    Miasta konurbacji rybnickiej identyfikowane były jako ważne ośrodki wzrostu społeczno-gospodarczego. Odkrycie węgla kamiennego w latach 50. XX w. spowodowało gwałtowną industrializację, urbanizację i w konsekwencji monofunkcyjny rozwój obszaru. Współcześnie obserwuje się pewną dualność uwarunkowań demograficzno-społecznych i gospodarczych. Miasta stoją w obliczu wyzwań spowodowanych zmniejszaniem się liczby ludności, będącym wynikiem silnego odpływu migracyjnego. Z drugiej strony sytuacja ekonomiczna jest relatywnie korzystna, co sprzyja modernizacji gospodarczej obszaru. Górnictwo węglowe powoli traci swoją dominującą rolę i następuje dywersyfikacja gospodarki. W opracowaniu wskazano perspektywy rozwoju ośrodków miejskich konurbacji rybnickiej na podstawie ich potencjałów określonych w dokumentach strategicznych miast.
    The cities of the Rybnik conurbation used to be regarded as important centers of socio-economic growth. The discovery of coal in the 1950s lead to rapid industrialization, urbanization and, consequently, monofunctional development of the area. At present, a certain duality of demographic and social, as well as economic determinants is noticeable. The cities are facing challenges due to declining population, which is a result of strong migration outflow. On the other hand, the economic situation is relatively favorable, which is conducive to the economic modernization of the area. Coal mining is slowly losing its dominant role and is being followed by diversification of the economy. The study indicates perspectives for the development of urban centers in the Rybnik conurbation based on their potentials identified in strategic documents of the cities.

    Opis:
    Artykuł stanowi uzupełnienie badań w zakresie wyodrębnienia krajobrazów kulturowych Polski. Do badań wybrano 5 przemysłowych i zurbanizowanych regionów historyczno-kulturowych Polski południowej. Historycznie obszar badań należał do 3 państw. Styk układów przemysłowych i osadniczych przyczynił się do intensywnego rozwoju kolei na tym obszarze. Kolej nie wpasowuje się w granice wyznaczonych regionów, a z racji istotnej roli kolei w rozwoju i funkcjonowaniu tego obszaru, tej rozbieżności nie należy pomijać. Stworzono bazę linii kolejowych funkcjonujących w 1989 r. i 2019 r., przyporządkowując linie lub ich fragmenty do poszczególnych regionów i na jej podstawie dokonano analiz. Badania dowiodły, że na tym obszarze zatarły się różnice w stopniu rozwoju sieci kolejowej pomiędzy dawnymi państwami, a region historyczno-kulturowy konurbacja katowicka należałoby rozdzielić na dwa podregiony: konurbację katowicką i konurbację Rybnicką.
    This article is a supplement to research in the field of identifying the cultural landscapes of Poland. Five industrial and urbanized historical-cultural regions of southern Poland were selected for the study. Historically, the research area covered three countries. The interface between industrial and settlement systems contributed to the intensive development of railways in this area. The railway does not fit into the boundaries of the designated regions and, due to the important role of the railway in the development and functioning of this area, this divergence should not be overlooked. A database of railway lines operating in 1989 and 2019 was created, assigning lines or their fragments to individual regions. Based on this, analyses were made. Studies have shown that in this area the differences in the degree of development of the railway network between former countries have blurred, and the historical-cultural region of the Katowice conurbation should be divided into two subregions: the Katowice conurbation and the Rybnik conurbation.

    Przedmiotem opracowania jest świadomość i tożsamość regionalna mieszkańców wybranych miast konurbacji rybnickiej. Celem jest zdefiniowanie obszaru, na terenie którego żyją respondenci, i ich stosunku do niego. Mieszkańców konurbacji rybnickiej cechuje różnorodny poziom świadomości i tożsamości regionalnej. Dowiedziono, że dominujący typ zabudowy występujący na terenie dzielnicyjest dobrymwyznacznikiem do wydzielenia obszarów badań. Pociąga on za sobą bowiem długość zamieszkania i stanowi wyznacznik kwalifikacji do grupy autochtonów i przyjezdnych. Wykazano liczne różnice w podejściu do regionu między tymi dwiema grupami.
    The subject is a regional identity and consciousness of residents of selected cities Rybnik conurbation. The aim is to define an area in which respondents live and their relationship to it. Population is characterized by diverse Rybnik conurbation identity and consciousness. Demonstrated that the predominant type of construction to occur in the district is a good indicator for the separation ofresearch areas. Itentails because the length ofresidence and an indicator of ąualification to the group of natives and visitors. Demonstrated numerous differences in the approach to the region between the two groups.

    Opis:
    Przedmiotem badania są zmiany w dynamice oraz w pozycji społeczno-gospodarczej miast i gmin wiejskich tworzących bezpośrednie otoczenie konurbacji katowickiej oraz rybnickiej. Zgodnie z koncepcją suburbanizacji A. Lisowskiego i M. Grochowskiego (2007), możemy je interpretować w kategoriach suburbanizacji.
    The subject of investigation is the change in dynamics and socio-economical position of cities and rural communes, creating the direct neighbourhood of Katowice and Rybnik conurbations. According to the conception of sub-urbanisation by A. Lisowski and M. Grochowski (2007) we can interpret them in categories of suburbanisation. Firstly - in the group of five features investigated were located as follows: a) the number of population, which changes can be interpreted in categories of sub-urbanisation phases, b) the number or working in market services, reflecting the basie differentiations of labour market as well as the degree of advancing in the process of economy tertialisation, c) the number of business entities, evidencing the potential of this activity sphere, d) the number of dwellings completed - as one of main measures of living conditions, and in the wider context the index of urbanisation process advancing as well e) the length of canalisation network - as in the previous case we deal here - in narrower case with the degree of the basie infrastructural needs providing, while in the wider - with indirect measure of urbanisation. The inerease in the length of canalisationnetwork in the surroundings of individual cities or settlement complexes can point at the direction and intensity of sub-urbanisation process. Secondly - the thesis of temporal-spatial conformability of socio-economical transformations does not find arguments here. The size of area, different degree of hitherto existing management, features of functional structure are some of basie conditions influencing slightly other directions of transformations in direct neighbourhood of complicated settlement patterns. The situation looks similar in the case of Katowice and Rybnik conurbations. Demographic and economic-infrastructural characteristics show other maxima within the rangę of changes dynamics. Thus, both of considered settlement patterns should be treated slightly differently, and only in the part similarly to each other. It most of all results from the nearest neighbourhood and simultaneously with permanently advancing process of development of transitional zonę between them.
