three Dimensions of Learning' and to her own research and didactic experiences, she asks questions about capabilities to learn autonomously during successive stages in the life of an adult, where education, being generally a combination of necessity and capability, is often undertaken as a compromise between one's desires and one's life needs as well as between one's desires and social expectations. The authoress takes particular interest in the period of late adulthood that stretches from the turning point in one's life to the point when one's life comes to an end. According to Knud Illeris it is during this period that an individual is being gradually liberated from the social determinants of learning. In order to explain what this turning point in life may be she refers to the concept of biographical experiencing of floating, proposed by Agnieszka Bron (2006, 2009). The authoress also presents her students' reflections on being autonomous while learning, expressed after the meetings with the members of the University of the Third Age in Zielona Góra. Furthermore, she defines the scope of discourse conducted with the students within the frames of andragogy classes, which was inspired by the questions about autonomy and freedom of learning. In the end, the authoress refers to her own biographical research, which were conducted among part-time students from the borderland region and often focused heavily on education as seen from the point of view of obligation and life necessity.

The article deals with the question of the existence of the Jewish community and the barriers between Jews and non-Jews in the Old Warsaw from the 1420s to the 1520s. The contact points and areas of the two communities, as well as the tools used to communicate between them, are distinguished. Firstly, Jewish property in the space of Old Warsaw, as well as neighbouring and economic contacts, are noticed. Then, the presence of Jews both from Warsaw and other towns and regions in court sessions is analysed. Local and Lithuanian or Volhynian Jews appeared in the Old Warsaw town hall. However, the most important place for official meetings of Warsaw Jews with the Christian community was the court for nobles. It is visible that the first half of the fifteenth century was a unique period with a far-reaching agreement between the Christian inhabitants of Warsaw and its surroundings and the members of the local Jewish community. Within the linguistic area, the communication tools were Polish and German, while Latin, possibly familiar to some Jews, was not a significant communication barrier. Hebrew had its position in the bureaucratic system as well. The protection of the local duke secured a relatively harmonious economic cooperation, which was fostered by the then economic situation of Mazovia. The mid-fifteenth century brought a violent turn, which was influenced by the changes in the political and economic situation, as well as the religious atmosphere. Warsaw burghers started to perceive the Jews as competition, as ‘others’, and began to approach them with growing hostility.

Changes in the occurrence of the initial late blight symptoms have been noted in some regions of Poland. Observations of potato crops showed that occurrence of the primary infections and blight symptoms is sometimes on the stem rather than on the leaves. It was confirmed that in both cases, a cause of late blight was the same species Phytophthora infestans. Surveys of many potato crops done in 1997-1999, around Poland enabled assessment of the incidence of stem blight in Poland. In 1997 - 80.5%, 1998 - 65.2% and in 1999 – 72.4% of observed crops were primary affected with late blight on stems. Stem form of the disease appeared more often in the years with less rainfall in the period from June to July. The largest number of genotypes with initial blight symptoms on stems was observed among first early clones and cultivars. Glasshouse experiments confirmed the importance of stem lesions in decreasing yield and increasing tuber infection. Results confim that blighted tubers were the least probable source of the late blight appearing on stems.

Opis:
The article constitutes a collection of remarks concerning military aspects of the construction and functioning of the Teutonic Order’s castle in Bäslack (Bayselauken, Bezławki) in the last decades of the 14th century. Considerations included in the article refer to opinions expressed by the authors of the collective monograph about the late medieval settlement complex in Bezławki published in 2013. It presents the findings of archeological research in the castle and the village in the years 2008–2012. Remarks presented in the article concern three out of six problems which are considered the most essential. While it goes beyond doubt that the castle played an important defensive role and fulfiled function as a getaway spot, the hypothesis of it being a „fortified camp” for the army troops during military actions of the Teutonic Order against the Lithuanians and Ruthenians has been undermined. It is not possible to consider it to play a military role on a strategic level, as do the authors of the monograph of 2013. In the second part of the article the author undermines the hypothesis about the „system” character of the complexes of fortifications situated on the eastern outskirts of Prussia. If the castle in Bäslack was indeed part of some defensive system, this could operate only on the local level and consist of an insignificant number of elements including longitudinal fortifications constituting the so called „landwere”. The next issue addressed by the author was a problem of the typological character of the term „wildhaus”. As in the 14th century the term connoted the location of the fortification on the edges of the Wildniss-areas, the author shows a far-reaching morphological diversity of fortifications on the eastern outskirts of Prussia, which were or could be classified as „wildhaus”. Thus, a „wildhaus” cannot be classified as a morphological type of a fortification. The typology of fortifications based on the morphological criteria cannot be connected with the typology based on the administrative and terminological criteria. Archeological examination of the Bäslack fortification complex evinces its major cognitive potential and makes us aware of how little is known about the functioning of minor fortifications in late medieval Prussia. Further research in this research field belongs to one of the most important elements of historical science in the Prussian regional dimension and related humanities.

Phosphate nodules of late Burdigalian age are dispersed in a soft, friable packstone matrix within the Irminio Member of the Ragusa Formation. Mineralogical analyses revealed large amounts of calcite (64 to 89 wt. %) and smaller quantities of carbonate-fluorapatite (CFA). P2O5 content was less than 18%. Microtextural observations demonstrated that phosphate precipitation occurred in the microenvironments in the sediment in confined spaces (i.e. cavities, perforations) and not in the shells of microorganisms. The crystals were all of a similarsize (~~1 mm), presented imperfections, and the {0001}CFA and the {1010}CFA forms were clearly apparent. These hexagonal prisms showed reduced growth along their caxis. Our data suggest that bacteria were in volved in the precipitation of CFA.

According to the principles of life-span psychology, development is a lifetime process that lasts from birth to death. It is multi-dimensional in nature and encompasses both progressive and regressive change. The paper focuses on developmental changes typical of the last period of life, and investigates limitations and barriers impeding personal development in the elderly. Personality traits that may prevent positive adaptation to the old age are indicated, together with the opportunities for development in late adulthood and the factors conducive to positive ageing.

Research conducted using Airborne Laser Scanning methods in northern Poland allowed traces of a settlement from almost 2,000 years ago to be registered. The most valuable item found is a copper-alloy scallop shell-shaped plate which is still an unknown object in the cultural realities of the Roman Period in northern Poland. The results of pollen analysis of the material obtained during the cleaning of the found scallop shell-shaped plate indicate the dominance of herbaceous plants over the representation of trees in the vicinity of the archaeological site discussed. The advantage of synanthropic plants among herbaceous plants informs us about the open habitat communities formed as a result of human activity (fields, meadows, roads or ruderal areas).

Relację pomiędzy późnym kapitalizmem a zjawiskiem hazardu cechuje szczególne sprzężenie zwrotne. Z drugiej natomiast strony wybrane aspekty późnego kapitalizmu sprawiają, że on sam coraz bardziej przypomina hazard. Centralne usytuowanie w jego ramach takich kategorii, jak dematerializacja, ryzyko oraz spekulacja sprawiają, że fenomen ten służyć może także jako egzemplifikacja (metafora) późnego kapitalizmu.
The relationship between late capitalism and gambling appears to be a multidimensional connection. On the one hand, late capitalism provides a number of features which support the dynamic development of gambling in the 21st century. The crucial elements are technologisation, globalisation and individualisation. On the other hand, gambling is a metaphor for late capitalism. The basic categories of late capitalism, like dematerialisation, risk or speculation, make it strikingly similar to gambling. They use the same resources, logic and rules. In effect, the analysis of gambling is a useful tool to explore the wider social reality.

