Opis:
This paper aims to characterize and interpret the trends in reserves, resources, and in the mine production of crude kaolin and output of beneficiated kaolin between 1999 and 2015 in the Czech Republic. With nearly 1.2 billion tonnes of total resources, kaolin belongs to the key industrial minerals of the Czech Republic. With an annual output of about 3 to 4 million tonnes of crude kaolin and of around 0.6 million tonnes of beneficiated kaolin, the Czech Republic ranks among the top European and world kaolin producers. Mine production of crude kaolin has been relatively stable since 1997, while the output of beneficiated kaolin has been increasing gradually during the same period. The increased production and yield of beneficiated kaolin resulted from the use of progressive methods in kaolin processing, primarily high-intensity electromagnetic separation. The positive growth trend was not a reflection of the stability of the extractive sector and domestic industry, but it was the result of a pro-export orientation. The amount and share of exports are continuously increasing and constitute 80% of the entire kaolin production sector at the present time. The only exception occurred in 2005–2008, when exports declined by one-half as a result of the government´s export restrictions. The results of analyses were not optimistic for the Czech economy and indicated a sharp downturn in the domestic mining industry. Moreover, a similar situation exists in the case of other essential industrial minerals such as feldspar, clays, and silica sand.
W artykule dokonano charakterystyki i interpretacji trendów dotyczących zasobów, produkcji surowego oraz wzbogaconego kaolinu w Republice Czeskiej w latach 1999−2015. Zasoby kaolinu szacowane są na około 1,2 mld ton i należą do najważniejszych przemysłowych surowców mineralnych Republiki Czeskiej. Z roczną produkcją około 3−4 mln ton surowego kaolinu i około 0,6 mln ton wzbogaconego kaolinu, Czechy należą do czołowych europejskich i światowych producentów kaolinu. Wydobycie surowego kaolinu jest stosunkowo stabilne od 1997 r., natomiast produkcja wzbogaconego kaolinu stopniowo wzrasta. Rosnąca produkcja i coraz lepsza jakość kaolinu wzbogaconego wynika z zastosowania zaawansowanych metod przeróbki, głównie separacji elektromagnetycznej.

Opis:
The aim of this research was to remove sulphur and alunitic parts by the flotation method from alunitic kaolin obtained from the Balikesir-Sindirgi region of Turkey, which is not currently used by the ceramic industry because of its high sulphur content. In the process, mineral alunite was floated while kaolinite was depressed. The effect of pre-concentration on the flotation process was also investigated. Pre-concentration included several processes such as wetting, mechanical scrubbing, and screening for removal of fine alunite particles and colouring oxides from kaolin as well as screening after consecutive milling for the separation of hard minerals such as quartz from kaolin. After the pre-concentration and flotation processes, kaolin concentrate having a SO3 content of 0.48% was obtained with a sulphur removal efficiency of 88.55%, and this kaolin was coded as F4. Afterwards, the use of F4 kaolin in the ceramic industry was investigated. For this purpose, the F4 kaolin was used in angobe preparation, and the angobes prepared were used for the production of floor and wall tiles. The properties of the angobes were also compared to those of commercial floor and wall tile angobes from a ceramic factory. These tests indicated that the floor and wall tile angobes prepared by using F4 kaolin could be used as an alternative for the angobes currently used by the factory.

The results of neutron radiography studies on convective drying of kaolin cylinders are presented. The sample shrinkage and loss of water during drying was easily observed on registered neutron radiograms. The saturation of the sample with water was estimated in terms of the neutron effective macroscopic cross-section. The results are comparable to those of gravimetric measurements and are discussed within the framework of simple theories of drying. The effect of the scattered neutrons is discussed in terms of the results of the MC simulations.

Opis:
A characteristic iron-containing halloysite sample from Turkey was subjected to acid leaching using organic and inorganic acids for removing iron impurities. The aim of this study was to compare the raw hydrated and dehydrated halloysites with the leached products. Hydrochloric acid and oxalic acid were chosen as leaching agents for the removal of iron impurities at 80 °C for 2.5 h. The physicochemical properties of the acid-treated halloysite were analyzed by XRF, XRD, FTIR, TGA, DTA, SEM, and TEM. The XRF results showed that the acid treatment caused the dissolution of minor amounts of Al3+ ions from the clay layer. The XRD results indicated that the crystalline structure was unchanged after the leaching. However, it was observed that the hydrated (1 nm) halloysite readily lost its interlayer water and was transformed to the dehydrated (0.7 nm) form. In addition, no visible effects of the acid treatment on the tubular structure of halloysite were detected in the SEM and TEM images. Typical pores of varying dimensions were observed in all of the samples regardless of their form or treatment. Furthermore, the TG-DTA and FTIR analysis results were similar for both the raw and the acid-treated samples.

