INTRODUCTION: Sepsis stands as the primary cause behind intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. The most critical parameters in sepsis management have been shown to be early recognition. Management delays have been associated with increased mortality and morbidity The aim of this study is to study the lactate/albumin (L/A) ratio as prognostic tool for risk stratification in septic patients admitted to ICU. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted with100 patients. Admitted in ICU with sepsis and septic shock were studied. Serum lactate/albumin ratio was calculated at the time of admission. Apache 2 and SOFA score was calculated at admission. All patients received initial treatment according standard protocol. All patients were followed up till discharge. An adverse outcome in terms of in hospital mortality, length of ICU stays and inotropic support was used in this study. RESULTS: Lactate/albumin ratio >1.5(AUC 0.89) correctly predicted in-hospital mortality among 27% patients with sensitivity and specificity of 90% and 78.6% respectively (p value =0.001). Lactate/albumin ratio <1.50 (AUC 0.73) correctly predicted length of ICU stays <72 hours among 17% patients with sensitivity and specificity of 85% and 58.8% respectively (p value =0.001). Lactate/albumin ratio >1.50 (AUC 0.91) correctly predicted requiring inotropic support among 36% patients with sensitivity and specificity of 83.7% and 89.5% respectively (p value =0.001). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that lactate/albumin ratio was a stronger parameter than lactate, albumin, APACHE score and SOFA alone in predicting mortality, length of ICU stay and requiring noradrenaline inotropic support among sepsis patients in the ICU.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the effect of cold water immersion on changes in blood lactate concentration during post-exercise recovery in swimmers subjected to2-minute exercise test (front crawl swimming movements) using a VASA Swim Ergometer, with the maximum arm speed movements, as during the freestyle technique. The study covered 11 professional swimmers of the MKP Szczecin club, tested twice with a two-week interval. Each participant performed an exercise test twice, once with a passive recovery period, and the second time with cold water immersion after exercise, as a method potentially supporting the post-exercise recovery process. Each time before the test, immediately after and at 3, 6 and 9 minutes after exercise, the concentration of lactate in the capillary blood was measured. Statistical analysis of the obtained results showed that cold water immersion applied immediately after exercise resulted in a faster reduction of lactate concentration. The conducted research confirms that cold water immersion used in post-exercise recovery may be an effective method of restoring optimal physical fitness as part of the training process.

Opis:
Tomato is one of the most consumed vegetable crops worldwide. In the break stage, it is perishable, and it has a postharvest life that does not exceed three weeks at 12 to 15°C. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of immersion in water and in calcium salt solutions on the metabolism and quality of tomato of traditional Peumo Pink cultivar stored for 28 days at 10ºC plus a simulated trading period of 2 days at 20ºC. Fruits were treated in water at 5, 45 and 60ºC at two immersion times of 1 and 4 min or in 2% solutions of calcium chloride, lactate and propionate at 10 and 45ºC for 4 min. The respiration rate, ethylene production and heat shock protein gene expression as well as firmness, total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of tomato were determined. Dipping in water at 60°C reduced the loss of firmness and respiratory rate of tomatoes up to 21 days at 10°C + 2 days at 20°C. Treatment in water at 45°C for 4 min and at 60°C for 1 or 4 min stimulated heat shock protein gene expression. However, fruit treated at 60°C for 1 or 4 min showed uneven ripening; hence, the immersion in water at 45°C for 4 min was the most recommended to extend the postharvest life of tomatoes. In turn, the immersion in calcium lactate and propionate solutions at 45°C increased total calcium content and maintained firmness after 28 days at 10°C + 2 days at 20°C. The use of high temperature and calcium salts for dipping would be beneficial to provide the vegetal tissues with calcium and reduce the softening of the tomato after prolonged cold storage.

The paper presents the results of tests on capillary water absorption of mixtures from cohesive soils - clayey sand and sandy clay - stabilized with cement and the addition of a hydrophobic binder. Studies have shown that the appropriate addition of diamidoamine lactate allows to limit the penetration of water inside the stabilized samples, which increases their frost resistance. The mixtures with the additive showed lower capillary water absorption compared to the mixtures stabilized only with cement, especially in the first few hours after soaking with water.
W pracy przestawiono wyniki badań kapilarnej absorpcji wody mieszanek z gruntów spoistych – piasku gliniastego i gliny piaszczystej – stabilizowanych cementem i dodatkiem środka hydrofobizującego. Badania wykazały, że odpowiedni dodatek mleczanu diamidoaminy pozwala na ograniczenie wnikania wody wewnątrz stabilizowanych próbek, co wiąże się ze zwiększeniem ich mrozoodporności. Mieszanki z dodatkiem wykazały niższą kapilarną absorpcję wody w porównaniu do mieszanek stabilizowanych wyłącznie cementem, szczególnie w zakresie pierwszych kilku godzin po nasączeniu wodą.

