Opis:
This study examined the travel behawior of commercial public transport passengers in Lagos State, Nigeria. The descriptive research survey was used in order to assess the opinions of the respondents using the questionnaire. A total of 84 samples were used as representative population, while two null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 level of significant. The results that were obtained indicated that a positive correlation exists between frequency of travel and commuters income in Lagos Metropolis and also that a positive correlation exists between frequency of travel and distance covered by commuters in Lagos Metropolis. Secondary data was also sourced to serve as complement to the primary data, thus allowing for a robust research. Descriptive statistical tools such as percentages were also adopted to present the socio-economic characteristics in the area. Findings showed that about 57% of sampled population are male, 62 % are civil servants, 48% of respondents travel for business purposes. Also, that majority of the respondents (50%) said that the commercial public transport is highly prone to accident, while about 64% of the respondents commute on daily basis. It was established that lack of transport infrastructure coupled with poor road maintenance were seen as the leading causes of inaccessibility of the area.

Opis:
In Lagos state, the relationship between urbanization and motorization is unbalanced because the present transportation interventions of the state do not commensurate with her growing population and migration rate. However, the state cannot be said to be totally insensitive to these challenges as witnessed in her renewed effort by providing suitable public transportation system with a dedicated lane and the expansion of other modes of transport such as rail and inland water transport. Through content analysis, this research examined the present situation of Lagos state public transport system with her prevailing population size, sustainable urban mobility approach and the future of public transport in Lagos State in line with global practices. The study reviewed the Lagos state non-motorized transport policy and the impact thus far. It was revealed that unless certain strategic decisions and policies are made, the state will continue to experience the current traffic congestion on her roads as well as increased vehicular pollution and waste of resources. Also, for Lagos state to attain her acclaimed position of a 21st century economy, she must as a matter of policy initiate and implement interventions that align with the principle of urban mobility where cycling, walking, high capacity buses operation is effectively operational and open up of other modes of transportation in the state. It was further recommended that the Lagos state government should take a bold step as recently done in the restriction of motorcycles and tricycles operation on certain routes within the state, hence, initiating interventions that will best enhance public transportation, improve habitable environment and safety of lives and properties in the state.

Subject and purpose of work: Investment in infrastructural facilities has the capacity to create an enabling environment to stimulate business and industrial activities. Nevertheless, there are a few studies on the impact of infrastructural facilities on industrial development in developing countries. The main aim of this study is to investigate the impact of infrastructural facilities on industrial development in Lagos State, Nigeria. Materials and methods: One hundred and three questionnaires were administered to the selected companies through the use of multi-stage sampling techniques across the industrial zones. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics while ANOVA, Stepwise Regression, and correlation were used to investigate the research hypothesis. Results: The research shows that the impact of infrastructure on research and development is poor, while the infrastructural impact on the ease of production is averagely significant. Using Stepwise regression, the study revealed that ease of production (89.7%), productivity (1.1%), and industrial expansion (1.5%) were the major areas of industrial development that were positively impacted while research and development and workers' morale were not positively impacted. The result of Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient shows that a relationship exists between infrastructural facilities and industrial development of the Lagos region (r= 0.880; p-value=0.000) at 0.05 level of significance. Conclusions: The study concluded that adequacy of infrastructural facilities positively enhances and boosts the industrial potential of the study area.

Opis:
The variability in the temperature and Relative Humidity (RH) observed within Lagos State, a coastal region in Nigeria, is investigated using data from Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) for 1980 to 2010. The results reveal an annual mean value of 27.20°C and 83.01% for the temperature and RH respectively and an increasing trend in RH over the study period while such rising trend in the mean temperature is reversed from 2005 to 2010. The findings show an inverse relationship between the temperature and RH while it further indicates that low temperature is associated with increased rainfall under the accompanying cloudy condition and vice versa. These observations are supported by the strong correlation coefficients between the RH and the rainfall (0.72) and that between the RH and the temperature (-0.95) while -0.59 is obtained between the rainfall and the corresponding temperature. The correlations show that the impacts of the precipitation on RH are stronger than the effects it has on the temperature while both temperature and RH strongly depends on each other. Hence, under a future global warming, extremely warm atmospheric condition characterized by high RH in the coastal region could cause heat stroke, discomfort and health problems among the inhabitants. However, the area becomes conducive and attractive to tourists under moderate RH and good temperature.

A palynological study of a 30 m borehole within the Akoka campus of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Nigeria revealed Late Quaternary paleo-vegetational, climatic and environmental changes. Sixteen samples at a regular interval of 2 m were subjected to standard palynological and sedimentological techniques. Six pollen zones representing six paleoclimatic phases within the Late Quaternary period were recognized. The age model is based on two radiocarbon dates (6 m: 5,495 ± 25 ¹⁴C yr and 12 m: 15,660 ± 40 ¹⁴C yr) and, by extrapolation, the sequence spans approximately the last 35,000 yr BP. The African maximum transgression and the African Humid Period (wet paleoclimate maximum) – the Nouaktchottian, and Pre-Nouaktchottian respectively – were recognized, while the Ogolian II (Erg II) was stratigraphically recognized and the Upper Inchirian extrapolated. Recovered diatom frustules with other proxies were employed for paleoclimatic and paleoecological deductions. Four hydrological cycles and three paleoecological settings were identified. Results from this work indicate the co-eval record of paleoclimatic events across Africa, suspected cooling during the African maximum transgression in Nigeria and the usefulness of coastal freshwater swamp sediments for paleoclimate studies.

