    Opis:
    The article discusses problems of designing an ideal book, responding tocurrent market needs. It shows the design goals and difficulties in their fulfillment.Based on analysis of the works of Przemek Dębowski, an outstanding contempo-rary graphic designer, and his interview, attempts were made to obtain the rightmethod of graphical implementation. Important elements of work on the book anddesign decisions have been specified, showing them in the light of the enforcedrules, in particular the concept of congenial typography. It was emphasized that a well-designed book is an integrated whole of visual elements, each being equallyimportant. Dębowski’s views on design mechanisms, that deserve special attention,are summarized. At the same time, an idea is emphasized that the close cooperationof all the book's authors in order to obtain a reader-friendly edition is a value of its own.

    In the collection of Łódź Book Art Museum, among the stored exhibits, unused matrices for casting fonts from before World War II have been discovered unexpectedly. Library and archival research, as well as comparative graphic research were carried out to determine the typeface provenance. It was established that the typeface family called Brygada was made in the Warsaw type foundry Jan Idźkowski and Co. on the occasion of the anniversary of Poland’s independence in1918. The Museum has prepared a casting machine for casting fonts from preserved matrices, and at the same time a team of graphic designers has digitized, supplemented the character set, and expanded the typeface family under the name Brygada 2018. Computer fonts were made available as public domain.

    In mobile media, there are many interesting apps about typography, but only few are equipped with tools that allow exploring the important role of typography in graphic design. This article presents several examples of digital typeface catalogues. Based on these examples and tools of Aquafadas DPS and Adobe InDesign software, an original app SPECIMEN for tablets has been created. For this purpose, 15 different typefaces have been chosen. The created app presents all the characteristics of type-faces and possibilities of their use. The E-catalogue also contains the information about the available license, which is important when planning the purchase. The information about the languages of prepared sets of characters is presented. An equally important part about the designers includes short biographical notes, lists other important typefaces designed by them and links to the websites where one can find many more interesting, completed projects. This project has been tested, and on the basis of it, there have been made a number of proposals and described advantages and disadvantages of the Aquafadas DPS software.

    Po zagwarantowanym traktatem wersalskim plebiscycie mającym ustalić przebieg granicy polsko-niemieckiej na Górnym Śląsku, w 1921 roku wybuchło trzecie powstanie śląskie. 100 lat później Polska obchodziła uroczystą rocznicę tych wydarzeń. Wychodząc z założenia, że użyty w projekcie graficznym krój pisma nie tylko łączy w sobie dualizm elementu znaczącego i znaczonego, z których składają się słowa, lecz sam w sobie może być także nośnikiem autonomicznych znaczeń, w oparciu o pojęcia typografii kongenialnej, wernakularnej, transparentnej i znaczącej, podjęto próbę oceny identyfikacji wizualnej materiałów towarzyszących uroczystościom obchodów 100. rocznicy wybuchu trzeciego powstania śląskiego. Zaproponowano trzy alternatywne drogi tworzenia takiej identyfikacji (1. świadomie nawiązująca do przeszłości, 2. świadomie zrywająca z przeszłością, 3. Bazująca na współczesnych trendach graficznych, odwołująca się jednak do pewnych reminiscencji) i podkreślono, że zbiory muzealne i biblioteczne są nieocenionym źródłem do opracowania wyważonej i świadomej koncepcji projektu graficznego.Po zagwarantowanym traktatem wersalskim plebiscycie mającym ustalić przebieg granicy polsko-niemieckiej na Górnym Śląsku, w 1921 roku wybuchło trzecie powstanie śląskie. 100 lat później Polska obchodziła uroczystą rocznicę tych wydarzeń.     The Third Silesian Uprising broke out in 1921 after the plebiscite guaranteed by the Treaty of Versailles and regarding the Polish-German border in Upper Silesia. 100 years later, Poland celebrated the solemn anniversary of these events. Based on the concepts of congenial, vernacular, transparent and meaningful typography, an attempt was made to evaluate the visual identification of the materials accompanying the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Third Silesian Uprising, because – in the opinion of the article’s author – the typeface used in the graphic design (named Golonka) introduced too many redundant meanings, disturbing the message carried by the verbal and graphic elements. Three alternative ways of creating such identification have been proposed (1. consciously referring to the past; 2. consciously breaking with the past; 3. based on contemporary graphic trends, but referring to some reminiscences). It was also emphasized that museum and library collections are an invaluable source for developing a balanced and conscious concept for a graphic design.

    Artykuł podejmuje temat udziału tekstu pisanego w akcie kreacji świata gry komputerowej. Jego celem jest pokazanie, jak duży jest potencjał tej formy tekstów we współtworzeniu wizji gry wideo (powstającej w umyśle gracza) i podtrzymywaniu immersji. Aby ten cel zrealizować, autor poddał analizie materiał tekstowy pochodzący z gry Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East, turowej strategicznej gry komputerowej, której akcja toczy się w fikcyjnym, fantastycznym świecie Ashan. Teskt pisany, we wspomnianej grze, wpływa znacząco na odbiór świata przedstawionego i w znacznym stopniu determinuje odbiór także innych elementów gry, oddziałując na całe doświadczenie rozgrywki. Dowodzi tego zaprezentowana w artykule analiza fontów/krojów pisma, organizacji przestrzennej tekstów pisanych oraz znaczenia treści tych tekstów.
    This article is about functions of written text in video game space. It aims to show the true potential of the written text in creating a vision of game in player’s mind and in keeping him immersed. I analyzed text material from the Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East, a turn-based strategy video game which action takes place in the fictional, colorful, fantasy world of Ashan. The written texts in mentioned video game determines the player’s perception of the other elements in the game and affects his playing experience. The following analysis of fonts, space organization of written texts and their meaning proves that point.

    The article concerns the revitalization of the sixteenth-century typeface and its digitalization into a computer font. Research on historical prints in which Nowy Karakter Polski occurs is presented. The paper describes main problems of design process related to the reconstruction of characters from historical prints, and the addition of new glyphs necessary in the character set of modern font. A significant part of the design work concerned decorative alternate letters.

    Opis:
    Writing systems and typefaces embodimented in any form (letter sketches, designs of typefaces, resources of sorts and matrices, prints and manuscripts, printing specimens, type foundries catalogues, typefaces specimens) are objects worth to become museum objects. Based on these, the museum will generate knowledge about script and lettering through: giving insight into conceptual work on designs of typefaces, acknowledging about history of development writing systems and typefaces, storaging of materials for the future correct digitization of the typeface,saving typefaces and writing systems from total annihilation. Hence: the catalogue ofbasic types of artefacts relevant to process of embodiment the script was present; the benefits that can result from the deliberate and conscious collecting of this type of artefacts as museum objects was outlined; the importance of the museum collection in research on script, typefaces and writing systems and its preservation as an element of heritage was indicated.
