Opis:
The hybrid adhesive bonded and riveted joints have wider and wider application in different branches of engineering: aerospace, mechanical, civil etc. The hybrid joints' strength is 1.5 to 3 times higher than only adhesive bonded joints' strength. The hybrid joints characterize higher reliability during long-term working. In this article we present the influence of rivets' lay-out geometry on the hybrid adhesive bonded/riveted joints response to mechanical loading. Experimental research was carried using 3-D digital image correlation system ARAMIS. This system enables monitoring of the deformation processes of the hybrid joint specimen up to failure. We analysed the state of deformation of the adhesive bonded double-lap joints reinforced by different numbers of rivets. The hybrid joint specimens were subjected to the uniaxial tensile test. Moreover, the influence of geometry of individual number of rivets' layout (rivets arranged in one or more rows) for hybrid joint strength was studied. Experimental research was completed and supported by the computer simulations of the whole deformation processes of metal layers (aluminum), adhesive layers and rivets. Numerical simulations were conducted with the ABAQUS programme. The analysis of stress concentrations in different parts of the hybrid joint and their behaviour up to failure were investigated. Finally, the analysis and the comparison of the obtained results confirmed the influence of rivets' lay-out geometry not only on rivets joints but also on the hybrid adhesive bonded/riveted joints.
Połączenia hybrydowe klejowo-nitowe znajdują coraz szersze zastosowania w różnych dziedzinach inżynieryjnych: mechanice, lotnictwie, inżynierii lądowej i innych. Symulacje komputerowe przeprowadzono w programie ABAQUS. Analiza i porównanie otrzymanych wyników potwierdzają wpływ geometrii rozmieszczenia nitów na wytrzymałość nie tylko połączeń nitowych, ale również połączeń typu hybrydowego.

Opis:
One of the most important trends in engineering biomechanics is experimental and numerical analysis of the stress and strain state existing in organs subject to a heavy load; e.g., the knee and hip joints. Clinical tests experimental and numerical studies on design of implants replacing damaged organs are also of crucial importance in development of biomechanics. The research is focused on determination of loads, experimental techniques as well as on simplifications assumed in measurements and applied models. The conducted investigations were concerned with estimation of mechanical behaviour of hip and knee implants after arthoplasty. The experimental tests on both the real objects and models were performed. Numerical simulation was made by using the finite element method. The tests have proved that from the biomechanical point of view proper selection of endoprothesis is of crucial importance for achieving positive long-term results of alloplasty.
Przeprowadzone badania poświęcone zostały ocenie mechanicznej współpracy sztucznych elementów stawu biodrowego i kolanowego w warunkach modelowych, jak i metodą symulacji numerycznej, metodą elementów skończonych. Badania udowodniły duże znaczenie prawidłowej selekcji endoprotez z punktu widzenia biomechaniki układu na długoterminowe powodzenie alloplastyk.

Opis:
Riveting is still one of the main joining methods of thin-walled aircraft structures. Such features as simplicity of implementation, possibility of two different material connection (e.g. metallic with non-metallic ones) and the fact that is it a well-known (reliable) method causes popularity of riveting. The never-ending attempt to obtain as low mass as possible (mainly to reduce fuel consumption) is the reason for using material of high specific strength in the aerospace industry. High strength titanium or aluminium alloys (e.g. 2024T3) and composite laminates (e.g. CFRP or Glare) are examples of such materials. The article deals with methods of connecting various materials. The paper presents advantages and disadvantages of different/selected connection types. Strength prediction and failure modes of mechanical joints are described for metallic as well as for composite components. Composites are complex materials having an anisotropic structure (and anisotropic mechanical properties) leading to various failure mechanisms. Main principles for appropriate joint design of composite laminate panels (laminate configuration and typical/specific geometrical dimensions) are indicated/specified. The bearing failure mechanism is accepted to be a safe progressive one. Mechanism of bearing (generally compressive) load transfer into composite laminates by shear of the matrix is analysed. Some examples of improvement bearing strength of laminates are presented according to literature. On the base of presented examples and bearing load transfer analysis, some conclusions for an appropriate solution of this problem are drawn.

