Opis:: A specimen of Trochulus hispidus from Buchenbach, Germany, had its male and female parts of thereproductive system completely separated. The female part lacked auxiliary organs. The male part opened into the genital atrium, but the vas deferens was blind-ended in a way precluding sperm transfer.

Opis:: Laboratory and field observations on Vertigo angustior Jeffreys, V. antivertigo (Draparnaud), V. moulinsiana (Dupuy), V. pusilla O. F. Müller, V. pygmaea (Draparnaud), V. ronnebyensis (Westerlund), V. substriata (Jeffreys), Truncatellina cylindrica (Férussac), Columella aspera Waldén and C. edentula (Draparnaud) provided new information on their life cycle. Genus Vertigo: the life span is 1–3 years, with most snails dying in the next year after hatching. The reproductive season lasts from half of May till the beginning of September; depending on the life span eggs are laid during 1–3 seasons. The number of eggs per lifetime varies widely, the maximum numbers are 55–79 in V. moulinsiana, pygmaea and ronnebyensis, 102–120 in V. angustior, pusilla and substriata and 218 in V. antivertigo. Most eggs are laid at the stage of one cell (even oocyte II), but in some the advancement of development indicates retention of 1–3 days. Hatching usually starts in the second half of June and lasts till the second half of September. Only some of the snails reach maturity in the year of hatching, usually after the reproductive season. Genus Truncatellina: in the wild the life span of most individuals is about one year, some live till the age of about two years. Eggs are laid from half of June till the end of August (in laboratory maximum 11 eggs); hatching takes place from July till the end of September. Genus Columella: in the laboratory C. aspera lays eggs from half of May till the beginning of September (maximum 5 eggs); hatching starts at half of June and continues till the end of September. C. edentula in the laboratory lays eggs at half of April, and juveniles hatch at the end of May and beginning of June.

Opis:: One of the variables oscillating seasonally in Helix pomatia L., described in our previous paper, was their rudimentary cryoprotection provided by modest increases in haemolymph glucose and glycerol concentrations in autumn and early spring, respectively. Because factors governing cryoprotective responses are unknown, we decided to investigate the effects of spring and autumn acclimation of H. pomatia to different thermal and photoperiod conditions on the changes in haemolymph concentrations of glucose and glycerol and on the glycogen level in selected organs. Neither acclimation to short-day photoperiod nor low ambient temperature evoked increase in glucose and glycerol concentration in spring and autumn. Both acclimation variants decreased hepatopancreatic glycogen level. The rudimentary freeze-tolerance in H. pomatia seems to be a combined effect of cold and short-day photoperiod and might also be affected by their nutritional and reproductive status. The effect of exposure to frost-bite is also likely to be involved.

Opis:: Adults of Balea fallax sampled monthly from the Roztocze Upland were dissected to examine the occurrence of uterine egg retention. Developing eggs were found in snails collected between May and August. In June more than 60% of the studied individuals were gravid, while in other months egg-retaining snails constituted less than 10% of the sample. The number of retained eggs ranged from 3 to 17 (mean 12.3) and was not related to the adult shell size. In June the majority of eggs contained shelled embryos (maximum shell size1.1 whorl). The reproduction mode of B. fallax is compared with those of other ovoviviparous clausiliids of Central Europe.

Opis:: Growth of Chilostoma faustinum (Rossmässler, 1835) was recorded under natural conditions in Romincka Forest (NE. Poland), one of the northernmost localities of the species. During the growing season (April–October) the average growth rate was 0.22 whorl/month. In the local conditions Ch. faustinum Leeds three growing seasons to complete its shell growth. Shells of Ch. faustinum from Romincka Forest are slightly smaller than in the other studied populations: their average width is 16.5 mm (range 13–19 mm); and the average number of whorls is 4.5 (range 4–5).

Opis:: Forested scree slopes represent one of the types of shallow subterranean habitats characterised by several unique traits, such as close contact with the soil surface, better availability of organic matter, and lower seasonal fluctuations in microclimate. Relatively varied assemblages of gastropods were collected using a series of subterranean traps filled with formaldehyde or ethylene glycol, exposed inside a forested scree slope at depths from 5 to 95 cm in the Natural Nature Reserve Sivec (eastern Slovakia). The number of gastropods was smaller compared to arthropods. The material of 120 specimens consisted of 22 gastropod species representing 15 families. Almost 87% of the specimens were captured near the soil surface (5– 15 cm) and only few of them penetrated deeper. Ethylene glycol was more effective than formaldehyde in collecting gastropods. No subterranean species were found. Forest species predominated over some hygrophilous and petrophilous ones.
