W artykule omówiono msze święte za ojczyznę odprawiane przez ks. Jerzego Popiełuszkę w parafii pw. św. Stanisława Kostki na warszawskim Żoliborzu w latach 1982-1984 oraz ich znaczenie. Ksiądz Popiełuszko – duszpasterz i kapelan stołecznej „Solidarności”, dziś błogosławiony Kościoła Katolickiego. 31 sierpnia 1980 roku na prośbę kard. Stefana Wyszyńskiego odprawił po raz pierwszy mszę dla strajkujących pracowników w Hucie Warszawa. Tak rozpoczęła się jego współpraca z robotnikami i Solidarnością. Każdego miesiąca w tych mszach za ojczyznę udział brało kilkadziesiąt tysięcy osób, w tym robotnicy, profesorowie i studenci oraz delegacje zdelegalizowanej „Solidarności”.

Social problems are defined, inter alia, through social resonance arousing in society or being identified by charismatic individuals. In the 80s of the twentieth century, such an individual was Rev. Jerzy Popieluszko. His sermons arouse awareness of the existence of certain problems which should have been faced by the government. Some of those problems were related to families. They fall into three categories: violation of ethical principles, political and economic problems, and social problems. The text analyzes Jerzy Popieluszko’s speeches, emphasising the problems of families and being categorised by him as: breaking the axiological system. Those problems stemmed from the disrespect for human dignity, injustice, lack of freedom and hypocrisy.
Problemy społeczne są definiowane między innymi poprzez rezonans społeczny, jaki wzbudzają w społeczeństwie, lub też wskazanie ich przez charyzmatyczne jednostki. W latach 80. XX wieku taką jednostką był ks. Jerzy Popiełuszko. Jego kazania uświadamiały istnienie określonych problemów, z którymi winna zmierzyć się ówczesna władza. Część tych problemów dotyczyła rodzin. Można je podzielić na trzy kategorie: łamanie zasad etycznych, problemy polityczno-gospodarcze, problemy społeczne. W tekście dokonano analizy przemówień Jerzego Popiełuszki, wskazując problemy, które wyróżniał w kategorii: łamanie systemu aksjologicznego. Problemy te wynikały z nieposzanowania godności osoby ludzkiej, niesprawiedliwości, braku wolności i zakłamania.

One of the many topics that have found their place in the teaching of Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko was the truth about freedom and human dignity. Żoliborz preacher of his life, and in every sermon preached during the Mass. for the Homeland in the church Stanislaus Kostka in Warsaw's Żoliborz, courageously stood in defense of fundamental values that shape society and man. The issue of freedom he effected a distinction between freedom: inside and outside. Despite the many socio-political changes in Poland and Europe in many regions of the world. Especially when changes leading to democracy and economic liberalism, human freedom is sometimes treated lightly. Freedom „external and internal” so much at stake in times of ministry of Fr. Popieluszko, is again in danger of enslavement „interior” of man through various ideologies and trends. „Martyr of communism” very often emphasized that the freedom given to man is not itself a goal, but a means to an end, and this goal is good, namely, love. What regulates the correct procedure in freedom and using it, the Decalogue, and guided by the law of God's love. He expressed Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko in his preaching. Life Christian truth, he put a sensible use of the gift of freedom.

Each of the Masses for the homeland that blessed Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko celebrated in St. Stanisław Kostka Church in Warsaw in the years 1982-1984, was devoted to a given topic. The purpose of this article is to present the message of the patriotic service of August 28, 1983. This liturgy was celebrated a few days before the anniversary of the so-called of the August agreements in 1980 and the creation of NSZZ “Solidarność”. That is why this was the theme of the Mass for the Homeland, already contained in the introduction to the Eucharist by blessed Fr. Jerzy. In his sermon, the martyr of communism referred to contemporary events and presented successively the basic values of man and society: truth, freedom, justice and solidarity. It was in their implementation, in accordance with the Christian religion, that he saw the foundation for the proper development of humanity, the Nation and aspirations for real independence. These values during the enslavement of communist Poland after 1945 were denied by the authorities, especially during martial law. That is why the teaching of Fr. Popiełuszko was a cry for respect for fundamental rights, which he emphatically showed, also referring to implementation in everyday life. Complementing the message of the Holy Mass for the homeland there was artistic decoration in the temple’s presbytery, as well as artistic setting.

In the history of the Church one finds an event wherein a mother wasquestioned in the beatification process of her son. This occurred in the caseof Marianna Popiełuszko, who before the court of beatification in Warsawin 1997, responded to all the questions put to her in order to assess the lifeand work of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko as a candidate for sainthood by Churchauthorities.From these testimonies there emerges an interesting picture of the lifeand death of Fr. Popiełuszko, as well as his faith and steadfastness. It helpsto read the true intentions which were of a religious nature that guided himduring his activity. Moreover, this confirms the martyrological nature ofhis death, in which what counts is not only the anguish inflicted, but thereason for one’s achievements. This also demonstrates that martyrdom wasthe crowning achievement of his life of faith and love, which was associatedwith forgiveness that is opposed to hatred or vengeance.This vision of martyrdom is consistent with the classical understandingof martyrdom in the Church, which is not limited only to the moment ofdeath, but applies to the entire life of the martyr.

Martyr of communism – Bl. Rev. Jerzy Popiełuszko belongs to the group of national preachers who have made a special mention in the history of the Church in the Homeland and in the history of the Nation. Among the many subjects of his teaching there was also a catechesis on the love of the Fatherland. Analysis of the blessed sermons indicates that the patriotic theme was present in each of the Żoliborz homilies preached during the famous “Holy Mass. for my homeland”. Bl. Rev. Jerzy Popiełuszko devoted a great deal of space to the history of Poland (the January, November, Polish-Bolshevik war, World War II) to show the sources of crises, heroism and glory of the Nation, and above all to show the Christian roots of Poland. He quoted national bards, referred to important anniversaries, and recalled the profiles of national heroes (Saint Father Maksymilian M. Kolbe and Romuald Traugutt), showing their love of the Fatherland as a model for the faithful. In the realization of the values of the love of the Fatherland, the priest from Warsaw saw the way for the liberation and good of the Fatherland. In cultivating tradition and caring for national culture, he saw the path of love for the homeland. Blessed reminded that every man in the implementation of his daily duties and in the generational memory cares for the good and future of the Fatherland. He indicated that this value comes from the fourth commandment of the Decalogue.
