W artykule przedstawiono główne rynki pozyskiwania odpadów metali elaznych i nieelaznych w Polsce.
Iron and non-iron metal wastes are considered on the international market as strategic materials because that are based on the use of the same raw material for the production of other, totally new products. This is an advantage not only from the financial but also from the ecological point of view. In this way we protect natural deposits of raw material and we contribute to the reduction of wastes which pollute all sorts of waste dumps. Hence, we aim at obtaing the most effective recovery of metal from the waste stream. Scrap market as well as market of other materials are very variable and depend on demands and supplies in given period of time. Scrap collecting system is very common and that is the reason why there are many companies and institutions which deal with scrap traffic. The article presents main markets of iron and non-iron metal acquisition in Poland.

The aim of the article is to present an unusual raw material, which is the meteorite iron and its specific status in the culture of ancient Egypt. The presentation of this extraordinary material, highlighting the features allowing to recognize it, the interpretation of the artifacts made of it (taking into account the physicochemical analyzes), and the development of the results of experimental works recreating the methods of its processing allow us to obtain the necessary information about the delineation of meteorite iron metallurgy in ancient Egypt up to the beginning of the Late Period. An important source for achieving the article’s goal are also texts. Text analysis highlights the ambiguity of the terminology used to describe meteorite iron. By reviewing the contexts of its use, they allow us to enrich knowledge about its metallurgy and help to characterize the status of this metal in the consciousness of the Egyptians.

Ferromagnetic compounds ErFe11TiHx (x = 0, 1) have been investigated by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range 20–300 K. Mössbauer spectra were analyzed in terms of a model which takes into account the local environment of Fe atoms on three crystallographic sites (8f, 8j and 8i) and an influence of the random distribution of titanium on the 8i site. The 14 sextets with different intensities have been considered. The temperature dependencies of hyperfine interaction parameters and subspectra contributions were derived from experimental spectra. The hyperfine fields and the isomer shift increasing upon hydrogenation are discussed in terms of the hydrogen-induced Wigner-Seitz unit cell expansion and the s-electrons transfer from Fe atoms to the adjacent hydrogen atoms.

Some of M type asteroids, like 016 Psyche, 022 Kalliope, 055 Pandora, 110 Lydia, 250 Bettina, 347 Pariana, 678 Fredegundis, 771 Libera, 872 Holda, are probably the source of iron meteorites. The population of these asteroids is less than 10% of all minor bodies orbiting the Sun in the asteroid belt. In the paper we analyzed the concentrations of 19 selected metals in 1730 iron meteorites according to the groups. Base on it authors found out that beside Fe and Ni the parent bodies of iron meteorites are the richest in Co, Cu, Ge, Cr, and Ga. They are also rich in As, Pt, Mo, Os, Pd, and Ir. The iron meteorites of IVB group are the richest in metals. Meteorites belonging to this group contain the highest average concentrations of Ir, Co, W, Re, Pt, Os, Pd, Rh, Ru, Mo, and Ni. Meteorites from IAB group are the richest in Ge, As, Sb and Au. The parent bodies of iron meteorites, especially from IVB and IAB groups, can be recognized as very rich polymetallic deposits. The concentrations of most of 19 analyzed metals in iron meteorites are greater than the concentrations in Earth’s crust. Only tungsten and chromium according to their strong litophile character occur in lower concentrations than in Earth’s crust. Few of the M type asteroids, those that are the source of iron meteorites, are probably the most differentiated bodies in the asteroid belt. Their chemical composition considerably differs from the composition of CI carbonaceous chondrites. Among their the most differentiated (enriched in some elements and depleted in others) and differing from CI chondrites are the parent bodies of iron meteorites belonging to IVB group. However even they are far less differentiated than Earth’s crust. This is the proof of relatively long chemical evolution of IVB group parent body comparing to parent bodies of other groups of iron meteorites and CI chondrites, but from the other hand the evolution of this body is also significantly shorter than the chemical evolution of Earth’s crust.

