Opis:
In the light of integrated biostratigraphic and geochemical data, a complete shallow−marine succession across the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K–Pg) boundary, with the critical boundary clay coupled with a burrowed siliceous chalk (“opoka” in Polish geological literature), possibly equivalent of the basal Danian Cerithium Limestone in Denmark, has been discovered at Lechówka near Chełm, SE Poland. An extraterrestrial signature marking the K–Pg boundary is confirmed by anomalously high amounts of iridium (up to 9.8 ppb) and other siderophile elements (especially Au and Ni), as well as by an elevated Ir/Au ratio consistent with a chondrite meteoritic composition. The major positive iridium spike surprisingly occurs in Maastrichtian marls, 10 cm below the boundary clay interval, which can be explained by diagenetic mobilisation and re−concentration of the impact−derived components. Thus, intensively infiltrating, humic acid−rich ground waters during the long−lasting Palaeogene weathering in tropical humid regimes were probably responsible not only for the large−scale decalcification of the Lechówka section, but also for both downward displaced position of the iridium enrichment, a dispersed profile of this anomaly and its significantly lessened value, but still approaching an increase by a factor of 100. This modified record of the K–Pg boundary event points to a careful reconsideration of the iridium anomaly as a trustworthy marker for studying the extinction patterns across the K–Pg boundary, as supported by the recent data from New Jersey, USA.

Opis:
The number of cancer patients in Brazil is increasing and part of the patients are submitted to brachytherapy treatment using iridium-192 wire and iodine-125 radioactive seeds. The Nuclear Energy Research Institute established a programme to produce iridium-192 wire and iodine-125 radioactive seeds. With the purpose of settling a laboratory for iridium-192 sources production, a wire activation method was developed and a hot cell for the wire manipulation, quality assurance and packaging was built. The iodine-125 seeds consist of a welded titanium capsule containing iodine-125 adsorbed onto a silver rod. Concerning the setup of the local production, the following activities were carried out: superficial treatment of the silver rod, development of a process to absorb the iodine in the silver rod, welding methodology to seal the seeds, leakage and contamination test and source activity measurement.

The most important event in the study causes of K/T extinction became Alvarez results of 1980. They were the first, by examining the position in Gubbio and Stevns Klint, suggested a link between high values of the platinum elements in the sediment and the extinction 65 million years ago. For a thorough analysis of the geochemical anomalies is necessary continuous sedimentary record on the K/T boundary. Because of the stratigraphic gap in the Central Valley of Vistula iridium content test results were inaccurate. In 2008 discovered the first complete record of iridium anomalies in eastern Poland, in Lechówka quarry.

Monoliths that are part of the automotive catalysts include noble metals: platinum, palladium and rhodium, which acts as a catalyst. During the operation of these devices platinum group elements (PGE) are released into the environment. The characteristics of individual metals belonging to the platinum group are presented in this article. These metals can be found in road sediments as well as in water or food. Platinum resources are constantly shrinking, so one of the ideas is their exploitation from the solar system. This article also presents methods of platinum recovery. The publication provides an overview of the literature on platinum-related issues.

Opis:
Organic electroluminescent panels have been widely available on the commercial market for several years, in the form of screens used in mobile phones, tablets, and TV sets. The display panels are produced in RGB technology, in which iridium(III) coordination compounds act as phosphorescent emitters of red and green light. Because of their high emission quantum efficiency and stability, the emitters containing 2-phenylpyridinato ligands and their derivatives have proved to be particularly useful. An interesting issue was the contrast between an extensive state of knowledge on the abovementioned compounds and a poor state of knowledge on analogous iridium(III) complexes equipped with benzo[h]quinolinato ligands. Application of the latter seemed interesting because of the similar size of benzo[h]quinoline and 2-phenylpyridine coordination pockets, but much more rigid structure and a greater degree of conjugation of the former, which could have a significant impact on the properties of complexes equipped with this type of ligand. Regarding to the above, this dissertation concerns the subject of the design and synthesis of new iridium(III) coordination compounds equipped with a benzo[h]quinoline motif, as well as the analysis of the structural changes impact on the photophysical, electroluminescent, thermal, electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of selected classes of compounds targeted for the application in OLED technology. Accordingly, the article presents the results of studies on two classes of heteroleptic of C,N-cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes, namely, of the salt type with the general formula [Ir(bzq)2(N^N)]+A-, stabilized by structurally different N,N-donating ligands, as well as neutral coordination compounds of the type [Ir(bzq)2(N^O)], bearing N,O-donating ß-ketoiminato ligands in the structure equipped with aryl moieties of various structure. The work included research on the determination of the correlation between the structure of ancillary ligand introduced into the coordination sphere of the metal and the above-mentioned properties. Additionally, based on the results of quantum-chemical calculations, work was undertaken to develop synthetic pathways enabling the incorporation to the C,N-cyclometalating benzo[h]quinoline ligand of substituents characterized by different stereo-electronic properties, enabling the modification of the emission parameters of the target complexes. In the next phase of research, the functionalized precursors of the bzq ligand were successfully used in the synthesis of binuclear complexes, key reagents in the preparation of corresponding mononuclear iridium coordination derivatives with electroluminescent properties.

The functionality of available official sources of sea ice data for the Northern Sea Route to date is low. In recent years a large number of new publicly available sources have appeared. Their functionality for purposes of route planning has yet to be evaluated. This study presents results of qualitative and expert analyses of various sources. It is proposed to use new indicators to enable comparison of functionality of data sources. New sources provide the technical progress that is instrumental in reducing the amount of effort and influence of the human factor in the decision-making system. The study also presents solutions to the problem of limited bandwidth available at high latitudes with Iridium satellite system. Presented solutions can be used on any vessel by any company or navigator to implement or design the decision support system related to route planning in ice in accordance with the requirements of the ISM Code and concept of e-Navigation.

Opis:
To date, the strongest arguments for ammonite survival into the Danian (earliest Paleogene) are based on material from the lower Danian Cerithium Limestone at Stevns Klint (Denmark), where ammonites occur above a clay layer with impact products at its base, the latter defining the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary. The best-preserved specimen is filled with Danian sediment rather than with Maastrichtian chalk, which would be expected had this been reworked material. Arguments for ammonite survival into the Danian have also been provided by specimens from the sporomorph and calcareous nannoplankton-dated lowermost Danian strata of Meerssen Member unit IVf-7, the Netherlands. Their good preservation indicates that they were not subject to any significant transport or redeposition. However, there are no unequivocal impact-related signatures in unit IVf-7, except for rare shocked quartz grains, recorded from burrows at its base. Sections in the Manasquan Basin, New Jersey, USA, provide equivocal data as far as the problem of ammonite survival into the Danian is concerned. At the top of the Tinton Formation there is a Pinna layer replete with fossils, inclusive of ammonites. Their exquisite preservation and occurrence in monospecific clusters rule out redeposition. The Pinna layer contains exclusively late Maastrichtian microfossils. However, a clear iridium anomaly has been noted at its base. Either the New Jersey ammonites survived the K-Pg event for a short time or the iridium is not in situ due to post-depositional repositioning by percolating water. Planned work is to focus on: 1) a detailed centimetre by centimetre sampling of some Cerithium Limestone basins in Denmark in search of additional ammonite material, 2) palaeontological and taphonomic analysis of ammonites and search for impact signatures in unit IVf-7 in the Netherlands, and 3) geochemical study of the iridium anomaly in New Jersey in order to determine whether its position in respect to the ammonite-bed is original or secondary.
