The article is dedicated to some greeting formulae and some address forms in contempo-rary Chinese (more precisely Mandarin) language. It discusses general rules of grammatical and lexical system as well as pragmatics and language politeness both in official and unoffi-cial speech. The text is partly of a comparative character (it presents how different expres-sions function within Polish and Chinese communication). It also underlines the glottodi-dactic aspect, which, in this case, refers to teaching not only a foreign language but also a foreign culture.

Forms of Address and their Meaning in Contrast in Polish and Russian LanguagesMany studies in contemporary linguistics focus on investigating politeness and rudeness in language. This paper, however, has not been intended as a contrastive study of the phenomena in question. Language politeness and rudeness are conveyed by means of expressions of politeness and rudeness which are perceived as entrenched and recurring in specific situations. These expressions convey the expected meaning of politeness and rudeness accepted in the model of social behaviour. If one uses the explicative method such expressions could be reduced to the following formula ‘I inform you that I follow a verbal conduct defined as polite’. Owing to the emergence of parallel corpora of particular languages, it is nowadays easier to collect data for research on forms of address as well as on expressions of politeness in the first half of the 21st century. Investigating the meaning of forms of address, which are part of linguistic repertoire used to express politeness and rudeness should be regarded as an interesting area of research. It is the consequence of the increasing importance of intercultural communication, expansion of international cooperation, and formation of new standards of interpersonal communication aimed at achieving mutual understanding without resorting to violence. It is worth mentioning that currently there are no bilingual dictionaries which would include practical rules for using forms of address. Moreover, dictionaries (especially bilingual ones) also do not list classifiers of politeness, which becomes a shortcoming as regards the purposes of translation and teaching foreign languages. The aforementioned problems apply to print as well as computer dictionaries. A reliable list of forms of address and their meaning may become helpful in intercultural communication. It would be also important to create a Contemporary Dictionary of Expressions of Politeness and Rudeness in a paper as well as a computer version.

The main purpose of the article is to determine the means of functioning of the concept of language ethics in the awareness of the students in Bydgoszcz. The respondents, on the one hand, signal certain questions connected with language ethics and exchange views constituting the elements of a broadly understood language culture, on the other hand, – provide quite extensive and dependable definitions of language ethics, in which they take into consideration various contexts. The students being questioned usually associate the ethics of word with politeness, respect toward the partner of conversation, responsibility for words, dependability and honesty in language contacts. The academic youth clearly places in opposition the language ethics with such notions as a lie or linguistic manipulation, regarding them as unethical.

The aim of the article has been to bring attention to the instability of the Polish pattern of electronic correspondence by using a distinct comparative background, i.e., the practice of teaching the Polish language to foreigners outside the territory of Poland (in this particular case – the Italians). The efficiency of the modern didactic methods in combination with a high degree of conventionality of the rules of language etiquette are conducive for a quick mastery of correct (expected) linguistic behaviours by the students of the Polish language learning it outside Poland. It turns out, however, that in the Internet reality, the standards of linguistic politeness – generally accepted by a given language community – undergo negative reevaluation due to which the native users of both the Polish language as well as other languages, encounter problems with a dynamic and chaotically changing formula of contacting by means of e-mail.

