- On analyzing the efficiencies of conventional groundwater treatment processes, as well as the efficiency of coagulation when used to remove iron compounds, the following became obvious: the products of Fe(II) oxidation to Fe(III) which formed in the course of the aeration process were not able to build settleable agglomerates, thus inhibiting their effective removal by sedimentation and filtration. The occurrence of high Fe(III) concentrations which was paralleled by the presence of organic pollutants (COD) suggested that some portions of these organics formed complexes with iron, and that the complexes were dispersed to a great extent. It seemed therefore advisable to include the coagulation process into the treatment train for the groundwater (after intensive aeration) in order to enhance iron removal. The efficiency of coagulation depended on the type of the coagulant used and increased with the increasing dose. Of the coagulants tested (alum, ferric sulphate, polyaluminium chloride PAX-XL 60 and lime), polyaluminium chloride yielded the highest removal efficiencies for iron compounds, coloured matter, turbidity and COD.
