    The goal of the paper is presentation of very wide range of defi nitions (singular words and word combinations) which may be recognized as qualifi ers in the fi rst Slavic dictionary of synonyms. The author described different structures which are the following types of qualifi ers: chronological, attendance, normative, stylistic, expressive, specialist and etymological.

    The paper presents a theory of the synonymia (at the preface and by selection and characteristics of the material) in the first Slavic dictionary of synonyms. According to the Krasiński – a forerunner of researches regarding the synonymia in Polish linguistics – words related to the same referent are always (more or less) different: in terms of additional meaning, shade, expression (e.g. emotions).

    Opis:
    The article presents the analysis of lexical calling Catholics and non-Catholics in the eighteenth-century sermons by priest Christopher Kluk – priest/scientist, parson of the parish in Ciechanowiec, KEN coworker. The vocabulary of the homilies is divided into four linguistic fields: members of my religious community, Christian-non-Catholics, non-Christians, atheists. This studies has shown a clear domination of the Roman Catholic beliefs and tendencies of everyday understanding of the religion, where there is an equal sign between the Catholic and Christian. It was also found that the linguistic field hChristian-non-Catholicsi in Kluk’s homilies is much smaller than the same linguistic fields in the seventeenth-century preachers homilies. It may shows that in the eighteenth century, the echoes of the Reformation has not proved such a great emotion, even among ordinary priests.

    Opis:
    The article presents the part of the research material based on Silesian language from the Cieszyn area. The author analyses works written by Cieszyn protestant secondary grammar school students which have preserved in archives of Tschammer´s Library. The manuscripts which were studied date back to turn of the eighteenth century. The research proved that spoken language in Cieszyn differ from the common Polish language of that time in every level of language.

    The article presents the phenomenon and mechanisms of the development of bilingualism among the nineteenth-century inhabitantsThe article presents the phenomenon and mechanisms of the development of bilingualism among the nineteenth-century inhabitants of villages situated on the Bug River. The issue is principally exemplified by the novel Iwanko [Ivanko] by Leon Kunicki (1828–1873), a writer associated with southern Podlasie (the Włodawa area). Referring to different situational contexts of the characters in the novel, the author of the study has shown the mechanisms of switching linguistic codes: Polish and Ukrainian. An illustration of these complex communication processes is the Greek Catholic (Uniate) community of Horodno village. The status and prestige in a bilingual community stem from non-linguistic causes, as shown by the cited examples from the novel. The acquisition of Polish by Podlasian Ruthenians is one of the basic conditions for job promotion and, sometimes, social advancement. According to the author of the study, the novel analysed is a good philological source for investigating language contacts on the Polish-Ukrainian borderland. of villages situated on the Bug River.
