The author ponders on the reasons why the sport elements which were restricted to professional communication until a point in time are now entering the resource of a larger group of Polish language users and general dictionaries of Polish.

    In this paper, an analysis of selected issues related to comparative formations occurring in utterances by Andrzej Kostyra, a sports journalist, are presented. Simple and then complex comparatives have been analysed. As regards the semantic analysis, semantic fi elds of comparative components have been presented and their functions have been identifi ed and assessed subjectively.

    The language of sport has not been a widely researched area in Polish studies. The communication-related change, the development of social media, the commercialisation of sports are the most important factors contributing to transformations noticeable in the discussed language variety. This paper adopts the medialinguistic perspective and attempts to describe the primary directions of changes in the language of sport, with a particular focus on the fading boundaries between the individual subtypes which have been discussed in taxonomies to date.

    This article deals with modern Polish phraseology and one of the sources of its enrichment. The author discusses the motivation behind the idiom iść w trupa – in sports jargon ‘to fight hard, regardless of risk to the body’, literally ‘to go into the corpse’ (according to the degrees of motivation described by Andrzej Maria Lewicki). While the phrase comes from the language of sport, it has acquired a new meaning in colloquial language. In the article, the idiom’s semantic features in the sociolect and the colloquial Polish are discussed. The second part of the paper presents a few general remarks on sporting phraseology.

    Nell’intervento si propone uno studio introduttivo del linguaggio olimpico, l’analisi del quale non è fino ad ora disponibile né nei numerosi e ampi contributi sulla lingua dello sport né nell’altrettanto ricca letteratura di carattere storico-sociologico dedicata all’olimpismo. Così, l’obiettivo del presente lavoro è quello di condurre una ricerca preliminare sul linguaggio che è stato creato e sviluppato insieme alla gara sportiva più importante del mondo, ovvero i giochi olimpici, e di mostrare alcuni esempi della sua analisi. Prima si discutono le modifiche, integrazioni e revisioni sistematicamente introdotte nel testo della “Carta Olimpica”, invece la seconda parte dell’articolo consiste nell’abbastanza rapido esame di alcuni esempi dell’uso del linguaggio olimpico nei mass media, dove il testo verbale è inscindibilmente legato ai simboli olimpici e dove, di conseguenza, sorge una nuova potente dimensione di significato.
    Ani w licznych i obszernych opracowaniach językoznawczych dotyczących języka sportu, ani w bogatej literaturze o charakterze historyczno-społecznym poświęconej olimpizmowi nie wspomina się o języku olimpijskim. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest sformułowanie wstępnych ustaleń dotyczących języka, który powstał i rozwinął się w kontekście wydarzenia sportowego o wielowiecznej tradycji i światowym zasięgu, jakim są igrzyska olimpijskie, oraz pokazanie pewnych przykładów jego analizy. W pracy omówiono poprawki wprowadzane do kolejnych wersji „Karty Olimpijskiej” oraz wykorzystanie symboliki i metaforyki Igrzysk, umiejętnie połączonej z tekstem, w przekazie medialnym.
    Neither numerous and extensive linguistic studies of the language of sport, nor the rich socio-historical literature dedicated to the Olympism, focus on the Olympic language. This article makes up for this lacuna and examines the language that was created and developed together with the world’s most famous sporting event, the Olympic Games. In particular, it discusses modifications and revisions of the text of the “Olympic Charter” and the use of the Olympic symbols and themes, skillfully combined with text, in journalistic discourse.

    Dans cet article nous nous sommes penchés sur l’étude de mots composés et des phrasèmes en français et en espagnol dans le domaine du sport. Les études faites sur ce domaine relèvent plutôt du domaine spécifique de pratiques sportives comme le football. Mais le monde du sport est touché par d’autres disciplines (sports collectifs, individuels, de groupe) où s’imposent, à son tour, des termes nouveaux. Notre analyse a été effectué dans une perspective lexicologique, suivant les principes de la Lexicologie Explicative et Combinatoire (Mel’čuk et al. 1995), et à partir d’un corpus parallèle français-espagnol. Il provient de magazines de sport et porte sur plusieurs disciplines et domaines tels que la nutrition, la santé ou les exercices d’entraînement. Nous analysons les composés et les phrasèmes les plus représentatifs et fournissons les paraphrases auxquelles ils sont associés, et qui figurent dans les magazines. Le résultat de cette analyse nous amène à dévoiler la frontière parmi les composés et les phrasèmes.
    Artykuł koncentruje się na badaniu wyrazów złożonych i frazemów w języku francuskim i hiszpańskim w dziedzinie sportu. Przeprowadzone analizy wpisują się w konkretną dziedzinę rozgrywek sportowych, takich jak piłka nożna. Nasz ogląd został przeprowadzony z perspektywy leksykalnej, zgodnie z zasadami leksykologii objaśniającej i kombinatorycznej (Mel’čuk et al. 1995), z wykorzystaniem równoległego korpusu francusko-hiszpańskiego. Analizie poddano najbardziej reprezentatywne związki i frazemy.     This paper focuses on the study of compound words and phrasemes in French and Spanish in the field of sport. The studies carried out in this field tend to fall within the field of specific sports practices, such as football. But the world of sport is concerned with other disciplines (team, individual, group sports) where new terms are asserted in turn. Our analysis was carried out from a lexical point of view, following the principles of Explanatory and Combinatory Lexicology (Mel’čuk et al., Introduction), and from a parallel French-Spanish corpus. It comes from sports magazines and covers several disciplines and areas such as nutrition, health and training exercises. We analyse the most representative compounds and phrasemes, and provide the paraphrases with which they are associated, and which appear in the magazines. The result of this analysis reveals the limit between compounds and phrasemes.

    Opis:
    Aim. The article examines the characteristics of learning English in students from different cultural backgrounds – Thailand and Latvia. We aimed to gain empirical evidence of how the cultural background influences student leisure time English language learning habits and their English language learning anxiety. Concept and Methods. In the study two questionnaires were used: leisure time use of reading and writing activities in English (RWA), and English language learning anxiety scale (ELLAS). RWA included five areas of leisure time use of reading and writing activities:  using Internet or e-mail, writing regularly, reading regularly, watching TV or movies, and having checker; ELLAS consisted of four subscales - Communication Anxiety, Fear of Negative Evaluation, Test Anxiety, and English Classroom anxiety. The participants in the study were 95 undergraduate sports science program students from Thailand and Latvia – Thai students were 50, and 45 students represented Latvia. The research was carried out in two stages, first one being a pilot study. Results and Conclusions. The results showed that Thai and Latvian students showed more similarities in their leisure time use of reading and writing activities in English than differences: they often watched movies and TV, but rarely were reading and writing to improve their English. Latvian students spent more time watching TV, movies, reading regularly, using Internet or e-mail than Thai students (p < .01 and .05). Both Thai and Latvian students experienced moderately elevated communication anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, test anxiety, and English classroom anxiety. However, Thai students had higher anxiety than Latvian students in all aspects of ELLAS (independent samples t-test, statistically significant level of .01).