The Lagos Lagoon is under increased pressure from growth in human population, growing demands for natural resources, human activities, and socioeconomic factors. The degree of these activities and the impacts are directly proportional to urban expansion and growth. In the light of this situation, the objectives of this study were: (i) to estimate through satellite imagery analysis the extent of changes in the Lagos Lagoon environment for the periods 1984, 2002, 2013 and 2019 using Landsat-derived data on land cover, Land Surface Temperature (LST), Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI); and (ii) to evaluate the relationship between the derived data and determine their relative influence on the lagoon environment. The derived data were subjected to descriptive statistics, and relationships were explored using Pearson’s correlation and regression analysis. The effect of land cover on LST was measured using the Contribution Index and a trend analysis was carried out. From the results, the mean LSTs for the four years were 22.68°C (1984), 24.34°C (2002), 26.46°C (2013) and 28.40°C (2019). Generally, the mean LSTs is in opposite trend with the mean NDVIs and EVIs as associated with their dominant land cover type. The strongest positive correlations were observed between NDVI and EVI while NDVI had the closest fit with LST in the regression. Built-up areas have the highest contributions to LST while vegetation had a cooling influence. The depletion in vegetative cover has compromised the biodiversity of this environment and efforts are required to reverse this trend.

Electrical resistivity investigation was carried out at Ibeju Lekki, Southwestern Nigeria. The thrust of this study is to determine the geoelectrical parameters of the shallow aquifer and estimate the hydraulic characteristics of this aquifer unit from the surface geophysics. The area falls within the Dahomey basin of the Nigeria sedimentary terrain. Twenty-one VES were conducted using Shlumberger array with a maximum half current electrode (AB/2) of 100 m giving total spread of 200 m. Data were interpreted using partial curve matching technique and assisted 1-D forward modeling with WINRESIST software. The qualitative interpretation revealed KQ curves (ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3 > ρ4) and KH curve (ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3 < ρ4). The geoelectric section generated from the results of the VES revealed a four geo-electric layers; these include topsoil with resistivity ranging from 213-5404 Ωm, dry sand with resistivity values vary from 301to 17178 Ωm, saturated sand with resistivity varying from 110 to1724 Ωm and sand (saline water content) with resistivity values of between 8 and 97 Ωm. The major aquifer in the area occurs at the third geoelectric layer. The depth to this aquifer is of between 0.7m and 6.0m and the layer thickness is between 0.2 m and 19.9 m. The hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer estimated from the geoelectric parameters reveal that the aquifer has porosity values of between 29.4 % and 57.7 %, protective capacities of between 0.00013 and 0.015 mhos, transverse resistance ranges from 345-18502 Ωm2, transmissivity values vary from 13 to 310 m2/day and hydraulic conductivity ranges from 0.8-65 m/day. The results show that the aquifer is characterized by high porosity and low protective capacities of overburden layers indicating that it is highly vulnerable to surface contamination. It has high transverse resistance, high transmissivity, and high hydraulic conductivity indicating that the aquifer can transmit water at higher rate and sustain the need of the community. This study has demonstrated the efficacy of surface geophysics in estimating hydraulic characteristics of an aquifer where pumping test data are not available and also to determine its vulnerability to surface contaminants.

Opis:
In spite of the strategic importance of agriculture to the development of nations, agricultural-based entrepreneurship (agropreneurship) seems to be an unfavoured option among youths schooling – and living- in urban settlements such as Lagos state, Nigeria. Despite the various agropreneurship initiatives being implemented by the Lagos State Government through its agencies and institutions, the youth or young entrepreneurs desire to pursue their careers in the service, technology, fashion and entertainment sectors where it is happening and trendy. Consequently, the push to become agropreneurs seems to be somewhat restricted to undergraduate students motivated by factors unknown to many researchers and policy makers. This study assessed the factors that motivate Lagos-owned tertiary institutions’ undergraduate students to become agropreneurs. Using the concurrent transformative mixed method research design, data were collected from young agropreneurs (campus farmers) who are undergraduates of the three tertiary institutions – Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) – owned by Lagos State using the interview and questionnaire methods. Respondents were asked about their motivations to start a business in the agriculture sector, and results of the analysis using simple percentage and content analysis brought to the fore that, among the key motivators for the respondents to start their agro-based businesses were to challenge themselves to think out of the box, becoming independent with the ability to control their time, pursuing their dream, elevating their socio-economic status, and to solve the food crisis. Based on the results, this study recommended amongst others that, government through its specialized ministries, departments and agencies should create policies that encourages campus farming project and also, grants should be made available to campus farmers based on the quantity of their produce yearly.
Korzystając z projektu badawczego opartego na równoczesnej transformacyjnej metodzie mieszanej, zebrano dane od młodych rolników (rolników z kampusu), którzy są studentami trzech wyższych uczelni Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), której właścicielem jest stan Lagos, metodą wywiadu i kwestionariusza.