Conodonts, a large group of tiny extinct marine animals ranging in age from the Late Cambrian to Late Triassic (ca. 500 to 200 Mya), are usually considered as jawless vertebrates. Their only commonly occurring fossilized remains are minute, phosphatic, teeth−like elements of their feeding apparatuses. In most of the early conodonts the elements were conical and strongly elongated. Many of them are characterized by possession of a deep, longitudinal groove, usually associated with sharp edges or ridges. A comparative study of the grooved elements and venomous teeth and spines of living and extinct vertebrates strongly suggests that the groove in conodonts was also used for delivery of venom. Structural convergence of the conodont apparatus Panderodus with the grasping apparatus of chaetognaths, a group of extant, venomous invertebrate predators of similarly ancient origin, provides additional support for this conclusion.

Correlation of reference sections of these Upper Maeotian deposits within the Rostov Dome results in pattern of the palaeobay transgression, which was punctuated. The relative importance of local and global controls on this trangsression is not yet clear.

In this paper, the author succeeded in correcting specific assertions of particular researchers of the genealogy of the first generations of the Działyński family of the Ogon coat of arms, which in the late Middle Ages became one of the magnate families and maintained its high position in the modern times as well (i.a., the issue of the alleged wife of Chamberlain Piotr of Działyń, the background of the wife of the Słońsk castellan Jan Działyński of Wola and Żałe). The most significant achievement, however, was the correction regarding the genealogy of Mikołaj Działyński, who died in 1491 – the first representative of the family who became a provincial governor and was the forefather of its main line. According to the conducted research, he was most likely not the son of the family’s progenitor, the Dobrzyń chamberlain Piotr (died in 1441–1441), but his grandson. as the father of the provincial governor Mikołaj we identify Mikołaj of Działyń, noted in source texts only once (1442), 22 years before his son’s activity was first recorded in any documents. The Marienburg treasurer (podskarbi) Krzysztof, who also used the Ogon coat of arms, was not, however, as was suggested before, part of the Działyński family; he probably came from an average noble family of the owners (tenutarius?) of the Celina village in the Dobrzyń land.

The aim of this text was to verify the current state of research and broaden the knowledge concerning late medieval tombstones from the area of contemporary Poland. Relatively verified readings of epigraphic inscriptions from three tombstones: one from Siedlnica and two from Żagań, have been read and published in it for the very first time. The tombstone from Siedlnica from 1448 is so far the oldest registered tombstone with a German inscription from the area of the Kingdom of Poland in the period before 1454–1466 (until the incorporation of Prussia). It was already known, but the reading of the inscription’s content was unsatisfactory. A similar verification was carried out in the case of Katharina von Miltitz’s tombstone plate from Żagań dating back to 1479. It was also known to previous researchers of the issue. Whereas, the Jakob Lichtenberg’s tombstone from 1419, developed by us, was introduced into the scientific circulation for the first time. In addition to strictly epigraphic knowledge, a better elaboration of these sources also enriches the knowledge in the field of prosopography and genealogy of people who have been commemorated by them.

The conclusions are reached through a combination of historical and onomastic study, with special regard to the possible meanings of the term Dalmatae and the entities and identities it could have represented.

Opis:
A recently investigated Zechstein Limestone (Ca1, Wuchiapingian) bryozoan fauna from the Polish part of the Southern Permian Basin (SW Poland) is dominated volumetrically and taxonomically by fenestellids. In total six species from five genera are recognized, comprising two species of trepostomes belonging to Dyscritella Girty, 1911 and four fenestellids attributed to Kingopora Morozova, 1970, Kalvariella Morozova, 1970, Acanthocladia King, 1849 and Spinofenestella Termier and Termier, 1971. The greatest biodiversity of the bryozoans in the Ca1 profiles studied is within the slope facies where large, fan-shaped and funnel-shaped reticulate fenestellid colonies up to 10 cm high dominate. In contrast, bryozoans in the marginal (proximal) parts of the basin mostly comprise trepostomes, represented by encrusting plate-like or coil-shaped colonies of Dyscritella Girty, and commonly broken branched colonies of Acanthocladia King. The changes in the biotic composition of the bryozoans and the presence of a dominant colony growth form in the stratigraphical profile of the Ca1 reflect the depositional environment and water energy. These factors stimulate the successive stages of the development of the biota and their settlement, marked by the rich productid-fenestellid assemblages typical of the offshore setting, with the maximum depth in the middle part of the Ca1 in the Grodziec Syncline. The proximal tempestites and foreshore facies of the upper part of the Ca1 (Leszczyna Syncline) terminate the sedimentary cycle of the Ca1, with the remnant, broken bryozoans of Acanthocladia and fenestellids. The relationship between the taxonomic composition, colony growth-patterns, associated biota, and sedimentary structures points to slow sedimentation rate on slope and basin floor of the Ca1 carbonate platform. The fenestellids which are dominated in the studied biota by the reticulate and pinnate colonies of Spinofenestella, Kingopora, Kalvariella and Acanthocladia mark a close palaeogeographical link with the Zechstein (Ca1) bryozoans of Great Britain, Germany and the southern Baltic region.

Background: Intrauterine fetal death is a potential risk in each stage of pregnancy, regardless of the mother’s age. In Poland in 2015, new standards of care were introduced for women with obstetric failure. Aim of the study: This study aimed to analyze intrauterine fetal demise in the context of late motherhood. Material and methods: Medical documentation and a semi-structured interview were used. Case report: A 41-year old primipara in 37 weeks of pregnancy, who had not felt fetal movements for 2 days, was diagnosed with intrauterine fetal demise. The pregnancy was uneventful before, but the patient suffered from hypertension and severe obesity. As a result of induced labor, a male neonate weighing 2260 g, 49 cm long, with no signs of vital functions, was born. After the birth, it was established that the child died due to an umbilical cord accident. The mother was given the appropriate time to see the child for the last time. During delivery and hospitalization, the patient’s privacy was ensured, she was isolated from other women in labor and new mothers and was assisted by her family. During the hospital stay, the patient was under the care of the obstetrician, midwife and clinical psychologist. She was discharged from the hospital after 6 days. Conclusions: The loss of a child is one of the most traumatic experiences for a mother, particularly in the case of older mothers. A woman’s fertility declines with age, so getting pregnant again might prove extremely difficult for older women.

The international order, denoting in a very general sense the manner of the organization and functioning of the international environment in a given period of time, is a dynamic construction that evolves. The feature of the present stage is a transition from its earlier form called the Westphalian order to the future form with qualitatively new features, sometimes called the post-Westphalian order. This process does however mean that the “parameters” of the Westphalian international order are to be replaced by the parameters of the post-Westphalian order. The qualitatively new features of the organization and functioning of the international environment “coexist” with those characteristic of the Westphalian system of international relations. This “coexistence” determines the distinctive feature of the present stage of international relations, which is a hybridity or combining of solutions, often opposing in their logic, relating to the organization and functioning of the international environment. Hence it seems appropriate to term the present stage of dynamics of and change in international relations as the late Westphalian order.

A fragmentary specimen of the diplomoceratid heteromorph Diplomoceras cylindraceum, one of three ammonite markers used for the definition of the base of the Maastrichtian Stage, is recorded from the middle Campanian of the Roztocze Hills, southeast Poland. The new find, well constrained by associated ammonites and inoceramid bivalves, represents the earliest well-dated occurrence of this species worldwide to date. Therefore, the first occurrence (FO) of D. cylindraceum is conspicuously below the traditional base of the Maastrichtian as defined by the FO of the belemnite Belemnella lanceolata. Indeed, this is also far below the boundary designated in the Global Stratotype Section at Tercis les Bains (Landes, France). A comparison of the FOs of D. cylindraceum in sections acrossEurope clearly shows a significant diachroneity, which diminishes its value for definition of the Campanian/Maastrichtian boundary.