Artykuł dotyczy świadomości językowej i komunikacyjnej młodego pokolenia Polaków w zakresie językowej etykiety. Autorki analizują wyniki badania ankietowego przeprowadzonego wśród 100 studentów filologii polskiej. Okazuje się, że doceniają oni wagę grzeczności językowej. Razi ich zarówno jej brak, jak i nadmiar. Zwracają też uwagę na niewłaściwą leksykę w komunikacji językowej, czyli słownictwo nieadekwatne do sytuacji oraz wulgaryzmy i przekleństwa. Brak grzeczności zauważają w różnych sytuacjach – codziennych oraz oficjalnych (w mediach), nie tylko u rówieśników, ale i u osób starszych.
This article applies to language and communication awareness of the young generation of Poles in the field of linguistic label. The authors analyze the results of a survey conducted among 100 students of Polish philology. It turns out that they appreciate the importance of linguistic politeness. Irritates them both lack and excess of it. They also point out the wrong vocabulary in language communication, i.e. vocabulary inadequate to the situation and the vulgarisms and curses. Lack of politeness they notice in different situations – everyday and formal (in the media), not only in their peers, but also in the elderly.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest charakterystyka grzecznościowych zachowań językowych we wspólnocie miejskiej determinowanej ekonomicznie. Należą one w większości do skonwencjonalizowanych zachowań komunikatywnych. Zbiór tych zachowań przyporządkowanych w danej grupie społecznej (kulturowej) określonym okolicznościom tworzy obyczaj językowy. Podstawę materiałową badań stanowią osiemnastowieczne rozmówki polsko-niemieckie autorstwa Jerzego Schlaga (1692–1764). Analiza wykazała różnorodność formalnojęzykową i funkcjonalną aktów grzecznościowych. Dominują modelowe zachowania grzecznościowe nad tzw. grzecznością negatywną. Reguły etykiety językowej zawarte w rozmówkach nie różnią się zasadniczo od ogólnopolskiego wzorca grzeczności. Determinanty ekonomiczne mają wpływ na zachowania grzecznościowe, ale nie są jedynym składnikiem warunkującym ich charakter. Zależność ludzi od siebie, sposób pozyskiwania pieniędzy, obrona interesów, okoliczności działań handlowych oraz powtarzalność sytuacji kształtują więzi wspólnotowe, obyczaje i językowe zachowania grzecznościowe, nadając im nieraz odrębne rysy.
The purpose of the articles to characterize linguistic behaviour of politeness in the urban community determined economically. They belong mostly to the conventional communicative behaviour. This set of behaviour as signed in a given social group (cultural) to specific circumstances creates a language custom. The material basis of the study is the eighteenth-century Polish-German phrasebook by George Schlag (1692–1764). The analysis showed the formal and linguistic as well as functional diversity of acts of politeness. The model behaviour of politeness dominates over so-called negative politeness. The rules of language etiquette contained in the phrasebook do not differ substantially from the nationwide pattern of politeness. Economic determinants affect the behaviour of politeness, but are not the only component influencing its character. The dependence of people from each other, the way to obtain money, the defence of interests, the circumstances of trade activities and the repeatability of situations shape the community ties, customs and language behaviour of politeness, sometimes giving them distinct features.

The article discusses the problem of teaching Polish as a foreign language to hearing impaired persons – therefore it should be considered as an item of the glottodidactic research cycle. The subject of the analysis are emails and other written communications of persons with hearing impairment posted at Internet forums. The aim of the analyses is to present problematic areas in the Polish language which are visible in the material gathered. These areas refer to the so called socio-cultural competence which forms a part of communicative competence. Problems spotted refer not only to the inability to use a correct variation of the Polish language, but also to the lack of command of courteous forms which should appear in communication with persons of unknown or superior status. Causes of the difficulties observed in written communications posted by hearing impaired persons should be tracked back not only to the lack of appropriate didactical offer, but mostly to the cultural separation between the deaf and the hearing persons.

Wszyscy rozumiemy istotę wyrażenia mówić/powiedzieć coś dyplomatycznie. Wielki Słownik Języka Polskiego podaje dwa zasadnicze komponenty znaczeniowe tego wyrażenia: powiedzieć coś (1) grzecznie i (2) wymijająco. W artykule staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie jakie są podstawowe mechanizmy językowe pozwalające ocenić wypowiedź jako dyplomatyczną. Mechanizmy te to z jednej strony mechanizmy grzeczności językowej: pozytywne i negatywne strategie grzecznościowe w ujęciu Brown i Levinsona oraz, z drugiej strony, swoiste gry językowe oparte na Zasadzie Kooperacji Grice’a. Dodatkowo zwracam też uwagę na inne marginalne mechanizmy, których nie da się zanalizować na podstawie grzeczności i gier językowych.
The basic meaning of the phrase speak/say something diplomatically is intuitively understood by all of us. Those intuitions are rendered in dictionaries by saying something (1) politely, and (2) evasively. The article is an attempt to answer the question what are the underlying language mechanisms that allow us to evaluate an utterance as diplomatic. Those mechanisms are on the one hand positive and negative politeness strategies as postulated by Brown & Levinson, and on the other hand, specific language games based on the Gricean Cooperative Principle. Additionally, some other marginal mechanisms involved in diplomatic speech are also analysed.