The current trends of production of casts are directed towards production of components disposing of higher accuracy, increased quality of surface and homogenous structure. In case of a thin-walled cast the development of speed of pressing and of pressure was observed inside the mould cavity during pressure die casting of ferrous alloys. In case of die casting of ferrous alloys the attention was paid to life service of a pressing piston and of a filling chamber. The optimal temperature of the steel casting ranges from 1600 to 1750°C and optimal mould temperature ranged from 220 to 260°C. The residues having occurred in gates reached the hardness of 38 HRC and in case of casts the value was of 45 HRC. Influence of acting of resistance pressure on the thinwalled casts only minimally. With the increasing resistance pressure the structure becomes more fine-grained and along with the increasing thickness of the wall the influence of the resistance pressure increases as well. Technology of pressure die casting of iron alloys can be compared with the pressure die casting technology of aluminium alloys. As standard, for pressure die casting the cast irons with carbon content of lower than 3% are recommended.

Improperly treated heavy metal wastewater discharged into water sources could cause a serious issue for the environment. The aim of this study was to bioaccumulate iron (Fe) using native bacteria isolated from the laboratory drainage water containing a high concentration of iron. The experiment was conducted in 250 mL conical flasks containing 150 mL Fe solution in concentrations of 25, 100, and 250 mg/L, respectively. Approximately 10% of bacteria inoculum was cultivated in each Fe concentration for 24 and 48 hours. The results showed that Pseudomonas hibiscicola was identified as an effective iron-accumulating species of bacteria. The species could remove Fe up to 82% (25 mg/L), 77.8% (100 mg/L) and 32% (250 mg/L). This promising result indicates that the native bacteria isolated from the environment pose a great potential for the remediation of wastewater containing iron.

Wider application of silicon carbide (SiC) is anticipated for increasing the durability of various structural facilities. For this study, SiC was fabricated with decreased electrical resistivity for precision electrical discharge machining. Two-step reaction sintering by infiltration of molten Fe-Si alloy was applied for SiC fabrication. The procedure included first sintering at 973 K in Ar gas atmosphere and second sintering by spontaneous infiltration of molten Fe-75%Si alloy at 1693 K in vacuum. The sintered structure porosity became very low, forming 3C-type SiC. Results confirmed that molten Fe-75%Si alloy infiltration occurred because of reaction sintering. The electrical resistivity of the sintered SiC infiltrated by molten Fe-75%Si alloy can be improved to be two orders of magnitude lower than that by molten Si, consequently maintaining the high performance of SiC.

Copper, zinc, iron and manganese contents were determined in edible parts of some fresh vegetables sold on markets in Poznań. The copper and zinc contents in vegetables obtained in the present study were compared to the ones reported from an analogous study carried out in the Department of Horticultural Plant Fertilization in Poznań fifteen years ago. Samples of vegetables were collected from six points distributed in the area of Poznań from March to July at monthly intervals. For the study, vegetables were divided into three groups according to edible parts: leaves (lettuce, cabbage, parsley, leek), roots (carrot, celeriac, parsley) and fruits (tomato, cucumber). The concentration of copper, zinc, iron and manganese was determined by the atomic flame absorption method using an AAS 3 Zeiss apparatus. The highest content of copper was found in roots of celeriac, while the smallest content was shown in cabbage leaves. The highest mean content of zinc was found in lettuce leaves and the lowest one in tomato fruit. The mean content of copper in all the vegetable species was lower in 2005 than in 1993. In 1993 more zinc was found in vegetables whose edible parts were fruits compared to the results of 2005. The vegetables whose leaves and roots are eaten were characterized by a higher zinc content in 2005. The highest content of iron was found in leaves of leek, while the lowest amounts were determined in tomato and cucumber fruits. The highest mean content of manganese was found in leaves of lettuce, while the smallest amount was in carrot roots. The iron content in the vegetables whose leaves and fruits are edible parts was lower in 2005 than in 1993, while the root vegetables were characterized by more iron in 2005. Higher content of manganese in all the vegetable species examined was found in 1993 than in 2005.