Value structure in late childhoodRecent years witnessed an increasing number of studies on adolescents’ and children’s values and value structures that were conceptually based on Schwartz’s (1992) theoretical model. Because of difficulties with the application of established questionnaires to research values among younger and younger persons, efforts were made to create instruments that are suited to adolescents’ and children’s cognitive-developmental background. In this study, 389 children who were between 7 and 12 years old completed one of these recently developed instruments: the Polish adaptation of the Picture-Based Value Survey for Children (PBVS-C), Döring (Döring, Blauensteiner, Aryus, Drögekamp, Bilsky, in press). We examined the presence of Schwartz’s circular structure of values with a theory-based (weakly-confi rmatory) multidimensional scaling (MDS) approach. To further explore potential developmental differences, we conducted additional analyses in two age groups: (1) younger children aged 7 to 9 years (N = 207, grades 1–3), and (2) older children aged 10 to 12 years (N = 182; grades 4–6). Differentiated value structures that were organized in Schwartz’s two basic dimensions (selfenhancement versus self-transcendence, and openness to change versus conservation) emerged in the whole sample and in each of the two age groups. Moreover, we found significant differences in structural complexity between both age groups: as compared to the younger children, the older children’s value structures were more differentiated and closer to the theoretical prototype.

Potato breeders and phytopathologists have been conducting the studies on Phytophthorainfestans (Mont.) de Bary at the Priekuli Plant Breeding Station since 1962. The varietal resistanceis very important in potato breeding programme. The trials in collaboration with the Institute ofPhytopathology of Soviet Union (Russia) were done in 1974-1990. The investigations were focusedon races of P. infestans. The changes of races were assessed using a trap method, according to theinvestigation programme, like in each of the republics of the Soviet Union. At the beginning of investigations (1960s and 1970s) races 1, 4 and 1.4 of P. infestans were thepredominant ones in Latvia, but in the 1980s complex races 4.10.11, 1.4.7.8.10.11, 1.3.4.7.8.10.11and 1.2.3.4.7.8.10.11 were more widely distributed.Different foreign varieties, mostly from the Netherlands, were introduced in Latvia in the 1970s.This resulted in a very rapid differentiation of late blight races. The enhanced aggressiveness of P.infestans isolates was due to an increasing number of races in population. The earlier appearance ofinfection in potato fields was recorded. The presence of a mating type A2 was stated in Latviansamples in 1987. Because all tested races had been recognized in a population, and the conception ofresistance breeding had been modified, the trials were stopped in 1990. The resistance based onspecific resistance genes was the main direction in the 1960s and 1970s. From the 1980s, impor-tance of the field resistance has greatly increased and this type of resistance is the most significantin the current breeding programme. The trials in organic field proved the acceptable level of fieldresistance to P. infestans of three medium late varieties: Sigunda (previous name Undine), Beteand Zile. These varieties have been bred at the Priekuli Plant Breeding Station and included intothe Latvian Plant Varieties Catalogue.

Opis:
New glass finds from the Kom el-Dikka site in Alexandria come from the excavation of Area FW located in the central part of the site. The bulk of the recorded material, made up of conical lamps, beakers and bowls, and poorly fashioned bottles, belongs to the late Roman period (4th–5th century AD). The uniformity in colour, distinctive low quality of the fabric and simple workmanship, all point to a common origin in local workshops covering the needs of the local market. A few pieces, including luxury cast and facet-cut tableware, apparently from a non-local source, represent the late Hellenistic/mid-Roman chronological horizon (2nd century BC–3rd century AD). Meriting note is new evidence of mosaic glass, once again confirming that this type of glass was manufactured in Alexandria in the mid-Roman period. The importance of this assemblage derives from the presence of early Roman luxury tableware which has seldom been observed before at Kom el-Dikka.

In the long history of the land between the Third and Fourth Cataracts on the Nile, the period corresponding to the times of Early Makuria is particularly well represented. The el-Zuma tumuli cemetery has been dated to the Early Makuria Phase II (AD 450–550). Although the graves were heavily robbed, the remains of personal adornments (beads, pendants, rings, and an earring) give a broad overview of materials (marine mollusk shell, coral, ostrich eggshell, stone, metal, faience, glass) and techniques applied in their production. A comparative synopsis of contemporary Nubian adornments shows parallels for the objects from el-Zuma. Moreover, the provenance of the materials and manufacturing techniques suggests el-Zuma’s involvement in regional and longdistance exchange during this period. Finally, the presence of a Christian symbol and imported beads in the el-Zuma tumuli is meaningful in itself.

The paper deals with the morphometric analysis of remains of the reindeer Rangifer tarandus Linnaeus, 1758 from 20 Late Pleistocene cave localities in Poland. In most of the localities, the species was the most abundant component of the large mammal fauna; the remains came from individuals, killed by predators, including man. The measurements of the remains were compared with those of reindeer from localities in Germany, Moldova, Ukraine and Russia. The measurements of the reindeer from Poland were intermediate between the smaller and more slender reindeer from north-western Europe and the larger reindeer from southern and eastern Europe; the antlers from the localities studied mainly represented the tundra form of Rangifer tarandus. The forest form of the species was represented by a few antlers. With respect to the ages of individuals, the reindeer from the Polish sites belonged to the age classes of under 2 years, 5–6 years and 6–7 years.

The incomplete, articulated, right pes of an aetosaur, extracted from the lower bone-bearing horizon of the Krasiejów Late Triassic site, is larger than any other, known from among the Aetosauria. Its individual bones resemble those of at least three genera: Desmatosuchus (astragalus), Typothorax (ungual phalanges), and Stagonolepis (metatarsals). This underscores the highly speculative nature of the taxonomical classification of isolated postcranial bones and makes it impossible to assign the limb to any particular genus. The phalangeal formula is 2-3-4-5-?; for the fifth finger: 2/3/4 is possible. The anatomy of the pes indicates adaptation for digging.

The current demographic processes invite an analysis of the lifestyle of people in late adulthood and its determinants. A thorough diagnosis of senior health is also needed, not only for the purposes of description and explanation, but also – above all – for the creation of health programs. The present study analyses the specificity of health behavior of people of senior age. It describes the Health-Related Behavior Questionnaire for Seniors (KZZ-S), a tool used to measure the health behaviors of seniors (i.e., people aged 60 and above), and presents its theoretical basis. The questionnaire has a five-factor structure, as revealed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. It consists of 24 items and allows the calculation of the overall rate of such health behaviors and behavioral categories as positive attitude to life, behavior related to physical health, attention to mental condition, behavior associated with prevention and treatment, and environmental behavior. A higher score indicates a higher level of behavior beneficial to health. In total, the participants in the study were 522 people diverse in terms of activity and life situation, and the aim was to determine the psychometric properties of the KZZ-S. The KZZ-S is a reliable and valid measure with satisfactory psychometric properties (Cronbach’s α was .87 for the whole test and ranged from .63 to .79 for its subscales; absolute stability determined by test-retest was .88).

To prove his unconventionality and uniqueness I firstly give a detailed analysis of both wedding songs by Dracontius I demonstrate the poet’s dependence upon earlier literature, explain the metaphors he used and discuss his reinterpretations of different themes introduced already by the poets before him. Then I add all my conclusions concerning Dracontius’ originality in comparison with his predecessors.

