Opis:
The Gothic church of the Holy Cross with a characteristic, single-pillar construction is one of the most interesting and, at the same time, oldest buildings of Kraków. It is localised in the town centre, neighbouring the Planty, i.e., the park founded on the place of old city fortifications. The church was built in two stages. The first structure, representing probably the Romanesque style, was erected around the turn of 11th century. It was followed by a Gothic church, whose constructing started from the eastern side of the chancel not later than in the early years of the 14th century. The stone used in the Holy Cross Church proves that in the Gothic times it was not only one of the essential building, but also decorative materials. Two main rock types: the finedetrital, Jurassic limestone with cherts from the Kraków region and the Istebna sandstone from a vicinity of Dobczyce were used for constructing purposes, while the fine-detrital Tertiary limestone from the Pińczów area was the material of minor significance. The northern and eastern walls of the chancel were erected of the broken stones. Stone elements are also present in plinths, wall pillars and window frames. The pillar supporting the palm vault of the nave is made of the Jurassic limestone and a medium-grained sandstone, while the Gothic ribs and the vault itself of the Tertiary limestone. Other rock types play the decorative role. The Dębnik limestone is seen in epitaph tablets and – in combination with the Sławniowice marble – in the church floor. The stones, both occurring outside and inside the church, show the signs of deterioration in the form of soiling, colour changes, efflorescences and chippings. Their intensity differs and depends on various factors. The most pronounced and dominating alterations that belong to the group no. II of stone deteriorations (i.e., colour changes / surface accumulations) affect the material used outside. The stone elements inside the church, thus unexposed to external factors, show lesser alterations. These changes belong mainly to the group no. I of deterioration (i.e., pit losses), being frequent in places but of low depth. The assessment of stone preservation is of particular importance in selecting proper methods of conservation that are focused on restoring the former appearance of stone elements of the church. For this reason, the authors described in details and classified into respective groups of changes all types of stone deterioration identified in the rocks used outside and inside the church. A geological report of this kind may help specialists establish a program of church conservation in the future. Identification of the most probable place of quarrying the rocks involved will also help in substituting damaged stone elements with new ones, if such an action is required.

Opis:
Sovetovanie o blagočesti (Совѣтованіе о благочестіи) is an anonymous text preserved in the archive of Lutsk Brotherhood of the Elevation of the Cross. It includes an internal renewal programme of the Orthodox Church in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which supposed to guarantee continuity of Orthodox hierarchy, restored during 1620–1621 by the Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophanes. Most scholars have treated the document as the collection of decisions of the local council deliberated in Kyiv under the chairmanship of Metropolitan Job Boretsky and was treated as an effect of the activity of new bishops. However, there are no historical sources confirming that such council actually took place. What is more, the document itself does not look like council’s resolutions. This is rather a list of recommendations and postulates prepared by believers, probably representatives of Lutsk Brotherhood. The document points out that on the one hand bishops are necessary for the normal functioning of the Church, on the other hand, puts forward a list of demands to them and emphasizes an important role of the laity.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at recreating the original appearance of a Gothic brick-skeleton church in Kanigowo near Nidzica upon the basis of architectural research. The preserved parts of the skeleton walls made it possible to recreate the original composition of the northern and southern elevation, and the retention of the mediaeval roof truss permitted the establishment of the shape of the roof. Upon the basis of these elements it became feasible to define the architectural form of a church with a unique wall construction. Up to now the church has not been the topic of a separate monograph.Upon the basis of conducted architectural studies it has been ascertained that the basic outline of the present-day solid of the church originates from the 15th century. Apparently, the preserved fragments of the skeleton church walls comprise an integral element of its Gothic construction unambiguously confirmed by the dendrochronological research performed by Prof. Marek Krapiec, and made it possible to establish the date of the erection of the brick-skeleton church as 1386. The titular church was built from the onset with the application of two types of construction. Three-fifths of the walls were made of stones and ceramic brick, plastered on both sides. The upper part of the church walls was made out of parallel wooden constructions - from the outside with brick filling, and from the inside with timber framing. The skeleton parts of the wall comprise a uniform construction with the king-post roof truss and possess a single system of joiners' assembly signs. The 14th century construction was covered with a high gable roof with monk-nun tiles and probably had skeleton gables, which constituted a uniform construction with the roof truss. The brick ground floor of the nave featured two entrance portals - western and southern. The nave was additionally lit with three windows arranged in the southern elevation wall while the northern elevation was devoid of all windows. The outer construction with the brick, nonplastered filling contrasted with the whitened walls of the ground floor, comprising the prime visual accent of the Gothic church elevations. The monument possesses exceptional values on a regional and national scale. Quite probably, it is the only preserved example of a mediaeval brick-skeleton sacral building in former eastern Prussia. Presumably, there is no analogous edifice in the whole of Poland and possibly in Europe. Its other distinguishable features include artistic assets, which at present are not totally discernible. The form of the Gothic outer construction of the walls - despite the fact that a major part was concealed beneath plaster - is particularly noteworthy. Thanks to the application in each repeated span of cross-crossing elements it was possible to attain a decorative, almost 'ornamental' design of the wooden skeleton, contrasted with the brick filling. The configuration of the outer skeleton construction does not limit itself to a mere technical role, but comprises a sui generis decorative frieze crowning the brick church walls. For those reasons, suitable emphasis on this extremely valuable original construction of the church wall in the course of future conservation is to be regarded as a priority task during the revalorisation of the monument in question.

Opis:
Konserwatorzy wydobyli i zakonserwowali relikwiarze, a trzy z nich poddali zostały specjalistycznym badaniom. Wybrano relikwiarz zawierający przezroczysty krzyż z cząstką Krzyża Świętego oraz dwa nieprzezroczyste obiekty: niebieski koralik i czarny paciorek. Obiekty zostały przeanalizowane metodami nieniszczącymi i nieinwazyjnymi. Stwierdzono, że krzyż relikwiarzowy jest wykonany z kryształu górskiego, koraliki wykonane są ze szkła. W miarę możliwości omówiono również pochodzenie obiektów oraz czas ich powstania.
In the years 2017–2020, comprehensive conservation and construction works were carried out within the crypt, basement and monastery of the Piarist church in Kraków. Numerous sensational findings were made during their course, including the discovery of 59 reliquaries in the mysterious stairs in the crypt's chancel. As the conservation and research work progressed, it became clear that the crypt beneath the church was originally the Chapel of the Holy Stairs, a unique historical object on the world scale. Conservators excavated and conserved the reliquaries, and three of them underwent detailed examination. A reliquary containing a transparent cross with a particles of the True Cross and two opaque objects, a blue bead and a black bead, were selected. The objects were analysed by non-destructive and non-invasive methods. It was found that the reliquary cross is made of rock crystal, the beads are made of glass. The possible origin of the objects and the date of their manufacture were also discussed.

argument over the diocesan affiliation of Lublin in the 15th century
Opis:
The article is an attempt to direct the reader’s attention to the doubts concerning credibility of the sources indicating the time and circumstances of bringing the relics of the True Cross to the Lublin Dominican Church. The existing sources basically differ from each other in this respect, which made researchers take an attitude towards credibility of the accounts, or make attempts at reconciling their contents. An analysis of the context of the events connected with the possible circumstances of bringing the relics from Ruthenia to Lublin shows that it is possible to fix the date of the event in the first decades of the 15th century and to indicate King Władysław II Jagiełło and the Polish Dominicans as the people who were especially involved in it. At the same time it means that it is necessary to depart from the literal understanding of Jan Długosz’s account of the circumstances of bringing the relics to Lublin, and also to ask the question about the causes why he made changes in his account of the events.
