Pathological lesions within the scrotum are relatively rare in imaging except for ultrasonography. The diseases presented in the paper are usually found in men at the age of 15–45, i.e. men of reproductive age, and therefore they are worth attention. Scrotal ultrasound in infertile individuals should be conducted on a routine basis owing to the fact that pathological scrotal lesions are frequently detected in this population. Malignant testicular cancers are the most common neoplasms in men at the age of 20–40. Ultrasound imaging is the method of choice characterized by the sensitivity of nearly 100% in the differentiation between intratesticular and extratesticular lesions. In the case of doubtful lesions that are not classified for intra-operative verifi cation, nuclear magnetic resonance is applied. Computed tomography, however, is performed to monitor the progression of a neoplastic disease, in pelvic trauma with scrotal injury as well as in rare cases of scrotal hernias involving the ureters or a fragment of the urinary bladder.
Patologiczne zmiany w obrębie worka mosznowego są stosunkowo rzadko spotykane w badaniach obrazowych, z wyjątkiem ultrasonografii. Prezentowane choroby dotyczą najczęściej grupy mężczyzn w przedziale wiekowym 15–45 lat, czyli w wieku rozrodczym, dlatego zasługują na szczególną uwagę. U niepłodnych mężczyzn badanie ultrasonograficzne moszny powinno być wykonywane rutynowo, ponieważ w tej populacji częstość wykrywania zmian patologicznych w mosznie jest bardzo wysoka. Nowotwory złośliwe jąder należą do najczęstszych nowotworów występujących u mężczyzn w wieku 20–40 lat. Metodą diagnostyczną z wyboru jest badanie ultrasonograficzne, którego czułość w różnicowaniu zmian wewnątrzjądrowych i zewnątrzjądrowych wynosi prawie 100%. W diagnostyce niejednoznacznych zmian, niekwalifikujących się do weryfikacji operacyjnej, stosowany jest magnetyczny rezonans jądrowy. Tomografię komputerową natomiast wykorzystuje się w monitorowaniu zaawansowania choroby nowotworowej, w stanach pourazowych miednicy z udziałem urazu moszny oraz w rzadkich przypadkach przepuklin mosznowych zawierających moczowody lub fragment pęcherza moczowego.

The paper presents an unsupervised approach to biomedical signal segmentation. The proposed segmentation process consists of several stages. In the first step, a state-space of the signal is reconstructed. In the next step, the dimension of the reconstructed state-space is reduced by projection into principal axes. The final step involves fuzzy clustering method. The clustering process is applied in the kernel-feature space. In the experimental part, the fetal heart rate (FHR) signal is used. The FHR baseline and the acceleration or deceleration patterns are the main signal nonstationarities but also the most clinically important signal features determined and interpreted in computer-aided analysis.

Opis:
The aim of this study is the processing and evaluating of plethysmographical records giving important information about the blood vessel function. Result of this study is to present the methodology for classifying the records by means of mathematical methods that would contribute to systematic evaluation of what has been found by finger plethysmography. Thereafter the experimental expert system based on framework systems serves to determine the diagnosis on the basis of previous mathematical processing is introduced. The goal of the project was also creation of application by the form of the extension of kernel for the use of framework that is determined for support of control and information systems development in the area of signal processing, elaborate and describe the methodology of extension hereof setting in the nature of specific applications. Beyond above-mentioned outputs the solution of the project should give the specific knowledge about the usage effectiveness of evolutional frameworks. Fundamental implementation idea is based on the usage of MATLAB as the basis for extension of common kernel.