The most important factors responsible for development of an impressive career of Flavius Stilicho were: his family ties with Theodosians’ dynasty, the way he reorganized the Roman army, military victories, how he drummed up senate’s support for his political aims and the balanced policy of using and stopping the barbarian tribes. Protecting emperor Honorius, cooperating simultaneously with pagan and Christian fractions in the senate, achieving military success and defending borders of the Roman Empire against barbarians raids, Stilicho de facto was reigning the state in the name of his son-in-law, Honorius. Paradoxically, the same factors contributed to the downfall of the master-in-chief in 404-408 A.D. The conflict with his wife, Serena, and his son-in-law, Honorius, the mutiny in the army called-up by the reforms of Stilicho, some disagreements with the senate caused by the case of Melania the Younger and compensation for Alaric and, at last, the invasion of barbarian tribes on Gaul in 406 A.D. destroyed the carefully built career of Flavius Stilicho. He didn’t decide to keep his high rank by triggering off a civil war, what differed him clearly from his followers, Flavius Aetius and Flavius Ricimer.

The latest Givetian-early Frasnian deposits yield a diverse fauna consisting of ten species (two new) included in Desquamatia (Independatrypa), D. (Seratrypa), Pseudoatrypa, Radiatrypa, Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa) and Spinatrypina (Exatrypa). Many of these forms occur in, or are closely similar to species known from, coeval faunas of central and western Canada. Middle Frasnian deposits of northern Iowa contain two species included in Spinatrypa (S.) and Pseudoatrypa, both of which are new. Late Frasnian strata of the Iowa Basin yield eight species included in Costatrypa, Iowatrypa, Pseudoatrypa, and Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa), some of which are widespread in other subtropical and tropical faunas of the western US and western Canada. The taxa Pseudoatrypa witzkei sp. n., Spinatrypa (S.) bunkeri sp. n., Spinatrypa (S.) thompsoni sp. n., and Spinatrypina (Exatrypa) johnsoni sp. n. are proposed. Pseudoatrypa? sp. from the very late Frasnian of southern New Mexico is also illustrated.

Next to the houses three Hyksos graves were found. Archaeological work also revealed houses from the early Eighteenth Dynasty located just above the Hyksos structures in Area 7. Very interesting material came from the late Twentieth Dynasty and Third Intermediate Period houses excavated in Area 9. Rich pottery assemblages mostly of domestic character have been recovered from all of the structures.

In spring 2012 in the area of the village of Krzyżowice, approximately 15 km SW of Wrocław, an accidental discovery of a brooch was made. The brooch’s bow is cast in bronze, while the preserved fragments of the pin and spring were made of iron. Currently, the length of the artefact is 5 cm, but originally it was probably approximately 5.5 cm, because the base which is slightly curved upwards, was initially straight. All similar brooches come from the territory of the Thuringia tribe in the 5th/6th century AD, namely Thuringia and Bohemia. Such a dating places the brooch among the group of artefacts representing the youngest chronological horizon of the Przeworsk cultural area.

Molluscs (oysters and gastropods) of the Late Paleocene Chehel-Kaman Formation, Kopet-Dagh Basin NE Iran were significantly colonized by sclerobionts. The largest area of the shells studied is covered by various borings. The diversity of macro-bioeroding ichnotaxa is rather high, including Gastrochaenolites Leymerie 1842; Maeandropolydora Voigt, 1965; Trypanites Mägdefrau, 1932; Talpina von Hagenow, 1840, and possibly Entobia Bronn, 1837. Some slightly conical borings penetrating the shells could belong to predatory tracemakers of Oichnus Bromley, 1981. Encrusters include calcareous polychaetes, cyclostome and cheilostome bryozoans, foraminifera and oysters. Calcareous sabellids [i.e. Glomerula serpentina (Goldfuss, 1831)] and serpulids are equally common sclerobionts in the association. Bryozoans cover a slightly larger area of the substrate than the calcareous polychaetes, while encrusting oysters are subordinate. The majority of fossils in the hard-substrate community studied belong to suspension feeders. Sclerobionts are typical of the shallow-marine environment, commonly in warm water. The present study is the first attempt to record the occurrence and diversity of epi- and endobionts in the organic substrates, present in the topmost part of the Late Paleocene Chehel-Kaman Formation, Kopet-Dagh Basin, NE Iran.

Opis:
Strontium isotope ratios have been determined on 74 anhydrite samples from seven borehole cores in the Polish Zechstein. Five of the borehole cores are located in the basin and isotope results from these samples show a nearly pure marine signal. Results from one borehole core, located near the Zechstein coastline that migrated through time, record a stronger, in consistent influence of continental strontium to a marine base. Intermittent meteoric influence is recorded in anhydrites from other borehole cores close to the carbonate platform that was emergent during the anhydrite deposition. Consistency of isotope values indicates a marine signal and there is a narrow range in consistent values from 87Sr/86Sr near deltasw –215 (0.70702) for the oldest anhydrites and near deltasw –205 (0.70712) for the youngest an hydrites. Comparison with a sea water 87Sr/86Sr curve based on samples in West Texas and a Permian-Triassic boundary value from China shows that the Polish Zechstein in these seven boreholes is latest Permian in age and major deposition represents a short time interval (~2 million years). Strontium isotope ratios reported by other workers indicate some of the younger Zechstein elsewhere indicate even greater continental influence is in agreement with the interpreted sedimentological set ing for those anhydrites.

Opis:
This paper summarizes geochemical and palaeopedological investigations of the Upper Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequences at the Kolodiiv site. The Kolodiiv 2, 3 and 5 profiles were selected for this study. The Kolodiiv 2 profile contains loesses, interglacial (Eemian) and interstadial (Vistulian) palaeosols. A set of Early Vistulian soils over lying Eemian gyttja and peat is exposed in the Kolodiiv 3 and 5 profiles. The mineral composition of the 50-2 mm silt fraction was analysed using non-oriented powder samples by means of X-ray dif - fraction. The total concentrations of nine major (Si, Ti, Al, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, K and Na) and nine trace elements (Zn, Pb, Ni, Rb, Cr, Sr, Ba, Co, V) as well as the humus content and loss on ignition were measured. The major elements concentrations in mineral deposits from the Kolodiiv 2 loess-palaeosol sequence indicate that the loess particles were derived from poorly weathered source rocks that have under - gone at least one sedimentary cycle. Climatic conditions have strongly in fluenced the mobilization and accumulation of elements in the palaeosol horizons due to the changes in the intensity of weathering and pedogenic processes. For the micromorphological study, ten samples from the Kolodiiv 3 and 5 profiles were used. Thin sections representing the Kolodiiv and Dubno set of palaeosols from Early Vistulian and Middle Pleniglacial show, be sides palaeopedologic characteristics, significant evidence of redeposition of sediments and soils.

