Opis:
The fallow deer is a species with a wide range of occurrence that primarily inhabits deciduous and mixed forests in Europe and North America. However, it also inhabits boreal environments that are rich in understory, fields, and meadows. Some parts of Poland have a high density of fallow deer due to human activities. Despite its extensive distribution, many aspects of this species ecology remain unexplored. Our research was performed in Osie and Dąbrowa forest districts in the Tuchola Forest (northern Poland), where the fallow deer is an introduced species. The objectives of the study was to determine the factors influencing the winter spatial distribution of the fallow deer in an environment dominated by Scots pine forests. Using the pellet−group count method, four 100 m2 circular plots (5.6−m radius) were located 100 m apart one from the other on the perimeters of 25 equally distributed 500×500 m squares (16 circles/square) within the research area. The mean density of the fallow deer pellets ranged widely across the study area (0.5–5.6 (±1.27) pellets/square). The most significant factor affecting their winter spatial distribution was distance to water. The redundancy analysis showed that in winter, fallow deer avoids the boreal forests and chooses meadows, pastures, and cultivated fields. The fallow deer in the Tuchola Forest occurred mainly along the watercourses and meadows.

The key objective of the study is to analyse structural characteristics of the landscape from the viewpoint of the structure’s durability, characteristics and speed of change. The research focused on the area surrounding Płock. In the analysed period (1987-2010) slight changes were detected with regard to the land cover, though they were significant in terms of the natural environment. No single dominant process determining land cover change was identified. Fluctuations prevailed (producing a slightly different picture in each microregion), with a fixed pattern maintained. Distribution, shape and spatial location of land cover types are only partly determined by land lie and habitat quality. Fragmentation of the terrain is relatively high, which reflects intense land use, at the same time indicating opportunities to preserve the wildlife and vegetation typical for agrocenoses.

The aim of our work on the Kysuce region was to map the incidence of preserved TAL elements, assessment of their contemporary usage and assessment of the threat to them under the influence of anthropogenic and natural stress factors. To do so, it was crucial to understand space and time intersection of TAL existence, the interaction of socio-economic, abiotic and biotic systems of the landscape and assess correctly the contemporary trends of the evolution of society and the threat to the agrarian heritage resulting from it. High proportion of TAL, covering 12% of the whole area, is typical for the monitored region. There were two types of TAL: TAL with dispersed settlement, covering 2261.4 ha of the area (3%) and TAL of arable-land, grasslands, covering 6990.3 ha of the area (9%). In the agricultural country, TAL makes up for important stabilizing elements and their presence increases biodiversity in these regions. It is of high importance to classify TAL as significant landscape features that are important as local bio-centres (because of their benefits for society and the environment).

Opis:
For the good established landscape planning landscape protection and landscape management actions have to take into consideration the actual conditions of the landscape elements. Earlier we dealt with the stability of the landscapes (Kerényi, Csorba, 1996), recently started to investigate the most important factors, which are endangers the proper functioning of the landscapes. Results are calculated for 229 microregions of the country, which are elements of the official landscape hierarchy of Hungary described in the Cadastral of Microregions of Hungary. The average size of the microregions are 100-500 km2. There are certain factors among which some have already elaborated, and others are being worked on yet. Degree of ecological fragmentation of the microregions by roads, railway lines and settlements was determined during the last year. In the case of large settlements the extent of inner parts, traffic intensities of the roads was taken into account, while in the case of railroads it was taken into consideration whether railway lines are single or double tracked. Results were purified using a weighting, where the location of the protected natural areas compared to the situation of the given settlement, roads or railroads was taken into consideration. In the calculations it was taken into account as well that the agglomeration processes of the large settlements may restrict the ecological gates and corridors of the migration of plant and animal species. From the series of maps on natural threats on microregional level, the map of the hazards of drought is presented first. The map gives a definite answer to the question, in which microregions is profitable to establish irrigation systems; and how high is the uncertainty of the rate of their utilization. Global warming, however, may modulate the map resented here remarkably in the next decades. Microregions that have been classified into transition categories with moderate or medium level of drought hazard may fall into categories of serious hazard of drought in the future. A synthesizing map has been completed by summing the seven datasets of the indicator group of natural hazards and the weighting of the subsets. Landscape planning is strongly affected by tendencies of macro economy on the present land use structure. EU agricultural policies have just started to affect strongly on Hungarian land use structure, therefore attempts have been made in order to forecast their impacts. Present Hungarian land use structure has been compared to priorities of the EU. Prospective shifts in land use structure have been determined for the 35 regions of Hungary. According to the 8-10 factors mentioned above, we shall have a detailed database to evaluate the microregions of Hungary in order to characterize the most threatened landscapes, and the most dangerous impacts on the landscape functioning.