1. Introduction For centuries, nicks in the languid of the labial metal could be found in organ pipes throughout the world. It is one of the techniques of pipe voicing adjustment (an overview of voicing techniques see e.g. in: [www1]; [Otčenášek Z., Dlask P., Syrový V., Hruška V., Otčenášek J., 2018]). The use of nicks differs between countries, districts, organ builder schools, and also between different cultural times. In Czech historical lands, the principal pipes in baroque period were built mostly without nicking (together with the used of low air pressures in windchest). If nicks were used than they were typically slim, low deep, and sparse (from 3 to 7 at languid width). Later, in romantic time, when some baroque organs were romanticized, nicks were doubled (up to tripled) and enlarged (being deeper, broader and wedged). Nowadays, Czech historical organs can be found with original baroque pipes without any modification (original state), with the addition of unoriginal romantic nicking later added to original pipes as well as pipes presenting both types of nicks concurrently. Less often we can find an organ with the pipes where the large number of deep broad notches were made at the edge of the languid resembling the teeth on a saw. In such cases the material of the languid was partly excised, and partly pressed and displaced below both the bottom edge and over the side walls of the saw teeth. In the last decades, when historical organs have had to be restored to original stage, also restoration of original sound was required; the elimination of the unoriginal nicks influence on the sound is necessary. Since the saw notches introduce heavy damage to the languid material, their elimination is an ongoing problem yet to be solved. Nowadays, the restoration of such organ with the saw notches can be 1) kept the pipes unchanged (what gives unsatisfactory, not eliminated influence on sound) or 2) cleared away with the common technology of smoothing (proper for thin nicks (Otčenášek Z., Koukal P., Švejda M. Moravec O., Dlask P., 2014); at saw notches, however not possible to get back the excised material and to correctly move back the displaced material; consequently the languid edge stay with the ripples). The present study verified a third possibility in which a new method of replacing the damaged languid by new ones is done. Since the cutting of the languid and soldering of a replica is considered an invasive intervention, the method was experimentally verified on the copies of historical pipes with identical modifications made (the original pipe being untouched). A replica model of the historical principal metal pipe (SupOctava 2, tone d1 [Dlask P., Otčenášek Z., Kopeček Š., Vorlíček M., Koukal P., Otčenášek J., Frič M., Hruška V., 2018]) from the Jesuit church in Klatovy (Czech Republic) was used (original can be seen in top of figure Obr. 1, replicas underneath). All copies were voiced at optimal sound for the air pressure in windchest of 55 mm H2O (539 Pa). The copies had very similar sound (see spectra in figures Obr. 4). Similar results were obtained also after each modification of the pipes; therefore, only results from measurement of only one replica pipe are presented here. 2. Method Acoustical measurements were performed in anechoic room (see figure Obr. 2). The recordings (wav format) were made with 24 bit A/D conversion, sampling frequency 48 kHz. The signal of tone attack was synchronized with the opening voltage of electromagnet of air valve (0 s). The FFT of spectrograms (see figures from Obr. 13 to Obr. 16) were computed with 42,66 ms hanning time window and 2,13 ms shift. The spectra (see figures Obr. 4, Obr. 11 and Obr. 12) are the average of 60x FFT with hanning time windows 682,66 ms and 13,66 ms shift. 3. Experiment The sound recordings, the spectra analysis, and listening tests with recorded sounds were done after each step of pipe modifications. 3.1. The documentation of default manufactured pipes without nicks was the first initial step (see figures Obr. 1, Obr. 3, spectra are in Obr. 4, and spectrogram of pipe K3 in Obr. 13). The frequency of 1st harmonic fo, pipe body length, cut-up height, cut-up with, slit breadth, foot length, foot opening diameter of measured pipes are in Tab. 1 (from left to right). The pipe K4 was used as a reference (without other alterations; the K4 spectra measured in the time after each step of other pipes show the temperature and humidity influence on results and repeatability of the method used, see figure Obr. 11). 3.2. In the second step the deep breadth saw notches were created (see figure Obr. 5). The notches where not accurately the same at all pipes (figure Obr. 6) but in spectra of all pipes we observed great lowering of both high harmonics (see difference between the red and green curves in figures Obr. 12) and noises (see sound pressure levels in figure Obr. 14). 3.3. In the third step the saw notches were cleared away by the common technology of smoothing. The material overhanging the languid edge from the bottom was pushed up from bellow by the metallic rod (see figure Obr. 7 left) through pipe foot. The saw teeth were aligned by other metallic tool by pushing both the material displaced from bottom and the tips of the saw tops back inside the teeth (see figure Obr. 7 right). After this step none of the pipe languid edges was straight (see languids after smoothing in figure Obr. 8 top; and languid detail viewed from the bottom after smoothed languids were cut out in next step see in figure Obr. 8 bottom). 3.4. The last step was the replacement of the languid by a new one. The authors were not experienced with this procedure. Firstly, all labial diameters were documented. Then a cut was made with a thin saw (cut width cca 0,2 mm) at the foot close to the languid (cca 0,5 mm) (see figure Obr. 9 left). The next cut was made in the upper edging of the languid (see languid in figure Obr. 10 top). Then the potential defects at foot, labium and pipe body were cleared and an accurate copy of languid was made (without nicks and notches). The languid replica was soldered at the foot and body (see figure Obr. 10 bottom). The cutting-up process of replacing the languid slightly changes the length of pipe and fo frequency (new values see in Tab. 2 in comparison with Tab. 1). 4. Acoustical results and assessment The results of the acoustical analysis demonstrate that the creation of deep breadth saw notches at pipe languid produced major changes in the pipe’s sound and tone attack. Changes were observed in the spectra of the established tone, the sound pressure waveforms and spectrograms of the starting part of the tone (figures Obr. 12 and Obr. 14). If the lowering of higher harmonics (green in figure Obr. 12) is not compensated by increasing the air pressure in the windchest (it was compensated in the case of organ romanticized modifications), a degradation of the organ sound can be noticed. The common smoothing method gives increasing of harmonic amplitudes at maximum 1/3 of their original values and therefore is not proper for the elimination of saw notches influence on pipe sound. When the sound of a historical organ needs to be restored, the windchest air pressure will be decreased when compared to the original baroque value and therefore it must be accompanied by the removal of the unoriginal saw notches. The results verify that, if the languid replica and soldering is done properly, and the languid cutting-up is replaced with a copy without notches, the original sound can be replicated. The sound before and after the substitution of the languid is not distinguishable when listen, and the spectra and spectrograms are similar (compare red and black curves in figures Obr. 12 or figures Obr. 13 and Obr. 16). 5. Conclusion The authors are aware that the experiments were performed on new pipes in which the material was not corroded, and without damage what occasionally occur in historical organs. Therefore, the new languid cutting-up and replacing method of saw notches elimination can not be directly used on historical pipes. Additional experiments have to be carrying out in order to ascertain such possibility.

