    Initially, property damages in the Archdiocese of Poznań were difficult to determine. It happened because the things were inventoried carelessly, the parish archives were destroyed and scattered because of hostilities and finally, the painful decisions of communist regime in the People's Republic of Poland. In the years 1939-1956 in the Archdiocese of Poznań the temples, chapels and church buildings were destroyed. The interior of the churches were designedly devastated i.e. pews, confessionals, ambos, floors, organs and liturgical things. Polish literary work was underestimated because of racism so most of the parish libraries were devastated. Works of art were destroyed or stolen and then exported. Only a few dozen out of the hundreds of pre-war churches and chapels could have fulfilled the sacred functions. The other buildings needed at least to be cleaned and more often to be rebuild or a thorough renovated. However, many monuments, church things, works of art, books and magazines were saved. People kept and hid these things in their houses even with putting their life at risk. It should be noted that the scale of destruction and property damages at that time is not everything what happened. Much more important were losses of life in the Archdiocese of Poznań. Almost one-third of the clergy did not survive the war.

    Żądania „Solidarności” wobec władz komunistycznych dotyczące wolności słowa w radiu i telewizji. Formujący się na początku lat 80. Niezależny Samorządny Związek Zawodowy „Solidarność” od pierwszych momentów swojej działalności walczył o wolność mediów, likwidację monopolu władz komunistycznych w radiofonii i telewizji, dopuszczenie do głosu niezależnych środowisk. Rozpoczynał tuż przed wybuchem stanu wojennego od żądań dostępu do radia i telewizji dla siebie oraz dla wszystkich środowisk odgrywających istotną rolę w życiu publicznym kraju. W czasie obrad Okrągłego Stołu opozycjoniści domagali się likwidacji Komitetu do spraw Radia i Telewizji oraz stworzenia systemu mediów poddanego kontroli społecznej. Celem artykułu jest prezentacja wyników badań polegających na analizie głównie materiałów źródłowych (oficjalnych dokumentów, doniesień prasowych) wytworzonych w 80. latach, a odnoszących się do poglądów i żądań przedstawicieli „Solidarności” dotyczących pluralizmu w mediach elektronicznych.
    Demands of Solidarity against communist authorities concerning freedom of speech on radio and television. Independent Self-governing Trade Union “Solidarity” which was founded in the early 1980s fought for media freedom, eliminating the monopoly of the communist authorities on the radio and television, allowing independent environments to speak, from the beginning of its activity. It started just before the outbreak martial law with demands of free radio and television access for itself and all environments which played important role in public life of the country. During Round Table talks oppositionists demanded liquidation of the Radio and Television Committee and creating media system which would work under social control. The aim of the article is to present findings based on analysis of source materials (official documents, press reports) which were created in the 1980s and referred to opinions and demands of the representatives of Solidarity concerning electronic media pluralism.

    A national spirit derives directly from a sense of national identity, a sense of having a common language, culture, traditions and history. A national spirit also encompasses religious values as in this case the Roman Catholic Church. This religion is the very foundation of the national identity as it identifies the beginning of the Polish nation in 966 AD and has remained the common thread throughout the last 1050 years of our history. Over this millennium the nation has been exposed to numerous challenges but three national characteristics seem to dominate throughout – democratic governance, national hospitality to strangers and a respect for the deceased. National identity, as opposed to the national spirit, is rooted more in current cultural interpretations and is subject to manipulation by such factors as cultural trends, current governments or external pressures from abroad. Three distinct periods can be recognized in the development of the national spirit in the last 100 years. In 1914–1944 there was the rush to statehood, a brief independence and defeat at the hands of our two neighbors. In 1944–1989, the Polish People’s Republic era, Soviet dominated government unrepresentative of its people and actively fighting against the national spirit, for example the Catholic religion. 1989–2017 mark a new era with governments preoccupied with a rush to globalization and integration into supranational structures such as the global markets and the European Union, actively suppressing many national characteristics in order to be more global in its image and acceptance. The role of the Catholic Church and institutions in the USA was fundamental in maintaining that national spirit, especially in the first two periods. Great Poles such as Jan Ignacy Paderewski were instrumental in returning Poland onto the world map but also the Catholic Church helped in spreading the message resulting in huge rush to the ranks of Polish volunteers, which then were able to defend the new nation against Bolshevik aggression in 1919/1920. During the second period the Catholic Church was instrumental in stressing the milestone of 1966, when Poland was celebrating a millennium of her nationhood. The communist authorities were celebrating statehood trying desperately to separate this momentous occasion from any role of the Catholic Church in its creation. It was the message of Poland and US based Polish clergy such as Cardinal Wyszynski and bishop J. Krol that stressed that it was the Roman Catholic religion that created the nation and later the state and its absolutely fundamental role. That message was then taken up by the first Polish Pope, John Paul II, who visited the USA seven times. In conclusion the role of the Catholic Church now is to preserve the national spirit when it is challenged with new ideas such as globalization and multiculturalism. Religion is progressively seen and propagated by the new social media platforms as a brake on progress of humanity and needs to be discouraged whenever possible. Poles as a nation still retain our identity and God, Honor and Fatherland are our signpost for the future.

