Opis:
In this paper, the highly peculiar masticatory apparatus of glyptodonts is studied. The general morphology of the skull is analysed using a morphometric procedure, the Resistant Fit Theta Rho Analysis, which allows comparison among different biological forms. Here, a large terminal form, the late Pleistocene genus Glyptodon, is compared with the smaller primitive Miocene genus Propalaehoplophorus, and with the generalised Recent armadillo Chaetophractus. The masticatory musculature of glyptodonts is reconstructed. Their tooth form and wear facets, as well as their mandibular symphysis and jaw joint, are analysed. A model of jaw movement is constructed based on these analyses. It is demonstrated that the masticatory apparatus of glyptodonts had undergone a telescoping process, which was already underway in the most ancient forms whose skull is known. This process created problems in regard to the way stresses produced by mastication were absorbed by the mandible, and therefore it might be regarded as non-adaptive. Some functional explanatory hypotheses are discussed, such as a requirement of keeping the moment of the weight of the cranium small enough to be counterbalanced by the neck muscles, or fitting the head into the armour.

Opis:
Ischnacanthiform acanthodian dentigerous jaw bones from the Lower Devonian (Late Lochkovian) of Podolia are described for the first time. One new genus and one new species are established. Podoliacanthus gen. nov. is diagnosed as having small−sized jaw bones, the presence of specific accessory cusps/denticles on the medial side of teeth of the lateral tooth row, and groups of denticles forming the lingual tooth row. Podoliacanthus zychisp. nov. is distinguished in having elongated slender jaw bones and lateral teeth with one medial side denticle. Besides, three species are described in open nomenclature: Podoliacanthus sp. 1, while similar to Podoliacanthus zychi sp. nov., differs in having stronger posterior inclination of the teeth tips and presence of well developed flanges of the teeth, P. sp. 2 has quite robust jaw bones and teeth with two medial side denticles, and Podoliacanthus sp. 3 has small narrow jaw bones and teeth with three medial side denticles. Morphology of the lingual tooth row is considered to be a diagnostic feature of generic and higher taxonomic levels, while accessory medial cusps/denticles of the teeth are regarded as diagnostic features at species level. The new genus also occurs in Upper Silurian or Lower Devonian deposits of North Greenland. Preservation of the jaw bones possibly depends on their secondary mineralization.

Opis:
Specimens of the microscopic teeth of the chondrichthyan genus Thrinacodus are described from Mississippian (Tournaisian) rocks of Ireland. They are from calcareous mudstones or crinoidal limestones whose palaeoenvironments are interpreted as ranging from near shore, shallow water through moderately shallow high energy carbonate shelf, to relatively deep off−shore. The richest fauna was recovered from the high−energy carbonate shelf, containing both asymmetrical and symmetrical teeth raising the possibility that they may have been derived from a single species of shark. The teeth are assigned to Thrinacodus incurvus (Newberry and Worthen, 1866), which is suggested to be a senior synonym of Thrinacodus ferox Turner, 1982. Presently the genus is known only from isolated teeth. The asymmetrical and symmetrical teeth are described as two morphotypes, ferox morphotype and nanus morphotype. Within the morphotypes, morphological variation occurs, especially within the ferox morphotype, allowing a number of possible reconstructions of the dentition of Thrinacodus incurvus to be presented as a basis for future debate.

The paper is concerned with strength analysis of multi-clip joints. Such structures enable visible growth of the carrying capacity and make them elements easily assembled by the clamping jaws and a single-clamp press. Each joint exerts an appreciable influence upon the safety level of the whole structure. A numerical analysis was performed to assess the effect of clearance between a sleeve and rope upon the joint quality. Phenomena emerging in the area between the clips were analysed as well. Some strength tests related to the process of drawing the wire rope out of the sleeve were also investigated. Changes in the stiffness of the clamping sleeve were analysed in view of the influence of the aforementioned factors upon the carrying capacity of joints and the sleeve material effort. Experimental investigations were conducted as well aiming at the determination of the smallest possible number of clips or the effective length of joints necessary for carrying the loads higher than the admissible load of the wire rope.
W pracy przeprowadzono analizę złącz wielozaciskowych. Umożliwiają one osiągnięcie większej nośności złącza poprzez zastosowanie szczęk zaciskających i prasy do zacisków jednokrotnych.

Partially preserved temnospondyl mandibles from the Late Permian–Early Triassic Buena Vista Formation of Uruguay are referred to the basal stereospondyl taxon Mastodonsauridae. These represent the earliest known members of this group for South America. In most cases, this assignment was based on the characteristic morphology of the postglenoid (= postarticular) area of the lower jaw together with the presence of a hamate process. Comparisons with basal mastodonsaurids indicate that the Uruguayan specimens are phenetically similar to Gondwanan and Laurasian Early Triassic taxa, such as Watsonisuchus, Wetlugasarus, and Parotosuchus. Nevertherless, they display some characters which have not previously been described in Mesozoic temnospondyls. The Permo−Triassic Uruguayan mastodonsaurids support a Gondwanan origin for the group, an event which probably occurred sometime during the latest Permian.