Opis:
W okresie powojennym na obszarze Sudetów można wyróżnić dwa główne trendy przemian krajobrazu terenów wiejskich. W pierwszej fazie, nasilonej przede wszystkim w latach 50-70.
In the Sudetes Mountains, several trends of rural landscape transformations have been observed in the post-war period. They reflected changes of the socio-economical situation in Poland. The main change of the rural landscape in the Sudetes in the last decades is connected with changes of land use. The trend of depopulation of mountain areas, which started already in the end of the 19th century and intensified in the 1950-1970's led to abandonment of arable grounds. The secondary vegetation succession resulted in the substantial increase of forest stands and lowering of forest-arable land boundery. A new trend of change of land use can be observed in the Sudetes for few years. Some areas of abandoned fields are turn into use again (mainly as hay meadows or pastures) due to EU agri-environmental schemes and financial supports for maintenance of biodiversity. The depopulation led to disappearance of many former villages or to loosenig of density of the original structure of villages. However, from the end of the 1990's a new trend intensified substantially - there is a high increase of number of new singlefamily housing. In many places their localization is very chaotic and do not reflect the original structure of former settlements. In addition, most of the new houses are not connected with any traditional regional architecture. Other typical features of the Sudetic rural landscape are remains of many palaces, manors and residential-landscape compositions. Many of these features have been neglected and destroyed in the post-war period. However, in recent years there is a revival in interest to restitute and maintain the cultural landscape and heritage. One of the best examples of the renewal of historical buildings and landscapes is Jelenia Gora Basin, where former palaces and manors have been renovated and obtained new functions, serving as hotel, spas or conference centres. In the Sudetes there are also other examples of projects, which aim at restitution and protection of traditional rural landscapes, which are based on the idea of sustainable development. They include, among other, FAO project 'Sustainable Mountain Development' and 'Landscape as tourist value in the Klodzko region'. These projects may diminish the risk of inappropriate further spatial management of the rural areas in the mountains, especially stop the uncontrolled development of housing.

The primary function of rural areas is their use in agricultural production. Currently, according to the balanced development of rural areas, one needs to tend to make those areas more attractive, create new jobs, create new sources of income for the rural population and to improve rural spatial planning. The agricultural production is extremely important in the areas of outstanding natural beauty. The management on protected areas can contribute to the protection of valuable qualities from excessive investment process. It must be conducted in accordance with legal requirements for environmental protection. The purpose of the research was to analyze the changes in agriculture in the context of rural area development. The communities within the Barycz Valley Landscape Park boundaries were selected for analysis. The study was based on the statistical data, including the data from the agricultural censuses of 1996, 2002, 2010, data concerning planning works and planning documents to lay down the development directions of the analyzed communities.

large cities such as Warsaw. The functional and spatial changes in the neighbouring areas of the Polish capital perfectly illustrate what is also happening in other metropolises. Unfortunately, not only the main city itself but also the neighbouring municipalities experience investment pressure. This process consumes more and more areas and favours their irrational spatial and functional development, which has its negative environmental effects. In the face of threats that result from climate change, instead of looking for solutions that are logistically and technologically complicated, resources that are still available around large cities can be used. Undoubtedly, in addition to natural landscape areas, such areas may be agricultural areas. Instead of re-qualifying them, their potential can be used in creating an eco-resilient suburbs system, which is also the ecological base of the main city. The aim of the article is to draw attention to the condition, resources and adaptation possibilities of rural areas in the suburbs of Warsaw, which, like other large Polish cities, needs new ecological solutions. The study used the Statistics Poland (Główny Urząd Statystyczny) data and conclusions resulting from the literature review on the studied issue, as well as analysis of planning documents.

Historical and archival sources are of cardinal importance in landscape research addressing the processes and course of landscape changes in European regions. The Franziscean cadastre from the 19th century is among the most widely used historical sources in Central Europe. We identified 1440 records, finally providing 104 articles reporting the use of the Franziscean cadastre for in-depth analyses in order to identify (i) the practice of the cadastral data processing, (ii) purpose and spatial extent of the study, (iii) use of complementary sources and (iv) particular land use/land cover classes under study. We have found the increasing attention towards the Franziscean cadastre as a source for landscape research reflected by the doubling number of records in the past decade with majority of the case studies located in Czechia (79), followed by Austria (9) and Italy (3). We have identified the trends in the use in landscape trajectory research and application to hydrology, agriculture and forestry. As regards the data processing, several  issues connected with the methodology or design of the records were found (e.g. geographic information system processing description and data source specification). We further problematize the suitability of the supplementary data used and conclude our review with a set of recommendations to contribute to the discussion on the methodology of landscape reconstruction with historical datasets.