    Biskup Czesław Kaczmarek, ordynariusz kielecki, był więźniem politycznym w czasach komunizmu w Polsce od 20 stycznia 1951 roku do września 1956 roku. W więzieniu śledczym Ministerstwa Bezpieczeństwa Publicznego (MBP) przy ul. Rakowieckiej w Warszawie poddawano go brutalnemu i długiemu śledztwu przez 967 dni. Funkcjonariusze śledczy przejęli w tym okresie dziewiętnaście osobistych listów, które bp C. Kaczmarek usiłował nielegalnie przesłać z celi więziennej do prymasa Stefana Wyszyńskiego. Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą wypełnienia luki badawczej i przeprowadzenia analizy źródłoznawczej z uwzględnieniem krytyki zewnętrznej i wewnętrznej źródła. Duża objętość listów stanowi problem w ich kwalifikacji do kategorii „grypsów śledczych”. Treść merytoryczna więziennego diariusza pozwala na wysoką ocenę jego wartości historycznej. Listy były elementem udanej kombinacji operacyjnej śledczych MBP, którzy zdołali zrealizować założenia wynikające z instalacji stałego agenta celnego. Był on pośrednikiem w przekazywaniu nielegalnych listów biskupa oraz autorem bardzo obszernych donosów z celi. W zakończeniu artykułu sformułowano postulaty, co do dalszych możliwości badawczych w zakresie analizy źródeł z archiwaliów więziennych bp. Kaczmarka w kontekście przewlekłości postępowania pseudodowodowego, będącego komponentem stalinowskich procesów pokazowych.
    Bishop Czesław Kaczmarek, the Ordinary of Kielce, was a political prisoner under communist regime in Poland from 20 January 1951 to September 1956. He was subjected to a brutal and prolonged investigation for 967 days in the investigative prison of the Ministry of Public Security (MBP) on Rakowiecka Street in Warsaw. Investigating officers seized nineteen personal letters during this period, which Bishop C. Kaczmarek attempted to illegally send from his prison cell to Primate Stefan Wyszyński. This article is an attempt to fill the research gap and conduct a source analysis including external and internal source criticism. The large volume of the letters poses a problem in their classification as ‘prison kites’. The substantive content of the prison diary allows a high assessment of its historical value. The letters were part of a successful operational arrangement by MBP nvestigators, who succeeded in fulfilling the assumptions arising from the installation of a permanent customs agent. He was an intermediary in the transmission of the bishop’s illegal letters and the author of very extensive cell denunciations. The article concludes with demands for further research opportunities in the analysis of sources from Bishop Kaczmarek’s prison archives in the context of the prolonged nature of pseudo-evidence proceedings, a component of Stalin-era show trials.

