Opis:
In contrast to the usual integration of migrant workers in the ‘bottom jobs’ on the labour market, the employment of Ukrainian workers in Hungarian electronics plants seems to take place in a more beneficial way. With the active mediation of temporary (temp) agencies, Ukrainian migrant workers are offered regular blue-collar assembly work, together with the same social rights and benefits as their local Hungarian colleagues. Relying, in our analysis, on the literature on industrial sociology, migration research and global value chains, we are developing a critical perspective in which migration and employment are not seen as separate spheres but as mutually reinforcing each other. We combine bottom-up empirical research based on interviews with workers and a sectoral inquiry on industrial and employment relations in the temp agency sector supplying multinational corporations. Our main argument is that complex contracting also means subtle controlling. Such contracting is not the cheapest form but it creates a different, efficient employment regime with dependent, controllable, flexibly available, ‘fluid’ employees. Employee respondents described their position as dependent, ‘out of control’ and a temporary earning opportunity. Devoid of clear mechanisms for controlling their work conditions or growth within the job, all respondents turned to a more instrumental approach, in which they invested in building up social capital through friendships, networks and personal relationships. Obtaining Hungarian citizenship and learning the language were two other main strategies for dealing with insecurity. Their efforts correspond with and reinforce a more globally integrated but ethnically motivated immigration regime, characteristic of post-socialist Hungary.

The Book of Job, The Book of Isaiah, tragic quality
Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 57 (2009), issue 1. Job’s drama that is equally a drama of existence and a drama of faith reveals the dimension that is in fact rarely seen in Greek tragedy, namely the transcendental tragic dimension. The identity tensions between the image of God whom Job accuses of cruelty and the image of the “defender in high” (go’el) mentioned by Job, one who would take the side of his suffering, at the same time testifying to the fact that Job was not guilty, opens the possibility of transformations blending the different images into a figure of transcendental tragic quality—based on a figure similar to the Greek figure of a tragic transfer—in which God, as the ultimate source of everything, including unjust misery, not only takes the side of human suffering but also experiences the suffering himself, revealing the analogy and then the interpretative identity of levels of human and divine experience of the tragic. The Book of Job is only the necessary starting point for the possible transformation of the image of God introducing a split of the image of God (the motif of go’el) in the book protagonist's complaint and deconstructing the category of “just retaliation.” The conditions that make transformation possible can be found in The Book of Isaiah, especially in the image of “The Lord’s Servant” and in Messianic interpretations of this picture closely connected with the phrase: “It was the Lord’s will to crush him with pain” (Is 53:10).

ObjectivesWork-related stress (WRS) is significantly associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL), but the amounts of evidence on differences of effort-reward imbalance (ERI) and job strain index (JSI) remain sparse and have limited generalizability. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association between ERI and JSI with HRQoL and assess the mediation effect of social support (JS) and over-commitment (OC) on this association in Taiwan’s civil servants.Material and MethodsA cross-sectional national survey was given to registered civil servants in Taiwan – 20 046 civil servants from 647 institutions were enrolled using multistage stratified random cluster sampling. A web-questionnaire collected demographic information, job characteristics, and different indexes of ERI and job-control-demand-support (JCDS) models. Structural equation model (SEM) was used to examine the association between ERI and JSI with HRQoL, and the mediation effect of JS and OC on the associations.ResultsIn the ERI model, ERI and OC were consistently negatively associated with the mental component score (MCS) (r = –0.46 and r = –0.37) and physical component score (PCS) (r = –0.45 and r = –0.34), which were higher than job demand (r = –0.28 and r = –0.22) and JSI (r = –0.38 and r = –0.29). Using hierarchical multiple regression analyses, ERI was significantly correlated with MCS and PCS, which was consistently higher than JSI. The ERI and JSI were significantly correlated with MCS (β = –0.170 and β = –0.140) and PCS (β = –0.150 and β = –0.082) using SEM analysis, whereas ERI was considerably higher than in JSI. In addition, OC and JS mediated the association between The ERI and JSI with HRQoL.ConclusionsWe found the ERI index is significantly correlated with HRQoL superior to JSI, in particular among Taiwan civil servants. Further longitudinal studies are needed to determine the causality and spatiotemporal relation of these differences.

Objectives To identify factors in favor of or against establishing and working in private practice, to determine the quality of life and work-related behavior and experience patterns of German physicians working in private practice, and to analyze the correlation of those factors. Material and Methods A representative sample of physicians in private practice in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, was surveyed according to a 2-year longitudinal design (T1 – 2008, N = 549 and T2 – 2010, N = 414). The study included 22 items regarding the attractiveness of establishing and working in private practice, and the questionnaires: the Short Form-12 Health Survey (SF-12), and Work-related Behavior and Experience Pattern (Arbeitsbezogenes Verhaltens- und Erlebensmuster – AVEM). Results Job satisfaction among those private practitioners decreased over time but their willingness to choose the profession once again remained unchanged. Patient care and the continuity of physician-patient relationship encouraged establishing and working in private practice; state regulation, financial risk, and administrative effort weighed against it. At both T1 and T2, physicians scored significantly lower for mental health than general population. About 20% of physicians showed a healthy behavior and experience pattern but 40% of them showed the pattern of reduced working motivation. About 20% of participants were at elevated risk for overexertion and for burnout. Physical and mental health as well as the total distribution of patterns did not change significantly during the 2-year observation period. Physicians at higher burnout risk rated tasks related to patient care considerably less positively than those with healthy pattern. Conclusions In order to improve job satisfaction and quality of life, and to make private practice more attractive, those German physicians require a) improved legislation, b) educational programs that promote the attractiveness of private practice, and c) highly accessible counseling services for the prevention and treatment of stress, overexertion, and burnout. Globally, there is increased customer mobility and competition within the higher education sector. As such, university management and administration practices should consider academic satisfaction, quality and loyalty as important factors to influence graduate job performance. The study was conducted to see if self-perceived job performance had a role in mediating the effect of academic satisfaction and perceived academic quality on academic loyalty. Data was collected from 714 respondents using a cross-sectional survey. The covariance-based structural equation modelling was used to test the hypotheses. According to the study results, self-perceived job performance partially mediates the eff ect of both academic satisfaction and academic quality on academic loyalty. The study fi ndings emphasise the importance of graduate quality and satisfaction in influencing loyalty. Thus, the higher education sector should take cognisance of self-perceived job performance as this also influences academic loyalty

