Opis:
The linear theory of viscoelasticity remains an important field of research like most solids and polymer materials when exposed to a vicious dynamic loading effect. This article introduces a new model for describing the behavior of thermoviscoelastic microbeams considering the effects of temperature change and the longitudinal magnetic field. The governing equations in this model are derived based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, Kelvin–Voigt model of viscosity, the generalized thermoelasticity, and the classical Maxwell equations. The two ends of the microbeam are clamped and subjected to the influence of a laser pulse with a temporal intensity profile. The analytical solutions to the physical fields are evaluated using the Laplace transform and its inversion transforms are performed numerically. The thermo-viscoelastic responses of the microbeam are calculated numerically and investigated graphically. The effect of different parameters such as viscosity, laser intensity, and the magnitude of the magnetic field are studied in detail.

Opis:
This article investigates stress and induced temperature in an isotropic, homogeneous, thermoelastic half-space using a two-temperature generalized thermoelasticity model. The bounding plane surface of the present half-space continuum is subjected to a non-Gaussian laser pulse. Laplace’s transform space is considered to deduce a closed-form solution to the problem. In addition, the inversions of Laplace’s transformations have been carried numerically to obtain field quantities in the transient state. The effects of parameters of two-temperature, laser-pulse and laser intensity are investigated. A concluding remark for the graphical forms of the derived expressions is presented.

In the paper, the mathematical model, numerical algorithm and examples of computations concerning thermal processes proceeding in a multi-layered thin film subjected to an ultrafast laser pulse are discussed. The equations describing a course of the analysed process correspond to the dual-phase-lag model and contain both the relaxation time tau q and additionally the thermalization time tau T. At the stage of numerical simulation, the finite difference method has been used. The algorithm is based on an artificial decomposition of the domain considered, while common thermal interactions between successive layers are taken into account using conditions of heat flux and temperature continuity at points corresponding to internal boundaries (1D task has been considered).
W pracy przedstawiono model matematyczny, algorytm numeryczny i przykłady symulacji dotyczących przebiegu procesów cieplnych w wielowarstwowym mikroobszarze nagrzewanym ultraszybkim impulsem generowanym przez laser. Równanie opisujące przebieg procesu odpowiada modelowi z dwoma opóźnieniami wynikającymi z czasu relaksacji i czasu termalizacji.

The paper is devoted to study the effect of gravity, magnetic field and laser pulse on the general model of the equations of generalized thermoelasticity for a homogeneous isotropic elastic half-space. The formulation is applied under four theories of generalized thermoelasticity: the coupled theory, Lord-Schulman theory, Green-Lindsay theory as well as Green-Naghdi theory. By employing normal mode analysis, the analytical expressions for the displacement components, temperature and the (mechanical and Maxwell’s) stresses distribution are obtained in the physical domain. These expressions are also calculated numerically and corresponding graphs are plotted to illustrate and compare the theoretical results. The effect of gravity, magnetic field and laser pulse are also studied and displayed graphically to show the physical meaning of the phenomena. A comparison has been made between the present results and the results obtained by the others. The results indicate that the effects of magnetic field, laser pulse and gravity field are very pronounced.

In this paper, the two-temperature thermoelasticity model is proposed to a specific problem of a thermoelastic semi-infinite solid. The bounding plane surface of the semi-infinite solid is considered to be under a non-Gaussian laser pulse. Generalized thermoelasticity analysis with dual-phase-lags is taken into account to solve the present problem. Laplace transform and its inversion techniques are applied and an analytical solution as well as its numerical outputs of the field variables are obtained. The coupled theory and other generalized theory with one relaxation time may be derived as special cases. Comparison examples have been made to show the effect of dual-phase-lags, temperature discrepancy, laser-pulse and laser intensity parameters on all felids. An additional comparison is also made with the theory of thermoelasticity at a single temperature.

In this manuscript, some effects such as nonlinear Kerr, stimulated Raman, and plasma generation effects lead to obtaining the nonlinear refraction index of the air along an intense ultra-short laser pulse based on one-dimensional propagation analysis. The variations in the pulse frequency by the self-phase modulation effect are investigated for achieving the functionality of the refractive index to the frequency. The mentioned functionality allows implementing Kramers–Kronig relations to measure the absorption coefficient. Results indicate that the front of the laser pulse faces a high rate of the energy loss whereas the back of the pulse experiences a gain. The implementation of Kramers–Kronig relations for a theoretical calculation of absorption coefficient variation along a laser pulse propagating in the air in which we have simultaneously taken into account the three above-mentioned effects distinguishes our work from other studies.

