Individuals who have experienced childhood sexual abuse report numerous problems in intimate relationships, including their physical and sexual experience. Satisfying sexuality arises from intimate safety, the prerequisite for which is mutual trust, which, however, can be impaired due to betrayal in individuals who were traumatized by sexual abuse in their childhood. In a study with 168 participants, we were interested in differences in intimate safety within intimate relationships (measured by the ISQ – Intimate Safety Questionnaire subscale which refers to sexual safety). Differences were studied within two groups of couples – those who had experienced childhood sexual abuse and those who had never experienced the sexual abuse in childhood. We found that among the participating couples, in 42 (50%) couples at least one of the partners experienced at least one type of sexual abuse. One or more types of sexual abuse in childhood were experienced by 12 (14%) men and 39 (46.4%) women. We also found that in couples who had experienced sexual abuse in childhood and couples who had not, there is a difference in intimate safety in their sexual life. The couples who had not experienced sexual abuse in childhood reported statistically significantly higher sexual safety in their intimate relationships. We can conclude that childhood sexual abuse trauma is expressed in sexual intimacy with mistrust, which through the decreased feeling of safety inhibits individuals’ vulnerability and reduces the opportunity to create intimacy. The survey was limited by a biased sample.

The author of the article, inspired by Dariusz Nowacki’s review, proposes a thesis opposite to that of the famous critic, who calls Szczepan Twardoch’s and Jacek Dehnel’s diaries “a show-off of avatars.” In defence of Twardoch’s book, Wieloryby i ćmy [Whales and moths] the author decides to concentrate on its ideological and literary values. Most importantly, he strives to prove that the diaries constitute an original and innovative attempt at developing a genre of intimate diaries and have a multifaceted interpretive potential. The author of Morfina [Morphine] expresses in his diaries a desire for “directing a great life,” understood as a consistent creation of literary works as well as a life imitating literature. The analyses and commentaries included in the article focus on the oppositions and hypostases found in the text, for example, of the world and provincial, history and life, literature and nothingness, settlement and foreignness, life and death, presence and absence, life according to spirit and life according to body, responsibility and its lack.

Satisfaction in intimate relation and both gains and costs related to maintaining the relationship – comparative analysis of marital and nonmarital relations of similar durationThe aim of this study is to determine the influence of gains and costs related to maintaining the relationship on relational satisfaction in marital and nonmarital relations. 58 people engaged in heterosexual relations participated in the research: 27 persons were married and 31 persons stayed in relations but were not married. Participants were selected in such a way so that they did not differ in terms of two variables influencing relational satisfaction: the level of endorsement of stereotypical role of man in a close relationship and family values. It was also made sure that married and unmarried samples did not differ in terms of demographic variables. Participants answered questions about their experiences in a romantic relationship and completed questionnaire measuring their gains/costs related to maintaining the relationship and the level of satisfaction in relationship. The results show higher relational satisfaction in married participants. The gains related to relationship were also higher for married sample. The costs related to maintaining the relation were found similar in married and unmarried participants. Relational satisfaction depends both on gains and costs related to the relation, but the correlation is stronger in case of gains.

Heterosexual intimate relationships as a developmental task in young adulthoodHuman development in the life cycle can be described in terms of some developmental achievements. In line with this pragmatic perspective, we can refer to concept of developmental tasks proposed by Havighurst. According to his theory people progress through a series of developmental stages, which pose particular tasks and challenges. One of the main developmental tasks of young adults is to enter and maintain a heterosexual intimate relationship which is a prerequisite of marital and family life. This article focuses on heterosexual relationships as a crucial and vital developmental task in young adulthood, presents their characteristics and dynamics of development, and in line with this notion, shows them as a possible criterion of individual development. This point of view can help us in assessing the degree to which individuals fulfill developmental tasks or deviate from the ideal course of life, and then in identifying the factors associated with these deviations. Therefore we can engage in psychocorrective activities in the area of close relationships and promote a successful fulfillment of developmental tasks by young adults.

