    This paper reports on the results of the experiment with pine plantations established in the territory of Pszczyńskie Forests in the moist mixed coniferous (BMw) and moist mixed broadleaved (LMw) forest habitats. The measurements took place in seedlings in the fifth year of growth. The soil preparation variants included: full beds, ridge beds, and strips established with FAO−FAR soil cutter. The parameters subjected to analysis embraced planting density, survival and quality of seedlings, as well as the costs incurred for establishing and tending of plantations taking into consideration soil preparation method. The performance of seedlings planted on full beds was found to be best, while on strips – it was lowest. The seedlings growing on strips showed the best height increment and quality and those growing on beds – the poorest. The variability in parameters between individual sites of the experiment was high.

    Vertical distribution of enzymatic activity in the soil profile was studied in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and oak (Quercus robur) stands located in southwestern Poland. The enzymatic activity for the most part is accumulative in upper layers of soil: on coniferous site type in Ofh and mineral (0−10 cm) layer, and on broadleaved site type in the mineral (0−10 cm) layer.

    Opis:
    The main objective of this study was to demonstrate a relationship between the direction and effectiveness of impact of particular tree species on soil properties and the initial site fertility. The studies were conducted on two neighbouring experimental plots with different forest site types (fresh mixed coniferous forest – BMśw and fresh mixed deciduous forest – LMśw). The analysed species Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), European larch (Larix deciduas Mill.), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) and penduculate oak (Quercus robur L.) were planted in three replications on 400 m2 plots. It was stated that: 1) the humification processes ongoing under the canopy of the analysed tree species are, to a large degree, determined by the type of forest site; 2) under the same tree species the content of calcium and nitrogen in the nitrate form was found to by markedly lower in the BMśw forest site; 3) in the BMśw forest site, the pH and electrolytic conductivity of the soil under the majority of the analysed tree species were lower; 4) the degrading impact of coniferous species on soil was noticeably stronger on the poorer BMśw forest site.

    Pod pojęciem leśne obszary mokradłowe określane są ekosystemy leśne znacznie uwilgotnione. Tereny zakwalifikowane opisach taksacyjnych jako: bory bagienne (Bb), bory mieszane bagienne (BMb), lasy mieszane bagienne (LMb), olsy (Ol), olsy jesionowe (OlJ) i lasy łęgowe (Lł). Średnie stany wód gruntowych powinny na tych obszarach zalegać płyciej niż 1 m pod powierzchnią terenu. Działania, które należy podejmować dla ochrony leśnych obszarów mokradłowych powinny przebiegać w czterech etapach: inwentaryzacja (opis stanu bieżącego), identyfikacja zagrożeń (oszacowanie bilansów wodnych), ustalenie zakresu ochrony (bierna lub bierna i czynna), monitorowanie („śledzenie” efektów). W pracy przedstawiono szczegółowo praktyczne metody ochrony biernej i czynnej dla ochrony zasobów wodnych obszarów mokradłowych.
    The term of forest’s marshland areas is referred to forest areas and ecosystems significantly wetted. These areas are classified in stands descriptions as: swamp coniferous forest (Bb in Polish standards), swamp mixed coniferous forest (BMb), swamp mixed broad-leaved forest (LMb), alder forest (Ol), ash-alder forest (OlJ) and flood plain forest (Lł). The average ground waters level should be shallower than 1 m under the ground surface on those areas. Actions which ought to be taken for forest’s marshland areas protection should go ahead in four steps: stock-taking (current state description), danger identification (water’s balances estimate), protection range establishment (passive or passive and active), monitoring (effects “controlling”). The study presents in detail practical methods of passive and active protection which can be used in marshlands areas water resources protection.

    Opis:
    The aim of the research was to determine the habitat−related variation in the selected structural and physical−mechanical properties of silver birch. Two sample plots were established in the territory of the Biała Podlaska Forest District in eastern Poland. Samples for measurement were taken from the plots with trees aged 45−50 years growing in the fresh deciduous (Lśw) and fresh mixed deciduous (LMśw) forest habitats. The following properties were subjected to statistical analysis: the average width of annual rings, wood density determined for the samples of 20×20×300 mm, 20×20×30 mm, and 30×2.66×0.1 mm in size (the last dimension parallel to grain), tensile strength parallel to grain, compression strength parallel to grain, static bending, modulus of elasticity in static bending and the coefficients of tensile strength parallel to grain, compression parallel to grain, static bending, and modulus of elasticity in static bending. The research confirmed a significant effect of the habitat on the mean values of birch wood density for all examined sample sizes, tensile strength parallel to grain, static bending and modulus of elasticity in static bending. No significant effect of the habitat on the mean values of annual ring width, tensile strength parallel to grain and the coefficients of tensile strength parallel to grain, compression strength parallel to grain, static bending and modulus of elasticity in static bending for birch wood samples was found.