Introduction: Sarcomas are a rare group of malignant tumours. This study highlights important findings in 91 cases of nonodontogenic sarcomas of the orofacial region. Materials and Methods: Patients who presented with orofacial sarcoma at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of a regional University Teaching Hospital between January 1997 and June 2017 were retrospectively studied. Excluded were cases of Kaposi and odontogenic sarcomas. Data obtained were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results from descriptive statistics were represented in the form of charts. Results: A total of 91 cases were reviewed and consisted of 51 (56.0%) males and 40 (44.0%) females, with a male to female ratio of 1.3:1. The mandible (n = 47; 51.6%) and the maxilla (n = 26; 28.6%) were the major sites involved. Osteogenic sarcoma (n = 44; 48.4%) and rhabdomyosarcoma (n = 16; 17.6%) occurred more frequently. A total of 41 (45.1%) patients had surgery and the common hard tissue procedures were mandibulectomy (n = 26; 28.6%) and maxillectomy (n = 10; 11.0%). Discussion: Most recurrences were noted less than one year post treatment. There is a tendency for patients to present late and compliance with follow-up review is poor in this environment.

This paper presents experimental comparison of two machine crushing technologies: one-stage and two-stage. The study was carried on a model double-toggle jaw crusher which allows crushing forces, energy and toggle displacement to be measured. The main aim of the work was to determine the energy consumption of crushing process assuming a given level of fragmentation. Studies were performed on three rocks: granite “Strzegom”, limestone “Morawica” and sandstone “Mucharz”. The material tested had a cubic shape and average dimension of 90 mm. One-stage crushing was carried out for outlet slot er = 11 mm, and two-stage crushing for er = 24 mm and 11 mm. In the tests special design of variable profile moving jaw was used and fixed jaw was flat. The analysis of the results shows that taking into account energy consumption, it is better to use two-stage crushing process. For given materials energy consumption in the two-stage crushing process was reduced by 30%.

Opis:
The results of studies of the crushing process in a double toggle jaw crusher are presented. This process was carried out on six sets of crushing plates. The first three of them are used in industrial crushers – plates with a flat working surface and a triangular profile (in this work, under consideration were profiles with teeth angle γ = 90°). The fourth and fifth type refer to plates with a variable pitch t and teeth height with a triangular shape of the teeth. In the sixth solution, plates with variable pitch and width of the wedged teeth are proposed. The results of the basic process parameters are shown, that is, average degree of fineness n, technical performance Wt, crushing energy L and crushing force F, sieve analysis of crushing product. The obtained results are the basis for the assessment of the suitability of various types of plates, especially plates with a new profile, which have an altered shape in comparison with the plates used in crushers so far. The crushing tests were carried out with the same dimension of outlet slot er = 24 mm, close to the pitch size for plates with triangular profile. Tests were performed on the "Mucharz" sandstone. Samples from a series of blocks of different size and geometric shape were prepared. This work also presents feed mass influence on crushing process efficiency. The plates with variable pitch and width of teeth are beneficial because of lower crushing force and energy.

Silesaurus opolensis belongs to Silesauridae, the closest sister group to dinosaurs. The present study analyzed the dental microwear patterns of Silesaurus opolensis. Low pit-to-scratch ratios imply they did not feed on hard objects. Unimodal distributions of both wear-facet and non-facet scratch orientations indicate simple orthal jaw movement. Scratch orientation and density differ between microscopic regions in Silesaurus, and unlike hadrosaurid dinosaurs, the microwear patterns of small areas are not identical to those of whole teeth.

A new record of the chondrichthyan hybodontoid genus Lissodus is presented from two localities within the Mississippian (Tournaisian) rocks of Ireland. Five morphotypes of the genus are described within each of which occurs morphological variance. Specimens recovered and described herein are from crinoidal limestones whose palaeoenvironments are interpreted as ranging from a moderately shallow high−energy carbonate shelf, to relatively deep off−shore. The richest fauna recovered from the high−energy carbonate shelf, contains all five morphotypes raising the possibility that they may have been derived from a single species of shark. A discussion on the relationship between the five morphotypes and other Carboniferous Lissodus teeth is offered and it is argued that although the morphotypes differ slightly from other Carboniferous Lissodus teeth, they may belong to a closely related species not formally named until additional evidence is obtained. A mouth reconstruction using the teeth recovered from the Lower Carboniferous of Ireland is proposed.

In the paper fundamentals of biomechanics of the human masticatory system, its dysfunctions and instrumental diagnostic methods, are presented. Based on the analysis of methods commonly used in diagnostics of functional disorders of the masticatory system, a new conception for complex measurement of jaw movements is proposed, with simultaneous recording of accompanying acoustical and electromyographic (EMG) signals. For three-dimensional recording of the jaw movements, a video camera was used and light-emitting markers placed on the head of a patient. Several microphone transducers were tested for proper recording of the acoustical signal associated with jaw joint movements. Recording techniques for EMG signals are discussed. Results of examination of the jaw movement trajectory, as well as analysis of acoustical signals are presented