Opis:
An Upper Jurassic succession is exposed in the active Rogaszyn Quarry (Kodrąb area) located in the Radomsko Folds structure (central Poland). Six facies types were distinguished, comprising oolitic, oncolitic, biodetrital and pelitic limestones as well as marls and marly clays. Typical lithologies are limestones with coated grains deposited in shall ow-water, fore-shoal, shoal and lagoonal parts of a carbonate ramp. Three types of ooid and three types of oncoid were identified, which display several shapes and sizes, and a complex structure of cortices. The ooid types show micritic, radial-fibrous and mixed, micritic/radial-fibrous cortices. Type 1 oncoids comprise micritic or bioclastic nuclei enveloped by non-laminated or laminated micritic cortices. Type 2 oncoids are composed of micritic or bioclastic nuclei and laminated, fossil-bearing cortices covered by microbial envelopes. Type 3 oncoids are the largest of the oncoids observed, attaining cm-scale dimensions. These oncoids are formed of a Bacinella-dom i nated meshwork incorpo fating smaller ooids and oncoids, or they have bioclastic or micritic nuclei covered by complex cortices with micritic, laminated, fossil-bearing, Bacinella-dominated fabric and microbial envelopes. Boundaries between the specific types of cortical envelopes are usually sharp and accentuated by organic encrustations, elongated bioclasts or borings. Commonly found are chambers of the ichnogenus Entobia representing the boring traces of carbonate-excavating sponges and the cryptoendolithic foraminifer Troglotella incrustants. The complex cortices indicate different growth stages of oncoids at different conditions of currents and microbial activity. Carbonate deposition was accompanied by mixed siliciclastic-carbonate sedimentation resulting in multiple intercalated layers of marls and pelitic limestones as well as marly clays. The deposits exposed in the Rogaszyn Quarry as well as in the Kodrąb area are compared with the neighbouring Upper Jurassic deposits of the Szczerców area and the Sw margin of the Holy Cross Mts. (both central Poland). The successions from the Kodrąb area are generally similar to the Lower Kimmeridgian sequences known from adjacent areas, but with locally observed facies variability.

Elusive tracks of stegosaurs have been long searched for by ichnologists, and various purported stegosaur imprints have recently been reported. A fragmentary trackway of a large, quadrupedal ornithischian dinosaur was found on an isolated slab of Oxfordian dolomite, on the northeastern slope of Holy Cross Mountains, Poland. The track is similar to large, blunt−toed Late Jurassic ichnites from North America. The footprints show a distinctive morphology, which fits the stegosaurian foot. The newly described ichnites from the Upper Jurassic of Poland provide the second ichnological evidence of the Late Jurassic dinosaurs in this country; numerous rich dinosaur footprint assemblages were previously known only from the Lower Jurassic outcrops.

Communication problems are often the first noticeable symptom of developmental abnormalities. About 15% of children at the age of 2 years demonstrate a lower level of speech expression than their peers. Speech development disorders may constitute either symptoms of global developmental delay or only isolated difficulties. One of the main challenges for professionals dealing with early development support is recognizing whether a child whose linguistic competence differs significantly from that of their peers suffers from a specific language impairment, or whether they belong to the group of ‘late bloomers’ who at some point, without the intervention of a specialist, will achieve an appropriate level of communication skills. Although a differential diagnosis can be extremely difficult, the analysis of the literature leads to the conclusion that there are some markers that can aid a specialist in establishing an accurate diagnosis.

In patients with dyspeptic symptoms who have been treated for gastric cancer, other medical conditions apart from cancer recurrence should be considered. A long small-bowel loop left after esophagogastric anastomosis, flaccid diaphragmatic crura, and several external factors such as hard physical exertion can promote the development of postoperative hiatus hernia. The authors of this paper present a rare case of hiatus hernia considered a late complication of primary surgery performed due to gastric cancer. The 63-year-old patient had undergone total gastrectomy with double tract reconstruction (DTR) six years earlier. Gastrectomy was performed with extended lymphadenectomy (>D2). Histopathologic examination of tumor specimens showed mucinous adenocarcinoma with no lymph node metastasis and no distant metastases (pathologic staging: pT2, pN0, pM0). After six years, the patient was admitted to the 2nd Department of General and Gastroenterologic Surgery with abdominal pains, malaise, weight loss and feeling of fullness after small meals. Diagnostic procedures performed showed the presence of hiatus hernia, a very rare complication after this particular surgery, with no features of cancer recurrence. The patient was underwent surgery and the hernia was successfully repaired.

Health behaviour in early and late adulthood – educational and behavioural aspectsNumerous transformations occurring in contemporary world concern also health and related behaviour. Increasing adaptive and preventive activities of individuals are becoming essential. New educational curricula introduce issues related to health, behaviour and healthy life styles. The research problem presented in the article concerns health behaviour of people in early (390 respondents) and late adulthood (117 respondents). The respondents were students of the Academy of Physical Education or pedagogy, and a fraction of elderly people consisted of students of the University of the Third Age (numbering 63). Our research aimed to compare prohealth activity among the respondents in order to answer the following questions: what the extent of their health activity is and whether health education is refl ected in behaviour. G. Dolińska’s Health Behaviour Survey and Inventory was employed. The research conducted confirmed the existence of significant differences among the respondents. The differences include both the intensity of behaviour and a predominance of certain types. The respondents exhibit an average level of health behaviour, although its increased intensity has been observed in late adulthood, especially among the students of the University of the Third Age. Also the students of health education yielded higher results than the remaining early adults.

This work discusses the issue of bracelets occurring in the Sarmatian period in the Crimea, known in archaeological literature as “bracelets with globular, conical, or pineal-shaped endings”. Basing on a group of 57 artefacts from Late Scythian and Sarmatian necropolises, as well as those dated to the Late Roman period, a typological classification of the items has been made. At the same time, on the basis of the chronological analysis of sets containing bracelets belonging to the discussed type, data allowing us to determine their chronological range have been obtained. The question of the provenance of such items, the issue of their occurrences in graves (taking into account the sexes of the buried persons), as well as the methods of wearing them, have been discussed.

Barnacle borings were found in six heterocoral skeletons. They are present as small (up to 2.9 mm long), slender, pouch-shaped borings with tapering, slit-like openings. The investigated borings were made by acrothoracican cirripedes, which mostly do not have a shell and bore into hard substrates to protect their “naked” bodies. The first occurrence of borings in skeletons of the heterocoral Oligophylloides Różkowska, 1969 from the Upper Devonian Tafilalt Platform was reported recently by Weyer in 2016. Here, the authors present the results of a detailed study of heterocoral remains with numerous acrothoracican borings from Jebel Bou Ifarherioun (Famennian, Anti-Atlas, Morocco). The borings were found on the basal part but also on broken branches and stems of the heterocoral corallum and occurred post mortem. There is no indication of a syn vivo coral-barnacle interaction with borings in tissue-covered areas. The authors used micro-CT scans to visualize the 3D morphology of the pits, their orientation, and distribution. Additionally, the 3D morphology of an assemblage of 75 pits was used to carry out ordination and cluster analyses, which showed that previously proposed ichnospecies may be a continuum of morphological variability. In the basis of measurements by the present authors, the studied borings do not fit any known ichnotaxa. The absence of bourrelets excludes the possibility that the borings studied belong to the ichnogenus Rogerella Saint-Seine, 1951. Hence, the results seem to contradict a synonymization that was proposed by Bromley and D’Alessandro (1987) and subsequent authors and leave room for further research and discussion on this topic. Although the inferred boring organism is a filter feeder and, thus, depends on currents, the authors did not find a preferential orientation of the borings. The samples considered here are the best-preserved Devonian barnacle borings to date.

This hypothesis has already been critiqued in the “Zapiski Historyczne”, where in this text a detailed analysis of the summer Lithuanian campaign of 1402, during which time the castle was supposed to play the aforementioned role, which was to be assigned by the Teutonic Order for the campaign associated with Prince Bolesław Świdrygiełło (lit. Meanwhile, this analysis indicated that none of the Order’s troops during the aforementioned campaign from Bezławki gathered the re, nor did they leave from there, nor did they pass through, and the decision to transfer the lease of the fortification to the Lithuanian prince was taken after the expedition, with the arrival of the prince taking place no earlier than in the second half of October 1402.