Wstęp i cel: Zwiększenie kontrastu między jądrem komórkowym a cytoplazmą zapewnia poprawę wizualizacji cytologicznych cech komórki. Celem pracy jest poprawa wizualizacji jądra komórkowego. Materiał i metody: Automatyzacja doboru progu z wykorzystaniem algorytmu adaptacyjnego progowania dla rozkładów dwumodalnych została przeprowadzona dla obrazów rozmazów cytologicznych. Wyniki: Uzyskano zwiększony kontrast dla jądra komórkowego, dzięki czemu osiągnięto poprawę wizualizacji struktury chromatyny. Wniosek: Adaptacyjna metoda poprawy kontrastu może być użyteczna w diagnostyce cytologicznej, ale potrzebna jest weryfikacja w oparciu o większą bazę danych obrazów cytologicznych.
Introduction and aim: Contrast enhancement between nucleus and cytoplasm ensures improvement of cytological features visualisation. The aim of study is improvement of nucleus visualisation. Material and methods: Automation of threshold estimation with the use of adaptive tresholding algorithm for bimodal distributions was provided for images of cytological smears. Results: Improved contrast for cell nuclei was obtained and therefore the enhancement of chromatine structure visualisation is achieved. Conclusion: Adaptive method of contrast enhancement could be useful in cytological diagnosis, but requires verification with the use of large database of cytological images.