The purpose of the study was to find out the effect of the proposed training program on some physiological and body composition variables of 24 volunteered youth male football players who under 20 years old (U20, age: 16–19 years, mean age: 17.3 ±1.0 years, playing for last 4–6 years). Those 24 players were divided into 2 groups, 12 players (experimental group), 12 players (control group). The training program consisted of aerobic training, anaerobic training, recreational game and practice football game. Data was collected at zero level (pre-test), in the mid of the program (mid-test) and at the end of program (post-test). For analysing data, repeated measures were used. In the experimental group a significant increase (P < 0.05) in number of shuttles, skeletal muscle, and resting metabolism and a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in body fat have been noted in (mid-test) and (post-test) when compared to (pre-test). However, a decrease was noted in body mass index, blood lactate, maximal heart rate, and visceral fat, but not to a significantly different level. In the control group negative significant increase (P < 0.05) in body fat and negative significant decrease (P < 0.05) in skeletal muscle and resting metabolism have been noted, no significant difference was observed in number of shuttle, body mass index, blood lactate, maximum heart rate and visceral fat. This study would provide useful information for training and exercise physiology and it may have a beneficial impact on health.

Lactate threshold (LT) estimation in endurance sports continues to be a widely controversial field amongst sports scientists and students despite beyond 50 years of research. With the advent of technology and superior sensors, LT research has ventured into newer fields involving wearables and artificial intelligence. Still, there is a felt need to understand the focused areas of LT research and to guide the students, sports scientists and coaches. The main aim of this mini-review is to identify research categories in a descriptive manner and to synthesize broad themes for future research from latest literature. A comprehensive electronic search in three databases was performed including only original free full text research articles conducted in athletes and heathy subjects, published in English between 2016 and 2020 following PRISMA guidelines. Out of screened 466 articles, 14 articles were finally shortlisted as per inclusion criteria and the findings were summarized. Five research categories were identified and reviewed. To conclude, there is a need for consensus in Graded Exercise test protocols used, LT concepts validity for specific sports and the application of valid, reliable noninvasive LT estimation methods in endurance sports. Synthesized broad themes would help guide sports scientists, students and researchers for future research.

Opis:
Background. The physical activity of 29 football players using either aerobic or anaerobic energy regimes was tested during official games and in the laboratory. Material and methods. Under conditions of gradually increasing power on a treadmill, maximal running speed (V, km/h), oxygen consumption (VO2, mL/min/kg), heart rate (HR, beats/min), and anaerobic metabolism threshold (AT mL/min/kg) were determined, and blood lactate (BLact, mmol/L) was measured. Results. The correlation between the total length of distance run during the game and treadmill running speed for the outcome measures were as follows: anaerobic metabolism threshold, r=0.54 (p=0.032), BLact, r=0.37 (p=0.034), VO2max, r=0.41 (p=0.027), and HR, r=0.36 (p=0.047). We found aerobic mechanisms were dominant in ensuring the game activity of football players. Specifically, aerobic mechanisms contribute roughly 32.4-43.8% to playing activity, while aerobic-anaerobic energy supply mechanisms provide for only 17%. Lactic and alactic mechanisms provide for 5.6% and 1.6%, respectively. Conclusions. The results provide valuable information on the relationship between football play activity and aerobic and anaerobic energy supply mechanisms. Enhancing the functionality of the anaerobic lactic-alactic energy system can lead to growth and improvements in physical performance in football players.

Our previous studies showed that glycerol fermentation by Hafnia alvei AD27 strain was accompanied by formation of high quantities of lactate. The ultimate aim of this work was the elimination of excessive lactate production in the 1,3-propanediol producer cultures. Group II intron-mediated deletion of ldh (lactate dehydrogenase) gene in an environmental isolate of H. alvei AD27 strain was conducted. The effect of the Δldh genotype in H. alvei AD27 strain varied depending on the culture medium applied. Under lower initial glycerol concentration (20 gL-1), lactate and 1,3-propanediol production was fully abolished, and the main carbon flux was directed to ethanol synthesis. On the other hand, at higher initial glycerol concentrations (40 gL-1), 1,3-propanediol and lactate production was recovered in the recombinant strain. The final titers of 1,3-propanediol and ethanol were similar for the recombinant and the WT strains, while the Δldh genotype displayed significantly decreased lactate titer. The by-products profile was altered upon ldh gene deletion, while glycerol utilization and biomass accumulation remained unaltered. As indicated by flow-cytometry analyses, the internal pH was not different for the WT and the recombinant Δldh strains over the culture duration, however, the WT strain was characterized by higher redox potential.