The glass material from PCMA excavations at the Kom el-Dikka site in Alexandria in the 2012 and 2013 seasons consisted mainly of a late Roman/early Byzantine assemblage, mostly yellowish-green blown glass characterized by a homogeneity of the fabric, a limited variety of vessel types and simple workmanship, all indicative of a local glasshouse most likely operating at the site. Fragments of early and late Roman mosaic glass were also an important element of the set. Excavations in area U (sub-area US) also yielded a handful of late Hellenistic/early Roman glasses: various types of cast bowls seldom previously reported from Kom el-Dikka, a linear-cut bowl, monochrome patella, and colorless bowl with broad rim and overhung edge. The assemblage coming from area G (basement of the late Roman baths) comprised late Roman free-blown, utilitarian wares representing a limited range of forms. Also found in this area was cast glass of the late Hellenistic/early Roman period: mosaic glass and a grooved bowl, the latter recorded for the first time at Kom el-Dikka.

Opis:
The production of flint projectile points in the late stage of the Neman culture shows certain elements which are clearly similar in terms of technology and typology to the solutions known from flint-working of the people representing the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age cultures. The occurrence of such features has already been presented in relation to Neman culture ceramic production which lies at the heart of the concept of separating horizons within Linin type complexes. An in-depth analysis of the techno-typological features of flintworking in the Neman culture, and especially the typological category of projectile points, reveals similar patterns as well as cultural and chronological references in the case of ceramics. The most striking elements show analogies to those known from the south-eastern area of the cultural groupings influenced by impulses flowing from the civilization centres of the time. Traces of these influences are clear in certain typological and technological solutions, such as the forms of triangular projectile points, or in applying a trough-like retouch on such points. At the current stage of research, it is hard to determine whether the analogies observed result from not yet recognised intercultural contacts, or rather constitute a certain signum temporis characteristic of production in a wider area but during a single, specific chronological interval.

Religious poetry of the Saxon times has often in the past prompted quite radical, and at the same time emotional, valuations coming from scholars. Its distinctness from the literature of the preceding periods was also frequently underscored. The present article attempts to expand upon the issue of novelty and unique features of the works by late Baroque religious poets (Stanisław Brzeżański, Franciszek Gniewisz, Karol Mikołaj Juniewicz, Hieronin Falęcki, and Józef Baka). What is assumed to have been characteristic of the said literature is the endeavour at maximal persuasive efficacy and presence of deep internal tensions between christianitas and humanitas.

The article introduces the most important philosophical and musicological contexts of Jakub Momro’s book The ear has no eyelid. Sonic primordial scenes. The author of the book places the music and sonic practices of late modernity into an extensive network of philosophical concepts, especially those related to the philosophy of deconstruction and psychoanalysis. In this way he shows the relationship between music and the issues of time, voice, materiality and corporeality, sound and vision, freedom and determinism, trauma and desire. The text also includes a reconstruction of some theses on the ephemeral and performative nature of sound and on listening as the domain of freedom. At the end conclusions are presented about the importance of the book in the context of contemporary musical thought.

Kopanica, site 29, is situated on the eastern edge of a former glacial trough, which now channels the Obra River north, and the latitudinal Warsaw-Berlin ice marginal valley. 2003 archaeological excavations at the site revealed evidence of intensive Late Mesolithic settlement. Trenches located on the sandy and gravel fluvial terrace of the Obra and in the zone of biogenic sediments yielded a substantial flint assemblage and remains of a dwelling structure sunken into the ground. The structure was radiocarbon dated owing to a fragment of a burnt animal bone from the fill deposit. The radiocarbon date coincides with the results of technological and typological analyses of the flint inventory. The Mesolithic settlement at the site can accordingly be attributed to a stay of a group representing the Chojnice–Pieńków (post-Maglemose) culture in the second half of the Atlantic period.

The relationship between tree-ring growth and climate in Quercus brantii, a widespread and dominant tree species in Zagros-Anti-Taurus Mountains, was investigated by both age-dependent and independent approaches. A total number of 118 trees were sampled in a region where severe Mediterranean climate prevailed. An overall chronology plus three age-dependent chronologies of <80, 80 to 160 and >160 years old were constructed to study growth-climate relationships based on an integrated approach of principle component stepwise regression followed by complementary response function analysis. High age heterogeneity of overall chronology diminished its climatic signals and growth priority was significantly presented in the models. Biennial and triennial precipitation variations were highly related with annual tree ring growth of young and old oaks, respectively. However, hot growing season negatively affected all age-dependent chronology indices. By increasing tree ages the negative effects of warm autumn prior to growth decreased and late winter fall became a limiting climatic factor in old trees. Results of response function analysis also revealed that all oak trees from each age classes were sensitive to increasing April temperature. It’s anticipated that, regarding the trends of late frost, this species will face with many challenges in this region and similar areas.

Accumulation of sediments in the lake basins of the Starogard Lakeland, Northern Poland, an area which was entirely ice-covered during the last glaciation, started at different times, beginning during the Late Glacial. Sedimentation continued till the beginning of the Holocene (Preboreal). The principal factor causing the asynchronous start of the lake development was the variation in melting processes of buried dead-ice blocks. The preservation of dead-ice masses in some depressions until the Preboreal leads to the conclusion that the ultimate disappearance of permafrost in the study area occurred only at the beginning of the Holocene.

Detailed geological and palaeobotanical study of about 400 boreholes through Quaternary deposits in eastern Belarus has enabled the recognition of a number of Middle and Late Pleistocene interglacial sites and demonstrated the stratigraphical position of Alexandrian (Holsteinian) and Muravian (Eemian) Interglacial sediments. These stratigraphic markers are separated by a single glacial sequence, corresponding to the Dnieper (Saalian) Glaciation. This contradicts previous views suggesting the occurrence of two glaciations during the Late Middle Pleistocene in eastern Belarus (Dnieper and Sozh). The glacial sediments represent the recession phases of a glacial stage that may be correlated with the Drenthe Substage of the Saalian Glaciation.

The relatively rich assemblages of shark teeth from pelagic limestone (Mississippian, late Viséan, late Asbian-middle Brigantian) of three northern European regions: the Rhenish Mountains (Westenfeld Quarry, Germany), the Holy Cross Mountains (Todowa Grząba at the edge of Ostrówka Quarry, Poland), and Derbyshire (Cawdor Quarry, Matlock, England, UK) display certain similarities, with the absolute predominance of the teeth of Falcatidae (small Symmoriiformes) and the constant presence of Thrinacodus spp. The largest and most diverse assemblage from Todowa Grząba contains at least three species of a falcatid Denaea, a xenacanthimorph Bransonella nebraskensis, a newly described phoebodontid Thrinacodus dziki sp. nov., a few ctenacanthiform and euselachian teeth, and two abraded euchondrocephalan dental elements. Anachronistidae, common in the most of late Viséan pelagic faunas, are absent from Todowa Grząba and Westenfeld. The material under study differs from the shallow-water chondrichthyan fauna, hitherto described from the Mississippian carbonate platform facies, by its taxonomic content (particularly almost total absence of Euchondro-cephali), generally lower diversity, and higher frequency of small teeth.

Opis:
A sinkhole, developed in Middle Triassic limestones and filled with clastic and organic deposits, including lignite, was studied, in terms of its origin and age. The sinkhole represents a solution sinkhole, which originated through the subsidence of surficial deposits into an underlying cave system. The study permitted the recognition of three main stages of sinkhole evolution. During the initial stage, subterranean and surface karstification proceeded concurrently. As a result, a terra rossa cover developed at the surface and a cavern system was formed in the underlying bedrocks. During the second phase, both systems became connected and the soil cover subsided. This, in turn, involved the formation of a depression at the land surface and ponding of the drainage water. The pond was filled with plant debris, later giving rise to lignite formation. During the third and final stage, the sinkhole was filled with quartz sands with kaolinite, derived from eroded, Upper Cretaceous sandstones and marls. Results of pollen analysis from the sinkhole indicate the presence of mesophytic forests and show a significant role of riparian forests and herbaceous vegetation. The occurrence of abundant, freshwater algae and the pollen of aquatic plants evidences sedimentation of the infill in a water body (pond). The apparent dominance of arctotertiary and cosmopolitan, palaeofloristical elements, as well as the occurrence of only sparse, palaeotropical elements (mainly subtropical), indicate a warm-temperate climate (cooler than during the Early and Middle Miocene period). A comparison of the sporomorph association from the sinkhole with those from other Neogene sites provides evidence of its Late Miocene age (Late Pannonian–Early Pontian).