Along with the growing public awareness of health problems caused by smoking tobacco, smoking is becoming less popular in many parts of the world. The decline in the number of people smoking cigarettes is also observed in Poland. Men are still the majority of addicted people. Both active and passive smoking can lead to cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and lung and laryngeal cancers. Recent studies show that the compounds contained in cigarette smoke can induce dysfunction of endocrine system and disrupt the process of spermatogenesis in smokers.

Background: Testicle cancer constitutes 1.6% of malignant neoplasms in men. It is the most common tumor in men aging 20–44 years. It is worrying that the analysis of epidemiological data from the last three decades indicates a threefold increase in the incidence of this cancer. Regular testicular self-examination is an effective and cheap way to diagnose cancer. Aim of the study: Evaluation of declared rate of testicular self-exam in adult working men in the context of selected socio-demographic factors. Material and methods: The evaluation was conducted between June, 2014 and March 2015 on 224 working men. Diagnostic survey was used as a research method. The questionnaire used as the research tool was elaborated by the authors. The evaluated men were asked to estimate how often they examine their testicles. In the following questions included in the survey, they were asked about socio-demographic details and family history of cancer. The participation in the study was anonymous and voluntary. Results: As declared, testicular self-exam is performed once a month only by 17.41% of surveyed men, 28.13% of men perform the exam once in a few months, and 54.46% do not do it at all. Socio-demographic factors that significantly influenced the frequency of testicular self-exam included: education of the father, and family history of cancer (father or siblings) (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Regular testicular self-examination is performed by a small percentage of adult men. There is a need to inform young healthy men about the prevention of testicular cancer, within the field of health promotion.
Wstęp: Nowotwór złośliwy jądra stanowi 1,6% zachorowań na nowotwory złośliwe u mężczyzn, a wśród osób w wieku 20–44 lata jest najczęściej występującym nowotworem. Niepokojącym jest fakt, że analiza danych epidemiologicznych z trzech ostatnich dekad wskazuje na trzykrotne zwiększenie zachorowalności na ten nowotwór. Skutecznym i tanim sposobem rozpoznania raka jądra jest regularne samobadanie jąder. Cel pracy: Poznanie deklarowanej częstości samobadania jąder w grupie dorosłych mężczyzn pracujących, w zależności od wybranych cech socjodemograficznych. Materiał i metody: Badania właściwe zostały przeprowadzane od czerwca 2014 do marca 2015 roku wśród 224 pracujących mężczyzn. Metodą badawczą był sondaż diagnostyczny, a narzędziem badawczym – kwestionariusz ankiety własnego autorstwa. Badanych poproszono o zaznaczenie, z jaką częstością wykonują samobadanie jąder. W kolejnych pytaniach kwestionariusza oceniano cechy socjodemograficzne oraz rodzinne występowanie nowotworów. Udział w badaniu był anonimowy i dobrowolny. Wyniki: Samobadanie jąder raz w miesiącu deklaruje tylko 17,41% ankietowanych mężczyzn, 28,13% wykonuje je raz na kilka miesięcy, a 54,46% – wcale. Czynnikami socjodemograficznymi istotnie wpływającymi na częstość wykonywania samobadania jąder były: wykształcenie ojca oraz występowanie choroby nowotworowej u ojca lub rodzeństwa (p < 0,05). Wnioski: Regularne wykonywanie samobadania jąder zgłasza niewielki odsetek dorosłych mężczyzn. Istnieje potrzeba szerszego upowszechniania wiedzy na temat profilaktyki nowotworu jądra wśród zdrowych mężczyzn w obszarze działań promocji zdrowia.

Opis:
A modified version of the classical kernel nonparametric identification algorithm for nonlinearity recovering in a Hammerstein system under the existence of random noise is proposed. The assumptions imposed on the unknown characteristic are weak. The generalized kernel method proposed in the paper provides more accurate results in comparison with the classical kernel nonparametric estimate, regardless of the number of measurements. The convergence in probability of the proposed estimate to the unknown characteristic is proved and the question of the convergence rate is discussed. Illustrative simulation examples are included.