This article outlines and updates a formal, hierarchical theory of relational competence about socialization in intimate relationships, comprising: (1) three requirements: verifiability, applicability, and redundancy; (2) three meta-theoretical assumptions about the Width and Depth of relationships in Settings where relational competence is socialized; (3) three theoretical assumptions about abilities to love and to control through Presence Performance, and Production; (4) five models which include identity differentiation, styles, interactions, selfhood, and priorities; and (5) four applied models derived from meta-theoretical and theoretical assumptions: distance regulation,  pathogenic roles, intimacy, and negotiation. Empirical verification of these models has occurred through self-report paper-and-pencil instruments in the laboratory, through enrichment programs in primary prevention, targeted written practice exercises in secondary prevention, and prescribed tasks in tertiary prevention or psychotherapy.

Duration of relationship, endorsement of partners’ opinions concerning stereotypical role of woman in relationship and quality of communication as determinants of satisfaction with a relationshipThe aim of the research was to determine whether relational satisfaction is dependent on the type of relation (engagement, marriage relations of different duration: up to three years and over ten years), the quality of communication between partners, and the level of the endorsement of partners’ opinions concerning the stereotypical woman’s role in a close relationship. Two hundred sixteen engaged and married couples took part in the research. Seventy two couples were engaged, seventy two couples were married and the duration of the marriage did not exceed 3 years, and seventy two couples were married for a period longer than 10 years. Participants completed The Questionnaire of Marriage Communication (Kaźmierczak, Plopa, 2005), the level of endorsement of the partners’ opinions concerning stereotypical woman’s role in a close relationship and relational satisfaction were also measured. The results show higher relational satisfaction of participants engaged. Moreover, it was observed that the longer the relation, the lower the assessment of relational satisfaction, and the worse the quality of communication. The important factors determining relational satisfaction are both the quality of communication and the level of endorsement of partners’ opinions concerning stereotypical feminine role in a relationship. Obtained results were analysed in the light of modern theories of relations and gender roles

The article presents an excerpt from a master’s thesis entitled ‘Intimacy in the acting profession. Methods of safe working in the light of the growing use of intimacy coordination’ and is an attempt at describing and analysing the author’s experience of working with intimate content in her practice to date, using the example of working on the lead role of Rita in the short film ‘These Damn Peonies’ telling the story of a young woman searching for her orgasm. An intimacy coordinator was not hired for this project, and there were difficult situations for the author, but also for the entire production team, during the filming of the numerous intimate scenes. The author describes the individual shooting days and reflects on how specific issues of working with intimacy should be resolved based on foreign literature on the subject and on techniques learned in workshops with intimacy coordinator Vanessa Coffey, one of the founders of The Intimacy Practitioners’ Guild EU/UK.

In this study, all cases of femicide in Iceland over a thirty-year period were explored. A total of sixteen women and girls were killed during the years 1986-2015. Femicide was defined in this study as the murder of a woman by a partner, former partner, or because of passion. According to this definition, eleven femicide cases occurred during this time period. The data analyzed were court verdicts and news reports of the incidents. Qualitative methods were used for analysis. Interestingly, there was a different dynamic related to femicide cases, which included 1) sex femicide, 2) former partners and 3) current partners. Alcohol consumption and the willingness of the victim to end sex appear to be a dangerous mixture, judging from the results of the sexually-related femicide cases. Alcohol consumption was a factor in all current partner femicide cases in addition to low SES status; empathy was lacking, and patriarchal views were prominent in some of them. In former partner femicide cases, jealousy and possessiveness were major themes, but not alcohol consumption. It is important to study such dynamics and contextual factors in greater detail in larger studies.

The paper describes the crucial significance of Witold Gombrowicz’s Diary in history of the intimate diary genre. The Diary violates the fundamental elements of the genre, introduces literary fiction, and forms complex identity of the speaking subject, which may be called the post-traditional identity. Therefore, the Gombrowicz’s work breaks the autobiographical pact, identified by Philippe Lejeune – author of classical works on autobiographical writing, as an essence of the genre.

