Opis:
The subject-matter of the article is the appraisal of the problem of cultural identity of the countryside in the process of historic conditionings as a synthesis of interdependencies of natural and man-made factors on a specific area. Considerations comprise a modern process of impendencies threatening the cultural panorama, a brief discussion on hitherto forms of protection and finally proposals concerning integrated protection covering all fields that make cultural values as well as some methodological comments. And here are the most important statements. A cultural picture of the countryside is the history recorded in a concrete landscape; its shape and identification have been affected by a number of factors both original nature-derived as well as secondary man-made ones. A similarity of factors and historical unity of vast areas decided of the formation of features that were common and determinant for each country and region, the sum of which represents the richness of the cultural panorama and human attainments. Next to its properties recorded on the scene of the outside world, the cultural panorama has also its non-material dimensions without which external forms could not get crystallized. The field of spiritual culture seems to drift us away from a traditional scope of activities dictated by professional limits; it must however be always kept in mind, as its contribution conditions the behaviour of the content inherent in the material substance and form. The cultural panorama is not invariable. It is subject to evolutions and transformations; it may be either enriched or reduced. Its behaviour during transformation is of essential importance, just as it represents roots of the social link, awareness and self-determination of regional communities and nations, capable of deciding of their lives and persistence in face of an inevitable passing away of individuals by the law of nature. In a historical process a picture of the countryside developed harmonously when works of men remained in a logical relation to a specific area, of whom they were an integral part. A menance to the cultural landscape appeared when the balance of the functioning of the ecosystem and component of both material and non-material nature specific for the function and identity of the rural body got disturbed. The present day brings with it transformations on an unprecedented scale and at a very rapid pace. Without going into the appraisal of the situation as a whole it can easily be seen that the present pace of urbanization results not only in devastation of the ecosystem but also in destruction of the entire cultural areas. This can be noticed in: — degradation of the natural environment due to an excessive depletion of its resources, — decline and disintegration of social links as well as disappearance of characteristics individualizing rural bodies as a result of an accelerated process of the integration of rural and town communities, — devastation of rural structures as a result of investments that did not fit into their historical space arrangements, — disappearance of traditional functions of rural bodies as a result of transformations that were against their nature. Devastation and disappearance of the traditional building is only one of a vast number of phenomena. They were sped up by a bad technical condition of resources and low utility standard. Still, the worst factor was a psychical pressure that regarded old or traditional buildings as an expression of backwardness. Apart from that, building, fire-protection and insurance regulations as well as the so-called orderly campaigns permitted further devastation of wooden constructions. A departure of the wooden village into the past became a real fact. Unfortunately, the old architecture has been replaced by the one that was far from being perfect and by unplanned chaotic location on undeveloped areas. The features of regional identity flowing from tradition, logics of function and place have disappeared. Should the countryside become an area of subculture or, at the best case, a smaller town? When watching the development of the protection of architectural monuments and material rural culture one can notice the evolution of doctrines and practice assosiated with broadly understood notion of “historic monuments”, which in turn leads to comprising both individual structures, their complexes and structural arrangements. Still, this development is not free from controversies, negligence (e.g. in the field of the so-called serial buildings or industrial plants), conflicts or “competence void”. One should also notice that open-air museums represent only a partial solution on an limited museological scale. Attempts have been made to set up “rural reserves” displaying clashes of the countryside with life problems. In this context, the need for a regular development of the countryside with a simultaneous preservance of cultural identity and continuity prompts us to consider the problem of the reinstatement of the countryside as the task, which would mean actions aimed at protecting the cultural landscape in the process of development. This is combined with the integration of the protection of all elements that make up the cultural identity, namely: — factual natural landscape, — settlement structure fixed in the hamlet plan, road network and field expanses, — resources of building substance, greenery and water arrangements, — certain non-material elements affecting characteristics of the cultural picture. Only the countryside seen in that way, in its entire territory, should become a field for the revival, which may be achieved by: — full recording of cultural resources, — their scientific analysis and estimation, — designation of protection zones, — drawing of guidelines for the protection, and — their introduction, as an obligatory element, into plans of spatial development. Hitherto experiences have revealed a need for cooperation between various scientific disciplines, specialists of which are represented in the cultural picture. Prospects for the cooperation of the scientific profession have been opened wide. A separate problem the discussion of which goes beyond the framework of the present report is the saving of spiritual culture, which, from the very beginning, was formed in the sphere of the principles of ideal nature specific for the Polish nation and manifested itself in numerous traits that combine spiritual wefts with a vision of the outside world. Its behaviour should take place not only in the form of popularizing superficial folk forms but also in the shaping of awareness in the educational process and social life.

