    Despite the title reference, the BBC’s Ripper Street (2012‒2014) was not intended as another Jack the Ripper story; the infamous killer’s absence is acutely felt in its first three seasons, though. The paper examines the way his acts are being recalled for the characters and viewers, but also reconstructed in a performance and copycat murders, and how, even though the Ripper is long gone, people may become his victims. The absence as echoed in the series plot and setting is a commentary on both the Victorian and modern fascination with the unsolved case.

    Opis:
    The main aim of this paper is to answer the question which appears in its title. In order to do so, I analyse the mind style of the eponymous character from Boris Akunin’s book The Decorator (1999). The notion of mind style coined by Roger Fowler relates to a unique correlation between certain linguistic constructions (metaphors, transitive patterns, underlexicalization) and their role in projecting particular world-views. The analysis shows that in the case of Akunin’s hero, who is inspired by the legendary Jack the Ripper, it is metaphors that serve the function of “consistent structural options”. They demonstrate how the murderer conceptualizes and interprets such concepts as MURDER, MURDERER, BODY and BEAUTY.

    Powiązania pomiędzy sztuką a aberracjami o charakterze psychologicznym od dawna fascynują zarówno psychologów, jak i teoretyków sztuki, a obecnie stały się nośnym tematem literackim. Przykładem tego zjawiska jest powieść Michaela White’a Sztuka morderstwa, w której pojawiają się motywy związane z uwikłaniem sztuki w zbrodnię. Stereotypowe przeświadczenie o korelacji między aktem twórczym a cierpieniem powiązane zostaje z reinterpretacją postaci seryjnego mordercy, w tym wypadku słynnego Kuby Rozpruwacza. Powieść White’a stanowi egzemplifikację próby wyjaśnienia bodźców twórczych jako tajemniczych i destrukcyjnych, wpisując się w modę, która nastała po ukazaniu się powieści Dana Browna Kod Leonarda da Vinci.
    Connections between art and various forms of sychopathy have long fascinated psychologists as well as art critics and have recently become a potent literary theme, as exemplified in Michael White’s novel The Art of Murder, featuring the motif of an artist involved in murder. The article demonstrates how the stereotypical conviction about the correlation between artistic creation and suffering is reinterpreted in the novel via the figure of serial killer, in this case Jack the Ripper. It is argued that White’s novel exemplifies a trend of describing a creative act as mysterious and destructive alike, which developed in the wake of the publication of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.

    Opis:
    Despite 128 years, the case of Jack the Ripper’s murders is still fascinating and tempting new generations of investigators willing to solve its mystery. However, from practical point of view it seems to be more important not to find a real Ripper, but rather take a glimpse into what the investigation looked like and where the mistakes were made. A brief review of the investigation leads to a conclusion that many of the mistakes made over 100 years ago still appear when it comes to an investigative process, such as improper selection of evidence at the crime scene or taking political tendencies under consideration rather than searching for the truth. The case shows that a man is the most important part of the investigation, and modern technology can only suport it, but it will never replace a human intellect and its ability to think in a logic way.
    Sprawa Kuby Rozpruwacza po dziś dzień nie przestaje fascynować, zaś próby jej rozwiązania podejmują się nowe pokolenia śledczych. Jednakże o wiele bardziej istotne z punktu widzenia współczesnej pracy wykrywczej wydaje się zbadanie sposobu prowadzenia śledztwa pod kątem błędów popełnionych w czasie jego trwania. Okazuje się bowiem, że bardzo wiele niepoprawnych zachowań, jakich dopuszczono się w czasie badania przypadku morderstw w Whitechapel, jak nieprawidłowe zabezpieczenie miejsca zdarzenia czy mieszanie politycznych interesów z dociekaniem prawdy, zdarza się także 128 lat po omawianym przypadku. Powyższe jednoznacznie podkreśla, iż w pracy śledczej najważniejszym ogniwem jest człowiek i jego praca, zaś nowoczesne technologie nie są celem, a jedynie środkiem w dążeniu do prawdy.

    The paper discusses one of the latest revisions of Doctor Jekyll’s dark side, Mr Hyde, as depicted in a graphic novel by Cole Haddon and M.S. Corley The Strange Case of Mr. Hyde. The text is a sequel to Stevenson’s novella and sets his character in 1888 during Jack the Ripper’s autumn of terror. What makes it stand out among other adaptations and appropriations is the combination of a Victorian and a modern villain – Edward Hyde and Hannibal Lecter, as well as giving voice to a Victorian police detective – a character that was ignored by the majority of nineteenth-century writers.