Wstęp: Nowotwory złośliwe jądra to nowotwory układu moczowo–płciowego mężczyzn, które stanowią około 1,5% zachorowalności. Dotyczą one szczególnie grupy mężczyzn w młodym wieku.Cel pracy: Celem pracy było wskazanie poziomu wiedzy młodych mężczyzn na temat raka jąder.Materiał i metody: Wyniki badań zebrano za pomocą autorskiego kwestionariusza ankiety oraz Wielowymiarowej Skali Umiejscowienia Kontroli Zdrowia (MHCL – adaptacja: Z. Juszczyński) metodą sondażu diagnostycznego. W badaniu wzięło udział 200 mężczyzn w wieku 18–35 lat.Wyniki: Według przeprowadzonych badań, znikoma ilość mężczyzn zdeklarowała znajomość techniki samobadania jąder oraz wiedzę na temat grupy wiekowej najczęstszego występowania raka jąder.Wniosek: Poziom wiedzy młodych mężczyzn jest niezadawalający, niezależnie od wieku, wykształcenia i statusu zawodowego.

Testicular cancer is common among young men.Aim of the paper: Aim of the paper was to present the young men’s knowledge about testicular cancer.Material and methods: The results were taken by the author’s questionnaire and by MHLC through the diagnostic survey. 200 men, aged 18 – 35, took part in the survey.Results: Results indicate that only few men declared that they know a) how to self-examin themselves in terms of the testicular cancer; b) the age of the most common testicular cancer’s occurrence.Conclusions: The level of knowledge among young men is disappointing, irrespectively of age, education, and social status.

W artykule badano wrażliwość metody pryzm trójkątnych (TPM - Triangular Prism Method) do estymacji wymiaru fraktalnego dla różnych rozmiarów jądra komórkowego w cytologii ginekologicznej wybarwionej metodą Papanicolaou. Zmiana obszaru analizy pozwala na zmniejszenie wpływu algorytmu segmentacji na wynik. Wykorzystanie kanału zielonego gęstości optycznej i zmian wymiaru fraktalnego dla par skal: 1-2 oraz 2-3 pozwala na otrzymanie wyników dla systemu klasyfikacji z małą wrażliwością na segmentację.
In the paper the influence of segmentation algorithms on estimation for the fractal dimension is analyzed. The Papanicolaou smears are very complex images and their automatic analysis is very hard. Segmentation algorithms of cell nuclei should support blurred and noised edges between cytoplasm and cell nucleus. The estimation of the cell nuclei image parameters is necessary, but the edge related parameters are not sufficient. The classification of the cells (correct/atypical) needs surface related parameters. Fractal based estimators are important for classification. The Papanicolaou images are colourful but only the green channel is important [9]. The TPM (Triangular Prism Method) is applied to the square area (2N+1 edge size) [5]. Multiple box selection variants occur and the multiple TPM analysis is applied and the mean value is calculated. The fractal dimension is calculated for a pair of scales (1-2, 2-3, 3-4). The correct and atypical cell nuclei are known and the analysis is separated. The histograms of difference between the known and reduced cell area are shown (Figs. 6-11). The atypical cells are less sensitive due to a larger size of the analysis area in comparison to the correct ones. Two scales (1-2) and (2-3) are useful, especially for smaller reduction parameter (erosion up to 9 pixels of original cell nuclei). Both scales are used in the classification system [9]. The fractal dimension changes are less than +/- 1%.

Increasing human activity significantly influences the geographic environment. The effects of excessive anthropogenic pressure are manifested by changes in land cover and in landscape structure, and land cover changes can particularly well observed in river valleys. In this study we aimed to determine the transformations of land use in 13.9 sq km of the Silesian Voivodeship in southern Poland, including parts of the city of Ruda Slaska and Mikolow County by analyzing changes in land cover that occurred from 1827-2012 and archival and contemporary topographic maps, and aerial photos were used as primary source materials. All materials were prepared with the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), using spatial analyses, such as kernel density and point density in order to define land cover structure changes. Results show the development of residential areas and the fragmentation of large structures that have occurred over the time period.