The author of the article, whose book Simvolika zhivotnykh v slavyanskoy narodnoy traditsii was published in Moscow in 1997, presents the principles describing cultural images of animals in Slavonic folk tradition. The principles stem from a semiotic conception which assumes the existence of a common schema for the characterization of particular animals, or rather of their linguistic-cultural images. In the images, the author discerns sixteen categories of features of a mythological nature (i.e., among others, names, social status, appearance, attributes, origin, place and time of habitat, functions, the patient, etc.). Two of these, the origin of animals and their properties, abilities and inclinations, receive a more detailed treatment.

Opis:
A number of historic wells and springs from which drinking water was drawn until the mid-20th century have survived in Warsaw. The development of the municipal water-pipe network at the end of the 19th century made them obsolete, resulting in their gradual transformation into monuments of material culture. The wells in which the mechanism for drawing water was destroyed have became "dead" architectural objects and are no longer perceived as springs. Their architecture and treatment of details are often very elaborate. The systematic decline of the quality of drinking water drawn from the Vistula River has resulted in the necessity to give the public an access to strategic deep wells and to drill new ones. The new wells, built very fast in order to deliver good quality drinking water to the population, are purely utilitarian structures lacking the architectural splendour typical of their historic counterparts. The activity of drawing drinking water from the well has become a social phenomenon in Warsaw. This can be perceived as a positive process as it creates and strengthens community ties so precious in a modern city. This process should be facilitated by thoughtful design of wells as public places to provide an attractive architectural framework for drawing drinking water. The new and historic wells should create a legible sequence of beautiful places, enhancing the city. Because of their special importance to communal life and public health these structures should be treated as the "holy graves" within the city's urban structure.

Opis:
Autor formułuje postulat wykorzystania definicji kognitywnej do opisu stereotypów tworzących polską mapę mentalną, a opis ten traktuje jako istotny czynnik społecznej i narodowej autorefleksji Polaków.
The analysis of the Polish public discourse reveals that geographical proper names and their derivatives are used not only to identify places and buildings or structures, but also to label stereotyped images of Europe and Asia, the Mediterranean Sea and Mount Everest, Byzantium and Atlantis, Pcim and Mława, Woronicza street and Place Pigalle. A networks of these images constitutes a „mental map”, superimposed over and relatively independent of geographical and political maps. A mental map is selective, i.e. it disregards the majority of real places and structures, and marked in the national sense. To two basic dimensions — longitude and latitude — it adds a third one: that of verticality, which is used to valuate the entities under consideration. Therefore objects on mental maps, in contrast to traditional maps, are grouped according to the similarity or discrepancy of their features and values. Mental maps change in time, as does the ability to read them. In social discourse there exist a number of crisscrossing mental maps (national, based on social groups, on particular social environments, worldviews, typical of a given generation, etc.), which constitute an important though still poorly known component of the cultural code of a given linguistic community at a particular time. By omitting to define proper names, contemporary lexicography does not contribute to a greater understanding of mental maps. In the present article the author proposes to use the cognitive definition to describe the stereotypes which constitute the Polish mental map, which description is treated as an important factor of the social and national reflection of Poles on themselves.