The study deals with landslide threats in a low-relief region which exemplifies an area rarely perceived as prone to such geohazards. Actually, in the gently undulated landscape in the vicinity of Koronowo at the Brda River (South Pomeranian Lake District, northern Poland) intensified landsliding was observed in the recent years. The field mapping and examination of air photos showed that endangered terrains are fairly extensive and cannot be limited to initially identified slope failure incidences (hot-spots). The devised landslide susceptibility and hazard map is an outcome of predictive modelling using empirical likelihood ratio function (LR) with respect to seven evidential layers: elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, flow accumulation, surface deposits, depth to glacial raft, land cover as well as the landslide scars. The values of potential losses were calculated based on the mapped land-use categories and current market prices of estates and services. The final map, which resulted from combining landslide hazard with potential losses, shows damage propensity in a spatial scale of the town surroundings. It is meant as a supportive tool for decision-making with regard to allocating funds for stabilization measures or planning placement of new investments. On this background, stabilization solutions for selected sites are assessed in a cost-benefit context.

The international community affirms the critical role of forests in climate change mitigation, which includes reducing emissions from degradation and deforestation, carbon stock conservation, sustainable forest management, and increasing carbon stocks in developing countries. It relates to land use and land cover changes. This study aims to review land use and land cover changes (LULC) in two decades, namely 2000-2010 and 2010-2020, and the impact on carbon stocks. Landsat satellite imagery in 2000, 2010, and 2020 are classified into six categories: built-up area, cropland, forest, water body, bareland, and grassland. This classification uses supervised classification. The accuracy kappa coefficient values obtained for the LULC 2000, LULC 2010, and LULC 2020 maps were 89.61%, 83.90%, and 87.10%, respectively. The most dominant systematic LULC change processes were forest degradation in 2000-2020; the transition of forest to cropland (349.20 ha), forest to bareland (171.19 ha), and forest to built-up area (661.68 ha). Loss of using the forest for other uses was followed by a decrease in carbon stock. There was a high decrease in carbon stock in the forest category (11,000 Mg C∙y-1). The results showed a significant change in land use and cover. The decline in the area occurred in the forest category, which decreased from year to year. Meanwhile, the built-up area increases every year. Carbon stocks also decrease from year to year, especially forests as the most significant carbon store, decreasing in the area.

The objective of this paper is to present the effects of general changes in land use in recent decades on plant cover structure in Poland. The paper is focused on spontaneous processes that occur in agricultural and forest areas being no longer under human pressure. Studies carried out in different geobotanical regions of Poland demonstrated that the directions and range of dynamic changes in plant cover are similar across the country. The formation of secondary forest phytocenoses, on the lands delivered from human activity is a common ecological process observed today in the agricultural landscape. In the dynamics of forest vegetation the basic process is regeneration after ceased use, and the introduction of legal protection.

Krajobraz wsi sąsiadujących z dużymi ośrodkami miejskimi podlega silnej presji. Problemy związane z zanikiem zróżnicowania regionalnego, rosnąca homogeniczność struktur przestrzennych i zerwanie ciągłości kulturowej to najbardziej jaskrawe przykłady niekontrolowanych przemian przestrzeni ruralistycznej. Artykuł dotyczy prezentacji problemów ochrony zabytkowego krajobrazu Żuław Gdańskich na przykładzie gminy Cedry Wielkie, należącej do Obszaru Metropolitalnego Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot. Zasady kształtowania krajobrazu osiedli wiejskich skonfrontowano z ustaleniami obowiązujących planów miejscowych, a następnie porównano ze stanem rzeczywistym, by móc zidentyfikować konsekwencje przestrzenne procesów suburbanizacji. Analizy próbują odpowiedzieć na pytanie czy instrumenty planowania przestrzennego są w stanie ochronić tereny wiejskie przed efektami niekontrolowanego rozwoju miast.
The landscape of villages adjacent to large urban centres is subject to strong pressure. Problems related to the loss of regional diversity, increasing homogeneity of spatial structures and breaking of cultural continuity are the most glaring examples of uncontrolled changes in rural space. This paper presents the problems of safeguarding the heritage landscape of Żuławy Gdańskie with the example of the Cedry Wielkie commune, which belongs to the Metropolitan Area of Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot. The principles of shaping the landscape of rural settlements were juxtaposed with the findings of binding local zoning plans and then compared with the actual state in order to identify the spatial consequences of suburbanisation processes. The analyses aim to answer the question of whether spatial planning instruments are capable of protecting rural areas from the effects of urban sprawl.
