Opis:
This paper focuses on the connection between cognitive psychology and foreign language pedagogy in the context of perception and processing of language structures. It describes second language acquisition as the processing of language information, which is influenced by attention focused on language data. The concept of instructed learning assumes the possibility of manipulating learners’ attention by the teacher. The paper provides a theoretical background referring to such issues and also examples of how this kind of knowledge can be used in the classroom.

The paper constitutes a semantic analysis of the unit of language containing the verb of perception czuć (feel). The aim of the analysis is to establish the proper shape of the lexical unit. The author aubstantiates the recognition of two shapes: [ktoś] czuje [coś] [czymś] and [ktoś] czuje [coś] [gdzieś], and then she demonstrates the semantic adequacy of these two, while simultaneously, pointing to the difference in the form of the argument relating to the sensory organ. The remainder of this article consists in the comparison of Polish units with their English and French equivalents. As a result of this comparison, certain similarities between the Polish and foreign units are indicated: the similar three argument shape of the discussed units, as well as, possible alternative formal realizations of the argument relating to the sensory organ.

Opis:
The study investigated the learner perceptions of a CALL component in a blended language learning context. 52 Taiwanese college students attended instructional classroom sessions and did weekly online assignments in the form of interactive web-based exercises over one semester. Their learning performance was measured by means of two computer-based language assessments at the mid-point and final part of the semester. Learners’ perceptions of the interactive web-based exercises were elicited by a computerized survey conducted at the end of the semester. The results reported on the survey revealed that participants perceived the interactive web-based exercises as interesting but only modestly so. This was probably attributable to the difficulty level of the created exercises and a lack of diverse exercise formats. Even so, having easy access, receiving immediate feedback, allowing multiple attempts, and enabling self-paced learning were mentioned as benefits of the constructed exercises. More importantly, most participants reported the effectiveness of these exercises in improving their reading comprehension and vocabulary leaning. This confirmed language assessment results that demonstrated significant gains in reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge. Implications include suggestions for language teachers and program developers for improving the way web-based learning activities are created and implemented.

Opis:
The role of corrective feedback in second language classrooms has received considerable research attention in the past few decades. However, most of this research has been conducted in English-teaching settings, either ESL or EFL. This study examined teacher feedback, learner uptake as well as learner and teacher perception of feedback in an adult Chinese as a foreign language classroom. Ten hours of classroom interactions were videotaped, transcribed and coded for analysis. Lyster and Ranta’s (1997) coding system involving six types of feedback was initially used to identify feedback frequency and learner uptake. However, the teacher was found to use a number of additional feedback types. Altogether, 12 types of feedback were identified: recasts, delayed recasts, clarification requests, translation, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation, explicit correction, asking a direct question, repetition, directing question to other students, re-asks, and using L1-English. Differences were noted in the frequency of some of the feedback types as well as learner uptake compared to what had been reported in some previous ESL and EFL studies. With respect to the new feedback types, some led to noticeable uptake. As for the students’ and teacher’s perceptions, they did not match and both the teacher and the students were generally not accurate in perceiving the frequency of each feedback type. The findings are discussed in terms of the role of context in affecting the provision and effectiveness of feedback and its relationship to student and teacher perception of feedback.

The Chinese language is a tonal language. The four tones of Modern Standard Chinese cause difficulties for non-tonal language users. Learning to recognize foreign speech sounds and to distinguish their phonological features is the process influencing the complex auditory ability. This article presents the pilot study of auditory reactions of Polish-speaking people to learning a tonal language. Pure tone audiometry used in the study provides data of the hearing threshold of subjects exposed and not exposed to the tonal language. Results show change in auditory sensitivity, significant for some frequencies of pure tones stimuli. Due to the small scale of the study it is regarded as a preliminary research.

This study reports the results of an action-based study conducted in an EFL class to examine whether digital video recordings would contribute to the enhancement of EFL learners’ oral fluency skills. It also investigates the learners’ perceptions of the use of digital video recordings in a speaking class. 10 Turkish EFL learners participated in this study. To determine the impact of digital video recording on EFL learners’ oral performance, the speaking module of IELTS was modified as pre- and post-test. In addition to the analysis of the scores assigned to the learners by two raters using an analytic scale, an analysis of learners’ discourse in pre- and post-test was undertaken to determine whether measures of fluency in learners’ output differ as a result of the video recording. The results suggest that the incorporation of digital video recordings into speaking classes improved the learners’ overall speaking proficiency; however, it did not lead to a significant improvement in learners’ oral fluency. Yet, the analysis of the qualitative data showed that the utilization of digital video recordings may not only bolster the learners’ self-confidence, but also encourage them to take risks with the target language.