Objectives This study measures the association between hospital staff’s job strain (JS), mental quality of life (MQL) and how they are influenced by the organization models within emergency and critical care units. Material and Methods This study describes workers employed in emergency departments and intensive care units of a French public hospital. A selfadministered questionnaire was used to survey the demographic and organizational characteristics of their work, as well as work-related mental stress, psychosocial and organizational constraints, and their MQL. Results Among 145 workers participating in the study, 59.3% of them report job strain and 54.5% of them have low MQL scores. The majority of staff with job strain has reported working more than 2 weekends per month, were regularly on-call, worked in dysfunctional environments and did not participate in regular meetings. The staff with low MQL worked more frequently in dysfunctional environments, had significant complaints regarding employer’s efforts to promote communications or provide adequate staffing levels than the workers with a high MQL score. Conclusions If stress reduction and improved MQL in emergency and intensive care units is to be achieved, hospital management needs to design work schedules that provide a better balance between working and non-working hours. Additionally, ergonomic design, functional environments and improved communications needs to be implemented.

Purpose – The aim of this article is to provide a comparative analysis of the results of research carried out in the Malopolskie and Pomorskie voivodeships in four areas: identification of key work attributes based on the ranking of their importance, assessment of satisfaction with the performance of work features being at the core of the analysis, exposure of the gaps between the expectations of employees and satisfaction with the performance of individual work features. Research method– The research was conducted using the survey method and purposive sampling technique. In both voivodeships the gender and age of the respondents’ was identical. The measuring instrument included four work dimensions which consisted of 18 partial features. Results – In both voivodeships, the most important work features were: the opportunity to accommodate work with personal life (i.e. work life balance), working relationships with co-workers, fairness of the superior followed by remuneration and communication at work. Statistically significant differences in the assessment of satisfaction with the performance of six features were shown. Originality / value – The results obtained constitute a strong basis for developing a scale to measure the perceived quality of work life, allowing for comparisons between regions, taking into account the cultural environment in Poland. The high value of KMO coefficients and the satisfactory internal consistency of the scale allowed for the testing of competitive confirmatory models.

Opis:
The ordinary life of Slovak Republic citizens is becoming more and more dependent on their ability to be successful on job market as an employee or businessperson, but also from the overall health condition of citizens, from the social political situation in country, but also from the civilization context which is given mainly by development of science and technology. Faster than in any other period, the lifestyle changes of citizens occur, the changes are done mainly in the individual life strategies, dramatically the life quality is changed. On the life quality has the biggest influence the affluence of financial means for individuals and household. With this, there is the connection of the need to have employment, work for higher wage than the minimal and from the played salary normally pay the insurance fees and taxes. With regard to high rate of unemployment in Slovakia approximately 5 per cent of citizens works for minimal wage. It also starts to be certainty that minimal wage is not only played for work with regards of difficulties and sufficient professional training and education but also for the work which belongs to the more demanding. When comparing the minimal wage with the average wage in national economy it is visible that minimal wage is not high as 40 per cent from the amount of average monthly wage which has negative impact on life quality of employed citizens of Slovakia. It is right if in the country the amount of minimal wage defined? Would not it be convenient to establish the minimal wage according the regions and optimized it to average wage? It is totally necessary from the reason that the amount of minimal wage is not enough for employed citizens in the full range to cover basic life needs. The average wages, minimal wages but also the costs of work in Slovakia are lower mainly when comparing to the other EU countries. According the recommendations of EU the minimal wages should be at least 60 per cent of average nominal monthly wage of economics. Low level of wages means not only the lowering of the quality of citizens life’s but also lowering of motivation to find a job, loosing of interest of getting higher qualification and leaving of young people with higher education abroad. The present day problem in the area of wages should getting along of market demands on the graduate students which has its part also by failing personal policy of employers.

Opis:
Objectives Work ability may be considered as an important aspect of well-being and health status. One of the most important factors in association with work ability is health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study has been to determine the association between work ability, individual characteristics and HRQoL of female workers. Material and Methods The design of this study has been cross-sectional. The work ability index (WAI) and Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-12) questionnaires were used to collect data. Three hundred and twenty female workers were selected from food supplier factories in Karaj. One-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation analysis, independent sample t-test and multiple linear regression methods were used to analyze data. Results Mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) of the WAI stood at 35.02 and 5.57, respectively. The categories of the WAI for women being as follows: 8.8% poor, 62% moderate, 25.4% good and 3.7% excellent. Mean±SD for the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of quality of life was 58.84±11.12 and 57.45±9.94, respectively. There was a positive significant association between the PCS and MCS with the WAI (p = 0.0001). Workers with higher education had a better work ability (p = 0.002) and shift-work workers had a worse work ability (p = 0.03). Conclusions Work ability of majority of women was moderate. Considering mean age of studied women (27.6 years old), this work ability is not satisfactory. Physical and mental components of the HRQoL were the important factors associated with work ability.