Opis:
In this study, iron selectivity behaviour of copper smelter slag (CSS) flotation tailings (38.08% Fe, 0.35% Cu, 4.48% Zn, 0.16% Co, 0.37% S) having fayalite and magnetite as major minerals was investigated with hematitization baking and base metals leaching methods using mineralogical and chemical analyses. For selectivity of iron, it was baked at temperatures of 650-690-700-710-730°C. The aim of the baking is to transform the almost all of the iron in the fayalite into the oxidized (non-soluble) form and the base metals into the sulphated (soluble) form. The temperature that had the lowest hematitization rate of iron was found to be 650°C, and the highest temperature was found to be 730°C. To examine the dissolution behaviour of baked CSS flotation tailing was leached at 50°C at a 1/10 (w/v) for 1 hour by using water. After baking at 690°C calcine and leaching residue, S values were determinated to be approximately 17% and 9%, respectively. Baking made at 700⁰C, amount of sulfate also decreased to 10% and S content was measured as 4% of its leaching residue. As a result of this study, 690⁰C/700⁰C was determined as optimum conditions of hematitization baking and base metals were extracted selectively when the iron was remained at leaching residue in Fe2O3 phase. It was determined that, hematitization is high and the sulphates of the base metals are preserved at 700⁰C temperature. The fayalite phase completely decomposed into Si-O/Fe-O/Zn-S-O/Co-S-O compounds at 700⁰C baking which was the highest iron selective and base metals dissolute temperature.

Opis:
In this paper examinations of high-temperature wetting tests of 3 systems of liquid alloy – cast iron in contact with ceramic materials: magnesia ceramics in combination with natural graphite were presented. After wettability testing, the microscopic observations of the morphology of the sample surface and the cross-section microstructure with the chemical composition in micro-areas were examined. One of the objective of this work was also to verify whether the graphite content would affect the wettability of the magnesia ceramics. The study of high-temperature wetting kinetics of the liquid alloy in contact with the ceramic material, by the "sessile drop" method with capillary purification (CP) procedure was conducted. Under the test conditions, at a temperature of 1450°C and time 15 minutes, all 3 experimental systems showed a non-wetting behaviour. The average contact angle for the system with cast iron drop on magnesia ceramics was 140°, on magnesia ceramics with 10 parts per weight of graphite was 137° and on magnesia ceramics with 30 parts per weight of graphite - 139°. Microscopic observations revealed that in the case of the sample consisting of the cast iron drop on the substrate with magnesia ceramics, the formation of fine separations was not observed, unlike the systems with the substrate with magnesia ceramics and the addition of natural graphite. Numerous, fine droplets accumulate on the graphite flakes and consist mainly of Si as well as Fe and O. On the other hand, the rough MgO grains have a gray, matt surface, without fine separations. The conducted observations indicate the mechanical nature of the bonding - liquid metal penetrates into the pores of the rough ceramics of the substrate. However, in the case of systems of cast iron drop with magnesia ceramics and addition of graphite, probably the adhesive connection and the physical attraction of elements derived from cast iron drop with the flake graphite appeared as well.

The paper presents the results of research on the content of iron in a subtotal form in the soils of metal industry areas and the content of iron in the grass growing in the test area. Research on the content of iron in soils and grasses was carried out in 2009-2010. The results indicated that the content of iron in soils taken from the premises of the metals industry plant was greater than in soils from areas not covered by direct anthropopressure. The content of iron found in soils was from 1,06% dw to 8,13% dw with the content of 0,6% dw in the control areas. The plants studied showed the presence of iron at the level of 0,027-0,104% dw with a content of 0,009% dw in the control areas. The accumulation of iron in the soils of the area under research is the result of a longterm industrial activity (which started in 1876), based on the manufacture of rolling stock and steel elements.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań zawartości żelaza w formie zbliżonej do ogólnej w glebach terenu przemysłu metalowego oraz zawartości żelaza w trawach porastających badany obszar. Badania zawartości żelaza w glebach i trawach realizowano w latach 2009-2010.

Opis:
Drops of molten cast iron were placed on moulding sand substrates. The composition of the forming gaseous atmosphere was examined. It was found that as a result of the cast iron contact with water vapour released from the sand, a significant amount of hydrogen was evolved. In all the examined moulding sands, including sands without carbon, a large amount of CO was formed. The source of carbon monoxide was carbon present in cast iron. In the case of bentonite moulding sand with sea coal and sand bonded with furan resin, in the composition of the gases, the trace amounts of hydrocarbons, i.e. benzene, toluene, styrene and naphthalene (BTX), appeared. As the formed studies indicate much higher content of BTX at lower temperature it was concluded that the hydrocarbons are unstable in contact with molten iron.
