The paper compares the properties of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) wood from stands growing in the lower and upper subalpine forest zone in terms of the tree−ring width, the share of latewood and the wood density. The investigation concerned material originating from plots established within the boundaries of the south−western incidence of spruce in Poland. Plots were located in the Sudety Mts. and in the Carpathians (tab. 1). On each plot fifteen Norway spruces were chosen and increment cores were sampled using the Pressler borer. The surface of the cores was smoothed and the tree−ring width was measured. The latewood zones were determined and the share of latewood was calculated. Then, the cores were divided into 2 cm sections, for which the relative wood density was determined. Tree−rings were wider in trees growing in the lower when compared with those from the upper subalpine forest zone (tab. 2). Weak negative correlation was revealed between the elevation and the tree−ring width (r=–0.308). The latewood share was slightly higher in trees from the upper than those from the lower subalpine forest zone (tab. 2). However, no statistically significant correlation between the latewood share and elevation was recorded. The wood density was slightly lower in trees from the lower than those from the upper subalpine forest zone (tab. 2), but the difference was not statistically significant. The correlation between the wood density and the elevation turned out to be insignificant.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine whether differences exist between the selected characteristics of Norway spruce cones and seeds depending on their location in the crown. The study was performed in two spruce tree stands growing under mountainous conditions (the Beskidy Mountains, southern Poland). In winter 2015, the cones were collected from 60 standing trees located in the two selected seed stands – Ujsoły and Rycerka. From each tree, the cones were collected from three crown zones: top, central and bottom differing in terms of light conditions. Two characteristics of the cones and six characteristics of the seeds were analysed. To determine quantitative and qualitative traits of seeds standard methods for seed testing were applied. Significant differences between the populations were determined for cone weight and fraction of full seeds, weight of 1000 seeds and germination capacity. The crown zones differed significantly in terms of fraction of cones in the parts of the crown and mass of one cone as well as weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy and germination capacity. Moreover, a significant intra−population variation was observed for a majority of the analysed characteristics (fraction of full seeds, weight of one cone, weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy, and germination capacity). However, no statistically significant interaction between population and crown zone was observed. A significantly lower contribution of cones in the bottom zone of the crown may affect the economic viability of the commercial harvest. On the other hand some of the important seeds traits (e.g. weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy and germination capacity) were significantly better in the bottom and central part of the crown than in the top zone. There are no justified circumstances (both qualitative and quantitative) to perform the cone harvest only from the top zone of the crown.

Opis:
Like in the Beskid Śląski and Żywiecki Mts., the dieback of Norway spruce stands takes place also in the Beskid Mały range. This process is clearly more intensive and occurs over a longer period of time. The conversion of these forests during the study period (2004−2016) resulted in a significant increase in the proportion of beech and fir as well as other, mostly deciduous tree species (tab. 1). The dieback of spruce forests is likely to continue, as the share of spruce in some forest complexes is still high. The age class structure of forests during the study period was found to have a negative effect on the stability and uniformity of forest growth – the young stands fraction was too low and decreased (tab. 3). The high average age of stands, which increased from 67 in 2007 to 71 years in 2016 was also unfavourable. The volume of harvested timber was rather high and approximated to the volume of allowable cut determined by the stand growth model (so−called model volume) (figs. 1, 2). In the Andrychów Forest District the harvested volume was significantly lower than the model volume, while in Jeleśnia and Bielsko districts it was significantly higher, which results from higher proportion of spruce in these regions. In the harvested timber structure, the share of wind−broken and wind fallen trees was about 10%, which is not high for the mountain area (fig. 3). The exception was in year 2005, when timber removals after the hurricane of November 2004 were estimated at more than 30%. In 2006−2008, the volume of deadwood was high and consisted mainly of spruce (fig. 4). Then the dieback of spruce forests decreased and was observed predominantly in the western and southern parts of the forest complex. The years 2013−2016 saw a high share of live trees in the harvested timber volume (over 80% of the model volume) (fig. 5). In some parts of the Beskid Mały forests, the harvest of live trees exceeded 300% of the model volume. Such high harvest is justified by the need of urgent silvicultural tasks to be carried out, especially stand conversion. The threat to the Beskid Mały forests from wind is high and remained at the same level throughout the study period – the threat measure Ms was ca. 33 (fig. 6). It is essential to lower the level of threat to these forests by, inter alia, increasing the area of young stands.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to analyse (on the basis of the data from the State Forests Information System) the changes occurring in the Bieszczady forests in the period of 2007−2016. One of the processes taking place in the study area is the withdrawal of grey alder stands and the appear− ance of natural regeneration of mainly beech and fir, and in a smaller proportion spruce (fig. 1). Another natural process is the encroachment of fir and beech under the canopy of pine stands, which is favoured by fertile habitats that meet the ecological requirements of these two tree species. As a result of economic activity supporting these processes, alder and pine stands are being rebuilt relatively quickly, turning into fir or beech stands, and sometimes into mixed stands with the participation of other tree species, including spruce (fig. 1). The decline of spruce stands occurs on the dominant area in Poland: in Beskid Śląski and Beskid Żywiecki, the Kaszuby Forest or the Białowieża Forest. The main causes of this process are abiotic and biotic factors, including frequent droughts causing the lowering of the groundwater level and insect outbreaks, especially of bark beetles. The proportion of spruce in the Bieszczady Mountains is relatively small (about 10%), and the high fertility of the habitats compensates, to some extent, the relatively high moisture requirements of this tree species and probably these factors determined the lack of decline of spruce stands in the analysed area. In the last 10 years, the average age of forests in the Bieszczady Mountains increased from 77 to 83 years (tab. 2), mainly as a result of too low volume of harvested timber (fig. 3). Comparing the total harvested volume with the volume of allowable cut determined by the stand growth model, the harvest of the wood raw material was understated by about 25%. The aging of forests is also confirmed by changes in stands in age classes (fig. 2). The aging of the Bieszczady forests is correlated with the process of increasing the threat to these forests by wind (figs. 4−5). The wind damage risk factor increased over the next 10 years in the two highest threat level, and thus the area of threatened stands increased. The forest threat measure in the Bieszczady forests increased in general as well as in individual forest districts (fig. 6). The forests in two of these districts are currently among the most threatened in Poland.