Opis:
For ages, concrete has been used to construct underwater structures. Concrete laying underwater is a very complex procedure important to the success or failure of underwater projects. This paper elucidates the influence of alkali activator ratios on geopolymers for underwater concreting; focusing on the geopolymer concrete synthesized from fly ash and kaolin activated using sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solutions. The geopolymer mixtures were designed to incorporate multiple alkali activator ratios to evaluate their effects on the resulting geopolymers’ properties. The fresh concrete was molded into 50 mm cubes in seawater using the tremie method and tested for its engineering properties at 7 and 28 days (curing). The control geopolymer and underwater geopolymers’ mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, water absorption density, and setting time were also determined. The differences between the control geopolymer and underwater geopolymer were determined using phase analysis and functional group analysis. The results show that the geopolymer samples were optimally strengthened at a 2.5 alkali activator ratio, and the mechanical properties of the control geopolymer exceeded that of the underwater geopolymer. However, the underwater geopolymer was determined to be suitable for use as underwater concreting material as it retains 70% strength of the control geopolymer.

Opis:
The mineralogy and thermal properties of two kaolin clay samples from Agua Blanca (Hidalgo-México) were determined by XRD, SEM-EDS, TGA-DSC techniques. Kaolin clay A contains a higher $Al_2O_3$ and lower impurities $(K_2O, TiO_2, Fe_2O_3)$ amount than kaolin clay B, while the SiO2 amount is similar for both kaolin clays. A theoretical approach was carried out by a thermodynamic analysis considering the chemical composition of both kaolin clay samples with the FactSage 7.3 software. Stability phase diagrams were obtained to different K2O content from 0.1 to 3 wt % and temperatures in the range from 600 to 1600°C based on the chemical composition of the kaolin clay samples. The main mineralogical compounds predicted are andalusite $(Al_2O_3•SiO_2)$, K-Potash feldspar $(K_2O•Al_2O_3•6SiO_2)$, and the $SiO_2$ polymorphs (quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite) with small amounts of ferric-pseudobrookite $(Fe_2O_5Ti)$, and rutile $(TiO_2)$. As $K_2O$ content is increased, the amounts of mullite and tridymite decrease meanwhile the potash feld spar is increased at high temperatures. A liquid phase is formed at around 1350 and 1400°C for the kaolin clay samples A and B, respectively. The viscosity of the melt is increased for the evaluated $K_2O$ additions to 1400, 1500, and 1600°C.

Opis:
This study examined the effects rheological properties of different composition kaolin and kaolin geo-filler in polypropylene composites. Polypropylene composites with varying composition of kaolin geo-filler 0 wt%, 2 wt%, 4 wt%, 6 wt%, 8 wt%, and 10 wt% was prepared and compared with polypropylene composite with raw kaolin. Kaolin is an aluminosilicate based mineral filler was used to prepare geopolymer paste by combining with alkaline activator solution. The polypropylene composite was compounded using a twin-screw extruder and the melt flow index was determined by a constant weight pressure of 2.16 kg at 230°C in 10 min. Knowing the melt flow index is necessary to predict and control the process, the study has demonstrated that the composition of kaolin filler and kaolin geo-filler affects the melt flow, melt density and surface morphology at varies composition. Composites with kaolin geo-filler have demonstrated high melt flow index process and having better distribution and flow.

This paper shows the results of using the modified kaolin by silane coupling agents in HDPE composite and the effect of surface modifications of fillers on the properties of polyethylene composites. In the first stage pure and modified kaolin was subjected to a number of tests in order to determine the backfill density, water and paraffin oil absorbability, the surface area and pore volume, the morphology of their grains, thermal analysis and the FT-IR spectroscopy. In the second stage the composites, which were moulded into the samples that could be subjected to further tests, were produced. The samples were characterised by the determination of the hardness according to Shore, the elasticity modulus, the tensile strength and tearing strength. The modification of the kaolin surface has resulted in a substantial improvement of the strength parameters of the obtained polyethylene composites.

This article deals with the basic principles of developing engobe compositions for facing and clinker ceramic bricks. The microstructure features of ceramic bricks have been studied, which must be considered when choosing the engobe composition and engobe products’ technology. The expediency of using alkaline and substandard kaolins as the main raw material, which improves the conditions for sintering ceramic coatings by applying the single annealing technology of construction ceramics, has been studied. Due to its higher annealing reactivity, compared to traditional clay materials, the experimental raw material in the engobe composition improves the adhesion of the coating to the ceramic base and increases the strength of the decorative and protective layer.