Escarpment Area
Warsaw
Opis:
The physical and functional structure of Warsaw was determined by natural local environment - the Vistula valley with a high Escarpment on its left bank, where magnificent buildings were located, built in harmony with nature. The Warsaw Escarpment represents the priceless value in town with its green and the landscape open to the horizon, because of its rarity - single eminence on the city area. Contemporarily there are many recommended and more frequently observed methods of planning the cities, which should assure their sustainable development. But to reach that aim it is demanded, that built environment should be treated in the same way as natural. Both environments should be developed equally and simultaneously in the scale which is clear and understandable by citizens. The correct solution of the question for optimal integration of natural and artificial reality is the first problem of models of settlements for sustainable development. So it seems to everybody, that the unique situation of Warsaw needs to be enhanced. There is only one important priority: to preserve the natural landscape of Vistula Valley and Warsaw Escarpment. Opening Warsaw for the Vistula river by realising a continuous system of pedestrian paths in the area of the Escarpment as well as shaping the landscape there, will create a sustainable city form and will make the public greatly value it. It will also become important element in the historic process of the restoration of our capital.

Opis:
The national heritage of landscapes is one of the most valuable goods of the material legacy of national culture. Cultural landscape is of great social significance for the maintenance of the tradition of seeking national roots and identity. Over centuries, the landscape has been shaped in accordance with the characteristic traits of a given region, natural environment and national culture, and featured the diversity of ethnic cultures. Postwar years brought evolving landscape management inconsiderate and unattractive urban and rural development as well as economically unrelated forms of economic management. General confusion and a lack of identity of the site of the socalled little homeland call for a common awareness of the need for extending protection over entire areas of the cultural landscape in their conserved historic shape. Conservation practice, together with theoretical knowledge acquired during the protection of historic landscapes, paves the way to novel, world-wide trends in cultural heritage protection. It extends protection over not merely individual and collective complexes of historic property, but also moulded landscape areas, cementing the diversified conservation issues of the protection of all of its cultural ingredients in a coherent entity. Harmonious cultural and measured laid-out landscape, settlement landscape, industrial landscape and landscapes of linked natural and technological elements, battlefield landscapes and religious landscapes, with their individual, characteristic features, are a manifestation of national culture and tradition. To preserve the cultural heritage of landscapes it is necessary to devise mechanisms of sustainable development, in which the rank of culture, tradition and history of a region will equal its economic counterpart. Sustainable natural cultural and economic development increasingly resorts to the activation of tourism, involving the growing economic importance and dimension of historic landscapes and their promotion. A link between history and transformation may be seen in the cultural landscape, which plays an ever larger role in the cultural heritage protection strategy within the European Union.

Opis:
The magnates' manors, which were palaces or mansions with farming facilities, go back in tradition to the middle ages. Similarly to those of other regions, the fate of the Silesian estates was brutally changed by the World War II. After 1945 the majority of land estates became the State property. Since that time, most of them have been gradually and systematically deteriorating, and finally getting destroyed, both in their architectural and space substances. In this paper an effort has been made to draw attention to the cultural values of both the whole space distribution and setting, as well as to the individual architectural items belonging to the group of palace and farm buildings in Mańczyce and especially to its role in shaping the cultural landscape of Lower Silesian villages. Here, sriving along the road you can notice already from a distance the towers emerging from the park which surrounds the residence of Mańczyce. Approaching the village, you can see the other elements: oblong blocks of stables, high roofs of barns, tall walls of granary, as well as the chimney of distillery - a significant distinguishing element in the scenery. The Mańczyce palace draws two axes: the main one and the lateral one. There is a park in the north part of the main axis and a representative court in its southern side. From the east, the lateral axis is encircled by a yard shaped in an elongated rectangle around which the farm building are clustered; and from the west - by a small rectangular yard surrounded by residential buildings. Part of it is the remains of the former workers and servants' quarters of the begining of the 20th century. Both, the palace and most of the farm buildings, among others the distillery, have not been managed nor taken care of for the last 20 years. As long as they were in use in a proper or less proper way, their technical conditions were satisfactory. Since they became empty and not used, they have fallen relatively quickly into ruin. At the moment one can only cherish a hope that Mańczyce's estate as well as many others which remain in a similar situation will regain their former splendour. Maybe this will happen thanks to a rather quick and conscious action in protection of antique group of palace and farm buildings and mansions.