The aim of the research was to find the changes of exercises in the organism of the men specialized in middle distance running. Physical working capacity and simultaneous registration of the functions of vegetative systems of organism were investigated. As well biochemical tests (determination of the content of lactate of red cells, haemoglobin, glucose in blood) were done. 10 men (two Masters of Sport, two First - Class Sportsmen and six Second - Class Sportsmen ) aged 17 - 24 specialized in the middle distance ru nning took part in the experiment. The sportsmen's level of health was within the physiological standard. The examination of the men's adaptive body responses to the offered burdens made by us indicates that their functional body capacity increases in the first, second, third and fifth microcycles and decreases in the fourth one. It can be connected with the decrease of haemoglobin content in the blood, especially in the Masters' of Sport blood and in the blood of First - Class Sportsmen , it leads to the decr ease of their working capacity, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of three different warm-up condi-tions on a 5K cycling time trial (TT). Sixteen trained cyclists completed the study. At the first testing session, participants completed a maximal graded exercise test to assess maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and a familiarization of the TT. At three subse-quent visits, the participants completed the TT after no warm up, short warm-up of three minutes at 60% VO2max, or long warm-up of ten minutes at 60% VO2max. The warm-up was assigned in randomized order. VO2, heart rate (HR), lactate, power, and speed were assessed after the warm-up, 1K, and completion of the 5K TT. There was no dif-ference between type of warm-up for time, power, cadence, speed, VO2, HR, or lactate levels at the end of the TT. There was no significant difference between type of warm-up for time, VO2 or HR at the end of the 1K split. Warm-up length was not impactful on 5K TT performance or during the first km of the TT in trained cyclists. These results con-flict with previous evidence indicating that a warm-up in endurance events primarily improved VO2 kinetics at the onset of the exercise.

Opis:
Vaccination of rainbow trout against Yersiniosis confers a high degree of protection to the fish (Raida et al. 2011). On the other hand, vaccination could alter metabolitic reactions in organisms. Therefore, exploring the effects of vaccination against Y. ruckeri on health condition of trout in general, and oxidative stress biomarkers and biochemical alterations in different tissues specifically, would be valuable. This prompted us to investigate theeffects of vaccination against Y. ruckeri on muscle function, and the oxidative mechanism underlying those effects, by detecting relevant lipid peroxidation (2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS) and protein oxidation biomarkers (aldehydic derivatives and ketonic derivatives) as well as biochemical alterations (aminotransferases and lactate dehydrogenase activity, lactate and pyruvate levels) in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss following Y. ruckeri vaccination at first month after oral immunization. Concentrated vaccine with inactivated by formalin Y. ruckeri strains was enclosed by fish feed, and was administered three times every other day. Rainbow trout from each group were euthanized 30 days after the immunization, and then muscle tissue were sampled for analysis. The TBARS level in the muscle tissue of vaccinated group was at same level compared to unhandled group. The ketonic derivatives of oxidatively modified proteins in the trout following Y. ruckeri vaccination at first month after immunization were significantly increased compared to the level in the controls, while the aldehydic derivatives of oxidatively modified proteins were non-significantly increased. Pyruvate level was increased by 47% (p = 0.013) in vaccinated trout compared to values of untreated fish. Lactate level, aminotransferases and lactate dehydrogenase activities were nonsignificantly altered in vaccinated trout. Our results suggest that vaccination could promote the activation of the gluconeogenic substrate-providing enzymes, as well as substrates for aerobic metabolism that might in turn contribute to increase of oxidatively modified proteins. The oxidative stress biomarkers, i.e. content of oxidative protein damage, as well as biochemical enzymes and substrates were sensitive to vaccination of trout against Y. ruckeri and may potentially be used as biomarkers in evaluating vaccine toxicity in rainbow trout. From a practical point of view, the results may be useful in relation to studies of infections and the development, administration and uptake of new vaccines applicable for large amounts of fish.
Pierwszą z nich karmiono paszą bez dodatków i konserwantów (firma „Bestfeed”), drugą paszą z inaktywowanymi antygenami Y. ruckeri podawaną 3 razy co drugi dzień, a w pozostałe dni podawano paszę kontrolną. Wyizolowane bakterie należały do serotypu O1.

Oxygen uptake measurements are without question useful and a staple measurement for the estimation of exercise energy costs. However, steady state models cannot be used to successfully model intermittent resistance exercise energy costs. Our laboratory has taken steps to avoid such comparisons between these discrepant exercises. We have separated out exercise and recovery periods during resistance training and utilize capacity (kJ) estimates as opposed to rate measures (kJ min-1). Moreover, we avoid anaerobic threshold concepts as applied to resistance exercise. When viewed accordingly, resistance exercise energy costs are opposite those of the steady state model: exercise oxygen uptake is highest for steady state exercise and lowest for resistance exercise, recovery oxygen uptake can be the highest energy cost for resistance exercise whereas for steady state exercise it may or may not be meaningful, and anaerobic energy costs represent a significant component of resistance exercise that plays little to no role with steady state exercise.