Opis:
Understanding the needs of ferry service commuters cannot be overemphasis, considering the fact that the survival of any business largely depends on the volume of its customer base, and how well they are satisfied with the level of services received. More so, owing to the high population of Lagos state and usual traffic congestion across main roads during the peak periods, water transportation via ferries undoubtedly becomes a viable alternative to ensure stakeholders satisfaction in urban planning for a city majorly surrounded by water providers. Thus, this study employs the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to prioritise the ferry services needs of commuters to make effective managerial decisions that will aid efficiency in their operations, thereby, increasing the market penetration, competitive edge and commuter satisfaction. A sample size of two hundred and four was computed through purposive sampling procedure. The data retrieved were analysed using pairwise comparison in line with AHP methodology. The study found out that among the criteria measured, comfort was perceived more important to commuters compared to its pairs. In addition, recreational facilities, ease of online payment, regular maintenance of waterways and seating with good legroom were ranked high by the commuters. Therefore, to ensure a sustainable competitive advantage over other modes of transportation, these indicators need to be effectively considered in water transportation policy.

Literatures have stressed the importance of mode choice preference in accurately predicting the future travel demand. Despite having diverse travel needs and challenges coupled with the proliferation of informal operation of car hire services in Lagos over the years, there is still a lack of knowledge and understanding of the intra-mode use behaviour of Lagos metropolitan residents of taxi services. This is necessary to address the numerous challenges posed by inadequate transport supply within the Lagos metropolis. Using the availability of the traditional taxi (Lagos yellow cabs), Uber, Bolt, this study examines the factors that drive a sustainable intra-modal competition through the mode choice behaviour of a diverse Lagos population with residents sampled from selected areas where all the three modes operate within the Lagos metropolis. A structured questionnaire form was administered randomly to 174 commuters to find out the reasons behind their preference and their perception of the service delivery of ride service hailing operators in comparison to the traditional taxi (Lagos yellow cabs). The study revealed that Uber had the highest preference (41.3%) followed by Bolt (36.8%) with yellow cabs recording only 6.9%. Service charge (cost) for taxi service was responsible for 74.1% of intra-modal preferences. The stepwise multiple regression results further revealed that easy access to Uber and Bolt (through the use of ride-sharing apps) and service charge had significant influence on passengers’ intra-mode preference. The study suggests that government should step up action at reviving the ‘yellow cabs’ to boost access to taxi services within Lagos metropolis.

The city of Lagos, Nigeria has undergone rapid increase in population due to economic and commercial activities. As a result of this, there has been a persistent change in Land use/Land cover (LULC) of the city and shoreline through the years. This observation necessitated the use of multi-temporal satellite data to characterize shoreline changes between 1984 and 2016. Therefore, the study attempts to determine the shoreline change during the study period and the coastal land use and land cover (LULC) of the study area. Satellite data was acquired and subjected to some image processing techniques such as image enhancement, supervised classification, and shoreline extraction. The digital shoreline analysis system (DSAS) in ArcGIS environment was utilized to cast transects and calculate statistical parameters for the shoreline and spatial data used was Landsat TM, ETM and OLI for the years 1984, 1990, 2000, 2004 and 2016 respectively. The results indicate that LULC changes in built-up areas increases rapidly during the years (1984-2015) from 12.2 -36.2%, water bodies increased from (1984-1990-2000) from 52%, 54%, 52% and reduces to 47.4% in the year 2015 while vegetation cover reduces drastically through the year range from 36%, 33%, 29%, 24% and 16%. A total of 1034 transects were generated with 100m spacing and the average rate of change was calculated for the 32 year period (1984-2016). The linear regression rate (LRR) shoreline result shows a mean of -0.59m/year where 73.1% of transect fall under erosion and 61.8% accretion respectively. The end point rate (EPR) and net shoreline movement (NSM) analysis revealed mean shoreline change of -0.57m/year and -18.1m/period respectively from 1984-2016. The EPR and NSM results both revealed that 231 transect or 22.3% experienced erosion, and 805 transect or 77.9% with accretion. It was observed that significant accretion rate recorded along most sections of the shorelines is attributed to beach nourishment activities.

The study assessed passengers’ satisfaction with the services of the Lagos Shuttle Train Services in Lagos, Nigeria. Two types of train, the Mass Transit Train (MTT) and the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), were covered. Using multistage sampling, 246 passengers were surveyed. It was found that the DMU passengers had higher socioeconomic profiles; the overall condition of the DMU was also better. Further analyses reveal that passengers’ satisfaction differed for the train types: the MTT passengers were more particular about the operational environment, while the DMU passengers were concerned with both physical characteristics and the operational environment. Generally, passengers were satisfied with accessibility, coverage, fare, safety at station and onboard, security at station, and security of luggage; however, the Lagos Shuttle Train Services was found wanting on several key indicators. Recommendations are proffered towards enhancing the service quality of the Lagos Shuttle Train Services.