Opis:
The ponderomotive self-focusing of a short laser pulse in an underdense plasma under a plasma density ramp is analyzed. The pulse may acquire a minimum spot size due to the ponderomotive self-focusing. Beyond the focus, the nonlinear refraction starts weakening, and the spot size of the laser pulse increases, resulting in an oscillatory self-focusing and defocusing behavior of the beam with the propagation distance. In order to minimize the defocusing, we introduce a localized upward plasma density ramp. Due to the upward plasma density ramp, the laser beam retains a minimum spot size. Self-focusing becomes stronger with a mild ripple as the propagation distance increases. The conditions for the ponderomotive self-focusing for suitable parameters of the laser beam and the plasma are determined. The plasma density ramp of the considered type may be observed in gas jet plasma experiments.

The final purpose of our research is to cripple the epileptogenic focus by laser irradiation. However, the effect of laser irradiation on brain nerves is not well known. In this paper, we observed laser irradiation to the transmission of action potential of a bullfrog sciatic nerve in the experiment. In addition the marginal amplitude of laser energy is obtained. The bullfrog nerve preparations were stimulated supramaximal intensity pulse. The pulse width and the pulse interval are 1 msec and 1 sec, respectively. A semiconductor pulse laser irradiation (the wavelength, the pulse width and the frequency are 808 nm, 990 µsec and 50 Hz, respectively) was employed until when the amplitude of the action potential decreases to 10 %. The laser light was irradiated to the portion between two electrode pairs for recording. The energy of the laser is variable between 13.9- 202.5 mJ/cm2. The laser irradiator is connected to an optical fiber whose diameter is 1 mm. The action potential of the sciatic nerve is observed at 1 day after in order to confirm irreversibility. The experiment was delivered by the laser pulse, the energy of which over 32.9 mJ/cm2. The peak of action potential was decreased gradually by laser irradiation with depending on the time of irradiation. The time to blocking is reciprocally proportional to laser energy. At a day after the experiment, the action potential was not recovered. This result shows the laser irradiation give irreversible blocking to polar excitations. We observed the frog sciatic nerve is damaged by laser irradiation. The results show a possibility that the epileptogenic focus can be crippled by laser irradiation. We are going to have more experiments and obtain important laser parameters. In the future, the experiment and the result are expanded using rat brain and applied human surgery.

In the paper results of single- and double-pulse LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) measurements in collinear geometry are described. The experiments were performed using a unique self-made Nd:YAG laser operating in the Q-switching regime, where the laser transmission losses are switched. Such a laser allowed for an easy and quick change of the operating mode (one and two pulses), free shaping of the energy ratio of the two pulses (division of the energy of a single pulse into two parts) and a smooth change of the delay time between pulses in the range from 200 ns to 10 μs. To our knowledge, such a laser was used in LIBS measurements for the first time. LIBS experiments revealed strong self-absorption depending on energy ratios carried out in the first and second laser pulse in the double-pulse mode. This was confirmed also by statistical factorial analysis of LIBS spectra. Plasma temperature and LIBS signal enhancement were measured both for energy proportions between the first and the second laser pulse and for the first-to-second-pulse delay.