The diversity of language etiquette forms has already been noted by linguists (the author presents the evolution of the way it has been defined in their works). However, this issue does not appear very often in the works of scholars. The article aims at presenting several different types of politeness that have been defined on the basis of various different criteria. For example the substance of expression, which involves d istinguishing between two types of politeness: one expressed in language and the other expressed by non-linguistic means. Another criterion refers to social commonness and according to this criterion we can distinguish between elementary politeness, courtesy and formal etiquette. Diversity of language etiquette can be regarded as resulting form the pragmatic features of a speaker. Culture-based differentiation enables us to talk about ‘traditional’ and ‘new’ politeness. According to the author, teaching different types of language etiquette is an important part of teaching Polish as a foreign language.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie silnego poczucia wspólnoty pomiędzy biegaczami. O życzliwych relacjach świadczą akty grzecznościowe, które występują w komunikacji osób uprawiających ten sport. Analizowany materiał pochodzi z portalu społecznościowego Facebook, za pośrednictwem którego biegacze przekazują sobie informacje dotyczące zawodów sportowych czy też wspólnych treningów. W artykule zostały zanalizowane wybrane wpisy będące przykładami aktów grzecznościowych, takich jak: powitania i pożegnania, zaproszenia, deklarowanie pomocy, odmowy, prośby i rady, wspieranie i gratulowanie oraz życzenia.
The aim of the article is to show a strong sense of community between runners. About kindly relationships witness acts of politeness, that occur in the communication of people practicing this sport. The analyzed material comes from the social networking site Facebook, through which runners inform about competitions or trainings. The article analyzed posts include examples of acts of politeness, such as: greetings and farewells, invitations, declaring the help, refusal, requests and advice, declaring to aid, congratulations and wishes.

W artykule analizuję repliki aktów dodatniego wartościowania partnera: pochwał i komplementów. Koncentruję się jednak na języku młodzieży, ponieważ chcę pokazać zmiany zachodzące w zachowaniach grzecznościowych Polaków. Współczesne tendencje kulturowe mocno oddziałują zwłaszcza na młodzież, która – pod ich wpływem – często przewartościowuje dotychczasowe obyczaje i sposoby zachowań. Zmiany te najlepiej widoczne są właśnie w języku młodego pokolenia. Tradycyjną polską grzeczność można łączyć z postawą modestywną, czyli umniejszaniem roli własnej osoby. Współcześnie wśród zachowań młodzieżowych da się wskazać jednak takie, które zaprzeczają tej zasadzie. Są nimi między innymi odpowiedzi na komplementy i pochwały będące realizacją zasady zgadzania się ze współrozmówcą. Jest to nowe zachowanie językowe, zyskujące sobie jednak coraz więcej zwolenników, nie tylko wśród ludzi młodych.
The article analyses responses to the acts of partner’s positive evaluation (praises and compliments). However, I focus on the language of young people because I want to show changes in the courtesy of Poles. Contemporary cultural tendencies attack especially young people, who – under their influence – often revalue existing habits and patterns of their behavior. It seems that these changes are most visible in the young generation. Traditional Polish politeness can be combined with the attitude of modesty, i.e. with diminishing the speaker’s role. Nowadays, however, it can be observed that young people’s behavior is not compatible with this rule. It includes, among others, responses to compliments and praises, embodying the principle of agreeing with the speaker. It is a new linguistic behavior gaining more and more supportersnot only among young people.

Artykuł dotyczy innowacji w obrębie grzeczności językowej w bułgarszczyźnie przełomu XX i XXI wieku. Tytułowe zmiany form adresatywnych rozpatrywane będą z diachronicznego punktu widzenia, na szerszym tle czasowym i kulturowym. Należy zauważyć, że przez wieki bułgarszczyzna nie znała form podobnych do polskiego pan / pani. Ludzie zwracali się do siebie po imieniu, na „ty”, bądź – kiedy zaistniała konieczność wyrażenia szacunku – używali dodatkowych określeń związanych z wiekiem lub statusem społecznym danej osoby, ale dalsza część wypowiedzi formułowana była w 2. osobie liczby pojedynczej. W bardziej „wyrafinowanych” kręgach obowiązywały formy господин i госпожа (o proweniencji cerkiewnosłowiańskiej), odbierane jako przestarzałe i nacechowane – tak są jeszcze odnotowane w słowniku języka bułgarskiego z 1976 roku. Po 1990 roku formy господин i госпожа straciły nacechowanie, stały się formami neutralnymi i powszechnie używanymi, choć przywyknięcie do nich nie było łatwe. Artykuł dotyczy różnych etapów odwykania od starych przyzwyczajeń i bolesnego czasami przywykania do nowych form. Ukazuje również różnice między formami adresatywnymi używanymi współcześnie przez różne środowiska.
This is a paper on innovations in linguistic politeness in the Bulgarian language at the turn of 21st century. The changes of forms of address referred to in the title will be analysed diachronically with a broader time and cultural background. Note that for centuries the Bulgarian language has not known forms similar to the Polish pan / pani. People would address each other with their first names, “you” or – when they needed to show respect – they would use additional determinants of age or social status of the person, but the rest of their utterances would be in the second-person singular. More “sophisticated” milieus used the forms of господин and госпожа (of Old Church Slavonic origin) perceived as outdated and excessively sophisticated – they are recorded as such in the Bulgarian dictionary published in 1976.After 1990, господин and госпожа lost their obsolete and sophisticated characteristics, became neutral and commonly used, although it was not easy to get accustomed to them. This paper describes individual stages of losing the old habits and sometimes painful getting used to the new forms. It also shows the differences between forms of address used nowadays by various circles.