The article aims at discussing the current state of Polish Late Modern architecture through the categories of its state of preservation which are discussed as based on synthetic case studies. Starting from the spectacular demolitions of the two outstanding works of post-war architecture (Katowice railway station and the ‘Supersam’ supermarket in Warsaw) through a hiatus of the lack of use, to conservations and conversions (re-uses) it shows the process of growing of the consciousness of value of such an architecture. The essay briefly mentions actions of the Association of Polish Architects in the field. At the same time the article shows the main dilemmas of conservation – between petrifying (which is often counterproductive) and reconstruction and transformation. It also attempts at answering the question of the ultima ratio of protection of the architecture of that period.

A new Late Jurassic ophthalmosaurid ichthyosaur Cryopterygius kielanae sp. nov. is described from carbonate deposits of Owadów-Brzezinki Quarry, Central Poland, corresponding in age to the Agardhfjellet Formation (Tithonian, Middle Volgian) of the Svalbard Archipelago. The new species is represented by three-dimensionally preserved bones which display several features characteristic for Cryopterygius; including appendicular skeleton, pectoral girdle and perhaps neural arches. The morphology of the Polish form is distinct enough from Cryopterygius kristiansenae from the Svalbard Archipelago to warrant erection of a new species. The size of the bones of Cryopterygius kielanae sp. nov. indicates that this species was smaller than the type species. Its diagnostic anatomical features include a humerus with prominent and well developed dorsal process located in the middle of the dorsal surface of the bone, prominent deltopectoral crest, relatively broad femur and absence of the wide groove on the quadrate articular condyle. The discovery of a new ophthalmosaurid ichthyosaur of the genus Cryopterygius in Poland suggests that the Owadów-Brzezinki area was a transition zone between the tropical Tethys Ocean and the Arctic basin during the Late Jurassic.

The richly illustrated 13th century Seljuk manuscript Varqa and Gulshah from Azerbaijan provides a number of lavish miniatures, some depicting armored warriors riding horses covered with richly decorated caparisons. The illustrations show that the long caparisons were multi-layered, an indication that they were designed to provide offer some protection for the mounts. Despite the scholars’ opposing opinions, the author maintains that caparisons were well established in Islamic armies as attested by literary sources and iconography. Moreover, the existence of rich terminology concerning different types of horse armor clearly evidences the relative popularity of horse protection. Although the bardings had been were known in by various cultures for in the millennia before the Seljuks, however, the direct inspiration for the appearance of caparisons at that time should must be associated with the Sasanian tradition. Furthermore, the article discusses protective properties qualities of caparisons in which these were provided in a variety of fashions. Firstly, protection was provided could be afforded simply by padding consisting of using a number of textile layers. For instance, metallic armor such as maille or leather armor such as lamellar could have been were stitched into the padded or fabric barding. The – the former is attested in the Islamic world but can be traced back to earlier Iranian traditions.; The evidence for the latter type comes is evidenced from Firuzabad reliefs. However, scattered metal plates attached to the caparisons in random patterns, do not seem to have had any protective function; value they and were merely a the part of decoration. Post-Sasanian origin of Seljuk protective caparisons should be found well evidenced and most probable.

The purpose of this article is to analyse an anonymous homily written in ninth century northern Italy. Linguistic analysis of the text strongly supports the hypothesis that this example and similar texts would have been understood by listeners of the era when read aloud. This comprehensibility is ensured above all by the fact that the Latin vocabulary and morpho-syntax of this text are based not only on the classical norm but on the late and patristic norms. Even if the listeners had only passive competence of the language, this proves that Latin was still widely understood in the ninth century.

Recent excavations by a Polish–Lebanese archaeological project confirmed the presence of mosaic floors, mainly in the Domestic Quarter. Technological analyses coupled with a study of the decoration and iconographical motifs have shed light on mosaic craftsmanship in Jiyeh. The mosaics from the Domestic Quarter in Jiyeh are discussed in comparison with well-known examples from nearby sites.

The effective management of protection against Phytophthora infestans must be established on the perfect knowledge of the pathogen. From a practical point of view this means identification of races and mating types as well as the pathotypes resistant to systemic compounds of fungicides. The main goal of our project was to characterize populations of late blight, especially in the most important area of seed potato production. Recognition of races and mating types and evaluation of resistance to metalaxyl of the isolates in potato-growing area were performed in laboratory tests. Isolates of late blight for laboratory tests were collected in commercial and research potato crops in the regions of Poprad and Kežmarok. The first occurrence of metalaxyl-resistant strains was noticed in 1999, and the greatest incidence was recorded in 2000. In the following years a significant decrease was observed. This was due, among others, to omitting fenylamide fungicides in crop protection in our region. The occurrence of isolates virulent to potato with R2, R5, R9 and R11 genes was noted neither in 1996 nor in 1997, and tested isolates had maximum six virulence factors. Since 1999, the occurrence of isolates with seven, eight or even ten virulence factors has been recorded. Presence of A2 mating type was not confirmed in our area until 2002. In 2003, more A2 than A1 isolates were found. It is likely that problems concerning the ability of oospores to survive in soil as well as sexual reproduction of the pathogen may appear also in our potato-growing area.

Opis:
Orozjusz w Historia adversus paganos, opisując chorobę i śmierć cesarza Galeriusza, przypisał mu popełnienie samobójstwa.
Orosius describing in the Historia against pagans illness and death of Emperor Galerius claimed that they were the result of a suicide attempt. No other source confirms this fact, including works used by Orosius, which either very briefly informs about the death of the ruler (Breviarium of Eutropius, Chronicon of Jerome), or does not mention it at all (Church History of Rufin of Aquileia). Probably the ruler's suicide was an invention of Orosius, who could think that this is how the enemy of God and Christianity should die. In the Bible, suicide is shown negatively and was most likely condemned by the Fathers of the Church.

The article analyzes certain early Byzantine hagiographic texts concerning various forms of brigandage (both maritime and land-based). Two such accounts are studied in detail, one by Gerontius of Jerusalem and another by Theodoret of Cyrus. The instances described unveil the weakness of Roman state structures at the borders of the state as well as in lands harassed by barbarian raids, including piracy. Despite certain flaws (mostly the lack of precision), the accounts under discussion constitute valuable and reliable sources of historical knowledge.

We describe the new foraminiferal genus and species Plectoeratidus subarcticus n.gen. n.sp., from the Upper Cretaceous deep-water deposits of the Kviting and Kveite formations in the western Barents Sea. The genus is characterised by its planispiral-biserial-uniserial chamber arrangement, terminal aperture and lateral compre- ssion. The biometric analysis of test ontogenesis has been applied to document its dimorphism attributed to megalospheric and microspheric generations. This taxon may represent an evolutionary transition between the Cretaceous genera Spiroplectammina or Bolivinopsis and the Cenozoic genus Eratidus. The taxon appears to be endemic to the flysch-type agglutinated foraminiferal assemblages in the Norwegian Sea area.