The papers describes the results of a laser pulse broadening in tapered standard single mode fiber. Additional description of a set - up for taper manufacturing, with a principle of its operation, based on elongation procedure of fiber-optics in a low-pressure gas burner, is also presented. A virtue of such a set-up is the possibility of different kinds of taper manufacturing, like punctual, long distance on regular or increasing distance. Tapering process allows us to change a diameter of an optical fiber what means boundary condition changes, beam is propagating in a core (made from silica) surrounded by air. There is a large refractive index step between these two media, allowing for confined pulse (with high power) in a very small area. This effect causes increasing intensity of a propagated beam and amplifies nonlinear effects, like self-phase modulation etc. The article presents the results of pulse broadening obtained in different tapers, made on a single-mode fiber for a wavelength of 1310 nm and a core diameter of about 9 žm. As a light source, the pumped laser operated at a wavelength of 532 nm, which emitted the pulses of 0.6 ns with a repetition rate of about 1 kHz, has been used. All the measured fibers with a taper have a length of about 3 m, where about 1.2 m was for the input (for easier launching) and the output (for easier connection with an optical spectrum analyzer). Experimental results show the pulse broadening in the used taper structures. The best result are obtained for a long distance taper, where the elongated part was about 50 mm (flame brush is travelling to and from along the constant length). For this taper, it can be observed more flat spectrum broadening to the longer wavelength, together with increasing average power of a laser. Theoretically the best broadening we should obtain for a taper length of about 100 mm what will be one of the next subjects of our research. Other tapers also cause broadening effects but their spectra are not so flat. Interesting example is a taper with an increasing length of elongation. We observed additional spectral pick at the wavelength of about 630 nm and 950 nm. These picks are connected with the smaller core diameter obtained in this type of tapering process (the smaller core, the larger broadening). The worst results were for a punctual taper. In this case, a diameter of a taper is very small (about several micrometers) but the losses are very high. The presented results show that biconical tapered single mode optical fiber is a good way to obtain spectral broadening (supercontinuum effect).

The objective of this article was to investigate the dynamic evolution behaviors of plasma expansion plumes by pulses laser irradiating centimeter-scale spherical space debris. A calculated model of centimeter-scale spherical space debris irradiated by pulses laser was firstly deduced based on FEM (finite element method)/COMSOL, and the action rules of plasma expansion plumes by pulses laser-generated irradiating the debris were simulated for different laser powers and action times. The results showed that the velocity of plasma expansion plumes was increased with the increase of laser powers and action times. Especially, when the laser power was 700 kW and the action time was close to 25 μs, the maximum velocity of plasma expansion plumes approached 1.91 km/s, and the diffusion radius of plasma expansion plumes was increased by about 2.5 mm. Further, the diffusion radius was about twice that of 400 kW when the action time reached about 48 μs. As a result, by simulating the transient flow process of nanosecond pulses laser irradiating small spherical space debris, the flow field evolution information and plasma plumes evolution characteristics of centimeter-scale space debris at nanosecond time resolution were revealed.

Opis:
Generation of two identical ns laser pulses spaced by a single μs time interval by means of sequential switching of the output mirror transmittance in a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser is reported, to our knowledge, for the first time. The theoretical study of the process of transmission losses switching is developed. This analysis confirms the possibility of generation of two identical Q-switched laser pulses with 100% efficiency with respect to the referenced single pulse energy. The detailed characterization of the laser in free-running, single and double Q-switching regimes is presented. The laser can be applied in different branches of metrology as PIV, LIBS or holographic interferometry.

In this paper photothermal transformation in semiconductor structures with modified properties of subsurface layer under its irradiation by pulse laser (~10 ns) radiation was analyzed. It was show that the presence of this surface modified layer leads to increasing of surface temperature in comparison with homogeneous case. Moreover, this increasing could even compensate the temperature decreasing induced by thermal source redistribution caused by charge carrier diffusion.
W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań konwersji fototermicznej w półprzewodnikowych strukturach ze zmodyfikowanymi własnościami warstwy wierzchniej, pod wpływem impulsów laserowych o długości 10 ns. Obecność takiej zmodyfikowanej warstwy prowadzi do zwiększenia powierzchniowej temperatury w porównaniu do temperatury jednorodnej struktury. W pracy pokazano, że wzrost temperatury może kompensować spadek temperatury indukowanej przez przepływ związany dyfuzją nośników ładunku.

Opis:
The rapid technical development enhances the demands on constructional materials in terms of their resistance to frictional wear, resistance to corrosion and erosion, high hardness, etc. These demands can be satisfied by, e.g. applying various surface engineering techniques that permit to modify the microstructure, the phase and chemical composition of the surface layers of the treated parts. A prospective line of the development of surface engineering is the production of composite layers by combining various surface engineering methods. This paper presents the results of examinations of the phase composition and frictional wear resistance of the layers produced by hybrid processes, i.e. such that combine glow discharge assisted nitriding performed at 450°C and 550°C with a pulsed laser deposition of boron nitride coatings (PLD method). It has been shown that the boron nitride coatings formed on nitrided 316L steel increase its frictional wear resistance.