Preserved – Saved? On the Cultural Landscape and Manners of Its Shaping is a collection of texts – the result of two conferences organised in July 2000 and September 2002 by the Borussia Cultural Community society. The leitmotif of both meetings was the cultural landscape as well as the possibilities of its shaping and protection, while the point of departure was the rural landscape and the region of Warmia and Mazuria. The authors include persons professionally associated with the protection of historical monuments and preservation, as well as the owners of historical objects. The book is divided into three parts, the first being Historia – Dziedzictwo – Zmiany (History – Legacy – Changes), bringing the reader closer to the cultural legacy of Warmia and Mazuria, not merely the historical aspects but also from the present-day perspective. The second part, entitled Współczesność – Projekty – Realizacje (Contemporaneity – Projects – Realisations), contains texts about the discussed issues on a local level as well as a wider, supraregional one. Finally, the part on Siedziby – Losy – Ludzie (Residences – History – People) describes the personal experiences of various people who decided to tame the alien element and begin a new life under an “old roof”. The merits of the books include its handy size, hard cover, and lavish illustrations. The publication is enhanced by biogrammes of authors, presented at the end. The only flaw is the absence of topographic references. Although the major part of the publication deals with Warmia and Mazuria, it also contains texts about Lithuania or Sweden. The book is addressed to the lovers of Warmia and Mazuria, historians of art, conservators and laymen.

Opis:
The small fortified castle in Korzkiew near Cracow was built in the middle of the fourteenth century by the Syrokomla gentry family. The castle towers over the river valley of the Korzkiewka, the left-hand tributary of the Pràdnik, along the outskirts of the Ojców National Park. The castle lies 13 kilometres from the centre of Cracow, and has been the object of interest of tourists from the second half of the eighteenth century. Its defensive character is emphasised by location over a valley with a historical trade route towards Silesia. To the north, the castle is composed of a threewing main building, and the defensive wall, encircling it from the south, includes two towers and a gate house. The castle was inhabited until the end of the eighteenth century, and in about 1820 it was abandoned after its owners built a wooden-brick manor house at its foot. From that time on, the castle gradually turned into a ruin. Attempts at its revival in the mid-twentieth century ended in partial success: the castle ruins were thoroughly examined and protected. Not until the building was taken over by the young architect Jerzy Donimirski, related to the Wodzicki family, the former owners of the castle, did research and conservation progress at an impressive rate. Up to this day, the defensive walls have been rebuilt, including the gate house – the permanent residence of the owner and his family. The main building, under a roof and safeguarded, awaits an improvement of the financial situation of the owner and the initiation of a time-consuming adaptation of the historical object for the purposes of a hotel. According to the investor, the castle will fulfil three functions: exposition – an exhibit showing the history of the building, commercial – an hotel together with a restaurant, and private – the owner's residence. The reconstruction of the castle is accompanied by the tourist development of the vast valley to the south, which is to contain the reconstructed manor house, a tavern, and a brewery. Bicycle and hiking routes, closely connected with suitable hinterland, facilitate access to the valley, both for motorised tourists and those using city transport. For several years now, the valley below the castle and part of the former suburbium are the side of sport, cultural and recreation events.

Opis:
Is the history of philosophy one of philosophical disciplines? Should not one give up pursuing the traditional history of philosophy on behalf of the history of philosophical culture as a historical discipline? Considerable divergences in defining the history of philosophy and its relation to philosophy and history show profound differences in the views on philosophy itself. The differences are an essential part of the history of philosophy. This paper does not intend to give a critical assessment of all positions that concern the relationship between the history of philosophy and philosophy. We shall address the issue of consequences of historicism that bear on the history of philosophy. The main negative point of reference will R. Rorty's standpoint, which is representative of the radical version of historicism. The American neo-pragmatist's manners of pursuing philosophy and the relations between them will be submitted to criticism. In the perspective of radical historicism (historical and cultural relativism) the inquiries on the history of philosophy have no strictly philosophical importance. They may be cognitively interesting only from the historical point of view, for the history of culture, to be precise. Moderate historicism does not mean acceptance for the relativistic theory of truth. It makes us reconsider the issue of the difference between true knowledge and adequate knowledge, the difference well-known in tradition. Overcoming radical historicism prepares grounds for the pursuit of the history of philosophy as a philosophical discipline, the discipline that studies the history of philosophical problems in their variability and permanence.