The paper presents cases, found in Polish academic life, of exceptional and moving violations of moral standards bound with the ideal of a scholar. These cases were made public by actors themselves (Wincenty Lutoslawski, Eugeniusz Romer), uncompromising historians (Henryk Barycz, Stanislaw Pigon) or widely known decision-makers (Rev. Bronislaw Zongollowicz). They argued that the ethics of scholars has not only normative character, but also a descriptive one, in many cases different that normative decisions. So conceived normative ethics should encompass the intimate life, particularly if it were made public due to a scandal. Such a scandal should call not condemnation, but intellectual reflection.

Sex education and conversations about intimate relationships are generally regarded to be important and can contribute to young women’s positive or negative reproductive health development and general well-being. The findings contained in this article suggest that in a resource poor South African township, mothers and their daughters struggle to initiate and conduct meaningful discussions about sex. These discussions are often framed in terms of possible negative consequences of intimate relationships, such as unplanned pregnancy, dropping out of school, or possible Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. However, these discussions are clearly not altogether effective as several young research participants had an unplanned baby. Emotional aspects that are normally associated with intimate relationships are missing from the mother-daughter conversations.

Przemoc małżeńska jest trudnym doświadczeniem, na zawsze albo na bardzo długo burzącym spokój życia rodzinnego, odbierającym pokrzywdzonym poczucie bezpieczeństwa – jedną z najważniejszych potrzeb człowieka. Wobec tego problemu nie można pozostać obojętnym. W związku z tym system prawny państwa zapewnia określone mechanizmy, mające chronić osoby doznające przemocy. Czy są to narzędzia skuteczne? Przedkładany artykuł omawia to zagadnienie, udzielając odpowiedzi na tak postawione pytanie, w oparciu o wyniki badań zrealizowanych w ramach międzynarodowego projektu SNaP „Special Needs and Protection Orders” z programu Daphne III. Badania o charakterze jakościowym (wielokrotne studium przypadku) przeprowadzono wśród praktyków, na co dzień zawodowo zajmujących się przemocą w rodzinie, uzupełnione zostały o wyniki analizy akt z Sądu Rejonowego w Białymstoku. W zależności od reprezentowanego obszaru pomocy, wybrane sposoby ochrony kobiet doświadczających przemocy małżeńskiej oceniane są przez praktyków inaczej, bardziej lub mnie pozytywnie. Polaryzacja opinii jest rzeczą naturalną. Nie ulega jednak wątpliwości, iż skuteczność zapewniania bezpieczeństwa osobom pokrzywdzonym w wyniku agresywnych zachowań domowników jest coraz większa, a o wciąż istniejących niedomaganiach systemu trzeba mówić, by zostały one w przyszłości udoskonalone.
Intimate partner violence is a difficult experience for ever, or at least for a very long time, disturbing family life, robbing the victim of a sense of safety, which is one of the most important human needs. This problem cannot be ignored. Therefore, the legal system provides certain mechanisms designed to protect victims of violence. Are these measures effective? The article discusses this problem, providing answers to this question, based on the results of research conducted as part of the international project SNaP „Special Needs and Protection Orders”, which is part of the Daphne III programme. Qualitative research (multiple casestudies) were conducted among practitioners, whose work is concerned with domestic violence were supplemented with an analysis of case files from the District Court in Białystok. Practitioners evaluate selected measures of protecting female victims of intimate partner violence more or less positively, depending on the represented area of support. Polarisation of opinion is natural. However, there is no doubt that the effectiveness of protecting victims of aggression in the household increases, but the still existing problems of the system have to be addressed so that they can be improved in the future.

This paper predicts qualitatively and quantitatively the near infrared activity of individual minerals in simple and complex mineral associations using mixtures of common alteration minerals found in a copper ore. It was found that spectra dominance in most cases is dependent on any or combination of mineral composition, relative proportion or concentration and/or mineral accessibility or sensitivity to near infrared radiation. The analysis of results also indicated that, in most cases, only freely occurring waste, such as clays (kaolinite and/or muscovite) and calcite, can be targeted for discrimination. In this paper, a strategy for the application of near infrared for preconcentration of copper bearing minerals like chrysocolla and malachite from coarse ore particles was proposed. Other applications also considered in this paper include preconcentration of hematite from associated clays and carbonate waste, and the determination of moisture content in kaolinitic clays.
