Opis:
In evolutionary computation approaches such as genetic programming (GP), preventing premature convergence to local minima is known to improve performance. As with other evolutionary computation methods, it can be difficult to construct an effective search bias in GP that avoids local minima. In particular, it is difficult to determine which features are the most suitable for the search bias, because GP solutions are expressed in terms of trees and have multiple features. A common approach intended to local minima is known as the Island Model. This model generates multiple populations to encourage a global search and enhance genetic diversity. To improve the Island Model in the framework of GP, we propose a novel technique using a migration strategy based on textit frequent trees and a local search, where the frequent trees refer to subtrees that appear multiple times among the individuals in the island. The proposed method evaluates each island by measuring its activation level in terms of the fitness value and how many types of frequent trees have been created. Several individuals are then migrated from an island with a high activation level to an island with a low activation level, and vice versa. The proposed method also combines strong partial solutions given by a local search. Using six kinds of benchmark problems widely adopted in the literature, we demonstrate that the incorporation of frequent tree information into a migration strategy and local search effectively improves performance. The proposed method is shown to significantly outperform both a typical Island Model GP and the aged layered population structure method.

Opis:
In this study we address the preliminary design for the module layout and bill conveyance routes of automatic teller machines (ATMs). We determine a two-dimensional layout for the modules as below that are approximately rectangular if the ATM is viewed from the side. ATMs require the compact placement of modules within the chassis and conveyance routes that smoothly circulate bills. However, the intersection and overlapping of routes by which the bills are conveyed in opposite directions are not allowed. Applying the bottom-left method and route-design-oriented packing method to the layout of the modules and the direction-oriented maze routing expediting branching and interflow of routes to the bill conveyance route, the application orders are optimized simultaneously using genetic algorithms (GAs). Results show that suitable designs for the ATM including the case when modules are selected as well as placed are achievable using the above simultaneous optimization. The design intention is expressible by changing the weights associated with chassis dimensions, route lengths and the number of route bends, which compose the objective function. The proposed method is useful for efficiently advancing the preliminary design of ATMs. Finally, if island models pursuing individual targets are used along with a GA, the design becomes even more efficient.

Opis:
Modelling operation of the power supply system for remote island communities is essential for its operation, as well as a survival of a modern society settled in challenging conditions. Micro-grid emerges as a proper solution for a sustainable development of a spatially constrained remote island community, while at the same time reflecting the power requirements of similar maritime subjects, such as large vessels and fleets. Here we present research results in predictive modelling the output of a small wind turbine, as a component of a remote island micro-grid. Based on a month-long experimental data and the machine learning-based predictive model development approach, three candidate models of a small wind turbine output were developed, and assessed on their performance based on an independent set of experimental data. The Random Forest Model out performed competitors (Decision Tree Model and Artificial Neural Network Model), emerging as a candidate methodology for the all-year predictive model development, as a later component of the over-all remote island micro-grid model.

Opis:
The Slit Island Method (SIM) is a technique for the estimation of the fractal dimension of an object by determining the area– perimeter relations for successive slits. The SIM could be applied for image analysis of irregular grayscale objects and their classification using the fractal dimension. It is known that this technique is not functional in some cases. It is emphasized in this paper that for specific objects a negative or an infinite fractal dimension could be obtained. The transformation of the input image data from unipolar to bipolar gives a possibility of reformulated image analysis using the Ising model context. The polynomial approximation of the obtained area-perimeter curve allows object classification. The proposed technique is applied to the images of cervical cell nuclei (Papanicolaou smears) for the preclassification of the correct and atypical cells.

Opis:
The article aims at summarising the state of the art in the efforts of researchers and innovators to find viable solutions to mitigate the urban heat island (UHI) effect. This effect is loosely connected with the greenhouse effect, however, it certainly creates a severe negative synergy together with it. As green roofs are a well-known answer how to address the UHI effect, the ways how to make their massive and global deployment convenient are discussed. Initially, the differences and similarities between urbanisation in developed and developing countries are described. Then the paper depicts solutions, especially synergic ones, for making the dissemination of green roofs viable, such as rainwater and energy harvesting or urban agriculture. Then the authors conclude that retrofitting the existing roofs is the only method for reaching the desired scale and discuss available business models necessary for introducing the prosumer approach to the retrofitting.

Opis:
There was analysed the operation of a factory power network working in island mode and cooperating with the Polish National Power System (PNPS) in selected transient states. It was assumed that two generating units: one with an asynchronous generator, and the second with a synchronous generator, were installed in the network. The behaviour of the generating units was analysed in the following transients: transition of the factory network from cooperation with the PNPS to island mode operation and shutdown of the asynchronous unit. The analysis took into account the uncertainty of the parameters of selected models of network elements. In the paper, there is described the problem of modelling the scatter of parameters of the models of electrical systems. It consists in determining the envelopes (limit bands) for a family of waveforms of the analysed signals. These envelopes were determined using multiple simulations when changing the network model parameters in an appropriate manner. There is shown the possibility of improving the angular stability of the analysed network by the use of stabilising systems with an appropriate structure and optimised parameters. It is proposed to introduce these stabilising systems to the turbine governor and the synchronous generator excitation system. Parameters of the stabilising systems were optimised by minimising the defined quality factor of electromechanical control waveforms in the selected transient state. A genetic algorithm was used to minimise this quality factor.
Przeanalizowano pracę w wybranych stanach nieustalonych zakładowej sieci elektroenergetycznej pracującej autonomicznie i we współpracy z Krajowym Systemem Elektroenergetycznym (KSE).