    Problematyka artykułu koncentruje się wokół zagadnień związanych z postawą władz komunistycznych wobec podejmowanych przez rektorów Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego inwestycji remontowo-budowlanych. Złożoność polityki państwa wobec KUL-u w sferze inwestycji budowlanych wynikała z wielu czynników, które kształtowały stosunek władz partyjno-państwowych do władz uniwersyteckich. W latach 50. i 60. władze komunistyczne skutecznie przeciwdziałały wielokrotnie podejmowanym przez rektorów KUL-u próbom rozbudowy zaplecza lokalowego uczelni. Kierowane do władz powiatowych i wojewódzkich wnioski z prośbą o zezwolenie na budowę nowych gmachów czy na rozbudowę istniejących już budynków rozpatrywane były odmownie. W latach 70. wraz z dokonującymi się na KUL-u zmianami polityka państwa wobec podejmowanych przez nowe władze uczelni przedsięwzięć budowlanych zmieniła się. W konsekwencji już w latach 70. przystąpiono do stopniowej rozbudowy gmachu uniwersytetu, która właściwej dynamiki nabrała w latach 80.
    The issue of the article concerns issues related to the attitude of the communist authorities towards the renovation and construction investment undertaken by the rectors of the Catholic University of Lublin. The state policy towards building investments undertaken at the Catholic University of Lublin depended on the relationship of party-state authorities to this university. In the 50s and 60s, communist authorities opposed the attempts to expand the buildings of the university. Addressed to district and provincial authorities applications for permission to build and expand university buildings, were refused. In the 70s, with the changes that have taken place at the university, the attitude of the state to building investments undertaken by the new university authorities has also changed. As a result of these changes, it was possible to start a gradual development of the University’s buildings, which did not have the proper dynamics until the 80s.

    Wiodącym zagadnieniem artykułu jest charakterystyka problemów budownictwa sakralnego diecezji lubelskiej zawartych w stenogramach z przemówień i kazań biskupa sufragana lubelskiego Zygmunta Kamińskiego z lat 1978-1980, jak też przedstawienie opinii władz państwowych na temat osoby duchownego. Wprowadzenie do tych kwestii stanowi statystyczno-porównawcza prezentacja zapisów jego wypowiedzi, które były efektem zainteresowania władz aparatu bezpieczeństwa działalnością sufragana lubelskiego. Ważnym akcentem jest dostrzeżenie zaangażowania bp. Z. Kamińskiego w rozwój budownictwa kościołów i kaplic w diecezji lubelskiej w okresie PRL, które przejawiało się przede wszystkim w inspirowaniu wiernych, poprzez kazania i odwiedziny w parafiach do podejmowania inicjatyw budowlanych, ale także w przezwyciężaniu represji wynikających z egzekwowania przez władze komunistyczne przepisów prawa budowlanego. Troska bp. Kamińskiego o rozwój budownictwa sakralnego w diecezji wyrażała się również w składaniu przez niego próśb i wniosków budowlanych do władz administracji wyznaniowej różnego szczebla, ale także w szczegółowym rozpoznawaniu potrzeb budowlanych diecezji. Podejmowane przez władze komunistyczne różne formy przeciwdziałania aktywności pasterskiej biskupa okazały się nieskuteczne. I mimo że władze na szczeblu centralnym, mając na uwadze działania bp. Kamińskiego, ostrzegały, że nie można dopuścić do pojawienia się drugiego bp. Ignacego Tokarczuka, to jednak żadnymi restrykcjami nie zdołały „uciszyć” sufragana lubelskiego, który swoim słowem zachęcał i mobilizował diecezjan do podejmowania inwestycji budowlanych oraz duszpasterskich, mimo sprzeciwu władz państwowych, powtarzając, że każdy ma prawo do wyznawania swojej wiary i zaspokajania potrzeb religijnych w budynkach sakralnych.
    The main point of the article is the characterization of the issues of sacral construction in the Lublin Diocese contained in the transcripts of speeches and sermons of Lublin Suffragan Bishop Zygmunt Kamiński from 1978–1980, as well as the presentation of the opinion of state authorities on the figure of the clergyman. The introduction to these issues constitutes a statistical and comparative presentation of the records of his statements, which were the result of the interest of the authorities of the Security Service in the activities of the Lublin suffragan. An important emphasis is recognition of Bishop Z. Kamiński’s involvement in the development of the construction of churches and chapels in the Lublin Diocese during the communist period, which manifested itself primarily in inspiring the faithful, through sermons and visits to parishes aimed to undertake construction initiatives, but also in overcoming the repression resulting from the enforcement of construction laws by the communist authorities. Bishop Kamiński’s concern for the development of sacral construction in the diocese was also expressed in his submission of requests and building applications to the religious administration authorities at various levels, but also in his detailed recognition of the construction needs of the diocese. Various forms of counteracting the bishop’s pastoral activities undertaken by the communist authorities proved ineffective. Although the authorities at the central level, mindful of the actions of Bishop Kamiński, warned that the emergence of a second Bishop IgnacyTokarczuk was unthinkable, they failed to ‘silence’ the Lublin suffragan, who succeeded in encouraging and mobilizing diocesans to undertake construction and pastoral investments, despite the objections of the state authorities, and reiterating that everyone has the right to profess their faith and meet their religious needs in sacred buildings.