Article discusses issues related to the weakened strength of the joints in conveyor belts. Joints are the weakest element of the belt and should be taken aimed at eliminating the errors made that may be caused by multiple factors. Every breakdown generates additional costs in the company so this is important to decrease their number. All analyzed joints were made using belts with steel cords. The results were obtained from the Conveyor Transport Laboratory at the Wroclaw University of Technology. The assessment showed a significant impact of the working defects on joint strength. Also the trend analysis performed on the samples of regenerated belts showed a linear decrease in strength along with the degree of regeneration.

This paper presents a vibration analysis of a multi-link surgical micromanipulator joint, based on its detailed mathematical model. The manipulator’s prototype contains 6 links with the diameter of 8–10 [mm] and with the length of the modules of about 130 [mm]. It is driven by brushless servomotors with worm and planetary gears, for which the total transmission ratio is above 1/10000. Regarding the low efficiency of micro-robot drive systems and its vibrations, a reliable joint model and its performance is crucial for the development of a high-precision control system. To achieve the required accuracy, modelling framework has been enriched with an advanced model of friction. Simulation results are presented and discussed.

Background. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of patients who underwent surgical treatment using the clavicular hook plate for diagnosed Rockwood Type 3 – Type 4 – Type 5 acromioclavicular joint separation. Material and methods. Patients who were operated with the diagnosis of acute traumatic acromioclavicular joint separation between the years 2017-2021 were evaluated retrospectively. Patients' age, gender, mechanism of injury, time to surgery, follow-up duration, and complications were evaluated. Functional results were evaluated using pre-op and post-op VAS and the Constant-Murley Shoulder Score. Results. A total of thirty patients admitted with the diagnosis of acromioclavicular joint separation were included. All patients underwent surgical treatment using the clavicular hook plate. Twenty (66.6%) patients were male and 10 (33.6%) were female. Seventeen of the patients were admitted due to sports injuries, 6 due to traffic accidents, and 7 due to workplace accidents. The patients were followed up for an average of 26.1 weeks. The Rockwood Classification was used for classification of injuries. Accordingly, 12, 13, and 5 of the patients had Type 3, Type 4, and Type 5 injury, respectively. While the mean pre-op VAS score was 7.4 (5-9), it was 1.8 (1-4) in the post-op period. The mean pre-op Constant-Murley score was 31.5 (22-42), compared to 85.1 (72-100) in the post-op period. The differences between the pre-op and post-op VAS and Constant-Murley Shoulder Scores were statistically significant. Conclusion. In this study, we achieved good functional results in the treatment of acromioclavicular joint separation by using a clavicular hook plate providing stable fixation and allowing early mobilization.

Opis:
The paper presents the analysis of the motion of the intermediate element in the Birfield-Rzeppa joint. The joint is applied, among others, in automotive vehicles as an element of the drive shaft. The cage along with the balls form the intermediate element of the joint. The vibration of the element is activated during the drive shaft rotation. The vibration is enforced kinematically by the mechanism constraints. The constraints are determined by the assumed clutch geometry. The aim of the paper is to determine the variability course of the kinematic quantities characterizing the intermediate element motion of the Birfield-Rzeppa constant velocity universal joint. If the transmission function and the second position function of the clutch lead to the fluctuation of the angular velocity value and the angular acceleration of the cage along with the balls, then vibration is generated within the joint. The paper shows that drive shaft interference can be reduced by using a vibration reduction system. The article does not present an analysis aimed at reducing vibrations. Only the need for its use in the case of serious disturbances has been demonstrated.