Since wind power generation has strong randomness and is difficult to predict, a class of combined prediction methods based on empirical wavelet transform (EWT) and soft margin multiple kernel learning (SMMKL) is proposed in this paper. As a new approach to build adaptive wavelets, the main idea is to extract the different modes of signals by designing an appropriate wavelet filter bank. The SMMKL method effectively avoids the disadvantage of the hard margin MKL method of selecting only a few base kernels and discarding other useful basis kernels when solving for the objective function. Firstly, the EWT method is used to decompose the time series data. Secondly, different SMMKL forecasting models are constructed for the sub-sequences formed by each mode component signal. The training processes of the forecasting model are respectively implemented by two different methods, i.e., the hinge loss soft margin MKL and the square hinge loss soft margin MKL. Simultaneously, the ultimate forecasting results can be obtained by the superposition of the corresponding forecasting model. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, it was applied to an actual wind speed data set from National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for short-term wind power single-step or multi-step time series indirectly forecasting. Compared with a radial basic function (RBF) kernel- based support vector machine (SVM), using SimpleMKL under the same condition, the experimental results show that the proposed EWT-SMMKL methods based on two different algorithms have higher forecasting accuracy, and the combined models show effectiveness.

One of the most popular methods in the diagnosis of breast cancer is fine-needle biopsy without aspiration. Cell nuclei are the most important elements of cancer diagnostics based on cytological images. Therefore, the first step of successful classification of cytological images is effective automatic segmentation of cell nuclei. The aims of our study include (a) development of segmentation methods of cell nuclei based on deep learning techniques, (b) extraction of some morphometric, colorimetric and textural features of individual segmented nuclei, (c) based on the extracted features, construction of effective classifiers for detecting malignant or benign cases. The segmentation methods used in this paper are based on (a) fully convolutional neural networks and (b) the marker-controlled watershed algorithm. For the classification task, seven various classification methods are used. Cell nuclei segmentation achieves 90% accuracy for benign and 86% for malignant nuclei according to the F-score. The maximum accuracy of the classification reached 80.2% to 92.4%, depending on the type (malignant or benign) of cell nuclei. The classification of tumors based on cytological images is an extremely challenging task. However, the obtained results are promising, and it is possible to state that automatic diagnostic methods are competitive to manual ones.

Modern cancer diagnostics is based heavily on cytological examinations. Unfortunately, visual inspection of cytological preparations under the microscope is a tedious and time-consuming process. Moreover, intra- and inter-observer variations in cytological diagnosis are substantial. Cytological diagnostics can be facilitated and objectified by using automatic image analysis and machine learning methods. Computerized systems usually preprocess cytological images, segment and detect nuclei, extract and select features, and finally classify the sample. In spite of the fact that a lot of different computerized methods and systems have already been proposed for cytology, they are still not routinely used because there is a need for improvement in their accuracy. This contribution focuses on computerized breast cancer classification. The task at hand is to classify cellular samples coming from fine-needle biopsy as either benign or malignant. For this purpose, we compare 5 methods of nuclei segmentation and detection, 4 methods of feature selection and 4 methods of classification. Nuclei detection and segmentation methods are compared with respect to recall and the F1 score based on the Jaccard index. Feature selection and classification methods are compared with respect to classification accuracy. Nevertheless, the main contribution of our study is to determine which features of nuclei indicate reliably the type of cancer. We also check whether the quality of nuclei segmentation/detection significantly affects the accuracy of cancer classification. It is verified using the test set that the average accuracy of cancer classification is around 76%. Spearman’s correlation and chi-square test allow us to determine significantly better features than the feature forward selection method.
