Opis:
Issues related to justice and mercy, as well as God’s attributes have been, for centuries, the focal point of the Muslim theologians’ debates. Some theologians interpreted the God’s attributes such as hearing and seeing metaphorically used to avoid comparing God to created beings. Another controversial theological debate focused on the question of free will and predestination. One group of Muslim theologians maintained that because God is just, he creates only good and therefore only humans can create evil. The other group argued that God’s punishment of humans would be unjust because he himself created their evil deeds. However, this particular view was rejected by other Muslim theologians on the grounds that it limits the scope of God's creation, when the Qur’ān clearly states that God is the Creator of everything. Many other theological controversies occupied Muslim thinkers for the first few centuries of Islam, but by the 10th century the views of Islamic theologian al-Ash‘arī and his followers, known as Ash‘arites, prevailed and were adopted by most Muslims. This study, therefore, traced and explored the growth and development of these theological schools from their first appearance to the period of al-Ghazālī and, moreover, al-Ghazālī’s critique of both philosophy and theology were explored and analyzed.

Opis:
The discussion on reforms in Islam has been ongoing in the Islamic world for many decades. This trend was also present in Iran, where it gained particular intensity after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. It was religious intellectuals who took the main debate upon themselves. Their activity and efforts concentrated around the problem of the adaptation of Islamic rules to the modern world. One of their proposals was to change the classical method of theological reflection. Although Islamic theology (kalam) during the first centuries of Islam become the queen of all Islamic sciences, contemporary Iranian thinkers are calling for the development of a new paradigm of religious reflection – a new kalam, kalam-e jadid, which would be characterized by rationality, openness to interpretation and criticism and would remain in constant dialogue with the non-religious sciences. The paper is an attempt to reconstruct the main assumptions of Iranian kalam-e jadid based on the views of its most important advocates.

Opis:
The purpose of the study is to introduce the question of intra-Sunni ideological rivalry in modern Turkey. An attempt has been taken to understand the contemporary, competing Islamic intellec-tual thoughts in Turkish society with special attention to Salafism – perceived as an important religious narrative. Thus, some fundamental questions addressed in the article are: How does Salafism operate in modern Turkey and what position has it gained within Turkish Islam? What challenges does it pose to the Islamic philosophical and mystical tradition? Which strands within Salafism are gaining prominence in Turkey? How do Salafists define Islam, and how should politics and society be constructed according to their theology? Although the study is based on the questions posed above, its aim is not only to find the correct answers, but also to assist in a better comprehension of some of the intricate issues of Salafism in Turkey and its implications for the process of cultural resilience, which is subjected to shifting dynamics.