Opis:
The Triassic Fatricum basin studied in the Belanské Tatry Mts. (Slovakia) was a relatively stable and restricted platform area influenced by eustatic and climatic fluctuations. During the early Triassic the platform was influenced by continental clastic sedimentation intermittent with shallow marine transgressions when carbonate sediments formed. Common occurrence of carbonized plat debris suggests relatively humid climatic conditions dominating during this interval (Werfenian facies). Significant climate aridisation was concurrent with the beginning of the Middle Triassic transgression as indicated by evaporitic fabrics common within the entire Middle Triassic carbonate succession. The Middle Triassic has been divided into several lithofacies complexes reflecting the interplays between the eustatic and climatic fluctuations. The lower Middle Triassic complex (lower-middle Anisian?) displays dominance of calcareous sediments indicating free communication with the open ocean. The subsequent intervals are rather uniform facies assemblage composed by dolomites and evaporites formed in a restricted and stagnant basin. The basin has been strongly influenced by subtropical storms, particularly common in the late Anisian. Transgression pulse in the early Ladinian involved growth of microbial colonies building thrombolitic biostromes. Final shallowing by the end of Ladinian led to replacement of carbonate sediments by continental clastics of the Carpathian Keuper. These sediments, mostly of alluvial nature, comprise plant debris what suggests climate pluvialisation in Carnian times.

Cypriot economics
Late Classical/Early Hellenistic Periods

Opis:
The turn of the 4th and 3rd century B.C. is the time of great political and economical change in Cyprus. The extensive analysis of various literary and historical sources supplemented by the ceramic data allows us to present the economic system of Cyprus as characterized by the following features at the turn of the Classical and Hellenistic periods: (1) the primary role of port cities; (2) a significant role of cabotage trade; (3) the division of the island into the "rich" coast, which participated in the Mediterranean "life" and the “poor” interior reduced to the role of the raw material base; (4) the existence of two parallel economic cycles: closed, internal cycle associated with what we might call "household economy", and the open cycle, connected with regular urban markets; (5) the limited movement of resources between port cites and inland settlements; (6) the basic role of Cypriot sanctuaries, which functioned as local centres of economic life (e.g. "industrial" production); (7) the autarkic nature of these Cypriot kingdoms which had direct access to the sea; (10) the “life” of the economic system of Cyprus was defined by the half-year cycle. Furthermore, in terms of transformation of the system, we might conclude that: (1) at the turn of the 4th and 3rd century B.C. there is no visible significant break in the development of the economic structure of Cyprus. It appears that the economic transformation was not a drastic process; (2) the changes that occurred in the economic structure of Cyprus influenced mostly the large coastal cities that were the local centres of the system; (3) in the sphere of internal relations, the final division of Cyprus into the western isolated part and economically well-developed eastern part vanished. From the methodological point of view the collected observations allowed to conclude that every economic system can be studied in view of its structure – the relationship between and the configuration of its items. One can also focus attention on the (self)development of the system, or on the phenomenon of coordination (in time and space) of behaviour of individual/groups of variables. Nevertheless, in this research, particular emphasis was placed on the process of development of the system and the problem of its discontinuation in relation to the evolution of variables relevant for its structure. The author focused on the processes of transformation and dynamic nature immanent to all systems. This is due to the author’s general conviction about the artificiality of divisions in the post-Droysen world, which marks sharp boundaries between "Classical" and "Hellenistic" periods.

The Pułtusk H chondritic breccia records a complex impact history and contains various products of impact metamorphism. Here, impact melt lithology is described, which is embedded into the Pułtusk breccia. The impact melt clast is formed by microcrystalline quenched silicates and metal-troilite globules and chondritic relicts are retained in the melt. The relicts record strong shock deformation, S4–S5 and they have well developed foliated fabric of metal grains. The melt formed by severe collision and impact melting on the parent body. The chondritic material was superheated and molten. Silicate melt unmixed from the metal-sulphide melt and both were rapidly quenched. Most likely the event occurred during Late Heavy Bombardment, ~3.6 Ga.

Opis:
During many years’ research, the stratigraphy of Quaternary deposits in the area surrounding Konin has elaborated. In the young Quaternary strata the Eemian fossil lakeland was established and the exposed Mikorzyn section was found. Previous geological and palynological analyses of the site prove a nearly complete sequence of Eemian and Vistulian deposits. Furthermore, archival records of drill cores indicate that older interglacial sediments may also have been deposited about 10 metres deeper in this particular area. To test this possibility, a relatively deep test borehole—Mikorzyn 1 was carried out in the distance about 70 metres only. The sedimentological and palynological core analyses prove the Eemian age of examined organic materials. The borehole, established only the presence of ca.10 m offset in the bottom part of the Eemian strata. This fact, as well as other faults and Tertiary coal injections into glacial sediments, confirmed the occurrence of neotectonic activity.

New 40Ar-39 Ar isotope ages of mafic and felsic rocks from the contact zone of the Malopolska and Brunovistulian terranes are presented and discussed. A 40Ar-39 Ar age estimation of detrital muscovite from a Lower Devonian "old red" type sandstone drilled on the Malopolska side of this zone was also done. Our studies reveal that three events of Paleozoic magmatic activity took place in the study area. The oldest, late Emsian episode is recorded by a diorite from the core part of an intrusion penetrated by the Sosnowiec IG 1 borehole. A younger, Visean event is documented by a diabase cored in the borehole WB-137. Diabases from Niedwiedzia Góra and from borehole PZ-10, and a rhyodacite from borehole 16-WB gave early Permian (Artinskian-early Sakmarian) ages. The youngest, middle Sakmarian age was obtained for a diabase forming the external parts of the Sosnowiec IG 1 polycyclic intrusion. A diorite penetrated by the Sosnowiec IG 1 borehole was emplaced during the late Emsian extension that preceded the Lochkovian-Pragian? transpression related to the final docking and amalgamation of the Brunovistulian Terrane.

Opis:
The Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary in Central Iran has been investigated on the basis of conodont faunas (34 species and subspecies) from four sections: Chahriseh near Esfahan, and Kal-e-Sardar, Howz-e-Dorah and Ghale-Kalaghu near Tabas. The F-F boundary in the Chahriseh section is located in a one-metre interval between beds EX1 and F-F9 whereas in the Kal-e-Sardar section it is at the base of bed Cly1. The F-F boundary can not be recognized in the Howz-e-Dorah and Ghale-Kalaghu sections be cause of uncon form able relation ships and erosion of the upper most late Frasnian beds indicated incidentally by reworked boulders (indicating con temporaneous tectonic activity) and by the abrupt appearance of contrasting environments, including tempestites at the base of the lower Famennian. The best conodont and palaeoenvironmental data were obtained from the Kal-e-Sardar section where a deeper marine environment prevailed during the late Frasnian, be coming shallower in the early Famennian; the Chahriseh section displays small fluctuations in sea level during the early Famennian. The conodont faunas display the inception of the Polygnathus communis group in the late Frasnian (rhenana-linguiformis zones) and the appearance of Icriodus alternatus mawsonae in the Late rhenana Zone. A new age-range is suggested for Polygnathus aequalis Klapper and Lane, from the transitans to the linguiformis zones. Three conodont biozones are represented in the late Frasnian to early Famennian of the Chahriseh section, two late Frasnian and one early Famennian in the Kal-e-Sardar section and two biozones in the late Frasnian and early Famennian of both the Howz-e-Dorah and Ghale-Kalaghu sections. Two new species are described: Polygnathus tabasianus (Early to Late crepida zones) and Polygnathus vachiki (Late rhenana-linguiformis zones).