Forms of (Im)Politeness in the Titles of the German Tabloid Press The press language is defined as a special functional style, which is a combination of various language and stylistic forms.When analyzing the language of particular press titles, one can point to the preferred linguistic means that characterize it.This article is an attempt to analyze the language of the German tabloid „Bild“ in terms of forms of linguistic (im)politeness. Base material is made up here of the titles of articles published in the „Bild“ tabloid in September 2012. The choice of press titles as the object of the analysis is dictated by the thesis that headings, as compressed texts about texts, largely reflect the choice of linguistic means used also in the content of articles.
Pressesprache wird als ein besonderer Funktionalstil definiert, der eine Kombination verschiedener Sprachformen und Stilformen darstellt. Analysiert man die Sprache eines bestimmten Pressetitels, erweist sich, dass jeder Pressetitel bestimmte bevorzugte Tendenzen im Sprachgebrauch aufweist. Im Fokus des Beitrags befindet sich die Bild-Zeitung und die Titel deren Artikel, die in Bezug auf den Einsatz bestimmter Höflichkeits- bzw. Unhöflichkeitsstrategien untersucht werden. Das Korpus der Studie bilden Überschriften aus den Ausgaben der Bild-Zeitung, die im September 2012 erschienen sind. Der Auswahl des Untersuchungsgegenstandes, den die Titel der Presseartikel bilden, liegt die Annahme zugrunde, dass Titel als komprimierte Texte über Texte die Sprache des Artikels widerspiegeln.

Na podstawie badania ankietowego przeprowadzonego w grupie 100 kleryków z dwu poznańskich seminariów Autorki artykułu próbują zrekonstruować świadomość językową młodych osób duchownych w zakresie grzecznościowych zwyczajów językowych. Z odpowiedzi wynika, że zdecydowana większość kleryków postrzega grzeczność językową jako działanie nastawione na interpretację (tak indywidualną, jak i społeczną), dobrze rozumie jej wagę w komunikacji, za rażące uważa zarówno brak grzeczności, jak i grzeczność przesadną, sztuczną. Niektórzy ankietowani używają przy tym leksyki związanej z religią (np. bliźni, brat, chrześcijański), wskazują też swego rodzaju przymus grzecznościowy – konieczność respektowania zasad poprawności politycznej. Klerycy dostrzegają różnice między grzecznością językową w swoich kontaktach z rówieśnikami a z osobami starszymi zwłaszcza w większym dystansie w stosunku do starszych. Poza wiekiem uwzględniają oni, choć rzadziej, zależność od środowiska, wychowania, poziomu dojrzałości.
Based on a questionnaire survey conducted in a group of 100 students from the two Poznań seminaries, the authors of the article are trying to reconstruct the language awareness of young clergy in the field of polite linguistic habits. The responses show that for the vast majority of clerics language politeness is perceived as an action focused on interpretation (as an individual and socially), that they well understand its importance for communication, that they consider both a lack of politeness and exaggerated, artificial politeness as improper. Some respondents use the vocabulary associated with religion (e.g. bliźni, brat, chrześcijański), and they also indicate a kind of compulsion to be polite – the need to respect the rules of political correctness. Clerics recognize the differences between the politeness of language in their dealings with their peers and with older people, especially with the larger distance in relation to the elderly. In addition, they take into account, although less frequently, age, dependence on the environment, education, level of maturity.