Opis:
Numerous studies show that language (in its grammatical forms or morphology) can influence both perceptual judgments, as well as the mental categorization of objects in memory. Previous research showed that using diminutive names of objects resulted in being less satisfied with owning said objects and lowering their perceived value. In the present studies, to explore this phenomenon, we decided to investigate whether the influence of a diminutive on the reduction in the subjective value of an object is determined by the perceived size of the object, in accordance with the „bigger is better” heuristic. In Study 1 participants estimated a banknote to be smaller when it was presented with a diminutive label “banknocik” (banknote with diminutive) than “banknot” (banknote). However, this was not related to the perceived subjective value of the banknote. In Study 2 participants declared that they could buy less with a coin labeled as “pieniążek” (coin with diminutive) than “pieniądz” (coin), but the effect was not linked to the perceived size of the coins. In Study 3 a candy bar labeled as “batonik” (candy bar with diminutive) was evaluated worse than the same product labeled “baton” (candy bar), however, once again this was not related to the evaluation of its size (weight). Thus, we show that the effect of diminutives on the reduction in the subjective value of an object is independent of the evaluation of the size of the object and we consider other explanations for the occurrence of this phenomenon.

This study reports on research stimulated by Lev-Ari and Keysar (2010) who showed that native listeners find statements delivered by foreign-accented speakers to be less true than those read by native speakers. Our objective was to replicate the study with non-native listeners to see whether this effect is also relevant in international communication contexts. The same set of statements from the original study was recorded by 6 native and 6 non-native speakers of English. 121 non-native listeners rated the truthfulness of the statements on a 7-point scale. The results of our study tentatively do confirm a negative bias against non-native speakers as perceived by non-native listeners, showing that subconscious attitudes to language varieties are also relevant in communication among non-native speakers.

This paper addresses the image of the German language, which has been firmly established throughout the centuries in the Polish culture and verification of its image given on the grounds of a questionnaire among German language students at the University of Zielona Góra. Perceptions about stereotypes are inextricably linked with perception of their speakers. For this reason, the German language is viewed through the prism of the German speaker. A linguistic recognition of stereotype refers to the interdisciplinary character of this concept, so especially the history plays a major role in this description.

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of a public person’s speech with its language and translation, and the way they can be manipulated to create a public image. As a public person, Lech Wałęsa has been subject to public scrutiny politically and ideologically ever since he became involved in public affairs as a trade union member and activist. Later, as a presidential candidate in the first democratic presidential election in post-communist Poland which he won in 1990, his publicity soared. Consequently, with his popularity came a heavier price of fame; he was subjected to strong criticism, and the way he spoke became a source of jokes and mocking nationwide. Public image is what others receive and read us by. It is an amalgamation of several factors – language being one of the major ones in creating one’s identity.

The neo-cultural ballast is built into the semantic structures of language. It modifies them and influences the ways of functioning of language in the public consciousness. This leads to violations of the established semantic system of language, and to new ways of combining the sense units, creating a new holistic system of ideas about the world as a result of knowledge. On the other hand, the conscious ability of a person to record sensations, perceptions, concepts, judgments and reasoning changes. These processes affect a person’s self-awareness and, consequently, cultural and social stereotypes.
Warstwa neokulturowa w strukturach semantycznych języka naturalnegoWarstwa neokulturowa wbudowana jest w struktury semantyczne języka, modyfikując je i wpływając na sposób funkcjonowania języka w świadomości społecznej. Prowadzi to do naruszenia ustalonego systemu semantycznego języka, nowych sposobów łączenia jednostek zmysłowych oraz tworzenia nowego holistycznego systemu wyobrażeń o świecie jako rezultatu wiedzy. Z drugiej strony, świadoma zdolność ludzi do rejestrowania wrażeń, percepcji, koncepcji, pojęć i osądów ulega zmianie. Procesy te wpływają na samoświadomość osoby, a w konsekwencji na stereotypy kulturowe i społeczne.