A monitoring network was set up in 2002 in order to define the distribution range of Ips duplicatus in mountain Norway spruce stands in southern Poland. Borregard pipe traps baited with synthetic pheromone Duplodor (Chemipan, Poland) were installed on 70 locations situated above 600 m a.s.l. in Carpathians and Sudeten. The occurrence of I. duplicatus was confirmed in 17 locations in the western part of Carpathians, including those located around 1000 m a.s.l., while no beetles were caught in the eastern Carpathians nor in the Sudeten. The distribution range in Polish mountains is adjacent to those in northern Slovakia and northern Moravia (Czech republic).

Opis:
The elevation is used to illustrate the differences in the structure and growth of mountain forests. The aim of the study was to determine (1) whether the characteristics used to describe the condition and structure of forest stands under protection status (volume of merchantable timber, tree density, total height of trees in the regeneration layer, volume of dead stems, current annual volume increment, volume of dead trees, periodic changes in standing volume) change at the same rate along with the elevation, and (2) whether in mountains without upper montane zone, the values of the selected characteristics of stands located in the highest elevation zone decrease at a low rate with elevation and are comparable to the stands at the same elevation in higher mountains ranges. The study was located at an elevation of 400−909 m a.s.l. in the Stołowe Mountains National Park (PNGS; SW Poland). We used data from the measurements performed in 2009 and 2014 on 358 permanent sample plots. Plots were assigned to one of five elevation zones of 100 m a.s.l. We assumed that the characteristic value decreased with the increase in the elevation, and that such change was the same for all stand characteristics. This hypothesis was verified using the ANOVA for the repeated samples. The calculations were based on standardized values of the characteristics measured on individual sample plots. The higher above sea level the plot was located, the greater share of spruce in the stand (fig. 1). The standing volume (fig. 2), trees density (fig. 3) and current annual volume increment (fig. 6) decreased with elevation, while the volume of dead stems (fig. 4) increased. The net changes in standing volume (fig. 8) were the smallest in the stands located at the lowest and at the highest zone (400−499 and 800−909 m a.s.l.). No significant relationship was found between the total height of trees in the regeneration layer (fig. 5) or the volume of dead trees in the period 2009−2014 (fig. 7) and the elevation. Individual characteristics differed in the rate of changes of their values with elevation (fig. 9). The structure of stands growing at the highest elevation was the most variable. These stands were rather a substitute for the upper montane zone forests. The rate of the observed decrease of the volume of merchantable timber, tree density and current volume increment in the stands of PNGS was higher than in other forests in the Polish mountains.