Opis:
Considering joints with unstiffened columns, the load capacity of an inner bolt-row being a part of bolts group defined by a flange capacity is directly proportional to a distance between bolts. In turn, a flexibility of the column flange in the inner bolt-row area depends not only on that distance but also on a flexibility of other basic joint components. Hence, that situation may occur, when internal forces in inner bolt-row will be greater than its capacity estimated as an equivalent of T-stub. This possibility has been taken into account in the standard [3] - see the rule in the point 6.2.4.2 (3). In practice, this rule is not implemented in calculations of this kind of joints. In this work, a simplified algorithm of these joints calculation as well as an example, where the need for force reduction in the inner bolt-row to the value of bolt resistance has occurred, were presented. Moreover, the influence of the aforementioned reduction on the joint stiffness was estimated.

Background. Clinically, functional instability (FI) of metacarpophalangeal joints (MCPJ) is not considered to represent a pathology. This excessive mobility can be detected by the application of external forces to a MCPJ at different angles. Our study aimed to measure the FI of 2nd to 5th MCPJ. Materials and methods. A group of 36 healthy right-handed individuals were enrolled. The value of FI was measured in millimeters and verified by a CT scan. Statistical calculations was made in Statistica v.10.0. Results. The largest values of the right and left-hand finger posterior displacement (FI) in the second to fifth MCPJ were obtained in the neutral position 0° (p<0.05). Measurements of volar displacement of the proximal phalanx second to fifth MCPJs in both hands revealed higher values at position 0° (p<0.05). Conclusions. 1. FI of the second to fifth MCPJs is determined by anatomical configuration and dynamic stabilizers. 2. Instability measurements show that posterior displacement of the proximal phalanges is greater by at least 1 mm in the 0° neutral position.

Opis:
In the second part of this paper the temperature distribution is analysed for a thermally uninsulated steel beam-to-column flange-plates and web-cleats joint after 15 minutes of its exposure to a fully developed fire. Two types of such a joint are considered separately, firstly the pure steel connection with a beam and a column evenly heated on all four sides and then the analogous one, but with a massive reinforced concrete floor slab lying on the upper beam flange. In the latter case the joint beam is heated only on three sides. In addition, in each of the analysed joint the beams of two sizes are analysed independently for comparative purposes. Those that are made of the bigger I-section have a more slender web, while the smaller ones are more stocky. However, the smaller I-section heats faster than the bigger one because the section factor calculated for it has a greater value. In general, it can be concluded that in all the joints considered by the authors the steel temperature turned out to be much lower than that measured outside these joints. Moreover, a significant difference is observed in the temperature values identified in the beam web and in the beam flanges. Finally, the temperature distribution obtained from a numerical simulation and identified in the selected cross-sections of the joint beam in the case of a joint with adjacent floor slab is referred to the analogous distribution recommended for use in such circumstances in the standard EN 1993-1-2.

Opis:
Estimation of hip joint loading is fundamental for understanding joint function, injury and disease. To predict patientspecific hip loading, a musculoskeletal model must be adapted to the patient’s unique geometry. By far the most common and cost effective clinical images are whole pelvis plain radiographs. This study compared the accuracy of anisotropic and isotropic scaling of musculoskeletal model to hip joint force prediction by taking patient-specific bone geometry from standard anteroposterior radiograms. Methods: 356 hips from 250 radiograms of adult human pelvis were analyzed. A musculoskeletal model was constructed from sequential images of the Visible Human Male. The common body position of one-legged stance was substituted for the midstance phase of walking. Three scaling methods were applied: a) anisotropic scaling by interhip separation, ilium height, ilium width, and lateral and inferior position of the greater trochanter, b) isotropic scaling by pelvic width and c) isotropic scaling by interhip separation. Hip joint force in one-legged stance was estimated by inverse static model. Results: Isotropic scaling affects all proportions equally, what results in small difference in hip joint reaction force among patients. Anisotropic hip scaling increases variation in hip joint force among patients considerably. The difference in hip joint force estimated by isotropic and anisotropic scaling may surpass patient’s body weight. Conclusions: Hip joint force estimated by isotropic scaling depends mostly on reference musculoskeletal geometry. Individual’s hip joint reaction force estimation could be improved by including additional bone geometrical parameters in the scaling method.