    Ks. dr Jan Wiacek (1900-1973) był duchownym diecezji sandomierskiej. Przez 13 lat był proboszczem w Radomiu, a następnie przez kolejne 20 lat w Koprzywnicy koło Sandomierza. Proboszczem parafii Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego w Radomiu-Glinicach został w okresie okupacji niemieckiej latem 1941 r. Po zakończeniu wojny kontynuował budowę tamtejszego kościoła parafialnego. W 1949 r. bp Jan Lorek, ordynariusz diecezji sandomierskiej mianował go proboszczem eksponowanej parafii Opieki Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Radomiu, pełnił także funkcję dziekana. Jego zasługą było spłacenie sporych, przedwojennych długów parafii. Restrykcje ze strony władz państwowych dotknęły go w 1950 r. Początkowo były to sankcje finansowe (niewspółmiernie wysokie podatki). Władze chciały także przymusowo dokwaterować na plebanię dodatkowych lokatorów. Próbowano go zastraszyć, nękano nocnymi telefonami i pogróżkami. Naciskano, by włączył się w działania ruchu tzw. „księży patriotów”, wspierających władze państwowe i występujących z krytyką hierarchii kościelnej. Kiedy stanowczo odmówił, władze państwowe zażądały usunięcia go ze stanowiska. Do tego celu wykorzystano dekret z 9 lutego 1953 r. Bp Lorek bronił ks. Wiącka, kierował odwołania do władz centralnych. Spór trwał osiem miesięcy, a w końcu przymuszony hierarcha udzielił ks. Wiąckowi urlopu. W lutym 1954 r. przeniósł go na probostwo w Koprzywnicy. Mimo podejmowanych starań po odwilży politycznej na przełomie 1956/1957 r. władze państwowe nie dopuściły do jego powrotu do Radomia.
    Rev. dr Jan Wiącek (1900—1973) was a cleric of the Sandomierz diocese. Wiącek was a parish priest in Radom for 13 years, and then in Koprzywnica near Sandomierz for another 20 years. He started leading the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Radom-Glinice in the summer of 1941 under the Nazi occupation. After the war ended, he continued to build the local church. In 1949, Bishop Jan Lorek, the ordinary of the Sandomierz diocese, put him in charge of the parish of the Care of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Radom; Wiącek also served as a dean. It was thanks to him that the parish repaid large pre-war debts. He was first troubled by restrictions on the part of state authorities in 1950. Initially these included financial sanctions (dis- proportionately high taxes). The authorities also wanted to forcibly accom- modate additional tenants in the presbytery. Rev. Wiącek was intimidated, harassed by night phone calls and threatened. The authorities insisted that Wiącek should join the movement of the so-called "patriotic priests" who supported the government and criticised the Church hierarchy. When he flatly refused, state authorities demanded that he be removed from his po- sition. To this end, they used the decree of 9 February 1953. Bishop Lorek defended Rev. Wiącek by submitting appeals to central authorities. The dispute lasted eight months; faced with pressure, the bishop finally granted Rev. Wiącek a period of leave. In February 1954 he transferred Wiącek to the parish in Koprzywnica. Despite efforts made after the political thaw of late 1956/early 1957, the state authorities did not allow him to return to Radom.

    After the Second World War communists took over the power in Poland. The main purpose of the ruling party was introducing the principles of Marxist philosophy. In the center of ideological fight was the Roman Catholic Church perceived as serious obstacle or even threat in achieving their goals. In the years 1980-1981, the Polish authorities again declared their will to normalize relations and to reactivate the Joint Commission of the Government and the Episcopate. The communists as the rulers counted on the help of the Church in calming social moods and normalizing the situation after the unrest and strikes that took place at that time. The talks however did not bring any significant effects. Only a few small matters were settled.