    Opis:
    The paper presents the results of researches carried on averages about precipitation sums, 2003/2004 (before cutting) and 2006/2007 (after cutting) hydrological years in catchment of pond No 5 located in Laski forestry. Discussing forestry is situated at Siemianice Experimental Forest Farm of Poznań University of Life Sciences located about 15 km south-east from Kępno. The forests of this forestry are within range of Nizina Południowo-Wielkopolska, on Wysoczyzna Wieruszowska, which is differential morainic plain, cut with the river Prosna headwaters. Area of the pond’s catchement is about 20 ha and it’s an afforested catchment, with predominance of fresh habitats, in smallest step in area adjacent to pond No 5 occurrence moist broadleaved forest and moist mixed broadleaved forest. Predominant species of tree stand in analyzing catchment there is pine about 100 years. In the soil cover the largest area is dear brown soil, and the most common type of soil is loamy sand. From february to october 2006 carried on analyzed catchment cutting forest stand, which included habitats moist broadleaved forest, moist mixed broadleaved forest and partially fresh broadleaved forest. To analysing choose wells No 1.1 and 1.2 which were situated at cutting area. The researches carried out confirmed, that ground-water levels shows some cycle and depend of meteorological conditions. Maximal levels occurred at the end of winter researches half-year. Whereas minimal ground-water levels, causes higher air temperature and influence with them transpiration forest stands, were in analyzing habitat at the end of summer half-year. The researches indicated also, that without meteorological conditions, large influence at form ground-water level (increase) in afforested catchments, particularly in moist habitats, have carried cuttings. Carried out researches indicated that execute cutting at area analysis habitat moist mixed broadleaved forest causes increase ground-water levels. Ground-water level at cutting area in 2006/2007 hydrological year was closer to land surface, average about 61 cm.

    Opis:
    The study assessed the intensity of Polish konik browsing in mixed coniferous forest (BM), alder swamp forest (OL) and pine swamp forest (BB) of different canopy closure and shrub or ground vegetation cover. The study was conducted in Polish konik enclosure situated in the Roztoczański National Park (eastern Poland) in August 2011. We examined mean browsing intensity and the tendency of horses to browse along 100 m zone from the pasture. The field study was conducted at three parallel transects set in 40 m intervals in each analysed forest habitat, starting at the forest edge and oriented towards the forest interior. Along the transects, 5×2 m plots were established in 10 m intervals. Within each plot the untouched current twigs and twigs browsed by koniks (up to 2 m above the ground) were counted separately, and categorized by a tree and shrub species. For each species 30 samples of complete twigs and twigs browsed by koniks were collected. Twigs were dried by 72 h in 60°C and weighted with accuracy up to 0.001 g. We estimated the dry mass of shoots available within the plot and taken by horses. Generally, koniks were using each studied forest stand proportionally to the mean browse mass. A factorial regression indicates that regardless to the available mass in a given forest stand, horses foraging intensity towards the forest interior was varying significantly. Koniks entered further into the forest the more willingly the more open the forest canopy was. Openness of the forest habitat could indirectly influence the pattern of forest penetration by horses, because of the grazed ground vegetation there.

    Opis:
    The paper presents the study on the height of 10−12−year−old pedunculate oak regeneration in clear−cut gaps in three fertility variants: mezotrophic of poorer productivity (fresh mixed coniferous forest – BMśw), mezotrophic of higher productivity (fresh mixed deciduous forest – LMśw) and eutrophic (fresh deciduous forest – Lśw). BMśw and LMśw were represented by two locations: Gostynin (G) and Parczew (P), while Lśw – by one: Czarna Białostocka (CzB). We analysed the variation of oak height in the patches along the north−south (N−S) and east−west (E−W) gap axes. In each location 3−5 gaps were selected and measurements taken on three transects along the N−S axis located in the western (W), central (C) and eastern (E) part. Significant differences in oak height were found along the N−S axis. Oaks in the BMśw and LMśw habitats in the south−central part, and those in the Lśw habitat in the centre−northern part of the patch were the highest. The height growth of oaks on sandy soils (BMśw, LMśw) was found to be limited by moisture deficit, while on loamy soils (Lśw) – by light deficiency. The differences in oak height along the E−W axis were smaller and less apparent, indicating a tendency towards the reduction of their height growth in the central part of the gap.
