Opis:: The wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis L.) is a very rare tree species in Poland, which also represents the north-eastern border of its natural range. The majority of this species’ stands is found in Wielkopolska. This study was aimed at examining the relationships between growth and climate for trees of the species Sorbus torminalis L. growing in the Wielkopolski National Park and the forest district Pniewy (Wielkopolska). Samples for the analysis were taken from 63 trees. However, taking into account the missing growth rings and difficult identification of the tree-ring borders in sapwood, only ca. 30% of the samples could be synchronized and dated accurately. Applying classic methods of dendrochronological dating, a 94-year STW chronology was constructed, spanning the years 1920–2013. The chronology, in turn, was used as a basis for dendroclimatological analyses including correlation, response function and pointer years. Climatic data used in the analyses came from the meteorological station in Poznań; providing air temperature and precipitation for a period of 66 years (1948–2013) and 48 years of insolation data (1966–2013). Insolation had the highest negative and precipitation the highest positive impact on the annual growth in May and June. Positive pointer years could be linked to humid months with low insolation during the growth season, while negative pointer years are characterized by deficient precipitation, a large number of sunny hours and high air temperatures in the summer months.

Opis:: Swedish whitebeam (Sorbus intermedia (Ehrh.) Pers.) is a species with a very limited range. It occurs only in southern Scandinavia and along the Baltic coast, without the Gulf of Finland. Its southernmost natural localities are situated in northern Poland. They are few in number, grouped in two regions: near Kołobrzeg and the Gulf of Gdańsk. Currently, only three of them survive: vicinity of Sarbinowo as well as Kępa Redłowska and Przylądek Rożewski. In the Podtatrze region, S. intermedia has long been planted along roads, on green areas, in gardens and parks, among others in Zakopane. In the Tatras it did not appear, so it is a foreign species for this region. Currently, in the Tatra National Park there are several hundred fruiting specimens of this species growing. Most of them are part of a forty−year−old stand planted on the back of the Grzybowiec ridge. The aim of this research was to recognise the health status of S. intermedia. Phytopathological research was conducted in 2018 in the Tatra National Park. Leaves that were subject to analysis were decontaminated in 1% surfactant solution of sodium hypochlorite. Their fragments of about 0.5 cm were placed on Petri plates with PDA (Potato Dextrose Agar). The growing fungal colonies were consequently re−planted onto PDA slants for further culturing and taxonomic identification. The pathogens were identified basing on morphological features and with molecular tools. All S. intermedia in the Tatra National Park showed disease symptoms. Infected S. intermedia leaves were colonized by A. alternata, which fraction amounted to over 40%. The following dominant was B. exigua with over 30% share. F. avenaceum (close to 10%) and E. nigrum and D. macrostoma were also found. The S. intermedia population growing in the Tatra National Park is characterized by a poor condition, which may in the future affect the population of this plant in the Tatra Mts.

Opis:: The aim of the research was to determine the impact of climatic conditions on the tree−ring width of Swedish whitebeam Sorbus intermedia (Ehrh.) Pers. growing in the urban conditions in Szczecin (NW Poland). The samples were taken from 26 trees growing along Rodziewiczówny, Ejsmonda and Santocka streets (left bank of the Odra river). On the basis of the tree−ring width measurements and cross−dating, two local chronologies (JS1 – Rodziewiczówny and Ejsmonda streets, and JS2 – Santocka street) were developed. Later on we indexed them (double detrending, least squares method and spline function) and subjected to the analysis of correlation and response functions. Growth−climate dependencies in both Swedish whitebeam communities are different. For the JS1 chronology the highest value of the multiple regression coefficient was obtained for air temperature, while for JS2 chronology for insolation and precipitation. For both sequences dependency on climate is similar in August and December of the previous year of vegetation and in January, February, April, June and July of the current year. The observed differences are the result of the impact of various factors related to human activity: traffic volume, soil pollution (mainly heavy metals and salt), damage to roots, trunks and crowns.

Opis:: The objective of this work was to evaluate the occurrence of two strictly protected vascular plant species in managed stands of submontane acidophilous oak forests (Luzulo luzuloidis – Quercetum petraeae Hilitzer 1932 association) in the Sudeten foothills (Lower Silesia, Poland). During the study, the most important stand parameters influencing the occurrence of the wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz) and the orchid sword-leaved helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia (L.) Fritsch) were ascertained. The stands ranged from 50 to 130 years of age and were dominated by sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.), which comprised 5–100% of trees. Both of the protected plant species were observed in 10% of the examined plots with the most favorable type of forest stand for sword-leaved helleborine as well as the wild service tree being clearly dominated by sessile oak (portion of oak above 80%). The analysis showed that the wild service tree was found in pure oak stands, whereas sword-leaved helleborine was also recorded in mixed stands aged 50–80 years. The increased frequency of sword-leaved helleborine was associated with a higher portion of oak in the tree layer. The results suggest that the modern silviculture practices, “close-to-nature” silviculture, transform pure oak forest into mixed forest and allow for natural expansion of hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) as well as beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), which can induce the gradual disappearance of the orchid and the wild service tree in submontane acidophilous oak forests. Restoring semi-natural pure oak stands should play a significant role in supporting both protected species in submontane acidophilous oak forests of the Sudeten Region.

Opis:: Phytophthora cactorum was isolated from about half of the rowan seedlings taken from 2 nurseries. Additionally, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium solani were found in diseased tissues. In laboratory trials, the pathogen colonized plants of the family Rosaceae, and most especially Prunus avium, Pyrus communis and Rosa canina, as well as Alnus glutinosa, Betula verrucosa and coniferous plants. In a greenhouse trial, isolates from rowan and rhododendron were found to cause necrosis of the stem base, with a rate of disease spread of about 1.3 mm/24 h.

Opis:: Phytophthora cactorum and P. citrophthora were isolated from diseased plants of Sorbus aucuparia. P. cactorum was the dominant species on seedlings and 3−15 years old trees, while P. citrophthora was isolated only from 3−6 years old trees. Isolates of both species obtained from 10 host plants colonized stem fragments and leaf blades of S. aucuparia and S. intermedia. In greenhouse trials only isolates from Pinus sylvestris and Viola wittockiana did not cause root and stem base rot symptoms of rowan seedlings.

Opis:: Complete discontinuation of agricultural use of subalpine meadows in the Western Bieszczady, which dates back to 1940s, started the process of their overgrowing with brushwood. Based on available cartographic material the following features were analysed: changes in the area occupied by brushwood on Mała Rawka and Wielka Rawka subalpine meadows, their growth rate and the relationship between the overgrowth process and the previous manner of agricultural use as well as topographic conditions throughout last 30 years. In that period the brushwood on Mała Rawka meadow (in the past the area had been reaped) was characterised by a small initial area (in the 1980s), a significant growth rate of the area and its relation to the slopes exposed to N, NE and E, the zone adjacent to the timber line and steeper slopes. In 1980 on Wielka Rawka meadow (previously used as a pasture) a high share of brushwood was found (about 25% of the meadow area), whose distribution was related only to the slopes of N, NE and E exposure. In subsequent years the growth rate was low. The results indicate a progressing process of overgrowing of subalpine meadows by brushwood. The brushwood expansion is related to discontinuation of agricultural use of the meadows and its course depends on the earlier regime of cultivation. The pattern of brushwood distribution also depends on altitude, exposure and the grade of slopes. Those relations result from the expansion of the rowan tree, dominating in the brushwood, also climatic conditions and accessibility of the ground.