Opis:
In experiments with short-pulse lasers the measurement control of the energy of the laser pulse is of crucial importance. Generally it is difficult to measure the amplitude of the pulses of short-pulse lasers using electronic devices, their response time being longer than the duration of the laser pulses. The electric response of the detector is still too fast to be directly digitized therefore a peak-hold unit can be used to allow data processing for the computer. In this paper we present a device which measures the energy of UV short (fs) pulses shot-byshot, digitizes and sends the data to the PC across an USB interface. The circuit is based on an analog peak detect and hold unit and the use of fiber optical coupling between the PC and the device provides a significant improvement to eliminate potential ground loops and to reduce conductive and radiated noise as well. The full development is open source and has been made available to download from our web page (http://www.noise.inf.u-szeged.hu/Instruments/PeakHold/).

This paper presents the results of experiments conducted within the Work Package 10 (fusion experimental programme) of the HiPER project. The aim of these experiments was to study the physics relevant for advanced ignition schemes for inertial confinement fusion, i.e. the fast ignition and the shock ignition. Such schemes allow to achieve a higher fusion gain compared to the indirect drive approach adopted in the National Ignition Facility in United States, which is important for the future inertial fusion energy reactors and for realising the inertial fusion with smaller facilities.

Opis:
The interaction of an intense laser pulse with a solid target produces large number of fast free electrons. This emission gives rise to two distinct sources of the electromagnetic pulse (EMP): the pulsed return current through the holder of the target and the out flow of electrons into the vacuum. A relation between the characteristics of laser-produced plasma, the target return current and the EMP emission are presented in the case of a massive Au target irradiated with the intensity of up to 3 × 1016 W/cm2. The emission of the EMP was recorded using a 12 cm diameter Moebius loop antennas, and the target return current was measured using a new type of inductive target probe (T-probe). The simultaneous use of the inductive target probe and the Moebius loop antenna represents a new useful way of diagnosing the laser–matter interaction, which was employed to distinguish between laser-generated ion sources driven by low and high contrast laser pulses.

Opis:
High-repetition-frequency Q-switched laser is realized through adopting a Nd:LaMgAl11O19 (Nd:LMA) disordered crystal as the gain material, a laser diode lasing at 796 nm as the pumped source, and a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) as the Q-switched device. The out-put characteristics are analyzed under using different transmittance T plane mirrors as an output coupler. Without adopting SESAM, the laser is operating at a CW state, and a relatively high transmittance is helpful for achieving high output power, slope efficiency and light-to-light efficiency. ForT = 7.5% and an absorbed power of 6.17 W, the output power arrives at its maximum of 1160 mW,and the corresponding slope efficiency and light-to-light efficiency are 20.71% and 18.78%, respectively. After introducing SESAM into the cavity, the laser operates at a passively Q-switched state, and the largest slope efficiency is 13.14% under T = 5.0%. Adopting five different output couplers, with the increase of the absorbed power, the pulse repetition frequencies, the pulse energies and the peak powers will ascend while the pulse widths will decline. The observed narrowest pulse width, the maximum pulse repetition frequency, the highest pulse energy and peak power are 1.745 μs, 175.88 kHz, 3.21 μJ and 1.84 W, respectively.

Opis:
Modification of pulse radiolysis (PR) setup and construction of a new laser flash photolysis (LFP) setup at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT) is described. Both techniques are dedicated to studying fast reactions in real time by direct observation of transients. Time resolution of the PR setup at INCT was ~11 ns, limited by the duration of the electron pulse. Implementation of a new spectrophotometric detection system resulted in a significant broadening of experimental spectral range with respect to the previous setup. Noticeable reduction of the noise-to-signal ratio was also achieved. The LFP system was built from scratch. Its time resolution was ~6 ns, limited by the duration of a laser pulse. LFP and PR were purposely designed to share the same hardware and software solutions. Therefore, components of the detection systems can be transferred between both setups, signifi cantly lowering the costs and shortening the construction/upgrading time. Opened architecture and improved experimental fl exibility of both techniques were accomplished by implementation of Ethernet transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) communication core and newly designed software. This is one of the most important enhancements. As a result, new experimental modes are available for both techniques, improving the quality and reducing the time of data collections. In addition, both systems are characterized by relatively high redundancy. Currently, implementation of new equipment into the systems hardly ever requires programming. In contrast to the previous setup, daily adaptations of hardware to experimental requirements are possible and relatively easy to perform.
